Fellow collector Hillery Rebeka Sproatt joins us in this issue
to show us her work and chat about small things.
Were you born a tinkerer do you think?...can you remember when you first started being drawn to the little things?
I think I have always been interested in small things. I remember when I was young,
my mom discovered a miniature museum right next to a tea shop. She often took my
sisters and me there and we would marvel at the miniature models and homes all filled
with replicas of things we knew and used in real life. It was as though no detail was left
out, and I thought it was magic.
I wondered how one person could spend so long making something that most people
would so easily overlook. I loved the way small things made me look closer.
As a child what was your favourite thing to “make believe”?
That is a very hard question for me. I liked to play make believe games as a child, but I
don’t think I ever made belive magical worlds or fantastic characters. My play was very
much rooted in reality. I would play “house” a lot with my best friend Genieve and our
sisters. I always wanted to be the mom. I think I was very bossy.
I do remember a few ocassions where I confused reality with what must have been
a dream…those were fantastic moments. At one point I was sure I could fly. I would
run outside, vigioursly flap my arms up and down, and jump; convinced I would lift off
slowly like a floating leaf.

You started your own clothing range called ‘Rebe’ with your mum when you where only
f ifteen! How did that come about?
My mom, Debra Weiss, and I enjoyed day dreaming about all the things we thought
we could do together, and we were both very impulsive. So one day we got a business
license and decided to make handbags. Our prototypes looked very different from the
collection today, but we had such a wonderful time designing, playing with materials
and sourcing fabrics.
We always attempt to design with ourselves in mind, so we make beautiful things we
wish existed but can’t find. It is very exciting.
I am very proud of Rebe and I think Rebe provides women of all ages an opportunity
to feel both beautiful and comfortable in clothing that is as special as they are. I probably wear something Rebe almost everyday! You can view Rebe’s newest collection at

I love this quote you sent me..”I often make believe that tiny worlds exist in the smallest things and if we look long enough we might get to see something truly special.”
Is this how you draw on your inspiration in the unusual or forgotten?
I do try to be a careful looker in life, even though I still miss so much. I often feel small
and I like to be reminded that even the littlest things matter.
There is a wonderful children’s book called Hug Time by Patrick
Mc Donnell, about a little cat that travels all around the world giving creatures of every
kind a hug. Eventually, the cat gets to a very tiny undiscovered creature . He scoops
up the little bug and says “we welcome you”. I love this book because it is a wonderful
reminder that everything matters, that we are all connected and that no matter how
small, we can still affect change.
In a tiny world created just for you…what would we see…?
I would love to see inside the smallest of things, until there is only colors and dust
dancing.
You seem to be able to create amazing work in all different mediums! What is your
favourite thing to be doing moment?
I enjoy making my embroidered dolls very much. I like to imagine them having a history
apart from me. Like people, I think that each doll tells a different story with her face.

Your work is available from ReForm School where else would find your work and what
have you got planned for the rest of the year?
I will be selling with Rebe at the Renegade Craft Fair in both San Francisco (July
31-August 1) and Chicago (September 11-12) this year and I hope to do a few more
craft festivals in between.

What excites you most right now?
I am excited by so many things! Here are some of my favorites at the moment…
Grandma Moses, Sweden, Holland and Turkey (becasuse I am going for a visit), my
morning cereal, avocado and fresh baked bread, brown and black together, The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar by Roald Dahl, and I just saw the movie Dune, directed by
David Lynch, and I thought it was fantastically beautiful!

Crème de la Crème a la Edgar

Up a few stairs on a quiet, curving Copenhagen
street, you will find Helle Høgsbro Krag’s wonderful children’s shop, Crème de la Crème a la
Edgar. So seduced I am by CdeC that I swear
my heart beat increases as I get near and I’m
hopeful that Helle’s cousin, who is studying to
be a priest, or the calm and caring Sofie will be
on duty in case I pass out with excitement. Seriously, ask my husband, I regularly hyperventilate
in that doll-sized shop that oozes with Danish
charm, and is filled with Helle’s fabulous finds.

What did you dream about when you were little?
At first I dreamed about owning my own canoe, and later on I dreamed about being
a midwife.
What do you dream about now?
I have many big dreams but I can always dream about a pair of Yves Saint Laurent
heels….
Where did your interest in designing things for children come from?
Children should always have the best quality and I felt the urge to make the finest
stuffed knitted toys and clothes that were comfortable, humorous and long lasting. And I have always loved thing in a perfect small scale…, well, not everything off
course, ti hi…
Can you tell me how you came to name your boutique?
My sister Trine came up with the idea, [it’s taken from the 1970’s Disney movie, Aristocats] and I was thrilled with the name. Now after I have been spelling it for the past
8 years over and over again, I wonder if a shorter name would have been easier…
What is Danish about your design?
Nothing can be more Danish than [our] little flag—Dannebrog--on a handmade
wooden pole. [We] crochet it in many shades of red from a soft pink to a wine bourdeaux. As a service our Japanese customers we also made a Japanese flag, but
much to our surprise they wanted nothing to do with their own flag, but only bought
the Danish one.
How do you find Danish knitters?
My husband is a musician and I am with him sometimes on the Danish tours. Then in
the middle of nowhere I makes the tour bus stop, if a small house shop or something
like that catches my eye…. Through the years I have gathered many different knitting
ladies.
What’s the most unexpected quality of your brand?
Though our brand is known for is exceptional quality in yarn and fabrics, I am still
dedicated to fashion and last season I just had to use a neon orange yarn, even
though it was only available in 100% acrylic, to get the right look for a children’s
Christmas dress.

Did you have a favorite book as a child?
”Sådan får man et barn”/”How to make a child” written and drawn by Per Holm Knudsen was above all my favorite book as a child. It is quite daring and frank in the words
used to describe the actual conception and development of a child. I just loved the
bright colored drawings and now when I sell the book in the shop the nostalgic look
attracts everybody.
What makes you laugh?
Every year I gather everyone who helps in the shop during the year, from my cousin
who studies to be a priest to the young office girls, my creative knitters and the daily
staff at a Christmas lunch. The laughs I get that day will last the whole year…
How do your modeling and television experience influence your work?
My many different working experiences have taken me all around the world, from
shooting a commercial on the amazing inland ice in Greenland to the vast lands of
Australia and all the people I met over the years are still today an inspiration for me in
my work and designs.
Can you tell me about the interior design of the store?
It is bit the like wedding dress phrase: “Something old, Something new, Something
borrowed, Something blue…” And with Crème de la Crème à la Edgar more is more,
when it comes to Interior...
What attracts you to Liberty fabrics?
Liberty of London is such a great old company, and their design is timeless, the quality
impeccable and their colors an amazing experience. It is recognizable and makes my
mind wander back into a childhood with soft floral bed linen. I want to pass that warm
feeling on to future generations.
What’s your favorite escape?
I just found out that my new hairdresser has a massage chair which is amazing to sit
in. Now I want to go there all the time and my hair just gets shorter and shorter.
What’s next?
Right now I see yellow everywhere, so Easter I can’t wait..In the shop no season passes us by without being celebrated and appreciated with everything we can muster up.
Share a wish?
I don’t hope that my husband will read this, but a Bloody Mary shared with Robert Pattinson wouldn’t harm… Maybe it is my midlife crisis?

There is so much involved in each one of these images..How long did it take create
the story?
I think it took around 9 months from the start to finish. It involved a tonne of road
trips hunting for locations, a close encounter with a not so friendly brown snake and
meeting heaps of wonderful families.
You have worked in film, fashion and advertising.What is your favourite photographic
medium to work in?
It would be creating images for myself and working towards exhibitions. I love the
feeling of staring at a freshly finished image and quietly patting myself on the back
for making it all come together.
I read in your artist statement that you love to read fairytale’s…Do you have a favourite fairytale and why?…
Peter Pan’s my favourite as he’s very partial to a spot of mischief and he refuses to
grow up. The story of Peter pan also relates to my love of creating pictures as it gives
you a reason to retain and embrace a childlike sense of curiousity about the world.
In your images the children are often accompanied by an animal..You mention it
could be a friendly spirit that guides the children on their journeys through the wilderness? Do you have one?
I love polar bears, and am mildly obsessed with them.
Are your images memories from your childhood?
Some are mine, some are friends tales and ideas others come from trolling through
many a children’s book.
Did you grow up in the wilderness?
No I wish, I’m a city Kid, but our house backed onto a massive reserve with dense
bamboo which was ideal conditions for explorations and many a game of commando.
What’s next for you?
I’ve started work on two new series. One is another childhood series focusing on
imagination and the degradation of the environment and the other is an Indigenous
series, both of which I’m planning to exhibit early next year.

To make these super sweet japanese washi tape
necklaces follow the 5 simple steps......
1.
Firstly chose your tape...washi
tape is readily available online try
places like www.cutetape.com (it’s
nice to have a few different colour
patterns and widths). Choose what
you would like to make your necklace
on..we suggest necklace cord or thin
ribbon. Grab a pair of scissors and
you are ready to start.
2.
Start by wrapping the tape around
and around the cord or ribbon until
it resembles the thickness of a bead.
Then tie a knot.

Keep going on remembering to
