Who’s Hungry?
The Stone Turtle Day Lodge kitchen crew has
been hard at work this summer coming up with a bunch
of mouth-watering dishes to serve our hungry skiers
this winter. Our Veggie Chili and Rocky Mountain
Chipotle Veggie sandwiches were huge hits last year,
and you will continue to see them and other vegetarian
specials on the menu (don’t worry, Classic Chili and
Bosco Sticks aren’t going anywhere!).
Our Spanish Paella, a hearty dish of saffron rice,
chicken, shrimp and vegetables cooked over an open
fire, was such a crowd pleaser last year that we’re
bringing it back for multiple weekends. Check the
Events Calendar to find out when.
For those of you who remember the glory days
of Bob’s Bean Bomb, and even for those who don’t,
you are in luck. On select weekends, we will be serving
the legendary Bean Bomb Nachos – a big plate piled
high with heavy tortilla chips, sharp cheddar cheese,
tomatoes, black olives, and of course Bob’s Bean
Bomb. We’d recommend getting your ski in before
embarking on this masterpiece.
New this year, and inspired by Chef Luis
Contreres, is the Wood Fired Flatbread Pizza, another
grill pit specialty. Our kitchen crew will layer pizza
sauce, mozzarella cheese, and your choice of toppings
onto delicious flatbread, and grill it over open flame.
Super fun and very tasty!
And because we think our skiers should be able
to do some of their own bonfire cooking, we’ll also be
offering s’more kits and roasting skewers to use on the
new outdoor fire pit, as well as at Trappers Cabin on
weekends!

XC Technique Evolution (cont. from pg 1)
Last March at our first Eli Brown skate
ski clinic, many seasoned skiers were
introduced to a very new poling
method. Many cross country skiers have
learned the traditional double poling
method, where the skier fully extends
both arms after the pole plant, utilizing
strength primarily from the triceps for
power. The “new school” technique
emphasizes the use of much larger
abdominal and latissimus muscle
groups. The result is a quick abdominal
crunch motion, where almost all the
power is in the super-fast pole plant.
There is essentially no follow through,
and the skier gets a longer rest at the
top. As Eli says, this is a much more
efficient use of a skier’s energy than
spending most of the time on the follow
through, and having almost no rest

also has speed segments that can be set
up to race against other bikers and rates
your performance.
This could be a fun app to use on
the trails at XC Ski Headquarters. We
are planning on setting up speed
segments using Strava, until someone
comes up with a cross-country-ski-
specific app. We plan on doing a hill climb segment so we can name
a king and queen of the mountain, and also a sprint segment, as well

Gladwin Clinics and Cookouts

the Seebeck Family Charitable Fund the Gladwin County Recreation
Area, on Pratt Lake Rd, will have machine groomed XC Ski trails this
winter. To introduce new skiers to the sport, Cross Country Ski
Headquarters will hold a “Learn to Ski Clinic” on site January 11 and
25. Both are on Fridays and will start at 5PM. The cost is $5 per skier
and includes equipment, a lesson and a guided tour. After the skiing

EVO ColdGear
SPORTHILL is famous for their super warm
3SP clothing. The 3SP story hasn't changed much; it
doesn't need to. 3SP remains one of the best cold
weather knits on the market and here's why. Made of
85% polypropylene and 15% spandex, densely woven
3SP is windproof up to 35 mph. It is breathable and
moisture wicking. It is not laminated, so perspiration
does not build up on the inside. The yarn used in the
manufacture of 3SP is the most hydrophobic (water
hating) yarn in the world, including naturals fibers.
3SP also dries very fast, even when soaking wet. It is

Vasa Ski Club takes Biac, Brumbaugh and Michigan Cups By Mike Muha
The Vasa Ski Club crushed the competition to take the 2012 Biac Cup for best junior team, the 2012
Brumbaugh Cup for best senior team, and the overall 2012 Michigan Cup for best combined team. The
Vasa Ski Club finished the season with 26% more points than the second place finisher, the Cross Country
Ski Headquarters, 37,217 to 27,423. Straits Striders was third with 19,277 points in a close contest with
Team NordicSkiRacer and the Grand Rapids Nordic Ski Team.

Cross Country Ski Headquarters Team - Captain Frank’s Review
The 2011-2012 ski season was a tough season to weather, and that's meant literally. Cross country skiers
and winter sports people experienced a very challenging season for pursuing their activities, with one of the
mildest Michigan winters to go on record.
Amazingly, many of the XC trails in northern Michigan were ski-able throughout the season, despite the
mild conditions. On the Mi. Cup racing scene only a few of the races were canceled due to poor snow conditions.
A few of the races like the Frosty Freestyle and Crazy Classic had back-up plans to deal with the lack of snow
and made it happen. On the other extreme was the Black Mountain Classic which experienced a full blown blizzard
the day before and during the race with several feet of snow to deal with. For some great stories ask some of our
XCHQ racers who did the Black Mtn. race for their personal experiences from that memorable race.
Congratulations to all the XCHQ racers who helped the team finish 2nd overall in the Mi.Cup and also
2nd overall for the Brumbaugh Cup. When you consider the number of our active racers and the points we
acquired during the racing season it's quite impressive when compared to all the other Mi.Cup teams !!! Again,
a big Thank-You to all who helped contribute to the effort. Looking forward to seeing you and hopefully some
more new faces this 2012-2013 season.This season looks to be exciting, starting off with an Eli Brown skate
and classic on-snow clinic in December. And some new races for the upcoming season, Lakes of the North (
Mancelona) in December, Forbush Corners (Frederic) in February and Black Mtn. Freestyle (Cheboygan ) in
March. Refer to the Mi.Cup schedule for the official dates of these and other Mi.Cup races.

Michigan Cup: Muffin Race : Erin Lipp and Andrew Bruning top Muffin Race Podium by Mike Muha
After finishing third overall in Saturday's Boyne Mountain Grinder Freestyle, Erin Lipp skied to victory
in Sunday's 20th Annual Muffin Pursuit Race at Cross Country Ski Headquarters. She skied both the fastest
classic and skate legs of the pursuit, winning in 37:00.
Heidi Schwab was second, with the second fastest classic and skate legs, finishing in 38:45. Third was
Hannah Davis, with the fourth fastest classic leg and the third fastest skate leg. Hannah finished in 41:06.
For the guys, it was a fight to the finish. Andrew Bruning finished the classic leg trailing in fourth position,
but was fastest overall in the skate leg, giving him a combined time of 31:22 - only one second ahead of
Ian Durand. Ian was the top classic skier, and was third in the skate leg, but was one second shy of the win
in 31:23.
That's not all! Mark Smith was only 2 seconds behind Ian, with the second fastest classic and skate
legs. This was an exciting race!

Last Winter's Snowfall: The Glass Half Full (continued from pg 2)
and a new ski season is upon us! That one-in-a-hundred years
bad ski season is behind us, and the next one will most likely
be our great grandchildren's problem. For all you dooms-dayers
out there, interestingly, snow fall wasn't a global ski crisis last
year; Europe actually had an amazing ski season. Maybe
Europe's one-in-a-hundred years bad ski season is coming soon,
but we North Americans can be hopeful not to see another

dismal snowfall like last season for the rest of our lives.
As a result of last season's weak snowfall, as early as September this year we've already heard from
countless skiers how geeked they are for their over-due fill of ski days this coming season. Ourselves
included, there is a sense of pent-up demand for the gloriful white stuff! More importantly, there is
widespread confidence that North America will see a more "normal" ski season this winter. So dust off
your ski equipment and get psyched!

Cross Country Ski headquarters has teamed
up with Michigan McDonald’s restaurants to
offer an exciting and very affordable introduction
to the sport of Cross Country Skiing.
The program includes a group lesson, ski
equipment rental, and a XC SKI HQ facilities
pass for the day. The price for this Discover
Michigan Skiing program is $20 for adults and
children 6 years old and older. The lesson covers
basic maneuvering on skis, including classic
technique, turning, controlling speed going
downhill, and getting up from a fall. At the end
of the program, participants receive a $20-off
coupon valid at participating Michigan Ski
Industries Association ski shops.
The Discover Michigan group lesson
usually starts at 10am on Saturdays throughout

Recreation Area, located in Grayling, Michigan. There Bomb, melted sharp cheddar cheese, black olives,

8km Citizens Races (classic and freestyle) for those
new to racing, an 8km Juniors race, plus a 15km and
30km Michigan Cup race. This is a really fun event

A huge hit with our skiers last season, Paella,
a hearty, deliciously savory Spanish rice dish, will
be served from Noon to 3pm this Sunday. After
learning the ropes from Paella chef master Ayo of
Nerja, Spain, Bob and Lynne are excited to share
this traditional dish to hungry skiers at Cross
Country Ski Headquarters. Prepared in a massive
cast iron pan over open flame, this lunch is almost

not have a team but would still like to ski, we will
try to find a team for you.
Registration fee includes refreshments (some
teams bring special refreshments), Pulled Pork
sandwiches served on a sourdough roll, scalloped
potatoes, homes made coleslaw, and fresh baked
chocolate chip and oatmeal raisin cookies for
dessert. Each racer will also receive an official 2013
Michigan Cup Pint Glass!

Feb 24, 2013 – Sunday 9am - 21st Annual Junior
Muffin Pursuit Races – Classic/Freestyle
One of the longest standing Juniors race in
Michigan, the Muffin Race will be held at Cross
Country Ski Headquarters on Sunday, Feb 24th.
The race is a Junior Girls & Boys 8K Pursuit race.
Skiers will classic ski the first half of the race then
ski freestyle the second half of the race.
Registration begins at 9am on Sunday, and
we will shoot for an 10:30am start. This is a
Michigan Cup Junior Race. Medals will be
awarded to the top 3 finishers in the girls and boys
races.
After the 8K Senior Muffin Division Pursuit
race, we will hold three Junior Muffin freestyle
races: Ages 6 years and under, 7 to 9 and 10 to 12.
All racers 12 and under will be awarded a medal!
There is a $10 entry fee for the Senior Racers (13
and older) and it includes a Pulled Pork Lunch.
There is no entry fee for the Junior Muffin Racers.

Manitou Trails. So for those of you who need
to dangle a carrot in front of your ski buddy, you can promise a rest-stop on our longer trails. We've also
been extensively working on all our trails; grading where bumpy, widening where narrow, and trimming
back tree limbs all along the way. And just in case we ever have less than desirable snow, we're mowing
the trails super low so we can get out skiing on a thinner base layer, as well as clearing "snow harvest" fields
along the trails so that our "Snow Doctors" can fill in the bare spots.
When you're inside and shopping, be sure to check out our new ski boot display showing off all the hot
new boots from Salomon, Alpina, Fischer, Rossignol and Atomic. This will be where your next shiny new
toy will be beckoning you! We have also increased our demo and rental equipment capacity with
re-engineered ski racks. Our robust demo fleet will ensure that our customers are able to demo all the skis
that they are interested in buying.
