Wudhu (Ablution)
By : Syeda Zahida Naqavi
Wudhu (ablution) is the Islamic
procedure for washing parts of the body
using clean water, generally in
preparation for formal prayers or
recitation of the Holy Qur’an.
The Holy Qur’an says "For Allah (SWT)
loves those who turn to Him constantly
and He loves those who keep themselves
pure and clean.“ (2:222)
Two manifest benefits
• Medical Benefits
 Cleanliness (results in achieving the
equilibrium of the sympathetic and
parasympathetic nerves of the body.
 Improved diastolic
 Eliminates germs from the body
• Spiritual Benefits
 Since performed for the pleasure of the
Creator, it has an educative influence
 The implicit meaning: from head to toe I
strive to obey Allah
The procedure of Wudhu has been simply explained
in the Holy Qur’an. Surah Al-Maida’s verse 6 states:

Discharge of urine
Discharge of excretion
Discharge of gas through anus
A sleep, deep enough to restrict sight and hearing.
However, if the eyes do not see anything, but the
ears can hear, wudhu does not become void.
o Things on account of which a person loses his
sensibility, like insanity, intoxication or
unconsciousness.
o Istihaza (menstrual periods)
o Janabat, and, as a recommended precaution, every
state which requires Ghusl.

It is compulsory to perform Wudhu for all
obligatory Salaat, with the exception of Salat alMayyat (Salaat for the deceased person). In
Wudhu, we wash our face and hands; and wipe our
head and the top of our feet.
 It is waajib to do NIYYAT (have intention) for
the wudhu and that it is for nearness to Allah.
 Certain steps are highly recommended
(MUSTAHAB), but are not Waajib. See slide 11
before starting Wudhu
"I begin my ablution in the Name of Allah. All
praise is due to Allah, Who made water
purifying, and not najis.“
Bismillahi wa billahi wal hamdu lil lahil lazi

First, the face must be
washed from the top of the
forehead, the place where
the hair grows, until the
bottom of the chin. The
width of the face that must
be washed is the distance
between the tip of the
thumb to the tip of the
middle finger. We must
wash our face from top to
bottom.
while washing the face
O Lord! Make my face bright on the Day
when the faces will turn dark. Do not darken
my face on the Day when the faces are bright.

After washing our face,
we wash our right arm,
from slightly above the
elbow down to our
fingertips. This too
must be washed from
top to bottom.
while washing the right arm
O Lord! Give my book of deeds in my right
hand, and a permanent stay in Paradise on
my left, and make my reckoning an easy one.

After our right arm, we
must wash our left
arm; again, from above
the elbow down to the
fingertips, and from the
top to bottom.
while washing the left arm
O Lord! Do not give my book of deeds in my left
hand, n or from behind my back, nor chain it to my
neck. I seek refuge in You from the Hell-fire.

After these washings,
are completed, with the
water that is on our
right hand, we have to
wipe the top of our
head (about one finger
in length). We must not
take any extra water
for this.
while performing Masah of the head
O Lord! Cover me with Your Mercy, Blessings and
Forgiveness.

We then proceed to wipe
our right foot with our
right hand, from the tip
of our toes, up to the
ankle bone with the
water that is remaining
in our right hand. Again,
we must not take any
extra water.
To finish, we wipe our
left foot with our left
hand from the top of
our toes, up to the
ankle bone with the
water that is
remaining on our left
hand.
while wiping the feet
O Lord! Keep me firm on the Bridge (to Paradise) on the
Day when the feet will slip, and help me in my efforts to do
things which will please You, O' Glorious and Mighty!.
