Understanding Flash
 There are two types of Flash files
 SWF Files
–Pronounced SWIFF
–Shockwave Format
–Vector-based
 Flash Video
–.flv
–.f4v
Shyam’s ToolBox
 Shyam's ToolBox is an add-in set of procedures
 For Microsoft PowerPoint 2003/XP/2000
 Includes an option to insert SWF movies
 Costs $50

 The Insert > Flash Movie procedure is extensive
FlashBack Add-in
 Add-in to rewind Flash movies in PowerPoint
 Download file http://skp.mvps.org/flashback.htm
 Open the Presentation containing Flash Movies
 Select Tools > FlashBack > Initialize FlashBack
 Select the appropriate options
 Launch the show
 FlashBack will automatically rewind all Flash
movies during the slide show
Swiff Point Player Add-in
 Free add-in from GlobFX Technologies
 For Microsoft PowerPoint 2003/XP/2000

 Does not use Macromedia’s Shockwave Flash

 Uses its own proprietary Flash Player available as a free download from their site
Adding a
SWF File
Enable Flash Technology
 There are several preferences you must modify
 You may need to adjust your security settings to
allow Active X to run
 View the PowerPoint help file and enter the text
“Enable ActiveX”
 Make sure that the Shockwave Flash plug-in has
been loaded on your system
 Also install the latest version of Flash Player on
your system
Enable the Developer’s Tab
 The Developer’s tab contains several advanced
elements that let you customize a presentation
 Most of these are for developers, those who use
PowerPoint as a programming environment
 Click the Microsoft Office Button, and then click
PowerPoint Options button
 Next, click Popular, and then under Top options
for working with PowerPoint, select the Show
Developer tab in the Ribbon check box
 To apply the change, click OK
Enable the Developer’s Tab
 On the Developer tab, go to the Controls group
 Click More Controls
 In the new dialog box, select Shockwave Flash
Object from the list of controls and click OK
 Draw on the slide to insert the control
 A white box with an X should now be on the slide
Locate the Flash Movie
 Unfortunately, the Flash control does not have a
browse function to locate the movie
 You have to know the actual file path
–This is a long string of text such as C:\Documents
and Settings\RHED Pixel\Desktop\Chapter 4
\Sources\Video\Flash_Title.swf
–Be sure to figure out the location of your file
–If you right-click on a file, you can view its properties
–One of those properties is location; you can
highlight it and copy the text to your clipboard
–This contains the full path (minus the filename)
Modify the Control Container
 Right-click the Shockwave Flash Object on the
slide and choose Properties
 On the Alphabetic tab, click the Movie property
 In the value column (the blank cell next to
Movie), type or paste the full drive path,
including the file name or URL to the Flash file
that you want to play
 You can set options such as looping and autoplay by modifying settings in the Properties
dialog box

 Locate a YouTube URL like this:

 Modify the web link to something like this:
http://www.youtube.com/v/RysNrUP5MqA
to create a direct link to just the media file
 Click once to start the clip
 Click the screen again to visit the YouTube page
