MAY THE 4 TH BE WITH YOU
SUNRISE OPTIMIST NEWSLETTER – MAY 4, 2016
( MAY THE 4TH BE WITH YOU)
Welcome oi the May 4th Sunrise Optimist Club meeting at Hampton Inn. There
were 15 members present and 2 guests. Marc Hernandez gave our Invocation.
Lew Shoop led us in our Pledge to Allegiance, and Jim Carruthers began our
Optimist Creed. President Gibbs decked out in his Star Wars shirt began the
meeting and welcomed everyone. Several members including our president
started the meeting with jokes about the day.
Mel Parker introduced our program, Monty Stansbury and Richard Cumming from
the Yuma County Public Health District. The gentlemen spoke about mosquito
control. Mr. Cumming has been a vector control specialist for 23 years. He spoke
on 3 kinds of mosquitoes and where they like to breed. Their hang outs included
green swimming pools ( pools the owners do not take care of and are full of
algae), flood control basins, and storm drains. Mosquitoes can breed in horse
troughs, pet bowls, and even in plant water holders. The county uses integrated
mosquito management where they reduce the amount of mosquitoes to a
tolerable level by using some pesticides but mainly ULV cold fogging which
disappears after 10 or 15 minutes with no smell. The Aedes aegypti known as the
yellow fever mosquito loves to feed on humans. He is a sip feeder, where he sips
a little blood and then comes back for more later. People are its host, and this
mosquito bites below the knees, in the daytime, and breeds in 5 mm of water.
They carry the Zika Virus. They are very difficult to control because they have a
small flight range. They love the heat so Yuma is one of their favorite places. More
information about mosquito control can be found at http//www.cdc.gov/dengue/
Robert Land reported that the booth at the fair is clean, and we can use the meat
slicer during fair time. Tim Eisenmann said there was a great turnout at
Continental Night. Sunrise did not win any large prizes. Out of 150 tickets drawn,
Sunrise was the 5th ticket. Small prizes went to Frank Grosbayne, Jim Carruthers,
and Larry Hunt. President Gibbs said he was going to the District Optimist
Conference in Tucson May 6,7 weekend.
Lottery tickets went to Larry Hunt, John McKinley (2), Tim Eisenmann, Bill Weston,
and Peggy Eskew. Attendance sponsor was Lee Gibbs. He drew his own name and
Stan Dombrowski who was not present. Lee remains sponsor. The 50/50 drawing
was held. Tim Eisenmann’s ticket was drawn. He drew a 9 of Clubs, so the pot
continues to grow.
Meeting was adjourned about 7:20 by President Gibbs.
