round 12 - Southern Football League
ROUND 12 JULY 4, 2015 www.sfnl.com.au | www.sfnllive.com.au WHAT’S HAPPENING AT SFNL HQ? DAVID CANNIZZO, SFNL CEO @SFLCEO Planning for next year...NOW! Board / Committee succession planning is something that should be on all club meeting agendas here on, if it is not already. Will Hunter has been appointed part-time Media Officer. The purpose of this is for clubs to have an understanding of who will be continuing with their committee position in 2016 and if they are not, then who will? The Executive positions at clubs are really what I am referring to here, being President, Vice-President, Secretary and Treasurer. If you currently hold one of these positions and do not intend to continue next year, then the time is now to search for your successor, the person that will take the position on. Finding successors most likely won’t be a simple task, but by starting now it will provide 4-6 months to locate the appropriate person. Next committee meeting add – Succession Planning. SFNL welcome new team members I am pleased to advise that the positions of Administration & Events Officer and Media Officer have now been filled. Will is currently a boundary rider for the SFNL Match of the Day broadcast as well as being a media (print and web) journalist for the SFNL over the last three years. The SFNL are very excited to welcome these two new members to the administration team. Bye Round This weekend there is a bye across Division 1, 2, Under 19s, Thirds – Blue and Netball. This was scheduled so that the Home & Away rounds for these competitions finish a week later than Division 3 and Thirds-Red therefore allowing all competition Grand Finals to be on separate days. Having said that, there are a couple of exceptions to the above where some matches will be played this weekend instead of the following. Division 1: Chelsea Heights v Cheltenham Thirds – Blue: Chelsea Heights v Cheltenham Matthew Grimwood has been appointed full-time Administration & Events Officer. Under 19s: Hallam v Carrum-Patterson Lakes (as a quadruple header with the Thirds and Division 3 Senior and Reserve matches) Matthew completed a yearlong internship with the SFNL last year and worked as the General Manager – Operations main deputy. Best of luck to all for this weekend and we hope to see some bigger crowds with less SFNL matches to choose from. Razor won plenty of the footy off half back, taking several strong intercept marks and he hardly missing a target all day by hand or by foot. But Ray became the hero for the Clays when, despite suffering from cramp and exhaustion, he sent a booming drop punt straight through the big sticks from 45m out in the final seconds to give the Clays an epic 1-point victory. Mentiplay WWW.SFNL.COM.AU | 5 SOUTHERN FOOTBALL NETBALL LEAGUE DIVISION 1: FRONT & CENTRE / WILL HUNTER Clayton and St Pauls fought out an absolute classic at Meade Reserve, with the home side prevailing by the barest of margins in dramatic circumstances. The Clays were the better of the two sides early, and using the breeze in the opening stanza they had opened up a fivegoal buffer by quarter time. With Liam Wilson dominant through the middle the Dogs fought back to pinch the lead late in the final term, and when Travis Ridgeway booted his third major (a goal of the year contender) at the 23-minute mark of the last quarter they led by 11 points and look home. An instant reply saw the lead cut back to five before Andy Ray capped a BOG performance by nailing the match-winning goal from a long-range set shot with the last kick of the day. Opposing ruckmen Jesse Henderson (Clayton) and Ryan Kitchin (St Pauls) battled hard against one another for most of the day and featured among their respective sides’ best. Dingley continued its scintillating form with a dominant display over St Kilda City at Peanut Farm. The final margin stood at 39 points, but should have been much greater given the Dingoes squandered chances in front of goal and took their foot off the gas in the final term, allowing the Saints to kick six of the last eight goals. Dan Farmer booted five goals for the winners and Stu Cleeve was well on top in the ruck, while veteran big man Steve Arvanitis was named in City’s best for the second consecutive week. East Brighton returned to the winners’ circle with a comprehensive 73-point drubbing over Bentleigh at Hurlingham Park. The Demons took the fight right up their more fancied opponents in the first half and with stalwart Scott Lawry leading the charge they got within two goals at the long break. But it was one-way traffic from then on; the home side was simply unstoppable as they piled on 10 goals to one in the second half. Vampires skipper Ben Douthie played close to his best game of the year and racked up big numbers through the guts while teammate Phil Smith had a day out up forward with eight majors. 6 | SFNL RECORD 2015 @Will_Hunter89 2015 DIVISION 1 SENIORS FIXTURE Over at Ben Kavanagh Reserve, a red-hot Mordialloc outfit thrashed Cheltenham by 62 points. The Bloods raced out the blocks with a five-goal opening term, and with David Marguglio and Carey Neville on top in the midfield they never allowed the Rosellas back into the contest. Cheltenham fought hard to work back into the contest in the third term, but Mordic simply had all the answers. Although the loss is a body blow to Chelt’s finals aspirations, the stellar debut of Bane Suboticki was perhaps their biggest positive. ROUND 1 11-Apr ROUND 7 23-May St Kilda City 13.6.84 def by Cheltenham 14.12.96 Mordialloc 15.6-96 def Clayton 7.9-51 St Kilda City 10.5-65 def East Brighton 9.14-68 Cheltenham 12.4-76 def East Malvern 11.9-75 Dingley 21.8-134 def St Pauls 8.2-50 Chelsea Heights 9.8-62 def byBentleigh 9.12-66 The final game was an all too familiar scenario for the Heighters as they were yet again handed a heavy defeat. East Malvern were ruthless in front of their home crowd and had the game wrapped up early with a 62-point quarter time lead. The Panthers had winners on every line, but the polish of Isaac McCrimmon and 11 goals between Matt Ryan and Michael Cooke were the highlights. The Heighters were well served by the usual suspects in Jordy Peryman and Lachie Dobson. Chelsea Heights 4.5.29 def by East Malvern 18.17.125 With just one standalone match features this weekend as part of a split Round 12 in Division One, with the remaining eight sides looking forward to a well-earned week off. Chelsea Heights V Cheltenham (Beazley Reserve) Boy, given where the Heighters and the Rosellas are at right now, last year’s epic elimination final seems like a lifetime ago. Saturday is a massive occasion for Chelsea Heights, as they hold their Past Players day in the afternoon and celebrate the 20-year reunion of their first SFNL senior premiership in the evening, so they will no doubt be keen to put in a big one. They have had nothing to cheer so far this year, sitting winless on the bottom of the ladder and have little left to play for as relegation draws closer every week. Cheltenham, however, has a lot riding on this game. Currently seventh, they are two wins and percentage out of the five so they need a massive win here to keep themselves in finals contention. This is a game the Rosellas simply cannot afford to lose so I expect them to spoil the Heighters’ party. WWW.SFNL.COM.AU | 11 SOUTHERN FOOTBALL NETBALL LEAGUE DIVISION 1: CLUB NOTES EAST BRIGHTON Under 19’s It is a credit to the Demons that their youth program has been as strong as it has been over the past few years. In 2014 the Paul Dimmatina led Colts did not lose a game and won the all too rare Premiers and Champions tag which is a feat few groups savour. In 2015 they look for Back to Back honours and if last week’s performance was anything to go by are a real chance to deliver. The Vampires have struggled for consistency in personnel throughout the year, rarely fielding a team one week that resembled anything of the previous week. As a result there is a definite lack of predictability amongst the players. Combined with a reluctance to train has resulted with the Club making a giant leap forward on one hand in fielding a team but perhaps swimming against the tide for most of the season. The major aspect has been continuing to cough the ball up to the opposition too easily having worked mightily hard to win possession. It’s something that can be improved fairly easily but until training numbers improve the great efforts of a few will continue to go unrewarded. It’s up to you boys. Reserves It was not a game that inspired an enthusiastic build up given the form of the opposition and the home team but credit to Jason Louey and a couple of Under 19’s saw the Reserves again cobble together enough players to field what was a pretty competitive outfit even though the scores didn’t reflect the true nature of the contest. Recent performances have seen this team provide a glimmer of hope for the remainder of the season and the ability to have a real crack regardless of the negatives. Assuming that players are prepared to offer the same, success ST KILDA CITY Big day at the Peanut Farm yesterday with 5 netball and 4 football matches. The U19’s had a good win against the finals contenders setting them up for a top 2 finish, 3rds had a narrow loss and the seniors and reserves were beaten convincingly, although the seniors had a strong last quarter. On the netball side we scored 1 win 12 | SFNL RECORD 2015 will inevitably come. The club can only ask that players representing it offer their best and that really shouldn’t be questioned when analysing the past month. Sure, the results have been predictable but the team has never waved the white flag and, in reality, that is all anyone can ask. This week against St. Pauls offers an opportunity and an upset maybe in the offering. Seniors Highlights included the Senior return of the mercurial Dan Reid and the continued great work from the youngster and Under 19 Isaac Williams. The son of VFL/AFL Champion Choco Williams, Isaac has a fruitful future in front of him showing poise belying his tender years. Bentleigh gave the Seniors a real fright last time around and have been competitive in almost all games this season. They were to be no pushover. An even first half was no real surprise. Turnovers were costly for the Vampires but after half time the team clicked into gear and started to show the attributes expected. A fairly impressive display ensued as East Brighton flexed its muscles to which the young Bentleigh team had few answers. Good teams rise to the occasion and East Brighton certainly showed that when it is prepared to do the team orientated things they are more than a handful. Rated a 75% performance there is still a measure to go and a 4 quarter effort has proved elusive thus far. 7 games left and the business end is fast approaching starting with an always expected tough tussle at McKinnon Road against a desperate St. Pauls Doggies. History tells us these games are always a torrid affair between 2 proud clubs and it will take a concerted effort to prevail after the Doggies fell from the 5 in controversial circumstances last week. ST PAULS Seniors It was an important game for the seniors to consolidate their position in top 5. Clayton jumped out of the blocks with a 5 goal to 2 in the first quarter. At the long break Clayton took in a 3 goal lead. 2nd half saw a great contest with both teams sharing the lead. Last quarter was close and with only a couple of minutes left the Doggies were up by 11 points. Clayton gained a break from the centre and goaled. With less than a minute left the umpire paid a 50 metre penalty to Clayton who scored another goal to lead by a point as the siren sounded for a Doggies loss. Liam Wilson again best and Travis Ridgway kicking 3. Reserves The team had shown a lot of improvement in the last weeks and were confident going into the game. We also had Tim Tyler and Jaz Kay returning. First half was a tight contest with both sides having a red hot go. Doggies trailed by 3 points at the break. 2nd half saw Clayton CLAYTON Clayton’s Ones and Twos took the points from St Pauls in Round 11, while the Thirds won by forfeit when Chelsea Heights pulled out of their game. Lunico Hotel Senior Report. Clays supporters witnessed a ‘win for the ages’ with our stirring one-point victory in the Ones. Clayton led for much of the day until St.Pauls turned on a five-goal last quarter to steal the lead late in the game. With just two minutes left on the clock Clayton was 11 points down and looked toasted – but some aerial gymnastics from the coach got one goal back, then with the siren looming Andy Ray had a set shot from 45 metres. It sailed through post-height just before the siren sounded to give the Clays an unlikely and euphoric win. Those who were present will talk about this one for many years to come. ‘Razor’ was the ‘last-kick’ hero, but the win was built on Jesse Henderson’s ruck dominance, solid defense again led by ‘Jaydo’ Gilmour and Daniel Kirby. Hard midfield running from Gabby Irons and ‘Cooka’ Wilson produced five goals between them and they had a hand in several others. Stewie Scanlon come out hard and applying plenty of pressure. Our boys lost concentration and only managed 3 goals more for the half, while Clayton scored 10 and ran out winners by 8 goals. Tim Tyler and Jaz Kay were among the best, while James Bragagnolo kicked 2. U19’s vs Oakleigh Districts On a chilly but calm winters morning we ventured out to Oakleigh Districts. It was 6th vs. 7th so each side was desperate for a win to keep in touch with 5th and finals spot. Kicking against a slight breeze in the first we missed a couple of early opportunities, the intencity and pressure was evident from both sides. Oakleigh Districts responded well but by the end of the first they held a small 3 point lead. The message was simple, don’t over use and be direct when going forward. With Kyle in the ruck again getting first use to Victor we appeared to be getting on top with a couple of early goals. However we started to lose focus and not be accountable allowing the Oakleigh Districts defenders was our best up forward with 4. Back in the five boys and on the march! State Gas Appliances Reserves Report. The Twos got off to a rusty start, but built slowly to hold a four-goal lead at the last change. Again our boys finished full of running, and our five-goal last quarter resulted in a solid 8-goal win. Jack Crameri was productive up forward with 3 goals. Our best were Nick Parisi, Johnny Davis and Garry Brown. Gerard Imbriano showed plenty of aggression in the packs, Ryan Ladson was creative in the midfield and Steve Martin got plenty of the footy. Our Twos are now well-embedded in the five and look set to consolidate a finals berth in the coming weeks. Social. Thanks to all who joined in our Crazy Games and Trivia after the St Pauls game - a great night with lots of laughs, buoyed by our classic one-point win. The live music afternoon at the Club the following day with cover band “Spin” was also well-supported. Coming events include: Tonight Saturday 11 July after our East Malvern game, come back to Meade and mids to run the ball forward and allow their forwards plenty of opportunites. At half time Oakleigh had extended their lead to 5 points. With our season on the line we had to be more accountable and composed going in the premiership quarter. With just two on the bench and one already hurt we were dealt a blow 5 min into the quarter with Ryan Kreymborg taken to hospital with a bad back injury. To the boys credit they didn’t panic allowing just 2 goals but getting 2 themselves. Eight points down going into the last. We got a couple early with Victor, Fred and Nick Supple getting on top across the middle. Oakleigh got one back to hit the lead again. Our back six with Ben Lindsay and Tim Walsh providing run out of the backline was providing our forwards with plenty of opportunities. Our forward pressure was rewarded with 2 goals giving us a 10 point lead with approx 1 min to go. Oakleigh Districts didn’t let up scoring one to give the coaches a few nervous seconds until the siren sounded for a 4 point win. Best - Great team effort however special mention to Victor with 6 goals Oval for the Mr Clayton Cocktail Night from 7.30 pm. $50 includes slushy cocktails, finger food, beer, wine and soft drinks. WWW.SFNL.COM.AU | 13 SOUTHERN FOOTBALL NETBALL LEAGUE DIVISION 1: CLUB NOTES EAST MALVERN This week we were at home vs Chelsea Heights. Both teams had comprehensive wins, so well done to our boys. Seniors This Saturday we took on bottom of the ladder Chelsea Heights, this was a great opportunity for our boys to regain some much needed confidence in themselves and our game style. Our opening quarter was outstanding with unselfish, fast ball movement. It was clear from early on in the game that the players were committed to sticking with the game plan and 12 goals in the first was just reward. Big T. Rex’s tap work was exceptional and it was clear to see why he’s rated so highly. Cooky was terrific, Bubba got on the end of a few and the midfield (Isaac, Fitzy, Jess and Jamesy) all played major roles in the win. The back half were once again almost faultless, their spread and hard running was awesome. The boys worked really hard until the end and really put Chelsea away, which MORDIALLOC Mordialloc took to the field of battle for the week before the bye on the back of five wins the previous weekend. Could we back up with another five? Umm… no, but three wasn’t a bad effort all told… At the Dingley courts our netball firsts faced a Chelsea Heights side short of competition points but full of enthusiasm. Such games can be tricky, but the girls handled this one with much aplomb and no little confidence, coming away with a convincing 45 to 25 victory. This all but assures us of a finals berth, putting us four wins clear of Bentleigh in fifth. The seconds had a rather more difficult time of it though, playing a committed Heatherton side intent on taking down a big scalp, and finishing on the wrong end of a 37 to 27 scoreline. This leaves us behind Dingley in third by the merest of percentages, so every goal counts from here on. We do, however, play Dingley for second spot at 7pm on Thursday July 9 – those that can please 14 | SFNL RECORD 2015 was pleasing as we’ve had trouble finishing off sides in the past. All in all we saw fantastic effort by both teams this week, and coming into our last break of the year I think we’ve put ourselves in a great mindset to attack the remaining 7 games of the season. Reserves Back at home against Chelsea Heights, the Reserves looked to make it 3 in a row going into the second break of the year. In what turned out to be a great overall team effort, our unselfishness and willingness to work hard for one another by either running in packs, clearing space or doing the one percenters really showed with a very pleasing end result. 9 individual goal kickers highlighted by Tractor and Roughy with 6 each was a real positive, whilst our players in the backline all provided plenty of two way running to create and also stop their opponents opportunities throughout the day. get down and support! The firsts take on Heatherton in the Saturday mid-day time slot. The football thirds continued their recent impressive roll, controlling their game against Cheltenham from start to finish. Big Rob Bibby put on a master class in the ruck, Darren Barlow kicked a lazy seven, coach Kent contributed with four and around the ground everyone won their position to contribute to a comprehensive victory, to the tune of 67 points. We thank those who have come down to play for the red & white, and are very encouraged by their progress. The seconds, however, will want to forget this one in a big hurry. We were second to the ball all day against a committed Cheltenham side that seemed to want the win more than we did. One goal to three-quarter time was not what the doctor ordered. Five goals to one in the last term showed what we can do, but it was too little too late. The two Evans boys and Nick Hoban were standouts- Our midfield group, whilst not always mentioned in the best players, are providing a very consistent effort each week and were once again dominant. With 7 weeks left we must take the positives away from this win and look to keep working harder as there are big games ahead as we look to solidify a spot in the top 5. Social Calendar East Malvern Football Club Major Draw 5 July 2015 With the chance to win $2000 you have to get your ticket to the Reverse Draw! Tickets are $50 and are available from [email protected] $50 dollars entry includes spit roast lunch, wine, beer and cider. If you have any questions or to RSVP please email [email protected] we need a big performance next time round to prove it was just an off day. The ones never looked in danger after kicking the first five goals of the match. From that point onwards the boys never let their opponents back into the game in a clinical display with every player doing their bit. Dave Marguglio controlled play across half back, Luke Barnhoorn was at his creative best, and Matt Ravenall and the two Jimmies converted all that came their way up forward in one of the best wins of the season to date. The bye will help some players to get over a few bumps and bruises before taking on the ladder-leading Dingley on their return. All three football sides are playing there, and they always have a big local following, so it would be nice to see plenty of red and white to drive our boys on. The Beena played their home ground advantage perfectly in an impressive first half display that saw them kick 10 goals to eight to take a 12 point half time lead. The game turned defensive in the second half as Keysborough struggled to penetrate Murrumbeena’s backline effectively. The result was a tight eight point victory to Murrumbeena, its’ seventh of the season. Dean Spanos and Anthony Ekberg-Weiss combined for six goals. A six-goal final quarter has propelled Caulfield to victory against Doveton Eagles and back into the top five. The teams were even for the majority of the tough contest but the Bears were able to wrest the momentum away from Doveton to pile on six goals to one behind in the last quarter to post the 10-goal victory. The young brigade of Bears prowling the field displayed some significant improvement as full forward Adam Connell continued his resurgence with four goals. Oakleigh Districts have surged back to the top of the ladder after a 98-point thumping of Springvale Districts. Springvale held a slight one-point lead at the first break before Oakleigh clicked into gear in the second quarter, kicking eight goals to nothing to take a 51-point lead into half time. @JBarbin10 Oakleigh kicked another 10 goals in the second half as its midfield went on a field day in the clearances. David Velardo was the main benefactor as he was back to his best with eight goals. Skye produced a stunningly powerful display of offensive power on Saturday in its 77-point win against Heatherton at Ross Street Reserve. A good second quarter by the Tonners left them only 14 points behind at the main break and they were in with a sniff. But an eight-goal third quarter followed by a six-goal final quarter put the nail in the coffin as the Bombers rallied to record their eighth win of the season and remain in the top three. Aaron Harper was the best for Skye with four goals. Hampton is in mini crisis mode after suffering a heavy 50-point defeat at the hands of Highett on Saturday. Missing key forward Joel Hanlon, the Hammers were competitive in the first half and only trailed the Dogs by seven points at the main break. But Highett proved simply too good in the second half as it spread the scoring load around, kicking nine goals to two as it comfortably recorded the big win. Six players kicked multiple goals for Highett while Jess Elms was named best on ground. All Division Two clubs have a bye so no matches are scheduled this weekend. Our chance to show Our appreciation for their fantastic support. Go Oaks. HIGHETT The most successful day this season, our netball teams were undefeated, the Unders topped up with a few Under 17s competed very well. Reserves and seniors were both winners, showing their capabilities. EXCELLENT, GO DOGGIES.. MURRUMBEENA On The Field The ladder leader, Keysborough, came to the Beena Arena on 27th June. The Beena boys were coming off a good win and fancied themselves against the Burras. The reserves were missing many players and a number of replacements had not trained or played together. The result of this scratch side showed on the scoreboard. The Beena boys tried hard and never gave in, but were comprehensively beaten by a bigger and stronger Keysborough side. Some of our better players were Harry Fleming, Glenn Fowles and Tom Thornton. The Senior’s game was a very different affair. Right from the start the Beena boys were at the ball and determined to take it up to Keysborough. The Burras were bigger and stronger but Murrumbeena wanted this game and believed it could win. We went into the first change in front and remained there all day. It was a hard tussle and the Beena boys were faster and more determined. They out manoeuvred and out ran their opponents. At three quarter time the game was there to be won and Keysborough was kicking with the wind in the last quarter. But the young Beena players now believe in themselves and were not going to let this one slip. This was our most significant win in the season so far. It was an all-out team effort, with everyone contributing. Three of the best in this Beena side were Alex Moloney, Anthony Egberg-Weiss and James Shirley. Well done Beena, Netball What a game! Playing against the top side, with the coach having to don the uniform to make up numbers, the Murrumbeena girls battled against St Kilda City, remaining in striking distance for the first half. After losing 2 players (one being the coach) to twisted ankles, the 5 Beena girls remaining on court fought on, amazingly still making the St Kilda City girls work hard for their win. Final score 52:28. Inspirational according to St Kilda City who were full of praise for our efforts after the game. (The coach’s career revival has been shelved for good. She is going back to the sidelines where she belongs! ) Sponsors: The ‘Beena is indebted to the following 2015 loyal sponsors: Thomson Real Estate, Sheen Panels, Oakleigh Lions, Chadstone Toyota, Attwood Newsagency, Brew Café, Bowen Automotive, NAB, Bakers Delight Carnegie, the Rosstown Hotel, Morgans Finance Advisors Brighton, Bendigo Bank and all our player sponsors. WWW.SFNL.COM.AU | 23 SOUTHERN FOOTBALL NETBALL LEAGUE 24 | SFNL RECORD 2015 WWW.SFNL.COM.AU | 25 SOUTHERN FOOTBALL NETBALL LEAGUE SFNL MEDIA DESK GETTING TO KNOW THE HALL OF FAME INDUCTEES / WILL HUNTER Bill Ostle - Federal Football League “Tough love” and “hard but fair” seem to be part of the mantra of oldschool coaches. Bill Ostle was certainly of that mould and was loved and respected and by all of the players he coached throughout his highly decorated career in the Federal Football League. He began his coaching career with Cheltenham in 1956 and helped the Rosellas claim the reserves grade premiership in 1958. He then moved across to East Malvern the following year where he won another four senior premierships in seven years. He also took charge of the FFL’s interleague team in 1970 and 1971. But while his impressive coaching record speaks for itself, what is less obvious was his ability to motivate, inspire and connect with his players. This was what made him the coaching great he was and is a massive part of the legacy he left behind. Bruce Hill - Southern Football Netball League You would be hard pressed to find a man who has contributed more to local football than Bruce Hill. For nearly 50 years, Hill has experienced the highs and lows as a player, administrator and volunteer and has given invaluable service to two SESFL/SFNL clubs. In the process, he has amassed a list of honours, awards and achievements the length of Flemington straight. His playing career alone is extraordinary, having featured in over 750 senior matches across various competitions in a career that continued until his mid 60s. One of Ostle’s former charges at East Malvern was John Collins, the former President of the Beaumaris Football Club. Ostle’s daughter, Judy, who had sons playing at the Sharks at the time, remembered mentioning to Collins that her dad had played and coached at East Malvern. Collins then asked Judy what her dad’s name was. “(When I told him) his comment was (that) he was the toughest coach (he had) ever played under,” Judy recalled. “He was 17 at the time and they were at training and exhausted and dad said: “right, boys, five more laps of the oval!” They were cursing him but as (dad) was doing the laps also (they) couldn’t back out. Con Gorozidis Southern Football Netball League After making a name for himself during his fleeting career in the VFL, Con Gorozidis became one of the biggest names in local footy in the 1990s. His childhood mate and former teammate at St Kilda and Sandringham, John Bennett, then convinced Gorozidis to move to East Brighton. It led to the highlight of his SFNL career when in 1993 the Vampires won the Division One premiership, defeating the all-conquering Noble Park against all odds. Tough as nails, was Ostle, and he inspired his troops to be just as resilient. He had an amazing ability to motivate his players and get the best out of them. One of his most famous disciples, the legendary Tom Hafey (Ostle coached all of the Hafey boys at East Malvern), wrote in his book that Ostle was a truly inspiring coach, which is a tremendous tribute to the great man. Recruited to St Kilda as an 18-year-old in 1980, Gorozidis booted 34 goals in 13 games to top the goalkicking at the Saints in just his second year at the club. Dubbed ‘the Golden Greek’, he quickly became a fan favourite at Moorabbin Oval. Ostle left an indelible mark on every player he coached and his impact at both clubs will never be forgotten. He spent just one more season at the Saints before crossing to “I was pretty lucky I was playing with good players,” he said. In 1995 he went down to T.H. King Oval where South Yarra were playing at the time to ask if he could play one final game with them on the same ground he that he made his debut with East Malvern. Ian Birkett - Eastern Suburbs Churches Football Association the spectacular. He played his best footy as a blisteringly quick onballer, but was equally dangerous up forward and was a renowned goalkicker. With strong hands, lovely foot skills and ability to play multiple positions, Rabbit was the complete package. “Later in the dressing rooms they watched as dad took off his footy boots and the stops of his boots had broken through (the soles) and his feet were bleeding. John said he washed his feet, put his shoes on and hobbled home.” “And I’m still there 20 years later!” Hill said with a laugh. He eventually played 145 matches for the Yarras’ reserves and thirds sides, and even captained the magoos at the ripe old age of 50. But despite his impressive list of playing achievements, it’s Hill’s mountain of off-field work that is most noteworthy. He was secretary of East Malvern from 1969 until the club folded, during which time it had grown from one senior team to having two senior and eight junior sides. And it was the demise of his beloved club that spurred him on to devote almost his entire life to community football. “I learnt after East Malvern folded that I didn’t ever wanted to be involved in anything like that again so I guess it’s just a matter of trying to keep things going,” Hill said. “I know what it’s like for just myself personally not to have a club where you’ve played 300 games and won seven Best and Fairests to go back to with a few bragging rights because the club doesn’t exist anymore.” A more humble champion than Ian Birkett you will not find. Affectionately known to most as Rabbit, Birkett was an out and out superstar of the ESCFA, the dominant player of his era. But you will never hear him say as much. In fact, he will likely be slightly embarrassed reading this article, such is his modesty. However, there is no denying his standing as one of the all-time greats of the ESCFA. He was also acting captain of East Malvern’s 1969 premiership team and claimed the SESFL Division Two Best and Fairest in the same year. Hill has also been actively involved in the SESFL and SFNL since 1969 as ladder secretary, statistician and historian, and was a former Division Two scribe for the SFNL Record for more than a decade during the 1990s and 2000s. When East Malvern disbanded due to financial difficulties after the 1984 season, Hill became a bit of football nomad, playing with several clubs outside the SESFL/SFNL between 1985 and 1994. He is currently serving a second stint as Yarras president (his seventh year in the role) and there are no signs of slowing down for this selfconfessed “footy nut”. From those humble beginnings Birkett went on the win the ESCFA Under 17s league Best and Fairest and soon developed into a supremely versatile senior footballer with a penchant for 28 | SFNL RECORD 2015 Gorozidis then played six seasons with VFA club Sandringham in the late 80s before he joined ESPCFA club Bentleigh in 1990. He had immediate success too, bagging a truckload of goals and winning a premiership in his first year at the club. Throughout his career, Gorozidis was a solidlybuilt forward who knew where the goals were and he went on to become one of the most prolific goalkickers the SFNL has seen. He is the only man to have been crowned the Southern League’s leading goalkicker on four occasions, which he achieved during his stints with Bentleigh, East Brighton and Murrumbeena. His well-known nickname was given to him by his first coach at Burwood United, who coincidentally was fellow 2015 SFNL Hall of Fame inductee Jim Honey. Birkett, aged just 11 at the time, was playing in the Under 15s with his older brother when Honey likened him to a rabbit because of his smaller body, his zip and his willingness to burrow in for the footy. It has stuck with him ever since. In his prime, Hill was a tall centreman with pace to burn. He debuted with East Malvern in 1967, playing 301 games for the club and winning seven Best and Fairest awards along the way, including an incredible six in a row between 1967 and 1972. Footscray in 1983. But his career at the top level career ended at the year’s end after a total 34 games and 74 goals. It comes as no surprise then that Hill was instrumental in reforming South Yarra after their recess in 2006. Gorozidis was the SFNL’s leading goalkicking that year with 67 goals. “I’ll never forget that year, ’93... That was probably the most enjoyable moment in my local footy career,” Gorozidis said. He won back to back SFNL goalkicking awards in 1998 (98 goals) and 1999 (68) during his second stint with the Demons and added his fourth at Murrumbeena in 2001 with 91 majors. He helped the Beena win the Division Two flag two years later. Although undeniably a prodigious talent, Gorozidis said his teammates had a lot to do with his success during his SFNL days. “He was pretty much known as the superstar of the ESCFA in the A-Grade sides,” Honey recalled. “He was a magnificent mark of the ball and he could take screamers over packs and things like that and did so on a regular basis throughout his career.” Birkett proved remarkably durable over his career too, playing over 400 games with both Burwood United and the now-defunct SFNL club Mt Waverley-Burwood. In his prime he won four ESCFA A-Grade Best and Fairest awards between 1985 and 1990 and was also crowned the ESCFA’s leading goalkicker in 1985 (84 goals) and 1987 (70). But Birkett said that his career highlights were undoubtedly the two flags he played in with Burwood United. He won his first premiership medallion in 1983, before taking a hiatus from footy the following year to go travelling overseas with a mate. He returned to the club in 1985 and was a dual premiership player by season’s end. “That’s what you play for, you know,” Birkett said. “I was lucky enough as a junior we were in a lot of finals. We were pretty strong back then, Burwood... but to win the senior (flag) obviously that’s the ultimate.” Birkett may be loath to speak about his glittering career, but those that witnessed him will agree that he was one of the greatest ESCFA players of his time. WWW.SFNL.COM.AU | 29 SOUTHERN FOOTBALL NETBALL LEAGUE SFNL MEDIA DESK GETTING TO KNOW THE HALL OF FAME INDUCTEES / WILL HUNTER John Bennett Southern Football Netball League There is no doubting that John Bennett is larger than life. He cut an imposing figure on the field during his playing days at East Brighton and he is a wonderful character off it. After a taste of top level footy with St Kilda and Footscray in the 1980s, he then joined Sandringham and won their goal kicking award in 1987 and 1988. Bennett then returned to his junior club East Brighton in 1990 and dominated for the next decade as playing coach, in the process becoming one of the greatest players the SFNL has seen. Standing at full-forward the powerfully-built Bennett was an unbeatable goalkicking machine. But he was also versatile enough to have a run in the guts and booted 60 goals in one season playing out of the centre. “I was captain coach – I could play where I wanted to!” Bennett joked. Kevan ‘Icy’ Hamilton Federal Football Club A tall, damaging rover that was super-dangerous up forward, Icy was a true old-school footballer that had the potential to be a champion at the highest level. But the ever-humble Hamilton never really enjoyed the spotlight of the big league, instead preferring the more After beginning his career at McKinnon in 1947 aged just 14, Hamilton played a season with Melbourne’s reserves under legendary coach Norm Smith in 1955. Hamilton was then famously cut from the Demons’ list after a verbal altercation with legendary coach Norm Smith during the 1956 preseason. Hamilton was purported to have sworn at Smith, a claim he has previously denied. “The papers made more of a deal out of it than what it actually was,” Hamilton’s daughter, Joanne Adams, said. 30 | SFNL RECORD 2015 In Bennett’s eight-year stint in charge of the Tunners he led them to two flags, before stepping aside to take up roles as Vice President and Football Manager – positions he still holds. And his influence in turning the downtrodden club around cannot be overstated. Over his 17-year SFNL coaching career, Bennett finished with four premierships from seven grand finals, earning him selection as the coach (he was also picked as a player at full forward) of the SFNL’s team of the past two decades. The popular Bennett was also a member of the SFNL’s radio team for five years until he gave it away at the end of last year. This was something he really enjoyed, and has not ruled out a return to the airwaves down the track. “I loved the radio show it was great fun,” Bennett said. “I tried to make it more than just people listening to scores and that... just trying to have a bit of fun with all the clubs without making it too serious. “That’s what footy’s all about – having a good time.” In such high esteem is Bennett held by the SFNL they have named the Division Two Senior Grade Best and Fairest medal in his honour and his induction into the Hall of Fame is another just reward for one of footy’s great characters. “He would go around and have cups of tea with him afterwards so it wasn’t a big deal... he was friends with him afterwards.” Few players have dominated the Federal Football League quite like Kevan ‘Icy’ Hamilton did. laidback environment of local footy. After two premierships at the Vampires, he took over the reigns as coach of battling second-division club Heatherton in 2002 where he has been a revelation. He joined Carlton a few weeks later and enjoyed a stellar debut season, booting eight goals in his first two matches and finishing the year as the club’s leading goalkicker with 22 majors. But after spending the entire 1957 season in the Blues’ reserves, he was finally granted his wish for a clearance back to his original club McKinnon. From there Hamilton then went on to become arguably the greatest player the Federal Football League has ever seen. Blessed with tremendous pace and skill, Icy was a five-time recipient of the J W Allnutt Trophy as the League’s fairest and best player (including winning four in a row between 1961 and 1964). But his biggest asset was his lethal right foot. With an uncomplicated, fluid action, he was a beautiful kick of the football and rarely missed a target. He could give the ball a mighty roost as well, and regularly practiced having shots at goal from the centre of the footy ground with his older brother. Hamilton also once won a long kicking contest at the Williamstown football oval in 1956 with massive 75-yard (68.5m in the current measurement) bomb. After his playing career ended, his good friend Tom Hafey asked him to join Richmond as kicking coach in 1975. Hamilton gladly accepted and spent three years at Tigerland with T-shirt Tommy. Despite compiling an outstanding football CV over the years, Hamilton’s modest nature meant he was always reluctant to talk about his achievements. But his induction in to the SFNL Hall of Fame will ensure that his name is forever remembered as one of the greatest footballers of a bygone era. Neil Lockhart Southern Football Netball League Nobody encapsulates the spirit of the Chelsea Heights Football Club more than Neil Lockhart. For more than three decades, Lockhart bled navy and red and established the Heighters’ standing as one of the premier clubs in the SFNL over the last 15 years. A full forward/centre half forward, Lockhart joined the club as a player in 1981 back when they were part of the South West Gippsland Football League and he topped the competition’s goalkicking in 1982. But when a spate of shoulder injuries curtailed his career, Lockhart decided to make his mark off the field. He joined the football club’s committee in 1985 (while he was still playing) and assumed the Presidency in 1997. With the exception of a year off from the club in 1992, he remained in both roles until the end of last season. During his time he has seen the club go from strength to strength. Among the highlights were senior SFNL premierships in 1995 (Lockhart was runner that day) and 2000, which saw the Peter Martin - Southern Football Netball League Umpiring can often be a thankless task. Very rarely are the whistleblowers commended by punters and players when the correct decision is made, but there is no shortage of yobbos over the fence to air their grievances in a vitriolic manner when a mistake occurs 10m out from the opposition’s goal. Peter Martin has seen it all and heard just about every sledge in the book during his 36 years as a senior umpire and throughout the decades he’s become one of the most popular umpires in local footy. Martin’s playing career with East Kew in the ESCFA was cut short after a life-threatening car accident in 1978 and he picked up the whistle the following year. He has since officiated well in excess of 750 matches of ESCFA/SESFL/SFNL football. He has also provided invaluable service to the Umpires Association in an off-field capacity, serving 14 years as President, Secretary and Treasurer. club ascend from Division Three to the top grade. Lockhart was also instrumental in initiating and facilitating the redevelopment of the amenities at Beazely Reserve. Such is his standing at the club they named these new facilities in Lockhart’s honour. “We (built) brand new rooms about seven years ago. They were fantastic, on the wing,” Lockhart said proudly. “A terrific facility, we went from the old rooms to, you know, electronic scoreboard, new cricket nets... so it’s a pretty good complex.” Along the way Lockhart has earned almost every accolade the club could afford him, including life membership and induction into the club’s Hall of Fame. Lockhart’s longevity at the club is remarkable. But as the old adage goes, behind every great man is a great woman, and he credits his wife with helping him stay at the club for so many years. “The wife was a big help. She was in the canteen for about 20 years. So she was on board so that was sort of our life,” he said. Although Lockhart’s affiliation with the club has ended in an official capacity, his love for the club hasn’t diminished one bit. He can still be found down at Beazley Reserve on Saturdays pitching in where possible. “(It’s hard to walk away from the club) because I’ve been involved for so long,” Lockhart admitted. “I go down to games and help them where I can.” But it’s Martin’s on-field persona that has seen him earn universal admiration and respect from the entire SFNL community. He has never shied away from admitting his mistakes and he enjoys the constant communication with players, which he says is one of the things that keeps him going. “(The main reason I) continue to umpire is the camaraderie and banter that exists between the umps and between umpires and players,” the popular officiator said. He is also a ripping bloke off the ground too. A colourful and charismatic story-teller, Martin has built up a treasure-trove of cracking yarns throughout his umpiring career which he is only too happy to share. Like the time he marked out the centre circle at Balwyn with a 5kg bag of sugar after the rain had washed the paint away. “And then 80,000 European wasps had arrived!” Martin chuckled. He will also laugh recounting some of the wittiest and funniest sledges he has received over the years, almost of which are unprintable. Martin’s passion and drive for umpiring shows no signs of abating and you can expect to see him continue in orange for a while yet. “I have the best seat in the ground for the greatest game on earth,” Martin said. “I live for footy, I love my footy, I’ve been around a very, very long time, I’ve seen it all and I hope I’m around for a lot longer.” WWW.SFNL.COM.AU | 31 SOUTHERN FOOTBALL NETBALL LEAGUE SFNL MEDIA DESK SFNL MEDIA DESK GETTING TO KNOW THE HALL OF FAME INDUCTEES / JAMES RAKNES GETTING TO KNOW THE HALL OF FAME INDUCTEES / ANDREW PALOCZI Robert Spaulding South East Suburban Football League Ashley ‘Tommy’ Goodes Southern Football Netball League Robert Spaulding runs his football club like a family. Common among teams is a player handbook, but the club takes it a step further adding detailed information making sure everyone is well versed. “The number one goal is to have a happy club,” clarifies Spaulding. “To do that you’ve got to have success, starting with a good structure, culture and values.” Spaulding is committed to the club instilling ownership to the playing group. “Teach them to be leaders and they’ll take a bit more pride,” Spaulding explains. “Maybe they’ll be the next administrators.” A strong believer in youth, Robert says to build the culture while developing the juniors program. “We’re after just five kids a year coming through,” says Spaulding. “In four years if only half play seniors we’re heading in the right direction.” Understanding the increasing need to entertain the spectators, Spaulding has Auskick grid games at halftime. Allowing club sponsors to award medallions to the kids is great for business. Irish-football and even hurling exhibitions amuse the crowd; the club even has an Oktoberfest function. Through his experience with community football, Spaulding says it’s certainly changed since playing. “It’s faster, not by leg speed, but by team’s skill.” Spaulding also notes that the press continues to evolve. “Football is 12 months a year, it’s nonstop, every spare minute you have,” laughs Spaulding. His board each put around 30-hours a week into the club. “I believe (the) committee should be at training… our culture is if the boys are out there working, we should be too.” “The body shape will change… powerful legs over tall and thin – you need to break through packs,” says Spaulding. The ‘Jim Meneilly’ medal honours perhaps the most influential person in SFL history. Across all three divisional grand finals, the medal is presented to the player on the field that best represents Meneilly’s contribution and achievements. To walk off the field with the ‘Jim Meneilly’ medal is truly special. Meneilly’s influence on the league dates back to the 1960’s. With help from people at his church, he built Bentleigh Methodist FC in 1965. The football club’s aim was to provide an engaging, positive activity for his sons and other youth. Meneilly loved sport and getting the boys involved. Under Meneilly’s presidency the club thrived. In three short years, Bentleigh Methodists FC won their first grand final by 98 points. Jim continually wanted to inspire his team, organising people like Dick Reynolds and Tom Hafey to speak at the club. Fairness was very important to Meneilly. He loved to see good spirited football, which was echoed by his team. Contests with clubs like Donvale United in the ‘70s were always great matches with terrific skills. The era saw generally rough football; yet the crowd was always treated to great 32 | SFNL RECORD 2015 Meneilly’s efforts saw the club travel up through the divisions in the Churches league. In 1975 Jim was invited to join the leagues committee. His attention shifted to all the clubs, rather than just his own. He was a regular fixture at many club game days, joined by a team of volunteers. Mending woolen jumpers, preparing food for spectators, the organiser always had great help. Meneilly was league president by 1983. His style of management benefitted all the people around him: encouraging his colleges whilst challenging them. Working as an investment group manager, Meneilly had many skills that benefited the league. Needing a place to meet, the committee hired a building. When it went up for sale, Meneilly suggested they buy it. The committee explained they didn’t have the money. Jim replied, ‘I’ll get you the money and I’ll teach you how to pay if off.’ Purchasing the building was a pivotal milestone in league history. Jim spent hours at the league office doing handy-work. He believed it was worth saving money if he could fix things himself. He added large meeting rooms, constructing much of all the timberwork himself. President until 1989, Meneilly left the league in very capable hands. Following his passing in 1990, the league established the medal in his honour. Every year, Jim’s sons travel to each divisional grand final to personally award the winner with their father’s medal. The boys describe Jim as the ‘fix-it’ man. He led by example, he looked out for everyone with a readiness to teach. He stood for fair play and good sportsmanship. Ashley Goodes was known as ‘Tommy’ due to his diminutive stature, which resulted in him being compared to Tom Thumb, but his achievements as a Cheltenham football club player and as an administrator were far from small. as Vice Chairman of the SFNL board. Goodes’ involvement in administration at Cheltenham continued until 2002 – 53 years after he started playing for the club. Current Cheltenham President, Colin Anderson, speaks of how involved Goodes was at the club. “He was a Cheltenham person through and through and every Friday afternoon he could be found pushing the line marker around the ground and then inside the change rooms ensuring that they were in pristine condition for the teams on Saturday.” Such was his modesty, Goodes repeatedly refused to accept nominations to become a life member of the club. He finally gave in to continued pressure and was made a life member. Goodes’ playing career for the Rosellas spanned from 1949 to the mid 1960s. He played alongside Jack Barker and Kevin Roberts in Cheltenham’s 1958 Reserves premiership side. He was also awarded life membership of the SFNL in 2002. A few years after he hung up the boots, Goodes began to take on various administrative roles for the Rosellas, starting in the 1970s. These included being a committeeman, Treasurer, Secretary and President. He was also on the Federal Football League board in the early 1980s and served Anderson says, “Tommy was loved by all at Cheltenham,” and the club played a major part in his life, second only to family. Stan Le Lievre South East Suburban Football League Stan Le Lievre had an outstanding and lengthy career as a player, coach and football administrator. Prior to his current induction to the Hall of Fame, his contribution to the sport had received previous recognition. His son, Neil, speaks of an award presented to his father, which he held in high esteem. Reading from a clipping he says, “President of the South East Suburban Football League, Stan Le Lievre, has won the 1985 National Football League Merit Award for long and outstanding service to football. The prestigious NFL award is presented annually to one person in each state. Le Lievre was nominated by the Victorian Football League to commemorate a playing and administrative career which began in Katandra in the Goulburn Valley in 1935.” Le Lievre’s long and distinguished service to Australian football was also acknowledged by the Victorian Football Union in 1977, which gave him an award. He was President of the South East Suburban Football League (SESFL) between 1968 and 1974 and took on the role again in 1983. Le Lievre also served in other administrative positions including Secretary of the SESFL in 1975, and two stints on the executive board for that league. He was on the Caulfield Oakleigh District Football League The AFL awarded a certificate to Goodes to honour his 50 years of service to the sport. It is fitting to see such a devoted club man inducted into the SFNL Hall of Fame. executive between 1957 and 1962. As a player, his ability saw him recruited by St Kilda in 1939 after he earned an extraordinary four senior best and fairest awards for Katandra between the ages of 16 to 19. Time served during World War II prevented Le Lievre from playing for the Saints until 1945, but he went on to record 20 games for the side. His son speaks of the day in 1947 at the Junction Oval when Le Lievre had the unenviable task of playing on Melbourne forward Fred Fanning, who recorded his famous 18-goal record for a game, which still stands. “Dad played on him to half time and then they put someone else on him in the third quarter. He did such a bad job they put dad back on him in the last quarter,” Neil says. Le Lievre was quoted in the Age as reflecting 50 years later, “The ball was coming down quickly from blokes like Norm Smith and Fred was a very big man, hard to get around. Somebody said I should grab hold of his footy nicks and pull them off every time the ball came down, but they would have run out of nicks.” After finishing up at the Saints Le Lievre went on to play for Oakleigh in the VFA in 1948- and then became the inaugural coach of the newly established Oakleigh District in 1950. He was a playing coach and led the team to its first A Grade flag in 1953. “Dad was known for driving the district players around in the back of his Plymouth Ute. That’s what you used to do to get the boys to the football in those days,” Neil reflects. He inherited this trait from his father, transporting junior players in the back of his bread truck in his days as coach of St Mary’s. Neil says his dad “was respected by his peers”. Speaking of his father’s time at Oakleigh District, Neil says, “He was their first go to man.” The SFNL has previously honoured Le Lievre for his vast contribution to the game by naming the medal awarded to the best on ground in Division Three Reserve Grand Finals after him, but it is appropriate that he has now been inducted into the Hall of Fame. As Neil says, “He really loved his football.” WWW.SFNL.COM.AU | 33 SOUTHERN FOOTBALL NETBALL LEAGUE SFNL MEDIA DESK GETTING TO KNOW THE HALL OF FAME INDUCTEES / WILL HUNTER David Martin - Southern Football Netball League Key defenders are close to the most important players in any footy side, yet they are often typecast as unfashionable and never get the kudos they deserve. You have to go all the way back to 1983 to find the last time a key backman won the Brownlow Medal (North Melbourne great Ross Glendinning), which is what makes David To win one league Best and Fairest while playing as a tall defender is a terrific effort. To win six in a row across two separate competitions is frankly unbelievable. But that’s exactly what he did with Bentleigh in the late 90s and early 2000s. Martin, a 6-foot-3 centre half back, joined the Demons in 1995 and quickly established himself as one of the side’s most influential players, earning himself the nickname ‘freak’ – a nickname Bentleigh President Garry Matlock said he thoroughly deserved. “He was a freakish player. At local community level to see that type of player running around and playing on the quality players that he played on... yeah he was a freak,” he said. “He was an outstanding mark... He wasn’t a leaper, he didn’t leap over players all the time, but his judgement was incredible. “We used to sort of say ‘we don’t need anyone else there in the backline because we have David’ because he just had this ability to read the play.” In his second year at Bentleigh he won the first of seven consecutive club B&Fs, before going on to claim three SFNL Division One Best and Fairest awards in a row between 1997 and 1999. The Demons transferred to the VAFA in 2000 and Martin’s dominance continued, winning comp Best and Fairests in Divisions Four, Three and Two in successive years. The ultimate success, however, unfortunately eluded Martin during his time at the Demons, though twice they were runners up in the VAFA (2000 and 2001). Martin was officially recognised for his illustrious career when AFL Victoria presented him with an Outstanding Individual Achievement Award in 2008. He is also a life member of the Bentleigh Football Club. Matlock described Martin as a “scrupulously fair player” and was unequivocal in his praise of him as a person. “He is a real gentlemen and a lovely fella. Tremendous guy,” Matlock said. He also praised Martin’s loyalty to the club, which was most evident when he stuck by his mates as the club transitioned into the Ammos, rather than chasing the big bucks he could have commanded at other SFNL clubs. A humble and unassuming champion, Martin’s induction into the Hall of Fame is a just reward for one of the SFNL’s greats. Do you have a club stalwart playing a milestone game on the weekend? Knight @Apaloczi Home team Lyndale was the underdog against secondplaced Ashwood, but the Pumas competed well to trail by just 10 points at the last change. The Magpies then skipped away, recording a 31-point victory after keeping the Pumas scoreless in the last stanza. Chris Meyers was the winner’s most productive goal scorer with three and Mitch Saunders was its best player. Round 12 promises plenty more action and excitement. Trent Davey continued his impressive form for Moorabbin with his six goals helping to defeat South Yarra by 17 points. The Kangaroos led at every change and the Lions were lucky not to trail by more than 26 points at half time. At that stage South Yarra was hanging on, courtesy of an accurate six goals straight compared to its opponent’s 9.8. By the last change the margin blew out to 42 points in favour of the Kangaroos as the Lions lost their sense of direction, adding only four behinds for the third quarter. Seven last quarter goals to three added respectability for South Yarra. Jay Milford-Robertson was named the best player for the victorious Kangaroos. and occupy fourth spot on the ladder. This is likely to be The visiting Mount Waverley had to work hard against Hallam. The Hawks were only a couple of goals behind at the long break. The Mountain Lions increased their lead to five goals by three quarter time, but eventually won by 22 points. Luke Galle added five goals for the day, taking his season tally for the Mountain Lions to 45. Ben Beecroft was their best player. Black Rock faced a challenge, coming off a loss, and travelling to Roy Dore Reserve to take on Carrum Patterson Lakes. The Jets went into the last quarter with a five-goal lead and got home by 11 points. Adrian Lane played an important part late in last week’s game to help the Jets go close to stealing the game and seems to have gained confidence, booting 6 goals this time to help his side win. Cooper Ferries added four goals for the winners and Brendan Stephenson was the Jets’ best player. Endeavour Hills led at every change and won by 27 points, although opponent Dandenong showed character battling the game out and winning the final term. The Falcons’ Shane Peake is still topping the goal kicking table for the division after a six-goal haul. He finished in the winner’s best player list, behind Neil Peake. Mount Waverley vs Ashwood (Mayfield Park) Ashwood is flying and sits second on the ladder, only being kept out of top place on percentage. However, this week’s game presents a serious challenge for the Magpies having to play away against Mount Waverley. The Mountain Lions are just a game behind the Magpies the match of the round and should go down to the wire, but Ashwood will do just enough to claim victory. South Yarra vs Black Rock (Fritsch Holzer Park) South Yarra has a lot to play for in this home match against the might of Black Rock. A loss here would most likely see the Lions slip two games outside the five. This won’t be an easy game for the Jets who have come back to earth a little recently, but Black Rock will have too much class and should triumph by a few goals. Dandenong vs Lyndale (Greaves Reserve) Playing at home, Dandenong has an opportunity to achieve a much-needed second win for the season when it plays Lyndale. The Pumas’ season has not been inspiring and it would not be a major surprise to see the Redlegs mount a genuine challenge in this clash, but Lyndale will manage to do enough in the end to get the points. Hallam vs Carrum Patterson Lakes (Hallam Reserve) Even playing on its home turf is unlikely to be enough to give Hallam much hope of defeating Carrum Patterson Lakes, but the Hawks never quit and are sure to put on a good show for their fans. It won’t be enough to win and CPL should eventually break away to win by a comfortable margin. Sandown vs Endeavour Hills (Edinburgh Reserve) Sandown will hope to have renewed vigour against Endeavour Hills as it enters this home match refreshed after a bye. The suspicion is that the Falcons will be too good and will maintain their hopes of clinching a spot in the finals. Moorabbin gets to rest up as it has the round 12 bye WWW.SFNL.COM.AU | 37 SOUTHERN FOOTBALL NETBALL LEAGUE DIVISION 3: ROUND 12 2015 DIVISION 3 SENIORS FIXTURE ROUND 1 11-Apr ROUND 7 23-May Black Rock 11.17.83 def South Yarra 5.5.35 Lyndale 13.6.84 def Dandenong 5.11.41 Moorabbin 19.13.127 def Southern Dragons 10.8.68 Ashwood 11.8.74 def by Mount Waverley 14.8.92 C.P.L 22.15.147 def Hallam 6.7.43 Endeavour Hills 13.12.90 def Sandown 10.10.70 Black Rock 21.19-145 def Endeavour Hills 7.7-49 Lyndale 9.8-62 def by C.P.L 18.10-118 Moorabbin 9.8-62 def by Ashwood 14.9-93 Dandenong 9.4-58 def by Sandown 15.12-102 Southern Dragons 7.11-53 def by Hallam 8.12-60 South Yarra 5.16-46 def by Mount Waverley 12.5-77 ROUND 2 18-Apr Dandenong 5.4.34 def byBlack Rock 10.14.74 Southern Dragons 8.12.60 def by Lyndale 10.20.80 Mount Waverley 10.17.77 def by Moorabbin 11.12.78 Hallam 8.3.51 def by Ashwood 10.8.68 C.P.L 12.10.82 def Sandown 9.12.66 South Yarra 9.14.68 def by Endeavour Hills 10.14.74 ROUND 3 25-Apr Black Rock 28.26-194 def Southern Dragons 1.4-10 Lyndale 7.11-53 def by Mount Waverley 15.5-95 Moorabbin 16.12-108 def Hallam 13.12-90 Ashwood 14.10-94 def Sandown 4.9-33 Endeavour Hills 11.15-81 def by C.P.L 18.11-119 Dandenong 6.9-45 def South Yarra 14.10-94 ROUND 4 2-May Black Rock 17.14-116 def Hallam 8.7-55 Sandown 14.10-94 def Lyndale 13.12-90 Moorabbin 23.12-150 def Endeavour Hills 16.8-104 C.P.L 22.17-149 def Ashwood 8.3-51 Dandenong 5.5-35 def by Mount Waverley 17.19-121 Southern Dragons 3.7-25 def by South Yarra 11.11-77 ROUND 5 9-May Mount Waverley 11.8-74 def by Black Rock 12.12-84 Hallam 4.9-33 def by Lyndale 10.6-66 Sandown 8.10-58 def by Moorabbin 9.9-63 Endeavour Hills 7.20-62 def by Ashwood 10.8-68 South Yarra 11.10-76 def C.P.L 9.7-61 Southern Dragons 5.10-40 def by Dandenong 14.8-92 ROUND 6 16-May Sandown 8.7-55 def by Black Rock 15.23-113 Endeavour Hills 20.17-137 def Lyndale 16.10-106 Carrum Patterson Lakes 78 def Moorabbin 57 Ashwood 9.14-68 def South Yarra 9.8-62 Mt Waverley 17.12-114 def Southern Dragons 10.8-68 Hallam 8.9-57 def by Dandenong 3.7-25 ROUND 8 30-May Black Rock 16.21-117 def Lyndale 11.11-77 Dandenong 5.9-39 def by Moorabbin 19.16-130 Ashwood 28.14-182 def Southern Dragons 6.7-43 Mount Waverley 10.14-74 def C.P.L 8.13-61 Sandown 7.14-56 def by South Yarra 10.9-69 Hallam 11.4-70 def by Endeavour Hills 16.14-110 ROUND 9 13-Jun Black Rock 11.9-75 def by Ashwood 14.10-94 Moorabbin 10.14-74 def by Lyndale 14.14-98 Dandenong 7.10-52 def by C.P.L 17.15-117 Southern Dragons 4.1-25 def by Endeavour Hills 29.16-190 Mount Waverley 18.16-124 def Sandown 12.10-82 South Yarra 13.17-95 def Hallam 3.4-22 ROUND 13 11-Jul Black Rock v Dandenong Lyndale v Southern Dragons Moorabbin v Mount Waverley Ashwood v Hallam Sandown v Carrum Patterson Lakes Endeavour Hills v South Yarra SOUTH YARRA BLACK ROCK Ground: Fritz Holzer Park (Melway Ref 45 G12) Telephone: 0419 140 476 Telephone: 0417 015 387 Colours: Red and Black Colours: Royal Blue Yoke, Maroon, Gold Lion Senior Coach: John Burke ROUND 14 18-Jul Southern Dragons v Black Rock Mount Waverley v Lyndale Hallam v Moorabbin Sandown v Ashwood Carrum Patterson Lakes v Endeavour Hills South Yarra v Dandenong Senior Coach: Brett Devlin ROUND 15 25-Jul Black Rock v Mount Waverley Lyndale v Hallam Moorabbin v Sandown Ashwood v Endeavour Hills Carrum Patterson Lakes v South Yarra Dandenong v Southern Dragons Ground: McDonald Reserve, Black Rock Reserves Coach: John Sinclair Thirds Coach: Michael Bennett Reserves Coach: Daniel Mahoney # The first half seemed a little flat from the sidelines, with neither side being able to dominate the other. There were no highlights of any great note, but in saying that Tinder’s boys walked back to the rooms at halftime 28 points in front. Lyndale got the jump on us in the third quarter running the ball & creating the loose man. Too much work was left to a few. This enabled Lyndale to whittle our lead to 8 points closing in on 3/4 time. The Coach gave his boys a “quiet” spray at the break which seemed to have the desired effect. The boys put on their best display for the game, dominating the possession count for the term & not allowing the home side many entries into their 50. A 5 goal win was the end result. A somewhat ugly win but sometimes you have to win ugly! As the Coach says, enjoy the “W” then get back on the track during the week. The Prez would also like to thank Steph and Burnsy for helping out on the sidelines. I’m sure the trainers & the boys appreciated your assistance! Barry Kenna & Co. Solicitors Reserves Report: Off we went to Lyndale in a hope to turn around our recent form. After some poignant words from Jona before the match, we came out firing on all cylinders. Was this the same group as the week before? The movement into the forward line was impressive. The delivery to our forwards was spot on. The run from behind was constant, the work around stoppages was consistent. All players had an impact throughout the game with Silky, JB, Tarqs, Chep and Jezza to name a few, really kicking it up a gear. It’s said each week that this is a team game and this week a ‘team’ played the game that saw us head back towards our best. It showed that we are more than capable as a group and that the baseline has now been set for the remainder of the season’s games. Thank you again to all support staff and the smiling supporters. It was a tight first half with Black Rock holding a small lead. Going against a 3 goal breeze in the 3rd term we were able to extend our lead with HALLAM Seniors and Reserves - Sponsored by Rapid tune Hallam After a narrow loss last weekend, the boys were keeping their hopes up about coming up against an inform Mt. Waverley. This week welcomed Daniel Conner back to the seniors after a few good displays in the magoos. Shane Thomas also earned a promotion to the senior team from our under 19s and showed experience beyond his age. The seniors were again cut short going down by 22 points and seems that only a 5 minute lapse in concentration accounted for the loss. Another narrow defeat and the signs of this DANDENONG Round 11 saw defeats at the hands of Endeavour Hills, Dingley (Netball) and Southern Dragons/ Doveton (Thirds). Not a single win on the field/court last weekend, but our minds move towards Lyndale, Chelsea Heights and Keysborough for our four sides. Last Saturday night was our ‘Last Man Standing’ function. A great night was had by all – A huge thank you to Emma for organising the night – it wouldn’t have been possible without all her hard work and effort. Football All eyes were on Cameron Riley in game number 100 for the Redlegs. A strong start by the Seniors saw plenty of run, carry and link-up play from the boys, but that dropped off after the first. The day didn’t get much better for us, as a poor second quarter cost us in the end - losing by 27-points. Chris Arnold kicked four goals up forward whilst Stephen Young was the some great team football. Our pressure and spread was the best it has been all year. It was a tight last qtr with Carrum fighting back however we managed to hold on for a well deserved victory. Better players on the day were Aida with 6, Brendo who worked hard all day around the ground, and our midfield complete with Sunshine, The snow leaopard and Dart dominant through the middle. Brighton TOYOTA > Reserves : After 3 big games in a row, the team was slow out of the blocks. Battled hard after half time, but can’t afford to play 2 qtrs against fellow finals contenders, going down by 5 goals in the end. Solid games from Baina, Big Ben & The Ironing board. Another big game this week if we want to keep the double chance hopes alive. TWB > Thirds: Unfortunately had forfeit this game due to numbers, need guys to be a bit more committed here. Make sure everyone is communicating with Mick/ Parrot & hopefully this is a minor hiccup/ group show Hallam is moving forward as a team and the shellacking’s are over. The Magoos also fell frustratingly short which was was meant to be a close one with the 2 team positioned the same on the ladder. Best of the day were: Andrew ‘Stumpy’ Daly, Shane Thomas, Luke Johnson and Emilio Williams Thirds – Sponsored by Fortys plastering Sandown came to the home of the hawks ‘the nest’ in what was redemption for the hawks. Although the injury list took its toll and we were 3 down at half time. Again, the boys fought hard all day and the score line didn’t change from last week. shining light on a dark day for the Redlegs as he dominated in a best on ground performance. The reserves put up a gallant effort but were outclassed by a better team in the end. Whilst it may be a loss, it’s a great result considering Endeavour Hills’ Reserves results this year. The addition of Shannon Deszcz from Lyndale provided a huge presence for us up forward whilst Jarrod Lapthorne (best on ground) and Jason McNee dominated in the guts providing us a record number of clearances. Thirds A game that we perhaps should’ve won... We just squandered our opportunities going forward, butchering our goal kicking. Josh Furborough and Keegan Hunt killed it all day whilst Simon Grimston was instrumental down in defence in just his second game of AFL. Hopefully the Thirds will fare better next round... once off.. Telstra Shop Sth Melbourne > Jetballers: Both Jetballers teams lined up against Clayton In Round 11 and both teams came away with the points in comfortable wins. The Div 3 side got off to a shaky start with Clayton taking the lead at quarter time. However in a great strategic move by coach Priscilla Koch, Jasmine Kick moved from GK to GS and dominated the attacking circle for the rest of the game in a best on ground performance. The Div 5 side didn’t have any trouble settling into the game. Strong performances across the ground saw the win never in doubt. Great work Jetballers! The boys as well played until the final siren and the game ended up in a draw for both teams. Although the 4 points would have been great. It was shared with 2 each and still in the 5. Our third loss for the year puts us down to third on the ladder - a costly loss indeed. However, we’ll put it behind us as we take on Chelsea Heights next weekend - a chance to redeem ourselves. Once again, we need to get to training this week to ensure we continue to work on the areas we’re weakest at. WWW.SFNL.COM.AU | 45 SOUTHERN FOOTBALL NETBALL LEAGUE DIVISION 3: CLUB NOTES DIVISION 3: CLUB NOTES ENDEAVOUR HILLS MyPunter.com Senior Report The Falcons extended their win streak to 4 games, this time taking down the valiant Dandenong Redlegs. With the finals still within our sights, every week is important and every 4 points is important. Dandenong brought the pressure and turned up the heat. The Falcons however were up to the task despite missing some key personnel. Shane Peake was ever reliable in front of goal, kicking 6 goals and putting his stamp on the competitions leading goal kicker race. The Peake brothers were solid all day, whilst Van Hoesel, Brooks and debutant Matwijkiw were all good contributors. The Falcons weren’t headed all day and at one stage in the final quarter the margin was above 50 points before Dandenong kicked a few late goals to lower the final result. The Falcons are now only our by percentage and it’s any week now where we can find ourselves in the top 5. All sights are set on next week’s game against Sandown, hoping to reverse the result we had there last year when we were beating by 100+ points. Another team performance where all players contributed resulted in a 63 point win for the Falcons. Jarrett was handy with 3 goals, whilst Jordan Lindsay and Tui Craik were very good performers. We hope to see the boys continuing to win and continuing to put their hands up for senior selection as we continue the journey to get all 3 of our teams in the finals. Melbourne Outdoor Blinds Thirds Report The thirds unfortunately were short on numbers and were able to take the field, but with a couple of injuries and couple players going up to the reserve’s, the Falcons had to forfeit the game in the second half. We’d like to thank Cerberus for lending us a few players to play out the final half so both sides could still get a full hit out. The forfeit didn’t alter the result as Cerberus were too dominant on a day with very few highlights for the Falcons. A player on the comeback trail however got through a whole game and was the only goal kicker for the Falcons. By all reports, it was the best goal for the day. Congratulations on the return Calvin Muscat. Snap Fitness Reserve Report 11 from 11 and continuing to roll on. We wish him a speedy recovery. seniors against Ashwood. Bit unlucky not to have a full complement of senior players available for selection otherwise the result may well have been a lot closer... we now head to Dandenong with a full head of steam. Also thanks to the large amount of Ashwood people that stayed for a couple of quiet ones after the match. Also in the Ressies yesterday while the result was terrible the guys battled it out with no bench from half time. If you do these things the results will look after themselves. Seaford away from home by 37 points. Siona kicked 2 goals, whilst Sarah Beattie and Georgia Punton were in the best players yet again. The division 5 team enjoyed another week off with a bye. Endeavour Hills Future Stars Program Endeavour Hills Under 17’s Division1 team keep the momentum going with a 20 point win over Pakenham. Joel Robertson was handy booting 4 goals and Jason Loomes kicked a pair again. Endeavour Hills are now 2 games clear on top of the ladder. They matched it with us for large part of the game, but mental lapses by Hallam and good discipline by us allowed us to run away with the 4 pts. Galley was dominant up forward again with 5 goals and good to see Beeza back to his best with a strong performance in the ruck. Jazz was his usual self, taking countless contested marks and trying to stop all of Hallam’s forward entries. Capt Bitch Mathers put in a great captain’s game racking up plenty of possessions, Taz was relentless in defense adding in a strong overhead marking element to his game. MOORABBIN Butchers Club Match Report Seniors Very pleased to get the win on Saturday against a determined South Yarra. We started really well and could have easily put the game beyond doubt by half time if we had of converted well with 17 scoring shot to 6 in the first half. Big Milky was great up forward with 3 goals with an even spread of goal-kickers with 5 other single goal-kickers: Browny, Jezz, Bin, Zac & Jism. Burnsey & Mitch dominated in the middle and around the ground, Reserves With so many players unavailable this week it was always going to be a tough job against a strong South Yarra team. The game was a relatively low scoring affair, and we were as competitive as we could be with only one interchange player. Glen Davidson turned the clock back with a very solid performance down back. Rick played & led exceptionally well all day, and was well supported by Bluey, Kyle & Fenno. Jamie also continued his good form, proving that consistent training pays off. A special mention to our Junior pathway partner - Parkmore Junior Football Club, who’s oldest age group 16/17’s we have training with us once a week and over the next year or two we hope will feed into us having an Under 19’s team in the SFL. WWW.SFNL.COM.AU | 47 SOUTHERN FOOTBALL NETBALL LEAGUE DIVISION 3: CLUB NOTES SOUTH YARRA It was a big day at home for the Yarras with plenty on the line for all three football teams and the netballers with a chance to knock off a team above them on the ladder. The Auskickers backed up after Friday night under lights to again display their silky skills at half time of the Senior’s game with thanks to Yo-Get-It. Patrick Devlin kicked a bag in yet another self-proclaimed BOG performance. Well done to the Lionesses who knocked off CPL in a complete team performance. Special thanks to 2016 Captain Julsie Woiwod for playing and dominating! Bendigo Bank Thirds Report The Thirds took on Keysborough whom they sat ahead of on the ladder by percentage only. With Phil Powning being a late out, the Yarras were behind the 8-ball from the first bounce, despite having a 10 man bench. Some questionable umpiring decisions left the Yarras reeling, though there was no excusing their third quarter effort. The Burra kicked 2.9 to one solitary behind to take control of the match and cause an upset. 2 points the final margin after a typical South Yarra comeback, it wasn’t enough to send Frenchy home in style. 48 | SFNL RECORD 2015 All 4 Pets Reserves Report The Reserves and Seniors took on Moorabbin with wins needed to protect their ladder positions. The two games were exact opposites with the South Yarra Reserves never being troubled by the Kangaroos at home. Pizza, Mahn-Dog, The Mignon and Clubber Lange each scored a brace. There were another five single goal kickers including the Batt-Man in his return. Baxter was solid all day, regularly punting the ball in to our forward half from the 10 yard square. Strelec was tireless in the ruck again with Danny Wyatt and Higgo showing class through the guts and up forward. The Ressies ran out 58 point victors and remain in 2nd position. Tower Hotel Seniors Report Yet another slow start in the Senior match had the Lions playing catch up footy against a bigger bodied Moorabbin side. Despite kicking an accurate 6 goals straight for the first half, the Yarras still trailed by 26 points at the long break. Turnovers were punished by the Kangaroos forwards early and we had our work cut out for us. Cory Brady kept the Lions in the contest with some trademark inspiring goals but our third-quarter proved detrimental, scoring only 4 behinds to the ‘Roos 3 goals. Being 7 goals down at the final change wasn’t enough to make us believe it was all over. We piled on 7 goals to 3 in another late comeback, Pipes being especially inspiring taking contested marks and kicking 2 with Taz and Tucky sitting out the last stanza with injuries. Kizza ran hard all day and was our stand out best. Eamon’s battle with the best ruckman in Div 3 was intriguing to say the least. Jordy tried his little heart out again, leading from the front with his countless 1% actions. Ish led the stingiest back 6 in the Division, not giving an inch despite a pre-game finger injury. Stiles stood up in Buckets’ absence with the Big V and Oh-Smooth kicking singles to go along with two each from Patty and Taz. The Yarras got the margin back to a respectable 17 points at full time, but can’t be at all pleased with their efforts, wins are needed to make the five, they now sit 7th. The Yarras look forward to a great Auction/Trivia night on the 4th of July at home after taking on Black Rock. Auction items can be bid on at www. clubbid.com.au. Craig 50 | SFNL RECORD 2015 registering comfortable victories, this week presented two results decided by less than 12 points as well as a low-scoring draw between Skye and Hallam. Match of the round: St Kilda City v Dingley 47 points. The Saints held Dingley’s strong attacking outfit to a mere three goals – kicking R12 fixtures: about a relatively surprising result. Despite St Kilda’s recent run of form seeing them enter the league’s top four, not even the experts JAMES BURNS HIGHETT FOOTBALL CLUB could’ve seen them defeating Dingley by 10 themselves in the process. Entering the game, Dingley were well aware The Round 11 Leader Shooting Star Award Nomination has been awarded to James Burns of the Highett Football Club. James has a high workrate and an ability to read the game, which allows him to be in the right positions and gives him more opportunities to make an impact on the game. He has been consistent in the first half of the season and looks a future senior player to come through the Under 19s system. Congratulations James Burns of the Highett Football Club. Other results: There were three clear standout games from the weekend. Hallam drew with Skye at 60 points apiece while St Pauls held off a fastfinishing Oakleigh District to win by four points. Meanwhile, Cheltenham heaped more misery on Carrum with an 80-68 victory over the Lions. Each result had differing ramifications for finals aspirations of the respective sides as St Pauls became the big winners, catapulting into the top six. With Bentleigh and Hampton defeating East Brighton and Highett respectively to almost certainly ensure a four-team race for the minor premiership. Highett’s improved performance couldn’t change this fact, as this week’s results have ultimately caused a 14-point separation between fourth and fifth on the ladder. The undisputed contest of the round brought Skye: Goal Kickers: L. Broomhall 5, C. Ellis, T. Ross, J. DeLange, B. Black Best Players: R. Smart, L. Broomhall, B. Black, R. Powlesland, J. Hernan, B. On the other hand, Hallam v Carrum Paterson Lakes (4th July) Bentleigh v St Kilda City; St Pauls v East Brighton; Hampton v Dingley; Highett v Madison Talarico was Dingley’s key avenue Oakleigh; and Skye v Cheltenham (11th July) to goal having managed 62 goals prior to As we look forward to round 12 action there is no shortage of quality games. The top 4 do battle in a double-header which is sure to keep observers interested as first play third and second play fourth. However, Hallam, St Pauls and Oakleigh still remain relevant in finals calculations and their matches will be closely watched. this fixture. Astonishingly, Talarico could only register one goal while Pauli booted four majors to move closer in the race for leading goal kicker honours. For next week, it is unlikely there’ll be a better round of quality match-ups prior to finals football. St Kilda and Bentleigh promises to be one of the fixtures of the season with Dingley and Hampton’s match is set to rival it. Ultimately, Bentleigh, Dingley, St Kilda and Hampton continue to lead the competition and this week’s matches will reveal which sides are in the best shape heading into finals. Petalas at Hallam last weekend! Mark field umpired the Thirds, Reserves and Seniors in quick succession and still looked fit enough to go around again. Unfortunately, there were no more games to be had, so he had to wait until Sunday to umpire two more Masters Rules matches. Twenty quarters of open age football in a weekend is an amazing effort, and the only similar achievement in recent years was when Jack Thompson umpired four practice matches in a day at Dingley. With the flu season upon us, several field umpires have been umpiring “doubler headers” on a regular basis to make sure that all appointments are filled. Thanks to everyone who has helped out in this way. Steve Gelsi has been juggling appointments on the SFNL boundary with acting as a boundary umpire observer for the VFL. He reports that former SFNL boundary umpire John Cooper has reached the 50 senior game milestone mark there. He also reports that Coops has been performing some moves on the boundary that wouldn’t be out of place in the Australian Ballet. Big sister Elise, who is one of our senior field umpires, could borrow some of Coops’ moves for her ballet classes. Steve Maunder was appointed to his first senior game last week. Unfortunately, he copped an injury and had to pull out. This could have been a blessing in disguise as he left his boots and umpiring uniform in a plastic bag at Moorabbin the previous Saturday. When the bag was opened at training on Thursday, the socks almost walked out of the change rooms unaided. If Steve hadn’t washed them before 66 | SFNL RECORD 2015 Saturday, he may have been a lonely man in the rooms. Hopefully he gets another crack at the seniors in the next few weeks. The SFNL is a family league and the latest pair of siblings to umpire with us are the Crigans, now that field umpire Sam has signed up younger brother Josh to wave the flags. On the last three Thursdays in July (July 16, 23 and 30), training for all Umpires will take place from 6.00pm at Moorleigh Reserve, Bignell Road, East Bentleigh, instead of Bricker Reserve. Please make sure that you attend the correct training venue. Training on Tuesday nights during this period remains at Bricker Reserve. All female Field, Boundary and Goal Umpires are required to attend a compulsory coaching session on Thursday 23 July at 6.00pm, Moorleigh Reserve. To will have the opportunity to listen to SFNL Umpiring Ambassador and four-time AFL Grand Final Umpire, Stephen McBurney, talk about how you can progress your umpiring career.
