Annual Report
2012-13
Message
from the Chairman
We too have a dream...
I
n the life of a
country, 15 years is
just the blink of an
eye; in the life of a 60
year old, looking ahead,
it’s often filled with some
amount of trepidation
but when it comes in
the life of a 35 year old
organization working for
the elder cause, it comes
with a resolve to reach
the 50 year milestone with a renewed mandate to
reach further, do more, do better.
HelpAge India, in the past year alone, made the
lives of 1.23 million sick and poor elderly people
a little easier through medical treatment. In this
same year, the number of our senior citizens
stood at 100 million. By 2030, this figure is
projected to reach 200 million! There couldn’t be
a better reason driving us to try even harder to do
more for a larger number.
Over the years, HelpAge has adapted its
programmes to reflect the concerns of our
older population, to address, for instance the
twin problems of isolation and neglect that
sizeable numbers of our urban elderly face. The
AdvantAge Card and the AdvantAge Chapters
for the practise of Active Ageing are both aimed
at overcoming these. Today, membership of the
programme has crossed hundred and twenty
thousand and covers over 160 towns and cities
across the country. In time, this will grow to be a
nationwide movement of and for the elders.
Financial security for elders is another area that
requires to be seriously tackled. Increasing costs
of living, expensive medical services, a lack of
2 • Annual Report 2012-13
an adequate universal pension, all contribute to
make senior citizens very vulnerable. HelpAge
India is working across several forums for the
early adoption of universal pension by state and
national governments, though the sheer numbers
and consequently the financial implications are
truly formidable, especially for a government
with a runaway fiscal deficit.
While activities for the welfare of the
disadvantaged elderly will continue to be the core
of HelpAge India’s work, the years to come will see
an increased emphasis on pursuing a right based
agenda, so that older people are aware of and able
to demand and obtain what they are entitled to,
which apathy and leakages often deprive them of.
Increases in social tension are throwing up newer
challenges for resolution. Abuse of elder people
is a disturbing and increasing phenomenon; it
could get worse in years to come. The recently
enacted Maintenance and Welfare of Parents
and Senior Citizens Act is a step to make abuse
of this kind punishable. However, change must
come from within families and society.
Transforming society is a long, hard and arduous
task, one that HelpAge will work on through its
strong advocacy initiatives. The journey ahead
is full of challenges but as HelpAge India looks
ahead to its next 15 years, the vision remains clear:
a society where the elderly have the right and the
ability to lead active, healthy and dignified lives,
contributing to the present generation as well as
looking to them for empathy and a helping hand.

Message
from the CEO
The year in perspective – An Overview
T
his
year
marks
an
important
land mark as we
complete 35 years
and we remembered
our founder Samson
Daniel and the work
of Mohni Sabharwal
and other Presidents
of HelpAge India.
Through these years,
our work, our staff and volunteers have worked
with the elderly, their associations, Elder Self
Help Groups and their elderly Federations, so
that today we are indeed the representative voice
of India’s 100 million senior citizens ushering in
an Elders for Elders movement.
Reaching the poorest and the farthest,
and among these, the destitute, the ill, the
abandoned, the neglected, the abused, all have
constituted the core aspects of HelpAge India
programmes and initiatives. Our advocacy
initiatives aimed at securing Universal Pension
and Medical Insurance continues with renewed
thrust. We are extremely happy to say that we
have reached out to 1.5 million poor elderly
across the country and will strive to do more in
coming years.
Once again, our flag ship programmes, Mobile
Medical Units (MMU), Support-a-Gran (SaGP),
sight restoration through Cataract surgeries, Age
care and Physiotherapy centres, Old Age Homes
and Day Care centres and the much needed
income generation Self Help Groups received
our consistent support.
It is worth noting that all this work was made
possible only through the unstinted support we
received from thousands of donors like you
across India and the private and public sector
companies who partner with so many of our
programmes to make them successful. Finally,
it is the selfless work of individual members of
our staff who through the wide dispersion of
HelpAge offices and sites across India ensure
that no needy elder is left out, no matter which
part of the country he or she resides in.

Advocacy
in Action
A game of carrom at the recreation centre, Freedom Fighters Colony, Delhi
The Active Ageing experiment that
worked!
“T
hese are the golden years for
enjoying life: laughing with friends,
walks with your spouse, good
food, movies, games with the like- minded”, says
Suresh Palta, President of the Senior Citizens’
Society of The Freedom Fighters Colony in New
Delhi. The spritely 72 years “young” is clearly
leading a life that is enviable but also so easy to
emulate.
Two years ago, HelpAge India donated a full
set of Physiotherapy Equipment to this Senior
Citizens’ Society; with these, the members found
a common cause uniting them. The Society rented
modest premises and a charitable Physiotherapy
clinic was started which was managed by the
office bearers. Soon a Homeopathy clinic was
also started and this group of retirees managed
its activities and spent their morning hours from
9 am to 1 pm very productively and happily. The
shared activity built strong bonds and soon the
group started Recreation Hours. Every evening
through the week, come rain or shine, members
10 • Annual Report 2012-13
of this society would meet in the Centre. There
would be spirited games of carrom, chess, Bridge;
a TV corner was also provided. Every Thursday,
the evening recreation is “Ladies Only” and as
Mrs. Sunedha Sahani says, “We girls really let
down our hair and play games which may amaze
our grandchildren.” “It is a great stress buster,
and the 2 hours spent away from house work
really refreshes us,” adds Mrs Santosh Arora with
a shy smile. Every month end, the entire group
of members meet for an evening of merriment,
birthday cakes for all members whose birthdays
fall during that month and quizzes with interesting
gifts for contestants.
This is one group of elders who have truly
shown what Active Ageing is all about! What is
even more heartwarming is that the Society has
since added more Physiotherapy machines out of
their own funds. And this group came together to
donate a substantial amount towards the HelpAge
Uttarakhand Relief efforts. Says Suresh Palta,
“HelpAge India has helped us come together and
changed the quality of our retirement years. Now
it is our turn to support HelpAge.” We salute
these Active Ageing practioneers.
A unique School for elders
A novel idea was started in March of 2007, by
a man who felt that senior citizens needed a
place to call their own. Late Pramod Navalkar
of Mumbai, who held many high posts in his
lifetime, did something few would dream of, he
helped develop a park catering specifically for
senior citizens. This was followed by a unique
school for them called the Nana- Nani School
set at Mumbai’s Charni Road. It is run today
under the mentorship of his wife Mrs. Vandana
Navalkar.
“I come here because of Mr. Navalekar. This was
his dream. I’ve been here since its beginning. He
had an idea and started this school. I was whiling
away time before this. I forget all my suffering
when I come here.” says 88 year old Shivaji V
Kamat. His wife passed away 8 years ago and
since then its has been tough; he finds solace
here along with likeminded friends and has lots
of things to do.
It is a school like any other school with classes,
just the students are more eager and different this
time. Their mean age would be 65 on an average,
but their excitement palpable! Everyday senior
citizens here get together and have classes from
4:30 pm to 7 pm. It has a well stocked library and
here the students become the teachers as well,
with the senior citizens utilizing skills they’ve
honed over the years, teaching Yoga, music,
religious texts, dance, drama and many more to
their classmates.
Says Vijay Mukadam, 71 years, “I come here
because I like the group, the whole idea of older
people coming together to learn new things like
music, exercise, bhajans, religious texts etc. This
is a good way to spend time constructively.” She
encourages other senior citizens of neighborhood
to join them as she wants them to learn new
things like she does.

Elderly demand Universal Pension
There are many elderly who are low wage
workers, who work hard throughout their lives,
yet in their silver years who, in the absence of
any social security, do not receive pension due
for the elderly. This injustice was sought to be
highlighted when HelpAge India along with other
partnering agencies staged a 5 day dharna (rally)
at Jantar Mantar, New Delhi in May this year.
HelpAge joined hands with Pension Parishad
(a consortium of NGOs and trade unions) to
demand Universal Pension for the elderly on the
occasion. About 5000 elderly from nearly 20 states
participated in the event. Eminent social activists
like Baba Adav, Ms. Aruna Roy and Nikhil Dey
and other leaders of Pension Parishad pushed
forth the urgency of the issue with Shri Jairam
Ramesh, Union Minister for Rural Development,
Govt. of India.

Fighting social crime - Elder Abuse
On the eve of World Elder Abuse Awareness
Day (WEEAD), HelpAge India released a
nationwide report on “Elder Abuse in India
(2012)”. Launched at the national capital by
Mr. Tejinder Khanna, then Lieutenant Governor
of Delhi, it showcased the grave situation of the
elderly in our society. Research studies conducted
by HelpAge over the past few years reveal a
disturbing trend that the maximum cases of Elder
Abuse stem from within the family across all socioeconomic sections. This year’s research spanned
20 cities where HelpAge India is operating its
Elder Helplines: Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Kolkata,
Bangalore, Hyderabad, Guwahati, Patna,
Chandigarh, Panaji, Ahmedabad, Shimla, Jammu,
Kochi, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Puducherry, Jaipur,
Chennai, Dehradun, & Lucknow.
Elderly rally against Abuse in Shamshabad (AP)
“Standing at Mumbai’s Dadar railway platform
supporting HelpAge’s initiative in the fight
against Elder Abuse is my way of showing how
strongly I feel about this. It’s a shame that our
elders have to suffer at the hands of their own
children.”
– says 24 year old, Shilpa Srivastava.
31% of older persons reported facing abuse.
The primary abuser was the son followed by
the daughter-in-law. More than 80% of those
abused did not report the matter to uphold
family honor.
Various events such as signature campaigns, press
meets, cultural events, inter-generational activities
etc. were held across India to mark the day.
Children and young adults showed their support
by joining HelpAge’s social media campaign on
Facebook, joining marches and rallying at various
locations, raising awareness about the issue.

Meeting critical challenges of Urban
Elderly
Urban living poses diverse and increasing
challenges for the elderly. With a view to seeking
answers to some of the multiple issues, HelpAge
organised a Seminar where social scientists
presented their viewpoints while entrepreneurs
offered innovative services and products to
enable elderly to lead safe and secure lives. This
was seen as a precursor to an all-round response
required of the State, the civil society, the notfor-profit and the industry. Elderly from various
Senior Citizens’ Associations participated actively
in the event.
HelpAge is actively working with more than
900 Senior Citizens’ Associations urging elders
to form activity groups to persue common
hobbies and learn new skills. The attempt is to
ensure elders remain physically agile and mentally
engaged so they can lead healthy and active lives.

Starting with the young – a Kolkata
state office Advocacy initiative
The SAVE (Student Action for Value Education)
Programme expanded its reach to more than
11 lakh students across India. The SAVE team
in Kolkata worked with over 60,000 students
and was also very active on the policy advocacy
front.
Due to constant advocacy with the “Expert
Committee on School Syllabus” a chapter on
“Respect to Elders” has been included in the
Environmental Studies text book for class V
students of Government schools. The book
has been published by the School Education
Department, Government of West Bengal and
the Council for Primary Education. Similar
attempts are being made in the other states as
well.
The chapter in the form of a story aims to
inculcate the values of love and respect for
elders in the family and society. Two specific days
earmarked in the HelpAge India calendar, 15th
June for ending Elder Abuse and 1st October,
the International Day of Older Persons have
been specifically mentioned and the chapter
encourages children to observe these two days
by spending time with their grandparents.

Stage for Age - the forum to
entertain and educate
The Paul Peabody Concert was organised by
HelpAge India along with partner agency
Help Me See on 5th August 2013
There are 12 million blind in India and 62.6 %
are blind due to cataract, a large number of them
elderly. HelpAge supports Cataract surgeries
for disadvantaged elders. This year too around
30,000 surgeries were sponsored.
Internationally acclaimed Violinist Paul Peabody
came all the way from New York to perform Live
in Concert for charities HelpAge India & Help
Me See’s joint initiative of Helping the Blind See.
Through this concert HelpAge India & Help Me
See hoped to raise awareness and funds to help
the blind see. Kick starting the evening was a silent
mime act by group ‘Jagran’ spreading awareness
on blindness and its simple yet affordable cure
which can change the life of a person.
Paul as a violinist has a rich body of work behind
him spanning three decades. He has played for
Michael Jackson, Madonna as well as for over 90
films including the soundtrack album for Disney

flicks doing Jugalbandi with him were our very
own Indian artists with Raghuraman on the Flute,
Sunil Kant Saxena on Sitar, Nawab Ali at the Tabla
and Kannan with Ghatam. Paul also rocked with
the young students of Ryan International School,
Rohini, Delhi.
“I’m very happy to be here today and perform to support
this initiative of helping the blind see. The cause is very
close to my heart. I want to pass on the message to all the
people, that a small contribution from them can make a
huge difference in the life of someone who can’t see just
because he or she can’t afford its cure. Restoring sight is
like giving someone a whole new world of colour, life and
most of all hope,” says artist Paul Peabody.
Badshah Rangeela
“My association with HelpAge has been a long one, since
2004, for me theatre is a medium not just to promote
talent but also to raise awareness about relevant issues.
Through this play I hope to re-kindle the time our elders
grew up hearing stories about history and mythology”,
says Sarita Vohra, renowned theatre veteran.
In March 2013, Living Room Theatre and
HelpAge India, under its aegis Stage for
Age, staged multiple shows of “Badshah
Rangeela”. A 120 minute historical, extravaganza,
it celebrated 100 years of Dilli complete with
dance, music and poetry.
Written and directed by theatre veteran Sarita
Vohra, Badshah Rangeela was a reflection of life
for many of Delhi’s senior citizens who grew up
hearing stories of a Dilli dating back to the time
of Emperor Mohammed Shah Rangeela. Based
on the life and times of the Mughal Emperor,
a time when Nadir Shah invaded India and
plundered Delhi, the play enthralled the audience
transporting them to another time and space.
Spreading the message of Active Ageing the age
of the cast varied from 70 years to a 10 year old
child. Veteran Actor, Swadesh Mahan is 70 plus
and is a living example that “Age is no barrier to
living ones dream”.
