After arriving we travel inland and visit the villages of Adrano, Regalbuto and Leonforte, all towns taken by Canadians after brief but heavy resistance from Germans of the Hermann Goering Division – we then head back to the Coast where we settle into the resort town of Acireale, near Catania Day 05 May 20, Wed: CATANIA / ACIREALE Morning departure for the South Eastern part of Sicily - visit the memorials of the 1st Canadian Division at Pachino and at Ispica where the Canadians' involvement in Italy started on July 10, 1943 (it took 38 days to conquer Sicily as a preparation to the invasion of Italy) – we also visit Agira Cemetery – then we return to Siracusa for a brief tour of the town before returning to Acireale for dinner Day 06/01 May 21, Thu: CATANIA / ACIREALE Morning tour to Taormina, Sicily's most beautiful town – after time for lunch we drive up to Mt. Etna Volcano; return to Acireale for a free afternoon OR CANADA – ROME (Leave Canada today) Day 07/02 May 22, Fri: CATANIA / ACIREALE – ROME – CASSINO Today we fly back to Rome and from there on to Cassino where we can enjoy the afternoon, visiting a couple of the battlefield sites in the area before dinner OR ARRIVE ROME – CASSINO (After arrival in Rome – transfer to Cassino) 2 Day 08/03 May 23, Sat: CASSINO All day in Cassino with commemoration at Cassino Commonwealth Cemetery, visit to the Cassino Museum and also sites along the Gari and Melfa Rivers – this day offers a chance to meet with the locals of Cassino, at the foot of the famous Montecassino during our special 65th Anniversary Commemorations Day 09/04 May 24, Sun: CASSINO This morning we travel south to Pompei, passing Mt Vesuvius and tour the incredible excavation site – return to Cassino in the afternoon and we take a tour through some of the battlefields of the area, to see remnants of the battle for the Gustav and Hitler Lines Day 10/05 May 25, Mon: CASSINO – ORTONA In the morning we travel up to Montecassino Abbey and you have time to enjoy the spectacular view from above, visit the Abbey or walk to the Polish cemetery – we then travel inland and across the country to the Adriatic – check in and dinner at Ortona Day 11/06 May 26, Tue: ORTONA We start with a visit to Ortona, the Peace Museum and time to explore the streets which saw that horrific house to house fighting – after time for lunch we have a brief ceremony at Moro River War Cemetery and then we pass by Casa Berardi and Sterlin Castle en route back to our hotel Day 12/07 May 27, Wed: ORTONA – RIMINI After breakfast we take off north and we visit Gradara Cemetery before we "climb" up to the mountain Republic of San Marino, the world's oldest Republic! Time for lunch there and then in the afternoon we travel to the nearby Adriatic Coast and check in at Rimini Day 13/08 May 28, Thu: RIMINI Today we visit Montecchio Cemetery and Hill 204 at Tavullia and we will also pay tribute to Canadian soldiers as we visit Corriano Ridge Cemetery – traveling along the San Fortunato Ridge we will get a good glimpse at the hills and ridges of the area as we drive through small villages and agricultural lands en route back to Rimini, the largest seaside resort along the Adriatic Coast Day 14/09 May 29, Fri: RIMINI Today we travel to Cessena Cemetery as well as Ravenna Cemetery – then it is on to Villanova Cemetery – we will get an idea of the geography of the area as we drive through the region which is dominated by rivers (part of the Po River water system) and fields – we will also visit with the local Italian community at Villanova during a special get-together - later in the afternoon we return to Rimini Day 15/10 May 30, Sat: RIMINI - VENICE After breakfast we depart for Venice where we take a watertaxi into the city centre and enjoy the area around Piazza San Marco and the Basilica – afterwards we check into the hotel and have our farewell dinner Day 16/11 May 31, Sun: VENICE – CANADA This morning transfer to the airport for our flight home where we arrive the same day 3 Included: • Air fare Canada - Rome; (Rome – Catania – Rome); Venice - Canada • Private bus and guide throughout • Accommodation in superior tourist class hotels based on double occupancy • Breakfast and dinner every day • Special visits and commemorations, Sightseeing and entrance fees per itinerary • Porterage & local taxes and service charges Not Included: • Lunches • Insurance • Departure taxes • Tips for driver and guide Cost per person: in Can $ based on double occupancy from Vancouver: from Toronto: 16 day $ 3990 $ 3790 11 day $ 3190 $ 2990 Calgary/Edmonton/Saskatoon/Regina/Winnipeg/Halifax $ 4090 / $ 3290 Montreal/ Ottawa $ 3890 / $ 3090 single supplement: $ 630 $ 470 4 WWI sites of Northern France and Belgium & WWII Normandy, Canadian War Memorial Juno Beach 65th Anniversary “D-Day COMMEMORATION” & WWI MEMORIAL TOUR May 28 – June 09, 2009 (13 days) Day 01 May 28, Thu: CANADA – PARIS Departure for Europe Day 02 May 29, Fri: ARRIVE PARIS After arrival in Paris, transfer to hotel – check in and dinner Day 03 May 30, Sat: PARIS Today we enjoy a city tour of the city of lights as well as a short cruise on the Seine River – then there is a bit of time at leisure and for relaxation this afternoon to reflect on a busy but eventful 2 weeks Day 04 May 31, Sun: PARIS –VIMY – IEPER In the morning we visit the marvelous Cathedral with Marc Chagall’s stained glass windows and have a bit of time before we leave the Champagne region and travel to Vimy, to see Canada’s largest War memorial – and we end the day in Ieper, just across the border in Belgium Day 05 June 01, Mon: IEPER Today we visit the battle scarred area of the surroundings of Ieper, site of WWI’s first gas attacks – you cannot turn your head in the Ypres area without seeing a war cemetery somewhere on the horizon, tribute to the horrors these parts saw – we visit Hill 62 Monument, Tyne Cot Cemetery (with 45,000 graves) as well as the German cemetery at Langemark with its 44,000 graves, St. Julian Canadian Monument with Vancouver Corner and John McCrae’s grave round off our visits before returning to Ypres where we participate at the daily Last Post Ceremony at the Menin Gate Day 06 June 02, Tue: IEPER – BEAUMONT-HAMEL – DIEPPE We return to France and stop at Beaumont Hamel for a visit of the Canadian Memorial Park – then we continue to Dieppe where we arrive later in the afternoon – check in and dinner Day 07 June 03, Wed: DIEPPE Today we take a close look at the town and its surrounding areas that hold so many sad memories for Canadians – we visit the cemetery, Pourville (South Saskatchewan Regiment ) and Puys (Royal Regiment of Canada) – we also have time to enjoy the town of Dieppe in the afternoon Day 08 June 04, Thu: DIEPPE – HONFLEUR – CAEN We head south and stop in Honfleur, the picturesque harbor which attracted famous painters like Cézanne and Renoir– after time for lunch there we continue to Normandy, stopping en route at Pegasus Bridge Memorial 5 Day 09 June 05, Fri: CAEN/NORMANDY We start the day with a drive to Verrieres Ridge before our ceremony at Cintheaux/Bretteville sur Mer Cemetery – driving down the Falaise Gap we head to the town of William the Conqueror (Falaise) – there is time for lunch there before returning via Trun and St. Lambert (Major Currie, VC) to the Caen area and we visit Ardenne Abbey before returning to our hotel Day 10 June 06, Sat: CAEN/NORMANDY Drive to Bayeux and then visit to Arromanches and the Landing Beaches where one can still see parts of the Mulberry Harbor – there will be time for lunch in scenic Courseulles – the above program will be arranged according to the official ceremonies which we will participate in - afterwards we visit the beaches at Bernieres and St. Aubin Day 11 June 07, Sun: CAEN/NORMANDY This morning we visit the impressive Caen Peace Memorial, the greatest museum in Normandy and then there is time for lunch in Caen itself before we take a drive through the surrounding areas with Audrieu, Putot and the Carpiquet Airfield and we might head out to Omaha Beach as well - before heading for Beny-Sur Mer/ Reviers Cemetery for a ceremony – then we return to the hotel Day 12 June 08, Mon: CAEN/NORMANDY – PARIS This morning we still spend in Normandy and visit the Canadian Juno beach Memorial – we leave for Paris after lunch – there check in and dinner Day 13 June 09, Tue: PARIS – CANADA Transfer to the airport for our flight home to Canada IMPORTANT: THE PROGRAM FOR THE TIME IN NORMANDY WILL BE ADJUSTED TO ALLOW FOR PARTICIPATION IN A FEW OF THE OFFICIAL CEREMONIES COMMEMORATING THE 65TH ANNIVERSARY OF D-DAY. – we take a ferry trip on the Mersey and learn about the music history of the town, birth place of the incomparable Beatles – in the evening, Chester’s Pubs await us Day 10 Oct 06, Tue: CHESTER – YORKSHIRE/LAKE DISTRICT – GLASGOW Sit back as we head north and stop at Lake Windermeere, pass through scenic villages and continue leisurely north to Scotland, crossing the famous Hadrian’s Wall, northern frontier of the Roman Empire almost 2000 years ago (the construction of the wall started probably in 122 AD) – we end the day in Glasgow Day 11 Oct 07, Wed: GLASGOW – LOCH LOMOND – OBAN – FORT WILLIAM A morning tour gets us acquainted with Glasgow before traveling north, stopping at Loch Lomond for lunch on your own – then enjoy great scenery on the drive to Oban and then alongside some great firths and lochs north and we settle into Fort William, at the foot of Britain’s highest point: Ben Nevis Day 12 Oct 08, Thu: FORT WILLIAM – ISLE OF SKYE – INVERNESS Today’s excursion is one of the highlights on any trip to Scotland as we visit the Isle of Skye, after crossing the Sound of Sleat we’ll visit the gardens of the Clan Donald Centre and have time to enjoy the rugged seashore – then we are off back to the mainland and past scenic lochs , including famous Loch Ness, we drive to Inverness Day 13 Oct 09, Fri: INVERNESS Time to enjoy the town, take it a little easier – but we also visit Culloden Battlefield (of Bonnie Prince Charlie fame) in the outskirts of town and we also enjoy a tour of a real Whiskey distillery with the necessary tasting of course … a time to enjoy the atmosphere of the north 8 Day 14 Oct 10, Sat: INVERNESS – ABERDEEN – ST.
