Regional Code
DVD players and DVD discs have Regional Code classifications that determine their market area and
compatibility. Discs must have matching codes with players to ensure compatibility in playback.
CD-R/RW and DVD-R/RW Playback: Discs may not be played back for the following reason(s): recording
characteristics of recorders; characteristics of discs; scratches and dust on discs; dust and condensation
on pickup lenses.
CD-R/RW Playback: CD-R/RW-for-audio discs recorded in CD Audio Format, Video CD, WMA/MP3 file, or
JPEG file can be played back.
DVD-R/RW Playback: DVD-R/RW-for-video discs recorded in Video Mode or VR Mode (DVD-RW only) can
be played back. Unfinalized discs, however, cannot.
CD-R/RW and DVD-R/RW software disc boxes also provide additional information on compatibility.
Most Pioneer DVD products, including DVD players/recorders for home use, play the DVD-content side of
most DualDiscs. Please use a Pioneer DVD Audio player to play DVD-Audio content on DualDisc. Please note
that insertion or ejection of a DualDisc into/from Pioneer's DVD products is likely to cause scratches to the
disc surface. Scratched discs may not play in DVD products. A DualDisc may get stuck in and its removal may
be impossible with some Pioneer products. For slot-in type home 3, 5 or 300 multi DVD changer systems, there
is a possibility of mechanical jam. The non-DVD side of a DualDisc is not compliant with the Compact Disc
Digital Audio Specification. Accordingly, the non-DVD side of a DualDisc may not play in Pioneer products.

Pioneer Video Converter up-scales analogue signals to 1080i/720p for
output via HDMI terminals. These A/V receivers feature Faroudja's DCDi®
video processing chip. This technology eliminates the jagged edges
which appear during i/p conversion, and offer a smooth and natural
picture. The Digital Video Converter also enables up/down conversion of
video signals. You can choose video output according to the input
terminals of your display. The picture adjustment function lets you adjust
brightness, contrast, and hue of analogue video output.

Power amplification in all channels is performed by originally-designed
Advanced Direct Energy Power Amplifier, featuring minimum energy loss
and minimum interference between circuits. These features combine to
deliver high-quality sound that is close to the original.
The device features "low-impedance, high-current" design, which
minimises the impedance at the final output stage. This effectively
reduces the loss of the signals.
The advanced amplifier also reduces the electric/magnetic
interference from the final output stage which significantly affects the
sound quality. This is made possible by the compact design of the
circuit — with the minimum size of the loop — for the final output stage.
What's more, the device features a temperature compensation
function for bias circuitry. Temperature of the output circuit is subject to
change due to the speaker-driving current. The temperature fluctuations
cause bias point deviation, which lowers the sound quality. The power
amplifier for the new A/V receivers effectively compensates for the
fluctuations to minimise the bias point deviation.

Phase Control — An Innovation for Multi-Channel Sound Compensation
(VSX-AX4ASi-S(-G), VSX-AX2AS-S, VSX-2016AV-S, VSX-1016V-S)
When amplifying multi-channel audio signals, receivers use
Low Pass Filter (LPF) for processing low-frequency signals
for subwoofer output. This extra process causes "phase lag",
or approximately 5 msec delay of low-frequency signals with respect to
those of main channels. The delayed bass affects the quality of mainchannel sound and makes the sound lack synchronisation.
The latest A/V receivers incorporate Pioneer's Phase Control
technologies, which apply a new bass management system to effectively
compensate for the phase lag between subwoofer channel and the main
channels. This significantly improves the multi-channel sound without
any extra operation.

MCACC allows you to duplicate the acoustic environment of
the mixing studio, where recordings and soundtracks are
mixed and mastered. With the Pioneer A/V receivers, the
system — complete with a microphone — compensates for differences in
speaker size, speaker level, and speaker distance, and equalizes response
with 5-Band EQ, all automatically.

Acoustic standing waves occur when the sound waves coming out of
your speaker system resonate with those reflecting off the walls. This can
have a negative effect on the overall sound, especially in certain lower
frequencies. The result is often an overly resonant and "boomy" sound,
depending on the speaker positioning, your listening location, and the
shape of the room. The new Pioneer A/V receivers' Standing Wave
Control effectively moderates resonance. This technology also prevents
the inaccurate EQ settings that can be caused by standing waves.

The Advanced MCACC allows easy setup of surround

The Advanced MCACC applies "time axis" in measuring the
listening environment's acoustic characteristics and in applying frequency
response compensation. This enables the system to distinguish between
direct sound and room reverberation, resulting in even more precise,
minute adjustment of frequency response for human ears. The system
also permits "X-Curve Compensation" of frequency response — a livingroom sized version of an international frequency response standard
(ISO2969) used for designing movie theatres and dubbing suites.

These Pioneer A/V receivers come with HDMI
(High Definition Multimedia Interface) terminals.
This allows single-cable connection with HDMIcompatible devices such as the DV-989AVi-S(-G) DVD
player and PDP, for all-digital transmission of both audio
and video signals. Its benefits over conventional terminals
include a high bit rate — up to 4.45 Gbps for HDTV — for
processing large amounts of uncompressed high-quality
data. HDMI also ensures lossless transmission for highquality pictures and sound, as signals remain in a pure
digital state, without D/A or A/D conversion.

The units come with the newly-developed Sound Retriever, which
significantly improves the sound quality of compressed audio — such as
WMA, MP3, and AAC — to the level of CD sound. This Pioneer-exclusive

These Pioneer A/V receivers each come with a dedicated
iPod terminal and an iPod connection cable. This
connection provides the following benefits:
- Analogue signals from iPod are up-converted to
192 kHz/24-bit resolution.
- A broad range of audio features for A/V receivers — including Sound
Retriever, MCACC, Phase Control, DSP models, and more — are applied to
sound from the iPod.
- In addition to audio, you can also play back your iPod photos or videos.
(Because iPod nano does not have video output, photo can not be
displayed via the A/V receiver.)
- You can recharge iPod batteries via the connected A/V receiver.

Less is more. Pioneer Hybrid Amplification is a simple,
straightforward circuit design for packing the highefficiency, high-power six- or seven-channel amplifiers,
to ensure a cleaner, purer sound. Signals run along the
shortest possible length of wire from input to output —
and away from the "noisy" power lines — to keep their
purity and integrity high. Working in synergy with this advanced device is the
Freescale DSP featuring 180MIPS high speed and 48-bit processing, which
ensures quick, highly-precise processing of digital audio signals in various
surround formats — including WMA9 Pro, DTS 96/24, DTS-ES, and Dolby
Digital EX.

files encoded with Windows Media® Audio 9
Professional (WMA9 Pro). Connect the unit with a

The DV-989AVi-S(-G) features an upgraded version of the Pioneertrademark Digital Direct Pixel Drive™. If you connect the player with a
compatible A/V receiver or Plasma TV via the HDMI terminal, the new
technology allows all-digital signal processing and transmission — with
high 10-bit precision thanks to the newly-developed "VQE9" videoencoding LSI. Because the signals remain digital, they are free from
conversion loss, delivering pictures with less noise and finer details than
those with analogue conversion. The player also converts up pixels for
HDMI output.
VQE9 Video-Encoding LSI (DV-989AVi-S(-G))
The Advanced Digital Direct Pixel Drive™ features
newly-developed VQE9 video-encoding LSI. This
state-of-the-art device allows expansion to 10 bits,
and all the processes for improving picture quality
are performed on a single chip, including:
• Effective noise reduction with Component Frame DNR Pro
• Highly-precise motion detection for more natural textures and
smoother edges of moving images from video sources
• A wide variety of picture adjustment options
• High-resolution progressive pictures (Dual PureCinema Progressive
Scan)
"Two-Dimensional Resolution Expander": Pixel Conversion IC
for HDMI (DV-989AVi-S(-G))
The Advanced Digital Direct Pixel Drive™ also features the "TwoDimensional Resolution Expander" pixel conversion IC, which upconverts traditional DVD video signals to high-definition resolution in the
most appropriate way for the connected monitor or TV. When the DVD
player is connected to a DLP projector with 1280 x 720 pixels, for
example, the pixel conversion IC up-converts the progressive 720 x 480
signals to progressive 1280 x 720 signals which exactly fit the pixel count
of the projector. The signals generated by the MPEG decoder pass
through the Two-Dimensional Resolution Expander, and then are output
via HDMI to an HDMI-compatible monitor or TV.
HDMI Interface (DV-989AVi-S(-G), DV-696AV-S, DV-490V-S)
These Pioneer DVD players feature HDMI (High
Definition Multimedia Interface), an industrysupported, uncompressed, all-digital audio/video
interface. Connect the DVD player with our A/V
receiver and PDP, for example, and HDMI's all-digital
signal processing gives you superior pictures and
sound — with no loss. It does this by allowing transmission of both audio
and video signals with no D/A or A/D conversion, through easy singlecable connection. By combining HDMI with 1080i/720p upscaler, you can
deliver optimal high-quality images for the PDP.

When video signals are output to non-HDMI devices, the DV-989AVi-S(-G)
uses the high-grade 108 MHz/14-bit Video D/A Converter. Combining 8x
oversampling with high 14-bit precision, this premium device ensures
superior linearity by preventing phase fluctuations. The converter also
controls overshoot and undershoot without affecting the original signals,
even when the picture has high contrast.
Dual PureCinema Progressive Scan
On DVD, movies are recorded in 24 fps format. To play back filmoriginated sources on NTSC TV, additional frames are inserted for output
in the NTSC format (30 fps). Pioneer's 2-3 Pull-down PureCinema
Progressive Scan Technology features highly accurate insertion and
reallocation of frames for progressive scanning. The result: smooth,
natural, film-like images free of bothersome artifacts like jagged edges on
moving objects.
All of the new Pioneer DVD players feature PAL/NTSC dual
system (with PAL-NTSC video converter offered by most units), and
allow progressive scanning with PAL sources, too. Dual PureCinema
Progressive Scan, the advanced version of the Pioneer's trademark
technology, enables the DVD players to provide this unique feature.

Coherent Source Transducer
One-piece Cone and Centre Cap
To ensure that all sound — direct and reflected —
arrives at the listening position with identical timbre,
the EX series employs TAD's exclusive CST
(Coincident Source Transducer) driver technology.
The Beryllium tweeter is mounted in the centre of the
magnesium midrange driver, allowing the sound
directivity to be precisely controlled at all frequencies. The resulting
aligned sound delivery is extremely smooth and coherent. Unlike
conventional drivers, the problems with phase and off-axis frequency
response have been totally eradicated.
Conventional speaker cones have a separate centre
cap, to make it easier to attach the cone to the voice
coil. However, this design weakens the cone's
mechanical integrity. The unique one-piece
construction of the cone and centre cap that was
created for the EX's Series' bass driver, combined
with the improved rigidity of the Aramid fibre
structure, produces a much stiffer and more rigid construction. Unwanted
cone resonances are pushed beyond the bass driver's operating range,
allowing the cone to accurately pass the coil movement on to the air and
significantly improve the accuracy of sound reproduction.

Beryllium Tweeter Diaphragm
Revolutionary Phase Control
The tweeter diaphragm is composed of Beryllium metal,
which is extremely light and rigid. This has resulted in
an ultra-strong tweeter diaphragm with perfectly solid
piston performance. It precisely reproduces the audio signal; limited
distortion or resonance is added to the audio performance. This pure
and solid performing diaphragm makes Beryllium tweeters ideal for
reproducing the high frequencies of DVD-Audio and SACD, up to 100 kHz.
These revolutionary audio formats recreate sound as it actually exists in
the real world, with all its original artistic qualities intact.
"Phase control" technology is the concept of managing the
time and phase response of the speakers, amplifiers and
software to realize the dramatic high-quality sound during
multi-channel sound reproduction. All the systems use the
same CST and woofer drivers, which along with the crossover allows for
perfect matching of the phase characteristics of all the speakers.
Additionally, S-W1EX subwoofer has a low pass filter (LPF) bypass
function installed. In combination with appropriate receiver, the phase
response of the complete multi-channel system can be optimized for
uncompromising surround sound reproduction.
Precision Curve
The Mark of Excellence
In traditional speaker systems, several speaker drivers are aligned on a
flat baffle. Because the sounds from each driver reach the listener from
different distances, this composition inevitably leads to a small degree of
confusion in overall sound. With Pioneer's EX Series, a revolutionary
baffle with a precise curved surface has been realized to solve this
problem. This is the "precision curve". By positioning the speaker drivers
on a three-metre radius sphere centred on the listener, the time it takes
for the sound to reach the listener's ears from each of the drivers is
precisely adjusted.

Fresh Sound from Vintage White Oak
The Secrets of Mature Resonance
Pioneer Pure Malt speakers have been
crafted from century-old white oak,
whose rich acoustics come from
decades of storing fine whiskey. A
Pioneer engineer discovered this
sound when he tapped on a piece of
whiskey barrel and immediately
recognized the intriguing difference
compared to new wood. The cut of the
wood was also superior "masame"
(straight grain) instead of "itame"
(bent or irregular grain). Because of
this superb quality, a top whiskey
maker had already been transforming
the wood into elegant furniture,
believing that "trees which took a
century to grow should be used for a
century too." By collaborating with this
whiskey maker, Pioneer transformed
these special visuals and acoustics into
the new A-A4SPT-PM Pure Malt
Speakers.
Whiskey ages in white oak barrels for fifty to seventy years. During that
time, subtle interactions take place between the tree sap and the alcohol,
making the inner structure of the timber highly resonant.
Here at Pioneer, it was an interesting challenge to shape the boards of
whiskey barrels into speaker cabinets, with the curved wood first needing to
be flattened out and dried. Some cabinets still feature authentic barrel nail
marks or whiskey stains. "Torafu" (tiger stripe) marks are proof that the
timber is carefully-chosen masame. The splendid colour of the wood will
also continue to deepen over the course of time. It is our fond hope that the
unique characteristics of these speakers will be appreciated like exquisite
antiques.
