Welcome Message
From The President
Dear Friends and Supporters
Welcome to the Ninth Annual Legacy of Excellence Awards Celebration! It is always an honor for me to
participate in the selection of the honorees and to do my part to help bring this wonderful event to you.
For me and the A Good Black Man, Inc. (AGBM) Board of Directors, this is a highly anticipated gathering. It is our way of showing how much we love and appreciate African American males. And we look
forward to every moment. The Legacy of Excellence Awards Celebration is a tribute to the many men of
color who continually serve as fathers, husbands, teachers, mentors, counselors, advisors, leaders,
activists, supporters, and positive contributors within the Black community. We have selected six outstanding individuals (from a multitude of potential award recipients) and nominated each on the basis of
their community involvement and commitment.
AGBM is resolved to do everything within its power to support and assist African American young men
by providing them with the resources and the information they need to improve both their personal lives
and their economic outcomes. This fund raising event helps us achieve that end. In addition, we have
developed “Legacy of Excellence” Program Modules which are a combination of classroom activities
and computer technologies is designed to address issues created by the Digital Divide. Finally, we incorporate our web site, www.agoodblackman.com (and www.agoodblackman.org) as a vehicle for
exploring, honoring, uplifting and celebrating African American males.
We invite you to join us by lending your support of this vital initiative. We hope that you will enjoy festivities and be as inspired as we are by the work of the award recipients. Please take a moment to congratulate and personally thank each of them for the positive contributions they’ve made.
As always, we hope that when you leave this event, it will be with a sense of resolve, purpose and commitment not only to AGBM, but to the African American community at-large.
Peace and Blessings,
D. Anne Browne

What AGBM, Inc. is
All About
A
goodblackman.com (AGBM) is an actual web site online at:
www.agoodblackman.com. This web site was conceived, designed, created, launched and maintained by Baltimore web
developer, author and entrepreneur, D. Anne Browne in response to the criticism: “There are no good Black men.” The motivation
behind the construction of this site is to first, silence the critics. Second,
it is to provide a place for Black males to go where they will not be criticized unkindly, persecuted unjustly or judged unfairly. The AGBM family
places a great deal of emphasis on the history of people of African descent. We do this because we recognize how important it is to reeducate ourselves. We believe that we must reconcile ourselves with the
past in order to understand the present and prepare for the future.
AGBM Founder and President
D. Anne Browne
We created www.agoodblackman.org as a companion web site that provides information and updates about our nonprofit organization, A Good
Black Man, Inc. (AGBM, Inc.) With your support, since 2001 we have promoted the countless numbers of
Black males out there who have devoted their lives to building strong communities, families and relationships. Together, we will continue to salute those Black males with positive messages to convey.

Keynote Speaker
Wiley A. Hall, lll
A
s the first full-time African American columnist at the Baltimore Evening Sun and executive editor of the AfroAmerican newspapers, Wiley A. Hall 3rd was for many
years one of the best known and respected newspaper
people in Baltimore. Wiley’s many accomplishments include authorship of the Story Wall narrative at the Kunta Kinte-Alex Haley
Memorial in Annapolis. He was director of communications at Morgan State University and currently works for the State of Maryland.
Wiley was born and raised in a working class neighborhood in
Washington, D.C., a member of a large and close-knit family. His
grandfather Wiley A. Hall Sr. was executive director of the Richmond, Va. Urban League. His father, Wiley A. Hall Jr. was a physicist with the National Bureau of Standards. Both his parents were
former educators who were actively involved in civic and civil rights
causes.
Wiley says his literary role models include Vladimir Nabokov, for
the joyous way he played with the English language; Graham Greene, whose characters wrestled with
the melancholic burdens of finding faith in a seemingly faithless world; and Langston Hughes, whose
writings encompassed the joys and sorrows of being black in America. “I became a journalist in the
1970s at a time when we were very concerned about how the black community was portrayed in the
media and I think each of us entered the field empowered by a tremendous sense of mission of the
need to set the record straight,” Wiley recalls. “My goal was to transform the Baltimore Sun from a daily
paper that historically served the white community into a paper that served all of its readers.”
Wiley won numerous journalism awards during his career, including top recognition from the National
Association of Black Journalists, the National Education Writers Association, the National Association of
Secondary School Principals and the Society of Professional Journalists. His columns are included in
“Thinking Black,” a collection of the nation’s black columnists and in “Urban Rhythms, Urban Blues,” an
anthology of his work while with the Baltimore Evening Sun.
His 1984 investigative series on racial disparities in Maryland’s criminal justice system won the Frederick Douglass Award from the National Association of Black Journalists as well as recognition from Lincoln University’s Unity Awards in Media, the Maryland State Bar Association and the Chesapeake Associated Press.
Wiley also had a significant broadcast career. He hosted the popular news-talk program “First Edition”
on WEAA Radio and was a regular panelist on Maryland Public Television’s “Maryland Newsrap,” and
WJZ-TV’s “Square-off.” He served as board member and first vice president for Associated Black Charities and spoke frequently before church, school and civic organizations.
Wiley is the proud father of two accomplished young men. Wiley 4th is working on his doctorate degree
in chemistry at the University of Delaware. James is a graduate of the Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University and has recently completed his master’s degree in music performance at Northwestern
University that included a two-year internship with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

Special Guest Speaker
Kevin Kamenetz
K
evin Kamenetz has used his experiences as a life-long
County resident to become an effective public servant for Baltimore County. Born in Lochearn, graduating from Campfield
Elementary School, he was admitted to Gilman School, and
received degrees from Johns Hopkins University and the University of
Baltimore School of Law. Throughout his school years, he worked in his
father's drug store in Overlea.
Serving as a Baltimore prosecutor, and after election to the County
Council in 1994, Kevin used his knowledge of the criminal justice system to craft the County's shopping center camera security law, setting a
national standard that reduced crime. He also negotiated a County contract that brought cable TV choice to the county's consumers, while saving taxpayer dollars.
Kevin also drafted laws that promoted more efficient County code enforcement to protect neighborhoods, and started Program Neighbor Space that brings parkland to our
County's older neighborhoods. He put limits on the spread of pawn shops and drug clinics near residential neighborhoods. And he has been a strong supporter of historic and rural preservation, with the Valleys Planning Council awarding him their Preservationist of the Year award in 2010.
He has also been a steady protector of small businesses, and received leadership awards from the
Pikesville Chamber of Commerce and the Liberty Road Business Association. The Baltimore Sun called
him the most "effective Councilman," and his colleagues on the Council selected him as Chairman a record four times!
Kevin has also been a guest lecturer at the Community College of Baltimore County, a past President of
the Safety First Club, and active cheerleader at his children's Rec Council games.
Throughout his career he has been supported by his lovely wife Jill, who are the proud parents of sons
Karson and Dylan, where they reside in Owings Mills.

2010 OUR BETTER HALVES AWARD
Theo Divine
T
heo Devine, a man of God, is a devoted husband to Keisha
Devine and the dad of all dads to their four children. Theo is
a provider and nothing is too good for his wife who he so graciously encouraged to quit her job so she could follow her
dreams of going back to school. "I married my best friend" says Theo,
when asked about his relationship with Keisha.
Theo is a hard worker who is smart enough to put God first because
he knows where his blessings come. Theo is an administrator at Edmonson Westside High School and has been a teacher for 11 years.
He spent the first five years of his teaching career working with students with disabilities. The majority of the students he worked with
were diagnosed as emotionally disturbed. This being a very challenging population to manage, Theo allowed God to use him as he learned
to navigate the school system and give the children that he taught a
mentored, a better shot at life.
An entrepreneur in every sense of the word, Theo opened a hair salon when he was only 19 years old
and learned very quickly how much he didn't know. The salon went "under" due to the inexperience of
young Theo, who took that experience in stride and became even better at everything he would, ultimately, do. Since that time, Theo has started 5 successful businesses, with the love of his wife, who
maintains the home, nurtures the children, and supports her man as he builds a future for his children.
Mr. and Mrs. Devine are the couple to watch. They have formed a partnership in more ways than one,
especially, as it pertains to the raising and education of their children, who are, presently, attending private school.
Theo spends a lot of his time with at-risk African American males who are mentored by him and his associates and believes that there is a star in every one of them just waiting to shine. He is not a quitter
and refuses to give up on the kids he teaches-even when the children don't seem to appreciate the extra effort being made, on their behalf. The group home (where a lot of at-risk kids reside) started by
Theo and appropriately called “Devine Interventions" is where Theo's passion lies. There, he can see
the difference that he makes in so many young lives.
Theo also started the S.H.O.U.T.T. (Students Having Opportunities Using Technology through Thinking) program for special needs students. This program helped students build self-esteem by using the
media to change negative perceptions that had, previously, defined them.
Theo's wife shares in the planning and implementing of strategies that will take their businesses to the
next level and afford them the "quiet" time they need to reflect on where their destiny will lead them.
Theo and his wife prays with and for their children and are determined to raise well-mannered children
who love the Lord and be married to each other for, at least, the next 50 years. Theo says, "We all
have a mission from God. All we have to do is follow orders and we WILL win."

2010 OUR FUTURE AWARD
Jesse Mc Daniel
I
f you were to walk up to Jesse W. McDaniel and say, “How are
you?” You would get an “Excellent, how are you?” with a firm
handshake and a smile. Jesse is a fourteen-year-old
homeschooled student from Baltimore City. He is focused, gifted,
and a kind and considerate young man. He is a giver in addition to being well-mannered and bilingual.
Some of his interests include reading, playing the piano, writing, and
scuba-diving. Public speaking is another gift that God has blessed Jesse
with, as seen in his victory at the 2006 and 2007 Maryland 4-H Public
Speaking competitions.
Another one of his passions is travel, and Jesse was fortunate enough
to journey with his family on a European excursion this past summer.
This educational journey allowed Jesse the opportunity of seeing the world and appreciating the diversity
of its people, while learning about another culture.
Jessie is from a close knit family that prays together. Jesse credits his blessings to his God. He is a worshipper at Huber Memorial Church, where he is an active member of the youth choir and usher board.
Jesse’s determination to become a neurosurgeon, urges this young man to receive, not good, but excellent grades as a freshman in high school and maintain a 3.6 GPA.
Jesse W. McDaniel has completed his second year of Chinese language instruction and is a certified
scuba diver, who has earned several swimming trophies. Representing the Baltimore City 4H division
with great distinction, he has competed and won, 2 years in a row, the title of Maryland State Champion
public speaker.
Working this summer with Johns Hopkins institutions summer jobs program, he is interning in the Bariatric Surgical Department, where he has had the opportunity to scrub in and observe 4 major surgeries.
This is a precursor and a preparatory stage for Jesse, who plans on becoming a neurosurgeon. Jesse
has also been elected as the president of his 10th grade class at Granite Classical Tutorials, which he
attends at an advanced home-school co-optive level. A faithful member of Huber Memorial Church,
Jesse also serves as an usher and participates on the youth choir.
Jessie has and older and a younger sister who are, also home schooled. When asked what one piece of
advice he would give to someone, he said, “Follow God, obey Him, rely on family and friends, and always push yourself a little bit further.”

2010 PASSING THE BATON AWARD
Kevin Carpenter
I
n the fall of 1964 Veronica E. Carpenter, a single and pregnant
mother, possessed a newfound hope when her youngest son,
Kevin, was born and, like any mother, Mrs. Carpenter had high
hope for all of her children. Kevin, however, saw little hope in the
housing projects of Washington, DC where he grew up during the height
of the Nation’s “War on Drugs”—A war that, eventually, claimed several
of his friends and family members as casualties.
Kevin regularly attended public schools and by age 12, his command of
the drug, violence and crime lessons taught by the “streets” has proven
to reap better and faster rewards for him. At one time he worked so earnestly, effectively and successfully for Satan in the seductive and illicit
world of drug-dealing that he was offered a high-ranking position.
So, at a time when most friends were contemplating proms, graduations
or possibly pursuing dreams of college, Kevin had long been in hot pursuit of repeated arrests and convictions, until finally... He was left to
contemplate the reality of having to, ultimately, serve more than 20 years behind bars, as well as how
this catastrophic blow would lay to rest the hopes his mother once held. Yet, even years lost in psychological, mental, physical and spiritual enslavement would pale in comparison to a much greater loss he
would later suffer.
Today, Kevin is a knowledge facilitator, transition coach/mentor and successful entrepreneur and motivational speaker at international and local conferences and workshops. He masterfully introduces audiences to the unfolding of God’s mercy along a callous, unforgiving and lonely journey, and to how God’s
grace and the call to “be ye transformed” ordered the emergence of a profoundly “NEW” human being.
His ability to deliver undeniable, universal and life-empowering truths has Kevin swiftly emerging as a
favorite, sought-after speaker for youth and adult audiences alike.
With a phenomenal talent for offering REAL, RELEVANT and REFRESHING wisdom, Kevin purposefully
and humbly serves God through empowering and elevating the human mind and encouraging their Spirits. “Personal experiences have equipped him with credibility and a critical knowledge of his subject, so
the message is not only honest and soul-stirring, but also highly effective.” ~ Minister Lawson. Now,
Kevin humbly endeavors to help others pursue to recognize and rejoice in the "MADE IT" moments in
their own lives. He is the CEO of "Never Would Have Made It Ministry, LLC," based in Baltimore, Maryland and a founding member of "The Restoration Project", a non-profit grass-roots organization, based in
Washington, DC.

2010 OUR HEROES AWARD
Darrick Claiborne
D
arrick Claiborne was born in Virginia and began creating art at a
very early age. After his family relocated to Charlotte, NC, Claiborne was given a rapid lesson of the differences of rural and city
living. Capturing the essence of his people of the city in his earlier
paintings, Claiborne continued to develop his fascination with urban southern
living. It is his Faith in God, sense of humor, and ability to expose the internal
truth of his painted subjects that have lead to a successful career of museum
and gallery exhibitions, illustrated book covers and an impressive client list of
avid art collectors.
Art has been a part of Darrick’s life for as far back as he can remember. He
recalls times in his Kindergarten school year when he would stay in class
some days during recess to create art. It was his way of recording his dreams
and visually telling the story to those who may not be able to visualize them.
It gives a visual voice to the voiceless who want their stories told and recorded. This has been a process that he’s understood as early as four years
of age. Painting is very spiritual for him. His creative process begins with
prayer and meditation for direction. The most important purpose of his work is
to bring people to the forefront of their feelings. If someone is sad, Darrick wants them to find joy in the colors. If
someone is hurt, he prays that healing begins in the story. In life, we are all single threads of different lengths,
strengths and colors woven together to make this beautiful fabric that we call living.
Darrick’s first exhibit was a group show in Richmond, Virginia at the Black History Museum and Cultural Center of
Virginia. The curator selected paintings created by several internationally known artists and a few local artists to
be a part of the “Collected Sound: The Music of Jazz in Art” exhibition. Darrick’s artwork was later exhibited in
group and solo exhibitions in New York at the JVC Jazz Festival art show, and other galleries in Chicago, Los
Angeles, Fayetteville, NC, Charlotte and Atlanta. It is an unforgettable experience. During the “Collected Sound:
The Music of Jazz in Art” exhibit, the various media outlets reported on the event. The focus of the press release
was on some of the works created by Miles Davis and other internationally known Artists. One of the Richmond
Newspapers covered the exhibition and used a photograph of Darrick’s painting as its front page image. The
beautiful description of his work written by the Reporter was humbling.
Darrick felt honored to be one of the local artists among such an accomplished group to be recognized for his
efforts. Though Darrick has not taught art formally in a class room, he volunteered to speak at a Virginia juvenile
correctional facility to discuss creativity with a group of young men that had formed an art club. The club was allowed as a reward program for the young men that earned the reward for good behavior. The young men shared
their stories with him and showed the art that they created. Darrick and the students discussed ways to develop
an art style and evaluated their artistic motivations. Currently a solo exhibition is being presented at the Black
History Museum and Cultural Center in Virginia. The exhibition is titled, “My Richmond” and runs through May
31, 2010. Seventeen paintings accompanied by written narratives chronicle my stories of living in the City of
Richmond. It’s the expression of being a twenty-something Black male navigating through life with some of Richmond’s social landmarks as the backdrop. The next exhibit will be in late 2011. It is titled “Biblical Proportions” It
is a collection of large scaled paintings depicting Biblical Stories set in modern day time.

2010 KEEPER OF THE FLAME AWARD
Dr. Walter Gill
Walter Gill is a teacher, author, artist, actor and former university professor. He attended public schools in Jefferson City, Missouri and Baltimore, Maryland. He was the first African American to graduate from
prestigious Baltimore City College High School, the country’s third oldest
high school. He attended Morgan State College (now University), and
received his Masters and Ph.D. degrees from Syracuse University.
For 22 years he was a university administrator or professor and included
employment at Bowie State University (MD), Morgan State University
(MD) and the University of Nebraska at Omaha where he was recommended for tenure. Dr. Gill has spent 25 years with children and youth
as an art and social studies teacher, counselor for at-risk youth and delinquent males, director of a boys club and a summer project for innercity African American middle school males, and as a social worker in
foster care.
For the past 11 years Dr. Gill has excelled with hard-to-reach, challenged and delinquent males as documented by several media program segments. He has also taught art classes for the Paul Robeson
(PRAISE) School sponsored by the Urban Leadership Institute. A signature project of Dr. Gill and his students have been the production of calendars comprised of their art work or photographs. The first calendar was produced by the Syracuse Boys Club in order to defray the cost of a pool table the boys had requested. Since then Dr. Gill has helped students produce 14 calendars at a middle school, 2 residential
treatment centers, the NJ State Incentive Program and the PRAISE School.
Many of his classroom techniques are documented: A segment on America-America produced by Idea
Television for Brazilian television; Baltimore Fox 45’s “Cover Story” and Maryland Public Television’s
“Focus on the Arts.” The Sun newspaper also featured a cover story, “Respectful approach to toughest
students,” in January 2000. It has been estimated that Dr. Gill has touched the lives of over 16,000 students, in K-12, undergraduates and in graduate school.
Dr. Gill has presented staff development workshops, published articles in referred journals, and is the author of three books: Teaching in Urban America: A Formula for Change (2008), A Common Sense Guide
to Non-traditional Urban Education (1997) and Issues in African American Education (1991).
As an artist he has been engaged in painting, clothes design, ceramics, and theatre performance which
garnished two best actor awards from the Omaha Community Playhouse and Center Stage theaters in
Omaha, Nebraska. His original art design can be found on the “I Love Baltimore – The Harbor City” tee
shirts.
Walter Gill is also known as Wali Hakeem –wise friend.

of Ambulatory Care Services at Provident Hospital in Baltimore from 19731976. Sought after for his wisdom, leadership, and integrity, Dr. John
served on countless advisory committees (including AGBM), task forces
and other health care governing bodies up until the time of his death.
After 32 years of practicing what he called “sick care,” Dr. John retired from clinical practice to pursue full
time his major purpose in life: “To study, model, motivate, and teach the principles and practices of optimal health.” He was the founder and Chief Consultant of the Positive Perceptions Group, an Optimal
Health Education Network, and enjoyed working as a Consultant, Lecturer, Program Producer and Moderator, Writer, and life long student of Optimal Health, Natural and Universal Laws. He was the proud author of Pyramids of Power: An Ancient African-Centered Approach to Optimal Health, inspired by his journey through Egypt in late 1986. Based upon ancient African history and philosophy, the book is a comprehensive, reader-friendly guide to attaining mental, physical, spiritual, emotional, and socio-economic wellbeing.
The John T. Chissell Optimal Achiever Award was created to to honor, celebrate and preserve the extraordinary life and legacy of one of this nation’s most venerable health advocate and a true Black hero.
Each year, during the AGBM Legacy of Excellence Award Celebration, this award will be presented to an
outstanding African American high school senior, or college student who has demonstrated an appreciation for and understanding of the best possible emotional, intellectual, physical, spiritual and socioeconomic aliveness, which was promoted and practiced by Dr. Chissell. This award will highlight his brilliant
and committed life and the recipient will be asked to advance his legacy through academic excellence,
community service and the promotion of the principles of “Optimal Health.” The John T. Chissell Optimal
