Isodyne develops
tool-less braid
termination system
for EMI/RFI backshells
Isodyne has developed and manufactured a
patented, tool-less braid termination system
for EMI/RFI backshells, specifically designed
for wire harnesses requiring shielding from
EMI/RFI and lightning protection.
Isodyne’s tool-less termination benefits
begin at assembly, requiring approximately
30% less time for assembly and a cable
assembly that performs better at shielding
EMI because of lower resistance between
the drain wires, overbraid and backshell.
Re-entry for re-pinning or repair is easy
thanks to both individual shields and
overbraid terminating at the backshell with
one spring band.
This efficient technology offers many other
benefits over analog legacy products,
making it more suitable for today’s highly
digitized world: no tools are required for
assembly or disassembly; no solder sleeves
are required; a reduced component count
and reduced weight; a faster assembly
time; and better EMI performance.

MAY 21-23, 2013 SwRI ultraviolet instrument selected for
ESA’s JUICE mission to Jupiter’s icy moons
An ultraviolet spectrograph designed by
Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) has
been selected for flight on the European
Space Agency’s Jupiter Icy Moon Explorer
(JUICE). NASA is funding development of
the instrument, which will observe ultraviolet
emissions from the Jovian system.
“The JUICE mission will let UVS get closeup views of Europa, Ganymede and Callisto
[Jupiter’s three largest moons],” said Dr
Randy Gladstone, principal investigator of
the UVS (ultraviolet spectrograph) and an
Institute scientist in SwRI’s Space Science
and Engineering Division. “We expect these
data will tell us about the composition of the
surfaces and the tenuous atmospheres of
the Galilean moons, and how they interact
with Jupiter and its giant magnetosphere.”
Along with UVS, JUICE will carry 10
complementary instruments designed to
make detailed observations of the giant gas
planet Jupiter and its three largest moons,
Ganymede, Europa and Callisto. These
moons are believed to host bodies of liquid
water beneath their icy surfaces. JUICE
observations could provide insight into the
moons’ potential for supporting life during
future manned missions. The instruments
will also map the moons’ surfaces, sound
their interiors and determine the potential
for life in their oceans.
The JUICE spacecraft is planned for
launch in 2022. The three-year (minimum)
science mission will begin shortly after the
spacecraft’s arrival at Jupiter in 2030.

Loral-built multimission satellite for
HISPASAT Group
begins post-launch
maneuvers
Space Systems/Loral (SSL), the world’s
leading provider of commercial satellites,
has announced that the Amazonas 3 multimission satellite, designed and built for
HISPASAT Group, launched in February and is
successfully performing post-launch maneuvers
according to plan. The satellite deployed its
solar arrays on schedule following its launch
aboard an Ariane 5 launch vehicle provided by
Arianespace from the European Spaceport in
Kourou, French Guiana. The satellite has begun
firing its main thruster to complete its journey
to geostationary orbit.
“It has been a privilege to work closely with
our colleagues at HISPASAT and to see the
successful launch of this important satellite,”
said John Celli, President of SSL. “I would like
to thank everyone at HISPASAT, Arianespace
and SSL for their hard work and dedication to
making this satellite program a success.”

New 2,000hz
multi-axis
vibration system
Commercially available vibration test systems
with the ability to reproduce and accurately
control multiple-input, multiple-output vibration
tests are often constrained by a limited
frequency band. Excessive tare mass and low
natural frequencies of test fixtures are two
contributing factors.
Consequently, the use of such systems in
Department of Defense and spacecraft test
facilities is limited to a select number of test
profiles found in MIL STD documents and/or
platform-specific tests with the frequency
band of interest below 500Hz.
These constraint issues have
now been addressed with the
introduction of a new 2,000Hz,
multi-axis vibration system.
The Tensor 18kN utilizes 12 custom
electrodynamic
shakers
which
are
hydrostatically coupled to the 30 inch square
specimen mounting table, and supported by an
air-isolated, highly damped reaction mass. Each
armature is preloaded against the mounting
table for proper operation. Incorporated into the
vertical axis is a soft-spring, large static capacity
preload actuator, which is required to retain
the table against the preload mechanisms.
Utilizing multiple points of control authority in
conjunction with Coordinate Transformation
control methodology, the Tensor 18kN
produces excellent performance to 2,000Hz.
This unique oil-cooled electrohydraulic system
has been designed, built, tested and delivered
by Team Corporation.

MAY 21-23, 2013 Improving SRTD with resonance phase settings
Long Beach | CA | USA
Traditionally, when test engineers performed
sine resonance track and dwell tests
they have controlled the frequency of the
resonance with little concern for the phase
of the resonance. Now Vibration Research
has developed a method that allows the
test engineer to manually track the phase
value in order to determine the maximum
transmissibility value at a particular
resonance. This method is Advanced UserDefined SRTD Phase-Tracking Control.
The results indicate that the test engineer
ought to manually control the SRTD phase
tracking in order to find the most accurate
location for the peak transmissibility of
a resonance. In order to obtain a phase
of the resonance that will provide the
highest possible transmissibility level for
that resonance, the test engineer should
use a manual control feature to “tweak”
the phase as necessary in order to obtain
the highest possible transmissibility level
for that resonance. This will serve as an
improvement over the traditional “phasetracking” tool or the “resonant frequencytracking” method.

MAY 21-23, 2013 EMCCons
addresses
EMC
and EMI
questions
There are three main EMC considerations to
be addressed in modern spacecraft design:
Faraday cage and thunderstorm risks; heavy
electromagnetic interferences in air and
space; and mutual interferences within the
parts in the aircraft.
EMCCons offers testing for direct and indirect
lightning effects. Not just the electrical parts
are tested for direct lightning effects, but
also CFC (carbon fiber-reinforced composite)
parts. Navigation systems, radar equipment
and other parts that could interfere with
other air and space traffic are tested for
electromagnetic stability, to ensure they do
not disturb other parts, or are disturbed by
other parts. Additionally, high-tech electrical
parts within spacecraft can interfere with
each other; EMC tests must be performed
to ensure that all parts – from the smallest
switches and sensors up to complete
cable harnesses – are sufficiently hardened
electromagnetically.
Important tests offered by EMCCons
to address these risks include: NEMP
(nuclear
electromagnetic
pulse),
EMP
(electromagnetic pulse), LEMP (lightning
electromagnetic pulse), HIRF (high-intensity
radiated fields), HERF (high-electric radiated
fields) and indirect and direct lightning stroke
tests.

Training for space
“Humans manage tasks more successfully
in familiar settings. Translation: substantial
experience in an environment equals effective
performance. For space crews especially, it’s
the difference between life and death. Equally
important, microgravity training prepares
space travelers for physical reactions. If not
prepared for your own physical needs, you can’t
fly the spaceship, run the experiment and enjoy
the rare view.
“Living in a 1g environment, humans don’t
know how to move in microgravity. The
common reaction, swimming and kicking when
floating, proves hazardous and will damage
craft and hurt others. Practical experience in
microgravity and controlling one’s locomotion
reduces stress so you can focus on floating,
working, and having fun.
“For these reasons and more, it is essential to
eliminate as many unknowns as possible so all
aboard may focus on their objective – safe and
successful space flight.”
Astronaut Dr Byron Lichtenberg, ScD, was the
first astronaut to serve as a Payload Specialist.
He has flown 310 orbits, and logged 468
hours in space, which means he is well placed
to understand the need for astronaut training
prior to space flight.
“As a two-mission shuttle astronaut, I can
confirm it is crucial to have Zero-G training
before going into space. NASA has recognized
this for 50 years. This unique environment
challenges you to manage tasks, physical/
mental stresses and locomotion.

MAY 21-23, 2013 ATI Industrial Automation
develops sensing
technology for
NASA
ATI Industrial Automation (ATI), a world-leading
engineering-based developer of robotic peripheral
equipment, was recently selected by NASA to
develop multi-axis force/torque sensing technology
that can be used in space exploration, such
as the Mars 2018 mission. Currently under
development, this new technology will enable
fabrication of a force/torque sensor for the
Mars rover’s robotic arm. Sensor feedback
would allow the arm to guide its coring tool into
rocks and then safely place the rock samples in
the rover’s canisters.
Not limited to space exploration, this
new multi-axis force/torque sensing
technology could be used for a large
variety of applications. Future products
will be enhanced to withstand high
acceleration,
ultra-high
vacuum,
heat sterilization or other severe
environments such as extreme cold
and heat. “This project for NASA will give
us the technology to stay on the cutting
edge,” said Robert Little, COO, ATI Industrial
Automation.

Solid hydrogen
fuel could help
shield satellites
from radiation
UK firm Cella Energy, a spinout of the
government-funded
Rutherford
Appleton
Laboratory, developed the material by
combining
solid
hydrogen
compounds
with plastic fibers as a way of storing and
transporting it more easily for use as fuel.
The researchers believe the material could
make an effective radiation shield for satellite
electronics because it absorbs high-energy
radiation and is less likely than current
aluminum shields to generate secondary
particles that can disrupt equipment.
“NASA is looking at high-hydrogen content
materials as their shields,” said Prof Stephen
Bennington, Cella Energy’s Chief Scientific
Officer and the inventor of the material.
“On the International Space Station, all the
sleeping quarters have ultra-high molecular
weight polyethylene slabs. The amount of
hydrogen in our material is, by weight, 30 to
40% higher.”
The Cella Energy team are now preparing to
test their material onboard the ISS by the end
of the year, after winning a competition run
by the US state funding body Space Florida.
The material is currently undergoing even
more rigorous testing by NASA in advance of
the trial onboard the ISS, where it will be used
to encase a miniaturized radiation monitor
based on technology developed by CERN for
the Large Hadron Collider, and compared to
a second monitor inside a polyethylene shield.

MAY 21-23, 2013 Controllable drive
actuators for space
applications
The unparalleled performance with minimum
volume of CDA Intercorp’s standard modular
components makes the company’s rotary
and linear actuators ideal for high-reliability
applications that are exposed to hostile
space environments. CDA’s polymide-based
insulation system and high-grade stainless-steel
construction motors, gearboxes and rotary
transducers provide ideal controllable drive
actuator solutions for rotary and linear systems
used in space environment applications.
Standard design features include class H225
insulation system, matched coefficient of
expansion materials and high-strength gearing.
The operational environment range for the
company’s typical space application spans
from below -269°C to above +240°C in a hard
vacuum. Higher operating temperatures are
available on request.
The entire product line is based on rugged
modular design concepts. At the heart of
the actuators are high power density and
highly reliable motors. CDA Intercorp may
configure any of its nine frame size motors
as brushless permanent magnet motors, DC
stepper motors, AC induction motors or AC
synchronous motors. Any of these motors may
be complemented with the company’s equally
durable rate or position transducers. Precision
machining of the motor interface to the high-
strength gearing modules ensures reliable,
high-efficiency performance and operation.
A distinct advantage of CDA’s modular product
line is the high torque and power output capacity
within an extremely small diameter actuator
package. This advantage makes the company’s
actuators ideal for space applications where
size and weight are at a premium.
Custom
windings,
operational
voltages,
frequencies, motor drive configurations and
mechanical interface options increase design
flexibility for mechanism design engineers who
must work with size constraints and limited
electronic control options.

COMPOSITES
Composite materials are used in almost all new
aircraft designs and for more and more other
vehicles housing parts from cars to trains.
Engineers require these materials for higher
stability in combination with less weight and
reduced costs compared to metal which has been
the first choice for manufacturing air and surface
vehicles hulls up to now. Advantages, however,
are accompanied by lack of conductivity and thus
by vulnerability to lightning stroke effects.
Composites require sophisticated protection
measures against this natural event, lightning
tests have become essential for airworthiness
approvals.

Solutions
develops new
Parylene
application
process
Plasma Ruggedized Solutions (PRS) is
challenging the boundaries of coating
applications by developing a repeatable
process for applying Parylene at micron level
tolerances.
Parylene or poly-para-xylylene is a versatile
polymer coating that has applications in a
multitude of industries. This hydrophobic,
extreme
temperature-,
moistureand
chemical-resistant coating is deposited via a
chemical vapor deposition process at PRS’s
facilities. The method of vapor phase vacuum
deposition utilized by PRS allows the polymer
to form a structurally continuous film that is
truly conformal to the design and structure
of the substrate upon which it is deposited.
Because of its low dielectric constant,
electrical insulation, high tension strength,
corrosion resistance, high adhesion, low
coefficient of friction and unparalleled
protection properties, Parylene is rapidly
becoming the coating of choice for achieving
electrical isolation and protection for
applications including semiconductor test
probes.
This
achievement
represents
another
milestone in Plasma Ruggedized Solutions’
continuing efforts to develop new, cuttingedge coating processes and technical
application capabilities.
