Fall sits as a relief of sorts on the calendar, pushing away the humidity of the dog days of summer and for a time, fighting off the impending bitter cold of the frostiest winter nights. Many yards are decorated with the more dark aspects of the Halloween season, with ghosts and goblins and monsters and zombies highlighted by the purple and orange lights on displays outside houses where swimming pools and barbeque grills have been packed away. For children, of course, it can be a bittersweet time; it means an end to those long summer days for another school year’s grind. But the delicious aspects of autumn bring many of us joy, including those very same kids. The coming of fall brings with it so many moments of delight, from the year’s very first taste of pumpkin spice to the sweatshirts and cozy sweaters donned to watch the kickoffs of football games under the bright lights of crowded stands. It ushers in the thoughts of the hayrides through the woods to the sprawling pumpkin patch, where children choose their favorite pumpkins off of the vine to take home and decorate. The pleasant, satisfied smiles as they hold their chosen gourds on the ride back through the woods, no doubt deciding what face to embody the would be jack o’lanterns with. There is a reason why so many poets and writers have been preoccupied with the sights, sounds and smells of fall since as far back as the written word was recorded. The great Ray Bradbury described autumn like no one else could, with delicate depictions of color and intoxicating scents of fallen leaves and late September rainfalls. It’s hard to ignore the stark imagery of autumn, beginning with the changing of the colors from green to gold, orange, yellow, red. The trees echo the season’s change, becoming the bare focus of the backdrop of chilly purplish skies. The air is crisp, and the promise of scary movies under warm blankets with warm cider greets many of us like an old friend who has waited all year for us. Of course, there is October, that favored autumn month, after the bright yellow harvest moon of September’s autumnal equinox. The birds begin to migrate in swarms, and dusk provides them with the perfect frame in the sky. October brings the imagination to the front of happy kids and adults everywhere, because we know what else is coming…Halloween. It’s the time of year where the sun meets the nippy fall air and weaves the perfect day to rake a yard full of leaves to jump and play in. There will be trips to the orchard, with apples and donuts and the games of autumn. Scarecrows and harvest décor pleasantly help to bring the feeling of fall to the lawns of many neighborhoods all across America. And of course, the other types of hayrides, the spooky trips through the haunted nights of Halloween scream parks. The unique time of year where the haunted attractions are sprouting up everywhere, daring children and adults alike to walk through their creative and creepy paths, be they indoor or outdoor. In that spirit, Fear Finder is so proud to be a guide to get the would be haunted to the scares and events of their choice for many years now…remember, we can get you there, but we can’t make you go in! Of course, another great tradition are the Halloween parties, where chosen costumes are worn. It’s that time of year where you can be anything you want to be without having to feel weird about it. That freeing moment where you choose what you will wear when you take your pillowcase or candy bag out into the sacred night of All Hallow’s Eve. Even television is engaged in the autumn season, airing Halloween specials of all kinds on our favorite shows, some so memorable that they become staples of future fall celebrations for decades to come. Stores become more interesting, carrying the colorful and monster filled displays of candy and Halloween masks and costumes. There are so many wonderful things to look forward to every fall, it’s nearly impossible to name them all or to pick a favorite. That’s why autumn, in all its majestic color and feeling of something special waiting to happen, might be the best season of all. And what about YOU? When you think back on autumns past, what are some of YOUR favorite traditions? Your favorite Halloween costumes, moments, and events that shaped your richest fall memories? 14 FEAR FINDER NEWS › FALL 2016 FALL 2016 › FEAR FINDER NEWS 15 16 FEAR FINDER NEWS › FALL 2016 FALL 2016 › FEAR FINDER NEWS 17 CIDER MILLS Blakes Orchard & Cider Mill ...................................586-784-5343..................17985 Center Rd.........................Armada, MI Kapnick Orchards.....................................................517-423 7419.....................4245 Rogers Highway...............Britton, MI Pankiewicz Farms Cider Mill...................................586-727-9051....................10377 Lindsey.............................Casco, MI King Orchards............................................................877-937-5464...................4620 n M-88...............................Central Lake, MI Conklin’s Cider Mill...................................................517-726-0127.....................5100 W Gresham Highway........Charlotte, MI Country Mill...............................................................517-543-1019.....................4648 Otto....................................Charlotte, MI Long Family Orchard................................................248-360-3774...................E 1540 Commerce Rd................Commerce, MI Sweet Seasons Orchard...........................................517-524-8535...................15787 Allman...............................Concord, MI Dexter Cider Mill.......................................................734-426-8531...................3685 Central Street..................Dexter, MI Sprague’s Old Orchard.............................................269-782-8578...................33085 Middle Crossing.............Dowagiac, MI Erie Orchards & Cider Mill.......................................734-848-4518..................1235 Erie......................................Erie, MI Crane’s Cider Mill......................................................269-561-2297...................6054 124th Avenue...................Fennville, MI Spicer Orchard & Cider Mill....................................810-632-7692....................10411 Clyde Rd.............................Fenton, MI Masters Cider Mill.....................................................810-736-7100....................6140 Bray.....................................Flint, MI Al-Mar Orchard..........................................................810-659-6568..................1431 Duffield................................Flushing, MI Koan’s Orchard..........................................................810-659-8720...................12183 Beecher.............................Flushing, MI McCarron’s Orchard..................................................810 659-3052...................7456 Carpenter Rd....................Flushing, MI Bayne’s Apple Valley Farm......................................989-695-9139...................5395 Midland..............................Freeland, MI Leaman’s Green Apple Barn...................................989-695-2465..................7475 N. Looking around, you see items and furniture, some of which are basically “clues” as to how to get out of the room. You have a certain amount of time to solve this real life puzzle…search for hidden passageways, band together with the other lost souls and figure it out (a satisfying conclusion), or watch time run out and lose… This is an example of a somewhat new phenomenon in live attractions called Escape Rooms. Many of these puzzle games have popped up around the U.S. over the past few years, and their popularity has increased as more people in the mainstream become aware of what they are. Many escape rooms have a simple premise; all kinds of settings are used to develop an atmosphere from which to play the game, or, in more direct terms, solve the “puzzle”. For that reason, they aren’t restricted to the Halloween season. In fact, many escape rooms are located in permanent areas, where people can go and enjoy them throughout the year. Companies and organizations have also been quick to latch onto the “team building” aspect of a good escape room. They send a group together to further camaraderie and assist them in building their teamwork and leadership abilities; many of these rooms are not likely to be solved without a number of people working together toward the same goal. It can be a very effective tool. The first escape rooms probably originated about 10 years ago, and fixed locations were introduced in Asia around the early 2010s. The soaring popularity has led to a worldwide embracing of these live action games, as people from all across the globe flock to them in lucrative numbers. The Halloween season has introduced some interesting evolutions to these rooms, of course. It goes without saying that industry haunters would find such games to be intriguing and utilize them in more macabre ways. Scott Graubner of Michigan is an inhabitant of one such haunting escape room, utilizing a take in which a zombie (Scott, in highly effective makeup) is hanging on the wall in the middle of the room. The conceit here 24 FEAR FINDER NEWS › FALL 2016 is that the people who are playing the puzzle game in the room have to figure how to get out before the zombie effectively makes his way off the wall to “get” them. It’s a frightening concept in theory, and adds to the exuberance of the whole game. Now the escapees are keeping one eye out for the zombie as they simultaneously try to solve the mystery of the escape. Laughter and good times abound. As of this writing, Scott reports (rather ominously) that no one has figured their way out yet. Some escape rooms feature several different types of rooms in one location. The Great Escape Room, for instance, has libraries, billiard rooms, infirmaries and more. With locations in eight states including Michigan and Illinois, the Great Escape is described as a puzzle mixed with a scavenger hunt. Groups of up to 12 people try to team up and figure their way out…or, at the very least, get a really cool group photo and one heck of a memorable experience. There are already so many different types of escape rooms that it’s difficult to try to figure out what’s coming next for these live action puzzlers. Of course, the best of these are extremely difficult, which in some ways is the point. No one would want to waste time on an escape room that is super easy to figure out and has no real situation or mood development to speak of. The people who create these rooms generally do so with the notion that they need to make it hard enough on a team of folks to escape that they HAVE to revert to teamwork in order to find their way. Those are the ones that people will feel the most sense of accomplishment in escaping, as well. Like most themed attractions that hit the popular culture, the escape room is likely going to continue to evolve and grow into even bigger and better locales. People are always going to look for new and different ways to try to execute the most unusual puzzle rooms possible; that is a given. Who knows what escape rooms will look like given another decade of popular evolution?
