1: Engine Tuning Guide:
This is meant as a guide only and is a compromise between price and performance. It is not the most
expensive route, it’s not the cheapest route, it is not the best route. It’s just the route we would follow if
it was our car, taking into consideration performance, price and reliability. The exact route you follow
depends on the use of the car and your budget, a drift car will be far more response dependant than a
drag car whilst a track car will fall in between the two.
We would never recommend anyone go straight through all the stages with no attention paid to the rest
of the car. Increases in engine performance should always be balanced against brake, suspension and
chassis upgrades. We haven’t tried to allocate brake, suspension or chassis tuning against engine tuning
as it is too much of a grey area and is very dependant upon the owners driving abilities, style, the use of
the car etc.

2. Air Filter:
The original S13 air box is of a restrictive design which hinders the engines ability to breathe freely,
especially once you start tuning the engine and increasing its air consumption. There are a couple of
ways to free up the intake system. One is to modify the original air box by adapting the restrictive
intake tract and drilling holes in its base. This can be combined with an aftermarket panel filter for
maximum effectiveness. The alternate option is to ditch the original air box completely and go for a
cone filter. The Apex’i is a very popular choice because tests have proven the Apex’i filters
effectiveness in terms of filtration. We have developed our own fitting kits to run with the Apex’i filter
head to reduce the price of the kit.

3. Exhaust:
The later S13s came with a catalytic converter but this isn’t needed for the mot regardless of the cars
year because the DOT emissions catalogue hasn’t got any test requirements for a cat equipped S13. As
a result all the cars are tested as non-cat vehicles and with the non-cat emission levels.
Which exhaust you go for depends on how deep your pockets are, what tailpipe design you prefer and
how loud you want the exhaust to be. There are two full (turbo elbow back), excellent value for money,
no nonsense exhaust systems that spring to the fore. The first is the Mongoose system with either 4x6”
oval or 5” round tailpipe. The second is Apex Performances own full system with slash cut 4.5”
tailpipe. Both are 3” and stainless steel and the Apex system comes with a highly polished finish. The
Apex system is available with either a straight through front pipe or a front pipe with built in silencer for
those wanting a slightly quieter option.
If you want a Jap branded system then we can supply a huge range of exhausts from the likes of HKS,
5Zigen, Trust, GP Sports, Fujitsubo, Buddy Club etc but the most common systems that people go for
are the Blitz Nur Spec R and the Apex'i GT Spec. All Jap systems are sold as cat back so you will need
a front pipe to go with it. The Apex Performance front pipes will mate up to any cat back system, are
stainless steel, 3” and are available with or without silencer.
We run one of our systems on our S13 which is currently producing just under 500bhp at the flywheel.

4. Blow off valves:
The most popular blow off valves that we sell are the Bailey Evo and SARD R2D2 kits. The SARD
R2D2 is a high quality Japanese valve which is comparable with HKS and Blitz items. The SARD
valve allows preload adjustment so you can set it to vent at high or low boost pressures.
We can also supply a wide range or alternative valves from Greddy, Forge, KSP, Turbo XS, Collins
Engineering etc so if you know what valve you want just give us a shout and we will be able to source it
for you.

5. Boost control:
There are a number of ways to control boost but there are two main types of controllers, mechanical and
electrical. Mechanical controllers are fit and forget items; they are not suitable for frequent adjustment.
You can get mechanical in car adjustable boost controllers but we don’t recommend them because the
long length of pipe work leads to boost spiking, where the boost overshoots the desired boost setting and
then drops back as the car revs out.
The two main types of mechanical boost controller that we offer are the HKS adjustable actuators and
the Apex Performance boost valve. The boost valve should not be confused with a bleed valve, as they
are two completely different products that work in completely different ways. The boost valve holds
more stable boost and wont cause spiking as can often be found with the bleed valves. If your original
actuator is weak then it should be replaced as the boost valve is designed to be used with an actuator in
good working condition.
If you want to be able to set the boost from within the car (to run high low boost etc) or you are wanting
to run high boost levels then you should go for an electronic boost controller. The electronic controllers
also allow you to tweak the boost curve to how you want it so you can have a hard or soft spool up
which will effect the vehicles midrange torque and allows you to alter the power delivery from a gentle
climb to a hard kick.
The two most popular electronic boost controllers sold through Apex are the Greddy Profec B and the
Apex’i AVCR. The Greddy is the easier of the two controllers to fit and use but the AVCR has more
functionality if you are prepared to put in the time and effort to learn to use the unit properly. We can
also supply the full range of controllers available from HKS, Blitz etc.
We run the Greddy Profec B in the Apex S13.

6. Intercoolers and batteries:
If you want to run more than 230bhp then we recommend you change the original intercooler for a
larger aftermarket item. The original intercooler is restrictive and not very efficient. This leads to high
charge air temperatures when the boost is raised. The hotter the air entering the engine the more it
expands which means it contains less oxygen molecules per given volume which causes a reduction in
power. The heat contained within the charge air can also lead to the earlier onset of detonation. The
cooler the air the denser it is leading to a greater quantity of oxygen molecules and hence more power.
A larger intercooler is not only more efficient than the original and so will cool the charge air to a
greater degree but they also flow better meaning less of a pressure drop. This in turn means the turbo
doesn’t have to work as hard and the pre intercooler boost pressure need not be so high. When air is
compressed it heats up so the less boost you run the lower the charge air temperature so a free flowing
intercooler will lower the temperature of the air before it even reaches the cooler in comparison to a
standard intercooler.
We can supply a wide range of intercoolers from HKS, Blitz, Greddy, ARC etc but we also do our own
and at the price you just cant beat the value for money. Our cooler kits come with a huge
600x280x75mm core, full set of stainless steel pipe work, hose clamps, hose connectors, all necessary
hardware and instructions. As with all the Japanese style intercoolers the intercooler outlet pipe runs
through the battery tray so you will need to relocate the battery to the boot or buy a smaller battery. We
sell two types of smaller batteries.

7. Engine fluid cooling:
The original viscous fan set up on the S13 is very effective but power gains and greater control can be
achieved by swapping to an electric fan set up. The fan kits that we supply come complete with
everything needed to install them.
The Koyo alloy radiator is a straight swap for the original and is substantionally larger than the original
item.
The cooling panel helps prevent air from escaping up and over the slam panel and so forces the air
through the radiator.

8. Spark plugs:
Spark plugs are made from different materials with different metals used for the tips. The different
materials have different longevity and conductivity properties. The cheap copper plugs have a relatively
short life span, the long life platinums are very long lasting, the performance platinums are the next step
up followed by long life iridiums and then you have the performance iridiums. The performance iridium
plugs need less voltage than platinum or copper plugs to fire so you don’t get problems with the spark
being blown out under high boost as with the cheaper plugs.
The performance gains available from running performance iridium plugs are evident. On the Denso
site there are numerous dyno proven bhp gains that were achieved after fitting a set of Denso iridium
spark plugs. One race prepped Honda Civic gained 13.5bhp just by swapping from NGK R5671A-8
plugs to Denso IK31 iridiums. We run and recommend the Denso iridiums over the others because they
are cheap in comparison and they do the job well. The only point to note is that the iridium plug tips are
very fine and if you fit a set of any iridium plugs to a car that’s badly set up and detonating then you are
more likely to knock the end off an iridium plug than copper.
When you tune an engine it generates more heat so you need to swap the plugs for colder ones to
prevent the plug overheating and causing detonation or pre-ignition. The colder the plug the shorter the
insulator nose as this allows the plug to dissipate more heat into the cylinder head. The S13 runs grade 6
plugs (Denso IQ20 iridium equivalent) as standard. We recommend running a set of plugs one grade
colder than standard for any S13 that’s either mildly tuned. If you are running up to 300bhp then onestep colder is fine so Denso IQ22s. If you are running over 300bhp then we recommend that you go two
steps colder, i.e. Denso IQ24s.

9. Fuel system:
The standard fuel pump is good for just over 220bhp and the standard 370cc injectors are good for
around 270bhp. If you push the power much past 220bhp on the standard pump then the engines fuel
consumption exceeds the pumps ability for flow and fuel pressure will start to drop off at higher rpm in
the higher gears. This will cause the car to run lean and detonate and is the most common cause of
Nissan 200SX engine failure that we come across. The Walbro fuel pump is capable of running 500bhp.
If you want to run more than 500bhp then you will need to look at a twin pump set up or you can go for
the Bosch 044 that is good for 600+bhp.
550cc injectors can be pushed up to and past 400bhp, 660s up to 500bhp whilst the 1000cc will run well
in excess of 600bhp. If the fuel pressure is raised using an adjustable fuel pressure regulator then all the
above injectors will be capable of supporting more power. The standard injectors are good for around
280bhp but you can squeeze a little more out of them with an adjustable fuel pressure regulator.
We run a Walbro, an FSE adjustable regulator and a set of SARD 1000cc injectors in the Apex S13.
We can also supply pumps and injectors from Nismo, HKS etc.

10. Turbos:
We stock and supply a wide range of Garrett turbos. They are all ball bearing core and brand new.
Unlike the majority of turbo suppliers we don’t insist on getting a turbo back in exchange when a
customer buys one of our ball bearing Garret units. That means you can sell on your existing turbo and
considering a good condition T25 is worth around £150 this makes our turbos even better value for
money.
The GT28R is the entrance level unit and is capable of up to 320bhp. The GT28RS is the next size up
and can run up to 350bhp. Both of these turbos are easy to fit to the S13. They are configured for the
S14 so you have to re-align the core to suit the S13 but this is an easy 5 minute job, you just loosen the
pinch bolts on the back of the compressor and turbine housing and rotate them to the correct position,
i.e. so the core sits in the right position for the oil and water feed and drain pipes and so that the
compressor outlet is in the correct position. You will need an intake flange for the GT28R and GT28RS
at £32.
The larger turbos will need an intake and outlet pipe kit but we can supply what is needed on request.
The GT28R, GT28RS and GT2871R come with actuator and bracket but the GT2540R, 3071 and 3076
don’t so they need to be purchased separately.
We ran a T28 on our S13 with 14psi of boost and 259bhp @ fly. We also ran the GT2540R at 21psi of
boost and 407bhp @ fly and then a GT3071 with 23psi and 460bhp @ fly. Our S13 is currently running
the 3071 with a peak of 32psi and around 500bhp @ fly.
We ran a GT2871R on our drift S14 at 1.7 bar and 393bhp @ fly.

11.Engine Management:
If you aim to increase the power of your S13 then at some point you will need to address the issue of
engine management. The standard ECU has a built in protection system which introduces a fuel cut
when the boost exceeds what the ECU considers to be a safe limit. This limit changes with ambient
temps but if you want to run more than 15psi of boost then you will need to remove the fuel cut.
There are a number of ways of doing this including fitting an HKS fuel cut defencer but for similar
money Apex performance can supply a remapped chip for the ECU. There are two chips available for
two stages of tune but both are mapped to optimise timing and fuelling for the specific stage and both
also remove the fuel cut.

Apex Performance chip:
Apexi SAFC2 fuel computer:
If you want to run more than 280bhp then you will need to fit larger fuel injectors. You cannot just fit
larger injectors, you also need to have some way to control them. The cheapest option is the Apexi
SAFC2 fuel computer. This will allow the fuelling to be mapped correctly but, unlike the chips, this is
not a plug and play solution and you will need to take the car to an experienced engine mapped to get it
set up.
The Apexi SAFC2 only controls fuelling and the next step is the Greddy E Manage or the Greddy E
Manage ultimate. These will control both fuelling and timing but there have been a number of issues
with both of these units with 200s so we generally don’t recommend them. The Apexi SAFC2 and the

Greddy E Manages are piggy back units. They work by altering the signals being fed to and from the
ECU. The next step is to replace the original ECU altogether. The easiest, most user friendly and
cheapest new ECU is the Apexi Power FC. These are a plug and play unit that will control fuelling and
timing and are a very professional and easy product to use. We have run a Power FC on a few of our
cars and are very impressed with them. Apexi don’t make an FC for the s13 with the CA18DE engine
so they have to be modified by a company called AP Engineering which makes them more expensive
than the s14 equivalent.
If you want even more control then you are looking at complete new stand alone management systems
like the Omex and Motec products. This is an expensive, complex and technically advanced route but it
car reap great rewards in the control it offers compared to other management systems.

12. Electronics:
After driving a turbo car hard you should always let it tick over for a while to allow the spinning shaft to
slow down and to allow coolant and oil to circulate round the turbo to help it cool. The harder the car
has been driven the longer it should be left to cool. A turbo timer is a wise idea as it lets you leave the
car running but without leaving the keys in the ignition. Nearly all turbo timers on the market now have
an automatic function where they can use information on how long the car has been driven, how hard it
has been driven etc to self determine the appropriate cool down period.
The harness allows the timer to be plugged in with very few wires needing hard wiring. Typically you
just need to wire in the handbrake signal and the earth wires. The handbrake signal is used as a safety
device so if the handbrake is released then the timer cuts the engine immediately to prevent it being
driven away.

13. Engine and service parts:
We sell and run Silkolene engine oils because they are a very stable PAO ester lubricant meaning they
have excellent resistance to breaking down under heat and stress and provide maximum protection and
longevity.
If you drive your car hard or use it for track days or drifting then you should go for the 10W50. If the
car is a normal daily driver then we recommend the 5W40.
We recommend the Silkolene Syn 5 for the manual gearboxes and standard diffs and the Silkolene Boa
90LS oil for the plated after market diffs. Silkolene Syn 5 and the Boa diff oils are very popular in the
competition markets due to their excellent protective properties.
NOTE: The automatic gearbox does NOT take manual gearbox oil.

14. Engine and gearbox mounts and short shifters:
The original engine and gearbox mounts are made from a soft rubber that gets more pliant as it ages.
This leads to excessive engine and gearbox movement under hard acceleration, braking and cornering.
Due to the high weight of the engine and gearbox this movement has a significant effect on the cars
stability and the vehicle will surge and move as the large weight swings around on the soft mountings.
The Nismo engine and gearbox mounts are a very effective fix and will prevent excessive movement but
without transmitting unacceptable levels of noise and vibration into the cabin. The Cusco mounts are a
hardcore option and although they eliminate virtually all engine movement this is to the expense of
cabin noise and vibration that will increase dramatically. We ran the Nismo engine and gearbox mounts
on the Apex drift car and the Cusco on the Apex S13.
The original gearlever has a long throw and the gear change can be transformed by fitting an aftermarket
short shift kit. The B&M is a very high quality item with a very short, solid and accurate throw. If you
haven’t tried a quick shift before then you will be surprised at just how much difference a short shifter
will make to the gear change feel. The Apex shifter doesn’t have the same ultimate solid feel of the
B&M but it is an excellent upgrade for the price and is far superior to the feel of the original gear
change.

15. Clutch and flywheels:
The LUK clutch is good for mild upgrades and 230bhp (200lb/ft or torque). We have customer running
more power than that with LUKs but they are sold as a clutch for 230bhp or less.
The Apex organic clutch is good for 300bhp (280lb/ft) and has a very light pedal feel with progressive
engagement. The Exedy kit and Nismo cover/AP plate combination have been proven to be capable of
handling 425bhp and 400lb/ft. We have run both the Nismo/AP and the Exedy kit along with a JUN
flywheel in our S13 with well over 400bhp and had no problems with either at that power level.
There are few options for flywheels at the moment but the JUN ones work well. A lightweight flywheel
reduces the mass of the rotating engine assembly that allows the engine to rev more freely and quickly.
If you want a serious clutch then the OS Giken twin plates work very well, we have one in our S13 at
the moment and it handles 500bhp without a hint of slip. They are a complete kit with clutch and
flywheel and are a nice and easy clutch to drive with, especially the sprung plate version.

16. Transmission:
The standard S13 box will handle just over 400bhp if treated very carefully but it’s a bit of a time bomb
at that sort of power level and if the cars driven hard then it’s a case of when it will break rather than if.
There are limited options for uprated gearboxes for the S13. One of the most popular upgrades is to
install an S14 gearbox with OS Giken internals. The 3 and 5 speed kits include higher ratios for first,
second and third gear that makes for a very fast shifting close ratio box that is ideally suited to high
power and large turbo applications. 1st gear is good for nearly 60mph!
We also do an aftermarket lightweight aluminium prop shaft for the S13. The Apex Performance prop
shaft is considerably lighter than the original unit and unlike the original is one piece rather than two. A
UK race engineering company finely balances the aluminium prop shafts.
We run a three speed OS Giken gearbox with uprated OS Giken main shaft and an Apex Performance
aluminium prop shaft on our 500bhp S13.

17. Limited slip differentials:
The early S13 came equipped with an open diff and the later cars came with a viscous lsd. The viscous
LSD is a hit and miss affair and with the age and mileage of many of the S13s being what they are the
majority of the viscous lsds aren’t particularly tight and operate similarly to an open diff allowing the
inside wheel to spin up under hard cornering allowing the car to freewheel until the inside wheels drops
and regains traction.
Huge benefits can be gained by replacing the original aging lsd with an aftermarket plated item. The 1.5
way diff transmits power to both wheels under hard acceleration and so optimises tracking and drive out
of tight corners. This ability can be used to force the back of the car to break traction and makes drifting
much easier and controllable.
The 2 way lsds also distribute the load to both rear wheels under braking as well as acceleration giving
the driver the ability to loosen the back end under deceleration making it ideal for drifting.
We mainly sell Cusco and Kaaz diffs but can also supply Nismo, OS Giken etc. We ran a Cusco MZ 2
way in our drift car and run a Cusco RS 1.5 way in our S13 track car. The Cusco RS locks up more
slowly than the MZ so gives more progressive power distribution making it ideal for fast road and track
use.

18. Braking system:
There are two size diameter brake discs used on the front of an S13, 257mm and 280mm. The earlier
1989-1991 cars tend to have the 257mm and the later 1991-1994 have the 280mm. However there was
some crossover use of the earlier discs so some of the later cars also run the 257mm discs, you need to
measure your discs to be sure you are buying the correct size.
Although we can supply a large range of branded discs (Tarox, Black Diamond, EBC Turbo groove,
Red Dot etc) we tend to stick with the Brembos as they have proven to be a very high quality product at
a very reasonable price. They simply don’t cause any of the issues or problems that are associated with
other brands.
Drilling can weaken the casting and can lead to the discs cracking so we recommend either plain or
grooved although we can supply drilled on request. We recommend ten grooves, increasing the number
offers no benefit to braking performance although we can supply twenty-grooved etc on request.
A common front brake upgrade is to run S14 or 300ZX calipers. These bolt straight on and can be run
in conjunction with the original 280mm discs but this is not recommended as the calipers are designed to
be used with 30mm thick discs and the original S13 items are 22mm thick. We stock plain and grooved
redrilled S14/300ZX discs for this reason.
You will also need a pair of new front brake hoses to run with the 300ZX/S14 calipers. We designed
our own hoses for this purpose and we have them manufactured for us by Goodridge.
We also offer a couple of more serious brake upgrades. The first of these is the Apex 310mm kit. This
kit uses 310mm race rotors, alloy bells, alloy brackets and hardware. We do a more comprehensive kit
that includes the above plus a set of Ferodo DS2500 brake pads, a full set of Goodridge hoses and a
bottle of high spec race fluid. The Apex 310mm kit is designed to be used with the 300ZX/S14 four-pot
callipers. These are not included in the kit but can be supplied at additional cost. The 310mm kit is a
very popular conversion and offers a significant improvement in braking performance over the original
S13 set up.
If you are really serious about your brakes then we also offer two Apex Performance kits based around
the superb AP Racing braking components. One kit uses 355mm AP Racing grooved rotors, the other
uses the 343mm AP Racing rotors which allows the kit to go under 17” wheels. The 355mm kit will
only fit under 18” wheels. Both kits use AP 6 pot calipers, AP Racing grooved race rotors, AP Racing
rotor to bell hardware kit, Ferodo DS2500 brake pads, Goodridge hoses, high spec brake fluid, Apex
alloy bells, Apex alloy brackets and Apex hardware kit.
Rear brake upgrades are limited to replacement discs and pads although you can convert to a 300ZX rear
brake set up using the 300ZX rear twin piston brake calipers. You will also need a pair of 300ZX rear
redrilled discs (we stock in both plain and grooved varieties) and 300ZX pads which we also stock.
Finally you will need a pair of special conversion hoses, we have these made for us by Goodridge.
We run an AP Racing 343mm kit on the front of our S13 with Ferodo DS2500 pads, 300ZX rear
calipers, Brembo rear discs, Redstuff rear pads, 300ZX brake master cylinder, Castrol Response Super
dot 4 brake fluid and a set of our special Goodridge hoses.

19. Springs, dampers, coilovers and alignment:
If you are looking to just lower and stiffen the suspension then a set of springs will do that for you. The
various springs we supply will work well with the original dampers as long as the dampers are in good
working order. Chassis Dynamics and Apex springs are the two most popular kits that we do with a
35mm and 50mm drop respectively. Tein are also highly regarded and give a 45mm front and 35mm
rear drop.
If you are looking for replacement dampers then KYB (Kayaba) offer very high quality gas replacement
units for a reasonable price and if you want damping adjustable replacements then you will not go
wrong with KYB AGX adjustable units. We can supply Konis but they are inserts on the front, the rears
have to be unbolted at the bottom to adjust the damping and they are pricey in comparison to the AGXs
so we tend not to sell them. We can supply Konis if you want them though.
Coilovers are the next step as they offer greater adjustability than the damper sets alone. The Apex
Performance coilovers offer excellent value for money with 32 way damping adjustment, alloy front and
rear top mounts, camber adjustable front top plates, height adjustability through the length of the
coilover unit, corner weight adjustment through the spring platforms and dust boots to protect the
damper seals. We run these on our S13 track car and we ran them on our 2005 drift S14. The Apex
coilovers are available in a range of spring rates to suit fast road, track and drift. We recommend
8kg/mm front springs and 6kg/mm rear for fast road with the occasional track day or for drift when you
will occasionally be running on rough surfaces, 6/4 for a softer road set up and 10/8 for ultimate track or
drift on smooth surfaces.
If you want in car damping adjustability then Tein do the Flex set up with the optional EDFC electronic
damping force controller. We can also supply coilovers from HKS, Cusco, Kei Office, Nismo, Apex’i
etc.
When you lower an S13 more than 30mm at the front and 20mm at the rear you will adversely effect the
cars alignment settings. To optimise the cars handling characteristics you will need to correct for these
changes. At the front you will need to correct the camber using either camber adjustable top mounts (as
fitted to the Apex performance coilover kit) or camber bolts.
Castor can be adjusted using Whiteline castor tie rod bushes (see section 7. Bushes for prices) or
replacement rose jointed and adjustable tie rods.
Rear camber can be corrected through the use of a Whiteline camber correction kit (you will need two
kits if you need to adjust more than 0.75 degrees) or replacement rose jointed and adjustable camber
arms. When you correct the camber you will cause the rear wheels to toe out. If the rear wheels toe out
then the car will be unstable in a straight line and will have a tendency for the back end to step out. This
can be corrected to an extent with the original toe adjustment bolts but if you lower the car more than
40mm at the back then you will need rose jointed and adjustable rear toe arms.
There are numerous replacement arms available from the likes of Cusco, Tein, JIC etc. We also do our
own range of Apex Performance alignment arms, the most common sales being for the Apex
Performance products and then Cusco. We run Apex Performance front tie rod arms, rear camber arms,
rear traction arms and rear toe arms on our S13.

20. Bushes:
The original bushes on the S13 are designed to minimise the level of road and transmission noises that
are transmitted through to the cabin. This is a compromise between the handling and comfort levels of
the vehicle and significant improvements can be made by replacing the soft original rubber bushes for
stiffer items, be they polyurethane, stiffer rubber or rose joints.
The two main weak bushes on the S13 are the rear sub frame and the front tie rod. The rear wheels and
many of the suspension points attach to the sub frame and then the sub frame attaches to the car floor
through four large rubber bushes. These bushes are soft when new and when they wear they allow
excessive movement between the sub frame and shell that causes a vague feeling at the back end of the
car when cornering hard. It also exaggerates the cars tendency to axle tramp, where the wheels spin and
grip quickly causing a banging from the back of the car when launching hard. Replacement sub frame
bushes are available from Powerflex and Nismo but, if the original bushes are still usable, you can
stiffen up the sub frame with a Whiteline lock and align kit or an Apex Performance alloy collar kit.
Our collar kit is more effective than the Whiteline in terms of locking the sub frame into position but
they transmit more transmission noise through to the cabin.
When the front tie rod bushes wear you get excessive movement in the fore and aft plane which allows
the castor to change as you drive along. This can make the car wander in a straight line and will make
the steering feel woolly as you turn into a bend and will force you to make lots of corrections through
the corner itself. Both Nismo and Whiteline do replacement bushes for the front tie rod arms or you can
replace the arms themselves with rose jointed items. We sell our own Apex Performance arms and can
also supply products from JIC, Cusco, Tein etc.
The other prominent weak point are the steering rack bushes which get very soft over time and provide
an element of indirectness to the steering feel. Nismo make replacement steering rack bushes.
The remainder of the bushes are not especially problematic but significant improvements in the cars
steering feel and overall handling can be made by changing some or all of the remaining bushes for
stiffer aftermarket items as by doing so you are removing the amount of flex that has to be taken up each
time you ask the car to change direction so the car becomes far more responsive and easier to place on
the road or track.
Nismo also do replacement lower arms that come complete with Nismo uprated bushes and new ball
joints.

21. Chassis bracing:
The S13 shell benefits from additional bracing to help reduce chassis flex. When the chassis twists and
flexes the suspension geometry changes which leads to less precise steering and handling. It’s the same
effect that soft bushes have on the geometry. Reducing and minimising chassis flex therefore reaps the
same rewards as gained by changing the soft bushes for stiffer ones.
We sell our own range of top suspension braces but also deal with a wide range of other suppliers, the
main two being Cusco and Nismo.
We run Apex Performance front and rear strut braces and rear under brace on our S13 along with a
Cusco front under brace.
Stiffer anti roll bars level the car out considerably under hard cornering and retain suspension geometry
closer to how it is set at a standstill meaning you can run less camber. The Whiteline anti roll bars are
sold as a kit and come complete with new poly mounting bushes, new drop links, new drop link bushes
and the necessary fittings. They’re also adjustable so you can alter the cars over steer and understeer
characteristics to get it how you want it.

22. Roll cages:
Roll cages are available in half or full, the half not having the front legs or top of windscreen bracing.
The Cusco cages are available in cold drawn steel and chrome molybdenum. The chrome molybdenum
is 33% lighter than steel but the steel is stronger. Cusco roll cages are bolt in items with no welding
required. The front legs of the full cages can be specified to run through the dashboard or run round it.
As well as providing the obvious additional crash protection roll cages also introduce significant
additional bracing which aids the cars handling properties.
