Welcome
Programme Introduction
A very warm welcome to Bristol and to this, the
13th edition of the Encounters Short Film Festival. The selection process is a roller coaster of emotions
stirred up not only by the range of work I go through but by
the knowledge that I simply will not be able to fit everything
in. The breadth of short films this year is inspiring.
Our purpose is to encourage and applaud existing and
emerging talent from wherever it may come and this year
that means we are offering a unique mix of outstanding
shorts from all genres and from every corner of the globe. To say we were spoilt for choice in making the final
selection is an understatement. This year, our
competitions attracted over 1,750 entries - the highest
total in the festival’s history - and came from a record 66
countries. We can only screen a selection but we believe
our choices to be the absolute cream of the crop.
Other elements of the festival are equally international
and varied, with guest screenings from Asia, Europe and
North America; a Film School explaining the international
Art of Producing; many exciting high profile speakers
and guests, and what promises to be a very lively and
engaging look at animation training, and the different
approaches used by leading schools in the UK and
further afield. Some thoughts and observations: The Brazilians are
reinventing surrealism, What gives in Germany? their
shorts are as strong and individual as their feature films.
That Egyptian film was so moving yet funny and economic.
Polish director Anna Kazejak is one of the most talented
filmmakers around. Simon Ellis’ new film is up there with
Michael Haneke’s Hidden. British men are delving deep
into the male psyche, British women are telling tough but
ultimately optimistic stories.
Feel free to contribute your own thoughts during
the festival.
Mark Cosgrove, Creative Director
Many people have worked long and hard to create
Encounters 2007 and my sincere thanks go to all of
the festival team, our volunteers and to everyone who
gives support, particularly the funders, partners and
sponsors. Without them, Encounters simply
couldn’t happen.
So, please, do come down to Bristol’s waterfront, soak
up the atmosphere and energy that surrounds short
film and make the most of your chance to be part of this
exciting celebration!

ANIMATED FEATURE PREVIEW
PERSEPOLIS
Wed 21 Nov 21.00 Watershed Cinema 1
1hr 35 mins £6 Full / £4.50 Concs
Dir: Marjane Satrapi & Vincent Paronnaud 2007
The poignant coming-of-age story of a precocious and
outspoken young Iranian girl that begins during the Islamic
Revolution, based on Iranian author Marjane Satrapi’s
internationally best-selling and award-winning comic book
autobiography, Persepolis and Persepolis 2.
It is through the eyes of precocious and outspoken nine
year old Marjane that we see a people’s hopes dashed as
fundamentalists take power - forcing the veil on women and
imprisoning thousands. Clever and fearless, she outsmarts the
“social guardians” and discovers punk, ABBA and Iron Maiden.
Yet when her uncle is senselessly executed and as bombs
fall around Tehran in the Iran/Iraq war, the daily fear that
permeates life in Iran is palpable.
This film shared the Jury Prize at Cannes this year and has
been put forward as France’s Best Foreign Language film for
the Oscar®s.

BUNNY RONNIE?
Thur 22 Nov 14.30 Watershed Cinema 3
1hr 30mins £8 Full / £6.50 Concs
Two filmmakers with more
in common than you’d think…
both unconventionally trained
directors, each with a huge cult
following around the world, who
continue to push the creative envelope
and creatively explore the short film
form whilst also developing their
signatures as feature directors.
Shane Meadows is regarded as one of the rising stars of British
Cinema, making films unlike anybody else’s, in a manner that is wholly
his own. Self-taught, the Midlands-based wunderkind had already
produced 33 shorts by the age of 25 when he tackled his first feature
TwentyFourSeven. His Midlands movies represent some of the very
best and most humane British films of the past decade, and have been
recognized by festivals including, London, Edinburgh, Cannes and
furthermore through BAFTA, The Directors Guild and British Independent
Film Awards nominations and awards.
Royston Tan has been heralded as one of Asia’s most promising young
filmmakers and its latest cult icon. Known for his distinctive cinematic
style, Royston has received over 41 international and local film awards
for both his feature and short films, notably 15 and Sons. He has been
recognized in Asia with several awards including ASEAN Director of the
Year (2001), Young Artist of the Year (2002) by the National Arts Council in
Singapore and in 2003, Netpac Jury has recognized him as the Asia Most
Promising Talents. In 2004, Royston Tan was cited as one of the ‘Top 20
Asian Heroes’ by Time Magazine.

A remarkable and beautiful depiction
of loneliness and isolation from
past Encounters winner, Singapore’s
Royston Tan.
Left alone in his flat by his traveling mother, Xiao Wu spends his time,
when not at school, warmed by the meager comfort of pot noodles.
When a new tenant moves into the building, nursing heartache, Xiao Wu
tries every which way possible, physical and metaphorical, to connect
with him.
Told entirely from the perspective of the boy, as the title suggests, the
film centers on a moment in the still of the night and Xiao Wu’s attempt
to cling to that moment to escape his drab reality, in a life not yet
fulfilled. Ultimately, this is a poignant story about unrequited friendship,
shared experience and the appreciation of solitude in the urban age.
Royston Tan has been heralded as Singapore’s most promising young
filmmaker and latest cult icon. Known for his distinctive gift for cinematic
narrative, original directorial style and an innate ability to connect
with his audience, he has collected over 40 film awards for his short
films, documentaries and more recently his feature films. In 2002, the
Singapore National Arts Council named Tan ‘Young Artist of the Year’ and
in 2004 he was heralded as one of the “Top 20 Asian Heroes” by Time
Magazine for being bold, brave and remarkable in his field.

Film critic, broadcaster and musician Mark Kermode is the resident
film critic for BBC’s Radio 5 Live, and BBC News 24. He is a regular
reporter on The Culture Show and Newsnight Review and a regular
at Encounters!
Tonight Mark is joined by Richard Eyre for an onstage interview to
discuss influences and aspirations in the art of filmmaking..
Richard Eyre is one of the UK’s leading theatre/television/film
directors. His cv reads like an enviable series of peaks in the UK’s
cultural landscape from landmark theatre to groundbreaking
television, through to a cinema of emotional sophistication and
quality. Richard started in theatre as the associate director of
Edinburgh’s Lyceum theatre. Whilst in Scotland he worked on the
legendary BBC’s Play for Today in the early 1970s. He went onto the
Nottingham Playhouse where he commissioned and directed major
work including the infamous Comedians written by Trevor Griffiths
and featuring an outstanding performance from a young Jonathan
Pryce. He subsequently took over as director of the National
Theatre where his tenure is seen as one of the most exciting.
He worked with a who’s who of theatre – Hare, Stoppard, Brenton,
Hampton, Dench, Day-Lewis, McKlellan. He found time to make
some radical television work – The Ploughman’s Lunch with Ian
McEwan and Tumbledown about the Falklands and served on the
board of the BBC. Over the past decade Eyre has turned his skills
and attention to cinema directing work of the highest quality and
acclaim Iris, Stage Beauty and Notes on Scandal. His work in film
reveals a depth of emotion in his characters and their relationships
and he has drawn award winning performances from such actors as
Judi Dench Cate blanchett, Jim Broadbent and Kate Winslett.
He also had time to exec produce Atonement.

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts is delighted to host
this event at Encounters as part of Bafta in The Regions. BAFTA
supports, develops and promotes the artforms of the moving image,
by identifying and rewarding excellence, inspiring practitioners
and benefiting the public. Bafta in The Regions is a programme of
screenings and events throughout England run in partnership with
the regional screen agencies. Our aim is to engage with a broader
audience from within the film, television and video games industries
and the general public. We achieve this through a programme of
screenings, events, interviews, workshops and masterclasses with
industry luminaries and BAFTA Award winners.
For an event which began as a one-off celebration to mark the
centenary of cinema, Encounters has definitely grown-up. Now in
its 13th year, it’s become a permanent fixture in the International
festival calendar and BAFTA are delighted to support this session
every year. We invite you to celebrate with us.

How does a pebble make waves?
Convinced that his family has
become ‘frogs in a well’, an
elderly grandfather leaves them
an important departing message.
This calm, peaceful film will
spark thoughts about the
wisdom of the aged and the
beauty of death.
A man, dissatisfied with a white
cube for a head, gives it up in the
name of self-improvement, only
to find himself dealing with the
unpleasant consequences.

CANON OF UK SHORT FILM
Thur 22 Nov 20.30 Arnolfini Cinema
Sun 25 Nov 15.00 Arnolfini Cinema
2hrs 16mins
“The idea of a canon
is partly intended to
stimulate a debate,
partly to raise the
profile of the genre
but also to present a
historical context to UK
short film. These ten
films demonstrate the
rich thread of creativity in
short film in this country,
from the groundbreaking
collaboration of music,
poetry and cinema in
Night Mail, through the
influential prototype pop
video of Strawberry Fields
to the playful poignant
urban reworking of
Shakespeare in Jomeo and
Ruliet. They also display the
breadth, variety, energy
and vision which the short
film can contain. For me
this canon represents a
benchmark to which all
filmmakers should aspire.”

STRAWBERRY
FIELDS FOREVER
BERLIN HORSE
Dir: Peter Goldman
UK 1970 8 mins
UK 1967 4 mins 30 secs
Berlin Horse presages much of
the art world’s fascination with
the moving image. Le Grice hand
painted a short strip of archive
footage, looped it and added an
ambient soundtrack courtesy of
Brian Eno. The result is lyrical,
hypnotic and magical.
The Beatles of course changed
the sound of popular music
bringing experimentation into
the studio and onto their albums.
They carried this sensibility into
what is widely seen as the first
pop promo.
Norman McLaren was another
alumni of John Grierson’s
legendary GPO Film Unit and this
film’s mixture of animation and
live action is as innovative today
as when first screened.

For my money John Smith
should be the patron saint of
short film. He works consistently
in the short form, makes films
which are visually outstanding,
socially engaged, creative and
playful. Blight is without doubt a
masterpiece.
Ramsay pulls together social
realism with dreamy lyricism
to forge a cinematic style
which catapulted her onto the
international filmmaking scene.
A reworking of Shakespeare’s
famous lovers to urban modern
London. A beautiful and inspiring
short film.
Where’s The Bunny Ronnie?
(Shane Meadows & Royston Tan

Thu 22 Nov 14.30
(page 23).
Aardman Animations celebrated
award wining style and
techniques are clearly evident
in this early short. Working the
soundtrack of a real person story
– pre Creature Comforts - War
Story brilliantly – with warmth
and wit recreates his
war experience.
A pure example of filmmaking
on the run, no budget but lots of
energy and humour. Hilarious and
infectious this film announced a
major filmmaking talent.
