It is recommended to prefer flights to Istanbul (Istanbul Ataturk Airport and Sabhia Gokcen airport) and Ankara Esenboğa International Airport for passengers coming first time in Turkey especially from Asian countries to avoid problems at immigration exit. Ataturk Airport Sabiha Gokcen Airport Esenboga Airport Nigde Important Note for Your First Few Hours Before Laving the Airport!! After you exit from the airport, it is suggested to exchange at least $100 USD/ Euros into Turkish Lira (TL) from the money exchangers available within the premises of airport exit in Turkish language money exchanger are known as “Döviz Bürosu”. In case you need to buy a sim card for your cell phone immediately after exiting for contact purposes with Faculty Administration, the outlets of three Turkish Mobile Network Operators (Avea, Turk Telekom and Vodafone) will be available at the exit of these airports. According to an estimate, the cost of a new sim card is around 40-60 TL although the price is variable between cellular companies. 11 How to reach Niğde after reaching Turkey? Niğde province is located in the center of Middle Anatolian Region, having Central Bus Station in Turkish language known as Niğde Belediyesi Sehirlerarasi Otobüs Terminali (majorly preferred) and a Railway Station in Turkish language known as Türkiye Cumhuriyeti Devlet Demiryolları - Niğde İstasyonu (least preferred), which are connecting this historic province with other provinces of Turkey. Currently due to the unavailability of Airport facility in Niğde province, there are two routes available to reach Niğde if you are travelling from Istanbul or Ankara, respectively. 12 1. Travelling to Niğde By Bus Service from Istanbul Istanbul is a big metropolitan city having two international airports and three intercity bus stations. Most of the people in Istanbul you will be interacting can speak English. While purchasing your ticket prefer the airline landing at Ataturk Airport, Istanbul. Because from Ataturk airport it’s easy to reach the main Bus Station of Istanbul, named as Esenler Otagarı (Esenler Bus Station). In case you are interested to travel Niğde by bus from Istanbul (cheapest and easiest but 12 hours’ drive by bus) it is recommended to visit the website given below to purchase your bus ticket for in advance using credit card before leaving your home country in order to avoid any problems about ticket purchasing on the spot. Major credit cards (Visa and Mastercard are accepted). The website is https://www.neredennereye.com/en/ This bus station is located close to the Ataturk Airport. In order to reach Esenler Bus Station, you need to take underground metro train from the exit of Ataturk Airport, Istanbul by purchasing a ticket (price ranging maximum 2-3 TL). Take the metro (M1) toward Aksaray and exit at Esenler Otagarı (Esenler Bus Station) stop. The map route of metro train is given below: Atatürk Havalimanı, DTM İstanbul Fuar Mer kezi, Yenibosna, Ataköy - Şirinevler, Bahçelievler, Bakırköy - İncirli, Zeytinburnu, Merter, Davutpaşa - YTÜ, Terazidere, Esenler Otagarı, Kar taltepe - Kocatepe, Sağmalcılar, Maltepe, Bayrampaşa - Ulubatlı, Topkapı - Fatih, Emniyet - Aksaray, Yenikapı After reaching to Esenler Bus Station (Esenler Otagarı) you need to find the ticket booths of bus company that you purchased the online bus ticket. In case you were unable to purchase ticket before, find the booths of the following bus services having routes for Niğde on daily basis. Generally the departure times are around 7-10 pm. For checking the timings of buses please follow these websites: 1. Metro Bus Service (https://www.metroturizm.com.tr/#) 2. Inan Turizim (http://eticket.ipektr.com/firms_36/Default.aspx) 3. Aydoğanlar Turizm (http://eticket.ipektr.com/firms_99/Default.aspx) (Online tickets may also be purchased from the links of bus companies.) 13 1. Travelling to Niğde By Bus Service from Istanbul In case you land at Sabhia Gokcen airport, it’s better to take flight for Kayseri, Adana or Nevsehir airports. These three cities are near to Niğde. Because, from Sabhia Gokcen airport, it will take at least three hours to reach Esenler Otagarı (Esenler Bus Station), and you need to change different buses within Istanbul. Its not a good idea to go to Esenler Otagarı (Esenler Bus Station) from Sabhia Gokcen airport if you don’t have plenty of time, because Istanbul is a metropolitan city, where a heavy and prolong traffic jam is in routine. In the next section, we will discuss how you can purchase air ticket for Kayseri, Adana and Nevsehir in case you want to take a domestic flight from Istanbul Ataturk Airport or Sabhia Gokcen airport. 14 Domestic flights for Kayseri, Adana and Nevsehir airport from Istanbul (Istanbul Ataturk airport and Sabhia Gokcen airport) These are three nearest airports around the province of Niğde. Please note on the below given list of international airports, there are some direct flights from Europe, but no flights from Asia continent. So, the students coming from Asian countries must adopt the said route of Istanbul and Ankara to avoid problems at immigration exit. Nevsehir Kapadokya Airport (Nevsehir Kapadokya Havalimani), Nevsehir (1-hour drive by bus to Niğde). Erkilet International Airport (Kayseri Uluslararası Havalimanı), Kayseri (2.5 hours by bus to Niğde). Şakirpaşa International Airport (Şakirpaşa Uluslararasi Havalimani), Adana (2.5 hours by bus to Niğde) For purchasing advance online domestic air tickets from Istanbul (Istanbul Ataturk Airport and Sabiha Gokcen Airport) towards Kayseri, Adana or Nevsehir following websites can be useful. On-spot tickets can also be purchased from the outlets of various airlines companies offices, but on-spot purchase prices could be higher. http://www.turkishairlines.com/ (Turkish Airline) www.flypgs.com (Cheapest airline within Turkey and EU) www.skyscanner.com.tr (Cheap air ticket finding search engine) www.neredennereye.com (Cheap air ticket finding search engine) 15 Domestic flights for Kayseri, Adana and Nevsehir airport from Istanbul (Istanbul Ataturk airport and Sabhia Gokcen airport) After reaching in one of these cities (Kayseri, Adana or Nevsehir), you need to take the airport service bus “HAVAS”. It’s an airport bus service (ticket purchase is needed) that takes passengers to the central bus station (Merkezi Otogar Istasiyonu) in that specific city. The staff members of this bus service are capable to speak English. So, hopefully there will be no problems in communication if you need anything. There are specific timings for HAVAS bus services from airports. You can check the leaving times at http://www.havas.net/Pages/Intro.aspx. In case you are getting late for your bus towards Nigde, you can even take a taxi from airports to the central bus stations (Merkezi Otogar Istasiyonu) of the city you are interested to take flight from Istanbul. HAVAS bus service costs around 10-15 TL while taxi ride may cost up to 100 TL. You need to take a bus to Nigde from the central bus station of the city you will land. You can buy tickets for Nigde from the central bus station. But it is recommended to arrange all your bus journey in advance to avoid any inconvenience and long waiting times because the landing time of the airlines could be different from the bus timing toward Nigde. You can purchase your online confirmed bus tickets (using a credit card) in advance through the following websites www.obilet.com (Cheap bus ticket finding search engine within Turkey) www.neredennereye.com (Cheap air/bus ticket finding search engine within Turkey) After reaching Central Bus Station of Nigde (Nigde Beldiyesi Şehirlerarası Otobüs Terminali), it will be better to take a taxi to reach the Main Campus (Ana Yerleşke) of Omer Halisdemir University. Standard taxi travelling charges in Niğde is 3.25 TL/km. It’s better to negotiate the travelling charges with taxi driver before travelling. According to an estimate if you will travel on standard charges (day time), the travelling charges must not exceed more than 25 TL to reach the campus. 16 2. Travelling from Ankara towards Niğde Ankara is the capital city of Turkey. If you are planning to take flight for Esenboğa International Airport, Ankara, it will be a good and economical way to travel Niğde by bus from Ankara (5 hours’ drive). At the airport exit you need to ride the ‘‘BelKoAir’’. Similar to HAVAŞ airport bus service, this paid airport bus service (10-15 TL) will take you to the central bus station. The leaving times can be reached at http://www.belkoair.com/ en. In Turkish the central bus station of Ankara is known as ‘‘Ankara Merkezi Otobüs Terminali”, or in short “AŞTİ’’. Travel times between Esenboğa Airport and AŞTİ may take up to 1.5 hours depending on the traffic. For purchasing online confirmed bus tickets using a credit card in advance, following websites can be useful www.obilet.com, www.neredennereye.com Metro Bus Service (https://www.metroturizm.com.tr/#) Inan Turizim (http://eticket.ipektr.com/firms_36/Default.aspx) Aydoğanlar Turizm (http://eticket.ipektr.com/firms_99/Default.aspx) After you reach Niğde follow the above guidelines already discussed to reach campus of Niğde University. 17 Necessary Registrations For the registration purpose, graduate students have to visit the Graduate School of Natural And Applied Sciences (Fen Bilimleri Enstitüsü). Note: Important information on registrations can be found at http://www.nigde.edu.tr/oidb/sayfa/uluslararasi-basvuru After university registrations, you need to complete the following registrations and paperwork in a stepwise manner: 1. Social Health Insurance Registration 2. Application for Residence Permit 3. Application for Tax Number 4. Opening a Bank Account 18 Necessary Registrations Social Health Insurance Registration Healthcare in Turkey consists of a mix of public and private health services. Turkey has a universal health care under its Universal Health Insurance (Genel Sağlık Sıgortası) system. Under this system, all residents registered with the Social Security Institution (SGK) can receive medical treatment free of charge in hospitals contracted to the SGK. The following medical treatments are covered by the SGK: Emergencies Work accidents and vocational illnesses Infectious diseases Preventive health services (drug and alcohol abuse) Childbirth Extraordinary events (injuries from war and natural disasters) Fertility treatment for women younger than 39 Cosmetic surgery deemed medically necessary While some SGK-contracted hospitals offer dental care, in most cases, patients must rely on private dental services and are responsible for covering the costs. In addition, patients must partially cover the cost of some prescription drugs and outpatient services. The very next step after getting student registration certificate is to apply for your social health insurance, or in other words Universal Health Insurance (Genel Sağlık Sıgortası). The requirements may subject to change according to the policy declared by the Ministry of Health each year. In fiscal year of 2016, 790.56 TL/annum (or 65.88 TL/month) was declared by the ministry in order to activate your social health insurance. The students are supposed to pay per annum amount of health insurance in advance. See the next page to benefit from social health insurance for free! 19 Important Information about Universal Health Insurance for Foreign National Students After the changes in the laws regarding the coverage of the foreign students on scholarship at our university by the Social Security Insurance, the right to conduct insurance procedures regarding our students has been taken over by Social Security Provincial Directorates and Social Security Centers. Therefore, those who would like to benefit from the Social Security services, as stated in the legal statements on next page, should apply within three months of their registration (the students registering for the first time at the university). Those who do not apply within the given time period CANNOT benefit from the Social Security services ever again. Those who have already registered at the time this article is published will be included in the general health insurance only if they apply within six months of the publication of this article. It is strongly recommended that our students (those who have the right to apply) apply to the Social Security Center ASAP, to prevent any inconveniences as this issue has a time limit. In order to apply for Universal Health Insurance for free of charge, 1. Complete a written application (see the example on page 22), 2. Apply in-person to the Social Security Center: Address: NİĞDE SOSYAL GÜVENLİK İL MÜDÜRLÜĞÜ Selçuk Mah. Deniz Sok No:10 Merkez/NİĞDE E-mail: [email protected] Phone: 0388-232-3545 Note: Social Security Center Personnel may not know English, therefore bring your written application form in Turkish and English. They match you with rentals. They charge a deposit and extra fees for this service. 2. Find rentals advertised directly by the owner or landlord. For this option, you can either walk on the streets to look for rental signs (KİRALIK DAİRE) and contact the owner, or check the rental websites, such as https://www.sahibinden.com/ and http:// www.emlak.net/. Everything will be in Turkish. 3. Get help from your fellow students. On average expect to pay 650 TL/month for 2 + 1 and 750TL/month for 3 + 1 for unfurnished apartments. Add another 200 - 300 TL/month for fully- furnished ones. Utilities (electricity, natural gas, cable, internet etc.) may add up to 200 TL in warm season and 350 TL in cold season. 26 Dining/Shopping On Campus The Main Cafeteria offers a fixed menu at noon to all students at nominal cost. Additionally students can grab a plate or fast-food at Çınar Café on campus. A small shopping center construction will be completed in Fall semester. It is located across Ayhan Şahenk Dormitory. There is a supermarket close to the dormitory. Breakfast and dinner are served in Ayhan Şahenk Dormitory. There is a canteen at the Faculty Building. It provides breakfast, snacks, pastry etc. during the work hours in semesters. It is closed in holidays. Off Campus Niğde City Center is home to a variety of dining options. The Main Street (called Bor Caddesi or Mecburiyet Caddesi) is the place to dine in, meet with friends, have a walk and shop. There are various restaurants and cafes in that area. There is no shopping mall in Niğde since it is a relatively small city and people prefer to shop locally. If you are a fan of big malls, best locations are found in Kayseri, Nevsehir and Adana. Online shopping is common in Turkey. Many brands offer online shopping. 27 Banks/Post Office/Cargo Banks There are branches of many Turkish Banks in the city center, and ATMs of 4 banks are located on campus, close to the Rectorate Building. Banks with ATMs on campus are Ziraat, Halkbank, Garanti and İş Bankası. In order to use your local bank accounts within Turkey, you should contact your local bank before coming to Turkey. The bank working hours are generally between 8:30 - 17:30. All banks offer online banking through their websites and mobile apps. Post Office There are 21 Post Office (PTT) locations in Niğde city center. You can find the nearest at http://enyakinptt.ptt.gov.tr/Enyakinptt/. Turkey is well known for its historical, natural, cultural and gastronomical wonders. Turkey hosts two of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World: the Mausoleum in Halicarnassus and the Temple of Artemis in Ephesus. Turkey's extraordinary ecosystem and habitat diversity has produced considerable species diversity. Anatolia is the homeland of many plants that have been cultivated for food since the advent of agriculture, and the wild ancestors of many plants that now provide staples for humankind still grow in Turkey. The diversity of Turkey's fauna is even greater than that of its flora. The number of animal species in the whole of Europe is around 60,000, while in Turkey there are over 80,000 (over 100,000 counting the subspecies). There are 40 national parks, 189 nature parks, 31 nature preserve areas, 80 wildlife protection areas and 109 nature monuments in Turkey. 29 About Turkey In 2013, 37.8 million foreign visitors arrived in Turkey, which ranked as the 6th most popular tourism destination in the world. Turkey has 13 UNESCO World Heritage Sites and 51 World Heritage Sites in tentative list, including Cappadocia. 30 Weather Due to the geographical conditions of Turkey, we cannot talk about a general overall climate. In Istanbul and around the Sea of Marmara, there is a moderate climate, and the average temperature in winter is 40ºC (39ºF) and in summer 27ºC (80ºF). In western Turkey, the climate is mild Mediterranean with an average winter temperature of 9ºC (48.2ºF) and with an average summer temperature of 29ºC (84.2ºF). Know a Little Turkish Outside of the major cities, not many people speak English in Turkey. But the good news is, Turkish isn’t hard to learn—the letters are similar to the Roman alphabet and words are said as they are spelled. Luckily you may take Turkish lessons on campus for free! 2. Eat Well and in Moderation There is so much good food in Turkey for meat-eaters and vegetarians alike (emphasis on “so much”). The key to food survival in Turkey is to take just a spoonful off each plate. Of course, Turkish meals vary by region, but remember to gauge your appetite and plan ahead so that you can enjoy the culinary adventure. And remember that street food and small portions such as a simit and sweet breads can be purchased for one lira and be just as filling as a five-course meal! 3. Study History To travel through Turkey without knowing the history would be like driving without GPS. One of the oldest regions in the world, Turkey has a rich historical story, and you must understand a few chapters in order to truly appreciate it. 37 Tips Some other tips: 4. Understand the Culture Turkey is often misunderstood by the West as a moderate Muslim state—but in fact, it has always been a secular state with a Muslim population. That means religion and state are separate, and that most cities in Turkey are very liberal and give people a choice on how they decide to practice Islam. Turkish culture keeps a strong focus on pride and honor, so it is important to make sure you know how to conduct yourself in certain situations. These are little things, like dealing with direct comments, accepting a six-course meal from your hosts, and getting used to the fusion of European and Asian influences. Also, be careful when you're talking politics: You should know which issues are sensitive and understand that every person will have a completely different perspective on culture, life, and government. Observe and follow others' lead! 38 Special Thanks...
