As American colleges and universities continue
to compete for students, we independent colleges
find ourselves increasingly evaluated on the
basis of the value we deliver. To some, that
kind of scrutiny might be daunting, but here at
Centenary College, we welcome it. Thanks to
the generous strategic contributions of our alumni, coupled with
the dedication of our extraordinary faculty and administrators,
Centenary graduates depart our campus well prepared to conquer
the challenges of the job market and to excel in their chosen fields.
While we stand firm in our commitment to the inherent value
of a liberal arts education, we also believe that the business
partnerships, mentoring relationships and hands-on experience
that are hallmarks of a Centenary education set us apart and
strengthen our position as a college of choice for traditional
undergraduate and continuing professional education.

Michelle Graf ’16, Linda Van Winkle Watkins ’62, Camille Dawson ’15 and Susan Gorman ’15.
The Van Winkle name has been a part
of Centenary lore for nearly as long as
the Dome itself. At the beginning of the
20th Century, Charles A. Van Winkle ’00
attended what was then known as the
co-educational Centenary Collegiate
Institute. He later became a College
Trustee and, in 1950, Van Winkle Hall
was named in his honor. His son, Arthur
D. Van Winkle, also served as a Trustee
for 21 years. In the 1980s, the prestigious
Van Winkle Achievement Award was
established in the family’s name.
Since 2008, Arthur’s daughter, Linda Van
Winkle Watkins ’62, has carried on her
family’s proud legacy of stewardship by
serving as a Centenary College Trustee.
For Linda, Centenary is truly family.
She is the stepdaughter of Adelaide S.
Van Winkle ’08 HA and sister of Joan
Van Winkle Cunningham ’59. Her
brother, Daniel, married her Centenary
roommate, Elizabeth “Betsy” Goodson
Van Winkle ’62, and their daughter,
Laura Van Winkle Seehaus ’88, is also
an alumna.
Shortly after graduation from Centenary,
Linda married Thomas “Skip” W. Watkins
III, a Commander in the United States
Coast Guard. After his retirement from
the Coast Guard in 1984, the Watkins
settled in Mystic, Conn. There, Linda
enjoyed a successful career in banking,
becoming Assistant Vice President and
Branch Manager at Citizens Bank, while
raising three children.

In the great tradition of the Van Winkle
family, Linda Van Winkle Watkins has
taken a leadership role, as co-chair of the
ongoing Honor Our Past, Invest in Our

Centenary College’s Presidential Scholars
Program is the College’s most prestigious
merit award. Offered annually, it covers
75% of tuition and affords select students
an exceptional opportunity to grow as
leaders and researchers. Nine students
participated in the program’s first year.
Centenary College Responds to Increased Demand
for Science Education with Laboratory Upgrade
With newly renovated laboratories on the second floor of Trevorrow Hall,
Centenary College is providing modern facilities for growing biology, chemistry
and physics classes. The new technology, fittings and lighting will serve as state-ofthe-art workspace for the College’s burgeoning population of science students.
The renovation was made possible by gifts from generous friends and alumni such
as Carol Harvey Barrows ’61 and Bill Barrows and through funding from the
State of New Jersey’s Building Our Future Bond Act, 2012’s voter-approved bond
program for higher education capital improvements.

Centenary College is Gateway for Fulbright Scholars
Only nine institutions nationwide are chosen to host a Fulbright Gateway Orientation, and
Centenary College was tapped for the third year running. The week-long program acclimates top
scholars from across the globe to living and studying in the United States. Last August, 70 students
from 40 countries were welcomed to campus for interactive workshops on reducing culture shock
and navigating political and academic culture in the U.S.

New Majors
The Equine Studies Department is rolling out a new B.S. degree in Equine Science,
Pre-Veterinary Track, to be offered in fall 2015. This new program responds to
rising student interest in the sciences, particularly veterinary medicine.
The program will blend biology and equine studies classes that are already
offered, giving students a high degree of flexibility after graduation.
This fall, Centenary College unveiled a new Master of Health Administration
(MHA) degree. The innovative program is uniquely designed to address
changing health industry dynamics resulting from
the Affordable Care Act.
The MHA program is relevant for all sectors of the health industry,
including hospitals, pharmaceuticals, physician practice groups
and long-term care organizations. Courses are offered in the
evening in a blended format, with classes meeting in-person
and online.

Turf Field Ready for Action
Golf had their
best finish in

in the CSAC
Tournament.
The Athletic Turf Field Project scored a goal when the long-anticipated official opening of the
J.E. Reeves, Jr. Turf Field took place with a ribbon cutting ceremony on April 15. J.E. (Ed) Reeves,
Jr., President and Treasurer of the Reeves Foundation, lead donor for the project, was on hand
for the festivities. The Centenary lacrosse teams began competing on the FieldTurf XM surface
last spring, while the soccer squads began playing on the new fields in August 2014.

Advancing Centenary
2014 Marks President’s Circle 20th Anniversary
Recently, more than 50 alumni and friends attended the New York City Alumni
Event at Lincoln Center to celebrate the President’s Circle 20th anniversary. In
1993–1994, 12 alumni were identified and recruited to establish the “Founders”
group. These alumni, in conjunction with the President, Chairman of the Board
of Trustees and the College Relations staff, met in February 1994 for an inaugural
meeting. The President’s Circle has now grown to more than 30 members and is
diverse in geography, talent and background.

Centenary’s Equestrian Center held a benefit for facilitydriven needs at the first Crowd the Rail fundraising event,
held on May 3 at the Junior Essex Troop Garden State
Horse Show at the Sussex County Fairgrounds.
A Gala Event Celebrates
Centenary’s Global Community

for UPS Human Resources Department, were honored with the prestigious
Gold Dome Award at Centenary College’s 17th Annual Scholarship Gala. The
event, themed “Celebrating Centenary’s Global Community,” was held on
June 19 at the David and Carol Lackland Center.
The Gala raises funds to help keep a Centenary education accessible and
affordable. Since its inception, the Scholarship Gala has raised over $2.6
million for the Centenary College Scholarship Fund.

PRESIDENT’S REPORT 2013 – 2014
The Independent College Fund of New Jersey
Centenary College continues to benefit from generous corporate and foundation support given through the Independent College Fund
of New Jersey. Begun in 1953, the Fund makes a single, united annual request to corporations and foundations on behalf of the 14
member colleges. For 58 years, the Fund has continued to secure corporate financial support for the State’s independent colleges and to
promote a greater understanding of the importance of maintaining the opportunity for choice between public and private education.
The Independent College Fund of New Jersey represents all of the State’s fully accredited, privately controlled colleges and
universities, except those that are engaged primarily in religious studies.
The following donors contributed to the Fund in calendar year 2013. Most gifts are allocated by formula although a number are
designated to specific institutions. Support in 2013 for independent higher education in New Jersey through the Fund totaled
$1,129,540.
