Fraud – An intentional deception or misrepresentation
made by an individual knowing it to be false, resulting in
unauthorized benefit(s) for himself or another person.
Abuse – Practice that is inconsistent with accepted, sound
medical or fiscal standards. The practice may directly or
indirectly result in unnecessary costs to the Medicare
program, improper payments for services that fail to meet
professionally recognized standards of care, or services
that are medically unnecessary.
