SCHOOLS & EDUCATION
Education is the signature product in this small university
community and Platteville’s PK-12 school system contributes to our quality of life. Four public schools and one
private school serve approximately 1,535 students. 475
students attend grades 9-12 at Platteville High School. 440
students in grades 4-8 attend Platteville Middle School.
190 second and third graders attend Westview Elementary
School. 300 students ranging in age from 3-6 attend the
Wilkins Early Learning Center. St. Mary School, a K-8
parochial school, mixes religious instruction with a core
academic curriculum for 130 students.
Nearly 75% of the professional staff have Master’s
Degrees or higher, one of the many reasons why the
schools are known for their academic excellence. An
acclaimed music program provides choral, band and
orchestra performance opportunities and a array of
extra-curricular academic and athletic programs provide students with avenues to pursue special interests.

It all begins early and the Wilkins Early Learning
Center provides Platteville’s youngest with a great start
in a school designed to address the early learning
needs of children age 3-6. It’s a happy place that provides a great foundation for school success. Second
and third grade students develop their basic academic
skills and related arts in a rich school environment at
Westview Elementary School where parent-teacher-student relationships are actively nurtured. Daily physical
education helps to insure a healthy start for the young
at both Westview and Wilkins Schools.

An award winning middle school provides a solid academic foundation while addressing the unique learning
and social needs of young adolescent students in
grades 4-8. The district’s excellent performing music
program is launched at the middle school. And an
innovative, hands on pre-engineering curriculum called
Project Lead The Way is introduced to all students at
grades 7 and 8 in preparation for a sequence of higher
level science, technology, engineering and math courses that become available at the high school.
Post-secondary education is pursued by 85% of
Platteville High School graduates at either baccalaureate or technical colleges and they are well prepared by
a college preparatory curriculum. A cooperative education program provides specialized instruction, apprenticeships and other work experience opportunities for
those who plan to enter the work force directly after
high school. Platteville high school is considered an
innovator in the use of digital technology and graduates are well prepared to succeed in a technological
society. A wealth of extracurricular activities provides
students many opportunities to explore artistic, athletic, academic and vocational leadership pursuits.

HIGHER EDUCATION
UWP…what college should be
When you close your eyes to think about a college, what
do you see? Friends working together on class or club
projects? Professors teaching small-size classes using the
latest technologies? Academic programs that are aligned
with the nation’s workforce needs? Up-to-date, well-kept
facilities in a warm, caring and friendly environment?
Incredible opportunities for involvement in activities,
programs and events? If you believe this is what college
should be, then you have visualized the campus and environment that are the University of Wisconsin-Platteville.

HEALTH CARE & WELL BEING
“My doctor said I needed surgery.
After planning the surgery, I
learned I needed to plan my
recovery, too.”
Residents of the greater Platteville area are fortunate
to have their healthcare needs met by several medical
clinics, a hospital and a number of independent physicians, dentists, chiropractors and other qualified
healthcare providers.
My doctor suggested post-hospital care at
an HCR Manor Care “nursing home.” My
doctor told me, “they’re different than you
think.” So, I met their physical therapists,
visited their rehab area and talked to the
admissions director and case manager
who reviewed their successful patient
outcome history. After my surgery, HCR
Manor Care helped me rehabilitate so I’d
be ready to go home. I was surprised at
how young the patients were and that
many of them were receiving medical
rehab and returning home.
Accredited by The Joint Commission, Southwest
Health Center is located at 1400 East Side Road.
It offers the latest diagnostic and treatment options
and features a physician-staffed 24-hour emergency
room. Complete surgical and rehabilitation services
are offered along with a specialty physician clinic.
Adjacent to U.S. Highway 151, the beautifully-designed
Southwest Health Center facility offers expedient
access to quality care.
At HCR Manor Care, our team has
the expertise to guide you through
your personalized care program
so you can plan your recovery as
part of your planned surgery.

KATIE’S GARDEN
Katie Vaassen was a
very inspirational
young lady who
symbolized the
word “volunteer.’’
While in high
school, Katie
volunteered over
800 hours at the
Chamber of
Commerce and
continued to work
there while attending college. Katie passed away at the
age of 23 in May, 2004. As a tribute to our special
friend, the Chamber dedicated a garden in her name
“Katie’s Garden” on July 25, 2004.
Dozens of volunteers donate their time and talents to
make this one of the most beautiful places on earth!
This garden is full of color all season long and has
benches, tables, picnic areas and walking paths
throughout. The focal point is a beautiful gazebo
where one can sit and enjoy the beauty of the gardens.
It has become a destination for weddings, wedding
receptions, garden parties and picnics. Countless
photographers enjoy the beauty of this Garden during
all four seasons. Bridal Boutique filmed a commercial

in Katie’s Garden in 2008. “Katie’s Garden” is the
anchor to the Platteville Community Arboretum and
Rountree Gardens project that encompasses areas
along the Rountree Branch Trail. The trail, which
meanders along the Rountree Branch stream through
the Platteville community, is a picturesque quiet
hiking and biking trail that is becoming a focal point
of the community. As the Chamber/Visitor Center
is located along the trail, the creation of “Katie’s
Garden” is only the beginning of a truly wonderful
experience for our visitors and community alike.
A visit to “Katie’s Garden” is a must!
Platteville Community Arboretum
A grassroots community initiative, the Platteville
Community Arboretum, began with the development of
Katie’s Garden in 2004. This community-based organization consists of a Board of Directors and numerous
volunteers. Due to the success of “Katie’s Garden,”
more garden and natural areas have been planned
along the Rountree Branch stream and trail. A dog
park was developed along the trail and is a great place
to exercise one’s pet. A community garden is one of the
next major projects. Other future plans include woodland gardens, flower gardens, and prairie and natural
areas as well.

“Celebration of Heroes” in Platteville!
It was announced by the Platteville Moving Wall Committee that the
Vietnam Moving Wall Memorial will visit Platteville, Wisconsin from July
9, 2009 to July 13, 2009. The theme will be “Celebration of Heroes.” Visitors to
the Vietnam Moving Wall Memorial, which will be located at the University of

well cared for. There will be a large opening ceremony, a large veteran’s parade on Sunday, July 12 with a
formal closing ceremony. Between opening and closing, there will be many related events in the tri-state
area for the visiting public during the five days that the Moving Wall Memorial is at the University.
There will be a commemorative Vietnam Moving Wall coin issued for purchase to help assist in fund raising for these events. For more information
about this Celebration Coin along with a complete schedule of activities go to:

Platteville began as Platte River Diggings in 1827. Once
home to the Winnebago Indians, Platteville was settled in
the mid 1820’s by European miners who were attracted by
rich lead deposits. After the discovery of mineral lead in
the area, the region’s economy began to flourish.

The 1931 Mine Train
In 1827, Major John H. Rountree and Major John H.
Campbell purchased Metcalf’s lode and opened a general
store. Two years later, this small 150-person community
was named Platteville. The town was planned in a style
reminiscent of Yorkshire, England – quaint and practical
– with access to the town’s mine entrances. In the 1800’s,
the town was further developed and Platteville was
incorporated in 1880.

Rollo Jamison Museum-Rollo Jamison, born in Beetown,
Wisconsin in 1899, started collecting arrowheads on the
family farm while still a boy. This was just the beginning
of his life-long interest in history and the objects used by
people in their everyday lives which grew to a collection
of over 20,000 items. The guided tour of the Rollo
Jamison will take you back to the turn of the century with
exhibits of carriages, farm implements, tools, a tavern/
general store, a kitchen and parlor, musical instruments,
mechanical music boxes and more.
The Performing Arts Series brings internationally recognized artists
to Platteville September-May. Recent events have included
The Vienna Choir Boys, Riders in the Sky, Kings Singers, Momix,
Ricky Skaggs, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy and always include the hottest
Broadway tours like Rent, Chicago and more!
Historic Rountree Hall (although not available for
touring) is a reminder of Platteville’s past. Rountree Hall
was the site of the original Platteville Academy, which
existed from 1842 – 1866 when it was converted to a state
Normal School. General Ulysses S. Grant dedicated the
north wing of Rountree Hall in 1867. It also housed the
Wisconsin Mining Trade School, which was responsible
for the creation of the Big “M” on the mound seven miles
east of Platteville. (see “Outdoor Adventures’’)
The Heartland Festival produces musicals each summer with a
“stock’’ company of professional actors. The Festival shows are on a
rotating repertory schedule to allow visitors to see several shows on
one visit to Platteville. 2009 season includes: Forever Plaid,
Good Man Charlie Brown, And The Killer Is and The Producers!

supporting and promoting member businesses.
Chamber members benefit from ongoing promotions
and business networking opportunities. The Chamber
is dedicated to making Platteville’s future as bright as
its past.
The community is fortunate to have the Platteville
Business Incubator (PBII) in the midst of the City’s
Industrial Park. This venture has enabled a number of
entrepreneur businesses to get started. Several of the
businesses have expanded within the Incubator building and a number have been “incubated’’ to the point
where they built their own building or relocated to
larger space within the community. These graduations
prove incubation works! For more information call
