What is “local cover” and when is it “international”?
 BONITAS Medical Scheme
o Local Emergency Medical Services – South Africa, Swaziland, and Lesotho,
Namibia (if resident in Namibia) only
 International – Cover for when you are travelling anywhere else.
How do I access the Travel Extension?
 Call the Netcare 911 International Assistance call center on +2711 254 1387 or
 e-mail [email protected]
 Netcare 911 assistance agents will send you a declaration form which needs to be
completed per member traveling, and returned to Netcare 911.
What is the cover on the Travel Extension?
 R5 000 000 for emergency medical expenses and medically approved repatriation
 This policy does not cover curtailment, lost baggage etc.
Do all BONITAS members have access to the travel extension?
 No – only BonComprehensive, Standard and BonSave members
 Claims will only be considered if one is a valid member of BonComprehensive,
Standard and BonSave at the time of the incident and claim.
Is there an age limit?
 Yes – under the normal policy the age limit is 70 years
 A Senior’s policy is issued if you are over 70 years, up to the age of 80 yrs.
 The Seniors policy covers for medical emergencies but not pre-existing conditions
Is there cover for chronic conditions?
 Yes, through TIC – If hospitalised for 48 hours or more,
 Age limit is 70 years for pre-existing or chronic conditions
 Cover is up to a limit of R100 000.
Can I claim if I have not declared travel?
 NO – as this is a separate short term travel product it must be issued before your
departure from South Africa.
What if I stay longer than the original dates?
 Regardless of the travel dates declared, and which appear on the policy – you are
covered for 90 days from date of departure
 You do not have to request a new policy if you stay longer than the dates declared.

What if I am travelling for longer than 90 days?
 The TIC policy and BONITAS cover will be in place for the first 90 days.
 Before you leave South Africa it is advisable to purchase additional cover for the
balance of your stay.
 Contact TIC(011 780 3300) or another travel insurance company for a quote.
What if I am travelling with the intention of working for 6mths/1 year etc?
 The TIC policy will only cover you during leisure hours, and will not cover in the
event of an injury while working.
 The cover will only be for trips of 90 days.
 It is strongly advised that you purchase appropriate cover – Contact TIC or another
travel insurance company for a quote.
What is meant by excess of R1000?
 If you see a doctor, or incur any medical expenses and are not hospitalised for at
least 24 hours or more, then you are responsible to pay the first R1000 (or equivalent
in local currency).
Will I be covered if I am pregnant?
 Yes for all medical emergencies not related to your pregnancy.
 Yes for a medical emergency related to your pregnancy before the 26th week of
gestation.
 No for any medical treatment related to your pregnancy after the 26th week of
gestation.
 No normal check ups, or delivery costs will be covered by TIC.
 You are advised to consult your doctor before travelling.
 There is no cover for any child born whilst on a journey
What if I am playing professional sports?
 There is no cover through the travel policy,
 You can apply for a ‘Sporting Extension’ directly with TIC (011 780 3300) This means
that Sports related injuries can be covered at an Additional Premium and subject to
the terms and conditions of the policy wording
Am I covered when diving or snorkelling?
 Yes for snorkelling.
 Yes for Diving if you have an “Open Water Diving Certificate” or if diving under the
supervision of a qualified diving instructor
 No for diving if you are going deeper than 18m, or are diving professionally. Then
one should consider taking out Divers Alert Network cover. (011 254 1991)
Am I covered if I am going snow skiing?
 Yes - Snow skiing is covered if on a recognised tourist type slope
 No if you are going cross country skiing, competitive or professional skiing, eg down
hill racing will not be covered. You can apply for a ‘Sporting Extension’ to cover this.

What is considered a hazardous sport?
Hazardous sports are any sports where you can reasonably expect an injury to occur,
including but not limited to:
 Polo, Polo Crosse, Show Jumping, Gymkhana, Horse racing
 Motor sport and motor bike racing
 Contact sports e.g. Karate, Judo, boxing, wrestling
 Any climbing involving equipment – ie ropes, harnesses, pitons
 Hang Gliding, paragliding
You are advised to contact TIC or another Travel Insurance to establish if they will cover the
specific sport/activity you are planning to engage in. You will need to pay the policy premium
on the extension. If there is no cover on the sporting extension you may need to consider
taking out extreme risk/personal accident cover. See below
Will I be covered if I am the pilot or crew of an aircraft?
 Only during leisure hours.
 You may need to consider taking out extreme risk/Personal Accident Cover.
Who provides Extreme risk/Personal Accident cover?
Praesidio are Short-term underwriters on behalf of various syndicates at Lloyd's and specialise
in Personal Accident cover including pilots and crew.
They are not able to provide Medical / Evac cover on a stand alone basis. This benefit has to
be supported by the Accidental Death and Permanent Disability policy.
The policy is usually taken on an annual basis, and they do not accept monthly premiums.

She would need the following information in order to provide cover for pilots and/or crew
members:
* Name and date of birth
* Address in South Africa
* Annual earnings
* Flying experience
* Destinations
* Flight patterns (how often they fly)
* Aircraft details
* 3 year accident record
* Benefits required
When Bronwen has the necessary info, she will provide a quote to you.
You will have to pay the premium - this is not be covered by BONITAS or TIC.
Will I be covered when riding a motorbike/scooter whilst traveling?
 Yes – as driver - if you have a current legal driver’s license and the motorbike has a
capacity of 200cc or less

 Yes – as passenger – if the driver has a current legal driver’s license and the
motorbike has a capacity of 200cc or less
Will I be covered for Dentistry?
 Yes – for emergency treatment to sound natural teeth for pain relief or to restore
function.
 Limited to R1500
 Cover for more than R1500 will be only if the treatment is required as a result of
bodily injury.
Are there any other general exclusions?
 Yes – there is no cover for the following:
o Any psychiatric condition
o Any treatment related to HIV or AIDS
o Prosthetic devices, contraceptive devices, medical appliances, artificial aids
o Spectacles
o Physiotherapy exceeding R1000 unless you are hospitalised
o If you are traveling with the intent of emigrating
o If you are traveling with the intent of obtaining medical treatment whilst
overseas
o Exposure to war and other acts of riot

How do I submit my claim?
 If you have incurred expenses while overseas, you need to submit a detailed invoice
with a medical report to TIC accompanied by a claim form. This can be obtained by
calling Netcare 911 IA or from the TIC website (www.tic.co.za)
 Please note that if you have not notified Netcare 911 IA of your emergency, the TIC
claim will be limited to ZAR 10 000
