Looking back to the beginning of
my son’s path with ADHD
T
here were little signs in preschool.
When he was 3, Adam’s teacher mentioned that he
was silly and disruptive. She worried it would get worse
when he was 4, but it didn’t. Things must have calmed down,
because she didn’t mention it again.
Then in kindergarten his behavior became more difficult. He
started having meltdowns. One time he thought he was going
to leave school with me for a doctor’s appointment and when
the appointment was cancelled, he screamed and screamed
because he had to stay in school. I remember walking away
from the classroom listening to his major meltdown and
wondering if there might be something wrong with my little boy.
But then there were days— and sometime weeks — without
incident. He was sweet and charming.
In first grade, he was the teacher’s go-to for turning on the
lights or running things to the office. He had trouble sitting
still, the teacher said. One day she called me to tell me he was
having a hard day. He had issues in gym; he’d gotten angry and
ran out of class. He might need a little extra TLC when he got
home, she said. Adam’s first grade teacher had a special place
in her heart for him despite the fact he wasn’t the easiest kid.
Around that time the tantrums got worse. He’d rip his sheets
off his bed and throw them out the door. He threatened to cut
his favorite bear with scissors. Once, he even threatened to cut
himself. That’s when we took him to therapy the first time.
By third grade, Adam was diagnosed with ADHD or anxiety
or maybe a bit of both. It’s never been totally clear. All he knew
6
Chesapeake Family | January 2015 | ChesapeakeFamily.com
was that he had anger issues. He was impulsive. He’d get mad,
hit a classmate and then feel awful about it. We tried different
medicines, counseling and even a bit of hypnotherapy. As we
tried to figure it out, life went on.
We have a story on page 14 about problems that surface
in preschool and the red flags preschool teachers look for.
It’s often the first time signs of learning or behavioral issues
become apparent. If you have concerns about your child,
check out the story. It might give you some clues that could set
you on the right path.
We were proactive with Adam’s issues. We had him tested,
and we’ve tried to help him anyway we can. It’s not been an
easy road, but it’s so gratifying to see his growth. He graduated
from middle school last year as a Presidential Scholar. High
school this year has been a bit rocky, but it’s so much better
than I ever imagined it would be. Maturity does wonders and
sometimes I can see glimpses of the man he may one day
become.
Adam still has his issues, and he’s most likely the reason my
hair is gray, but he’s made great strides since preschool. And
I’m so proud of him.

Five tips to tell if your teen is drinking or using drugs
T
hink your teen has been using
drugs or drinking alcohol? Here
are five ways to find out if your
hunch is right, from the Partnership for
Drug-Free Kids.
Use your nose. Have a face-to-face
conversation when your teenager comes
home from a night out with friends. If your
child has been drinking alcohol, smoking
cigarettes or smoking marijuana, the smell
will be on his breath, his clothing and his
hair.
Take a closer look. After your teen has
been hanging out with friends, check his or
her eyes. If she’s been smoking marijuana,
her eyes will be red and heavy lidded, with
constricted pupils. If she’s been drinking,
her pupils will be dilated, and she may
have difficulty focusing on you. Flushed
face and cheeks may also be signs she’s
been drinking.
Watch for mood changes. How is your

5 warm places to
stroll with your
baby this winter
I
t may be nasty outside, but you can
still take your baby for a brisk walk
in the stroller to burn off those holiday calories. The key is finding an indoor
spot to stroll. There are plenty of places
in the area, from malls to skating rinks to
indoor tracks, where you can walk where
it’s warm. Here are just a few of them:
WESTFIELD ANNAPOLIS
This mall gets high ratings from our
Facebook fans and Karen Davis, owner
of Fit4Mom Annapolis. It opens daily at
7 a.m. for mall walkers and is all on one
level. One time around the perimeter of
the mall equals a little under a mile.
“Just a few laps will give you a great
workout,” Davis says. “It’s a great place
to stroll with kids because there is
always music playing and so much for
them to look at while you’re walking.”
ARUNDEL MILLS, HANOVER
This mall is also on one floor and is a
big loop that totals a mile. It has wide
halls and also opens at 7 a.m. every
morning for walkers. They key is to get
there early before the crowds arrive.
THE MALL IN COLUMBIA
You can walk from one end of this
two-floor mall to the other then take the
elevator up and head back for a change
of scenery. The mall opens at 6 a.m.
every day, so you can get in a workout
with your early rising tot before heading
to work.
Sunday, 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Drop in fees are
$8 for Annapolis residents and $10 for
non-residents. Memberships are also
available.
PIP MOYER COMMUNITY
RECREATION CENTER,
ANNAPOLIS
Strollers are welcome Mondays from
10 a.m.-noon when the rink holds a Tot
Rock-n-Roll. The rink is open at this time
to kids younger than 6 who can bring
ride-on toys to use in the rink. Moms
with strollers often walk around the rink
at this time. Admission is $5.
Pip Moyer has an indoor, elevated,
four lane walking/jogging track that is
open to those pushing strollers when
the center is open. Hours are MondayThursday, 6 a.m.-9 p.m.; Friday, 6 a.m.-8

Problems in

What might cause a
teacher to raise a red flag
BY KRISTY MACKABEN
our-year-old Nathan Bowen
of Laurel was eager to start
preschool last year. He
loved learning and playing
with other kids so it was
a surprise when he started having
difficulties.
As a baby and toddler, Nathan hit
every milestone on time or even early
and was “very bright,” says his mother,
Amanda Bowen. “We saw no cause for
concern,” she says.
That is until his preschool teachers
began sharing their concerns about
Nathan’s behavior. He was easily
frustrated, anxious about transition, had
trouble sharing and manipulating toys
and was unable to sit still. The structure

of preschool was a struggle for Nathan,
Bowen says.
“He needed constant redirection,”
she explains. “It was definitely hard
to hear and very emotional, but I was
determined to learn all I could and get
him the very best treatment.”
There are many stories similar to
Nathan’s — children who showed no
signs of delays or difficulties until they
started school.
Preschool is like a Petri dish, says

other kids, or not recognizing letters
and numbers, preschool teachers say
they are on the lookout for red flags for
developmental or learning delays.
“This is the first time that many
families are getting feedback about
their children,” Grimes says. “If there
is some sort of issue or syndrome or
problem, the earlier you can intervene
and provide support, the better for the
child ... the better the outcome.”
Although preschool teachers will
Chesapeake Family | January 2015 | ChesapeakeFamily.com
not make a diagnosis, most will
communicate concerns with parents.
Nathan was eventually diagnosed
with sensory processing disorder and
a fine motor delay, which resulted in
an individualized education plan and
therapy. He has benefited tremendously
from the extra suppport, Bowen says.
Noticing, acknowledging and talking
about red flags for learning and
development is essential in preschool,
says Joan Mele-McCarthy, executive
director of the Summit School in Selbyon-the-Bay.
Read on for some common problems
that can surface in preschool. Keep
in mind, however, that these red flags
may be indicators of a serious issue
or they might not, says Cindy Sandler,
a Columbia-based psychologist who
works with children.
ATTENTION ISSUES
Red Flags: Inability to sit still,
disruptive, acting out, acting silly
Squirming during story time is to be
expected in preschool. It’s not easy for
kids that age to sit still for long periods
of time, but they should be able to listen
to a story or play one activity for 20
minutes, Grimes says.
Preschools often try to create a
program where students aren’t
expected to sit still for long stretches,
Mele-McCarthy says. So if children
still have difficulty paying attention
or focusing on one activity, early
intervention might be necessary. Attention issues include both
children who seek attention by acting
out in class, pushing buttons or
becoming physical with peers, and
children who lack attention and are
unable to sit still, follow directions or
focus on an activity for very long.
AVOIDANCE BEHAVIORS
Red Flags: Resisting going to
school, refusing to engage, transition
problems
Many children have trouble
adjusting to preschool. Crying or
clinging to parents the first week or
so is to be expected. But there might
be a problem if children consistently
resist going into the classroom, refuse
to engage in group activities or have
trouble participating, Grimes says.
These children might also have
trouble transitioning between
activities, she says. Whether they stall
or refuse to start an activity or they act
out or throw a tantrum, there might be
deeper issues involved.
By age 3 or 4, children should
be able to interact appropriately,
play actively with peers (instead of
parallel play) and manage frustrations
effectively most of the time, Sandler
says.
DIFFICULTIES WITH FINE
AND GROSS MOTOR
DEVELOPMENT
Red Flags: Clumsy, awkward gait;
problems coloring and drawing
Preschoolers aren’t always the most
graceful creatures, but an awkward
gait or inability to use utensils or color
or write effectively could mean delays
in fine and gross motor development,
Mele-McCarthy says.
Frequent falls could be a sign of a
gross motor delay, and the inability to
draw a circle by age 3 could be a sign
of a fine motor delay. These children
could benefit from extra attention,
occupational therapy or
other treatment geared to these skills,
Mele-McCarthy says.
SPEECH AND LANGUAGE
DELAYS
Red Flags: Not talking or difficult to
understand, minimal interaction with
peers, lack of eye contact
By age 3, children are miniconversationalists, Mele-McCarthy
says. Although they won’t always
pronounce every word or letter
correctly, 3-year-olds are eager to
share their thoughts and interact.
An evaluation might be necessary
for children who are talking but aren’t
intelligible, or for children who do not
interact much with peers or adults.
Other signs of a speech or language
delay could be a lack of eye contact,
an inability to understand rhyme or not
being aware of letter sounds. These
children might not enjoy listening to
stories, and they might remember the
“Alphabet Song” one day, but not the
next, Sandler says.
Children with speech and language
delays often experience other
difficulties, such as behavior problems
or an unwillingness or disinterest in
participating in school activities.
UNUSUAL SENSORY
BEHAVIORS
Red Flags: Putting things in the
mouth, uttering unusual sounds
Preschoolers who constantly bite,
chew or suck on things like their
shirtsleeves or toys in the classroom
might need extra sensory stimulation,
Grimes says. Making unusual sounds
at inappropriate times is also an
indicator of a sensory issue.
For children who need sensory
stimulation, there are things that can
help, says Meg McClary, director of
Little Creek Preschool in Chestertown.
Children who experience sensory
overload might need some downtime
away from the commotion.
Children who are under sensitive
might be overly physical and can’t
moderate their actions. Children who
are overly sensitive might not be able
to handle certain sights, sounds,
textures or foods. Sensory-seeking
behaviors can be disruptive — biting,
rocking or tapping to make noise.
While each of these red flags
doesn’t necessarily mean there
is a problem, two or more can be
indicators of conditions such as
ADHD, autism, dyslexia or sensory
processing disorders, Sandler says.
“Every child develops skills at a
certain pace,” she says. “It’s looking
at a cluster of difficulties. Intervention
is extremely important.”
For Nathan Bowen, the extra help
has been invaluable.
“Early intervention is vital,” Bowen
says. “Every child deserves their best
chance … Nathan is thriving, and I am
so grateful.”

For over 40 years, Indian Creek School has incorporated
neuroscience research into our educational program.
As a result, we lead the way in studying how children learn
and in understanding that maximum learning is achieved
by working smarter, not necessarily harder.
Personalized teaching works best.
Only if you understand a student’s
capabilities can you know how to best
challenge that student. Indian Creek
School teachers become familiar with
each child’s abilities and learning profile
to stimulate and challenge rather than
stress or discourage.
Students are happier - and learn morewhen they’re working at their full intellectual
capacity. The Indian Creek curriculum
includes Advanced Placement and
STEM programs - especially effective
with smart and curious students, who
crave challenges to keep them engaged.
.
.
Neuroscience studies show that movement
has an amazing effect on learning. Physical
activity boosts brain power by reinforcing
neural connections and is key to helping
students maintain focus. Indian Creek
School builds movement into lessons to keep
young minds sharp - and make the school day fun.
Research has shown that Arts Education
strengthens neural connections. Indian
Creek School integrates the arts with
academic subjects to enhance the classroom
experience from Pre-Kindergarten through
12th grade. Every student has the opportunity
to create visual art, sing or play an instrument,
and be part of a theatrical production, making
our program especially vibrant as a result.

Making
sense of
allowance
How to instill financial
responsibility
BY ALLISON EATOUGH
E
laine Morgan and her
husband, John, wanted
their children to learn the
value of money early on.
So when Katie and Ryan
were in elementary school, the Ellicott
City couple opened a savings account
for each of them. Whenever the kids
received money as birthday or holiday
gifts, they had to put half of it in their
savings accounts and give 10 percent
to charity, Elaine Morgan says.
“They got in the habit of saving,” she
26
says. “And the importance of giving
back.”
But as the sister and brother
neared their teenage years, and their
understanding of money grew, the
Morgans agreed it was time to give
them more financial responsibility.
They began giving their children an
annual allowance in the summer based
on academic performance and not
chores, Morgan says.
“To us, that’s the most important job,”
she says. “The rest of the chores around
Chesapeake Family | January 2015 | ChesapeakeFamily.com

parents and kids manage allowance,
including:
• Allowance Manager (Free)

• A+ Allowance (Free)

• iAllowance ($3.99)
the house, that’s just being part of a
team, a part of our family.”
According to the American Academy
of Pediatrics, about three in five
teenagers receive an allowance. Experts
say whether given weekly, monthly or
annually, an allowance is one of the
best ways to teach children and teens
overall financial responsibility, including
how to save, spend and budget money.
“It will plant the seeds so you can
prepare your children (for the future),”
says Ron Campbell, financial planner
and president of Campbell Financial
Services in Glen Burnie.
If you are considering giving an
allowance to your kids, here are six tips
to help you with the process.
1. SET A SCHEDULE
Experts say before allowances start,
parents should determine when and
how often money will be distributed.
The American Academy of Pediatrics
recommends paying children on the
same day every week. That consistency
will help them practice budgeting their
dollars until the next payday, AAP says.
And if children run through an allowance
too quickly and want an advance? The
bank is closed.
2. DECIDE ON AN AMOUNT
THAT WORKS FOR YOUR
FAMILY
There’s no magic number when
it comes to allowance and a child’s
age. Some parents try to match what
neighborhood kids are receiving,
while others, like Shelley Marcella of
Elkridge, give half of the child’s age in
dollars each week. Others estimate how
much they spend on clothing, snacks
and entertainment — like going to the
movies — and then give a portion of
that amount to the child.
“It’s very individual,” says Cheryl
Rubenstein, an Annapolis psychologist.
“Frankly, I don’t think you want it to
be too much but enough so they can
practice budgeting for something they
really want.”
In the Morgan household, Katie, 15,
and Ryan, 13, each get $250 for the
summer if they perform well in school
and meet their parents’ expectations.
If they achieve straight “A’s” or perform
better than expected, they receive
a $50 bonus. If they perform below
expectations, they are docked $50.
“John says, ‘When the grades go
down, the wallet slams shut,’” Morgan
jokes.
3. SET SAVING AND
SPENDING RULES
Campbell says children should save
at least 20 percent of each allowance
payment. This will teach them the
importance of building a safety net in
the future, he says.
Susan Smith Kuczmarski, a Chicagobased parenting expert and author of
“Becoming a Happy Family: Pathways
to the Family Soul,” recommends
saving 33 to 50 percent.
As for spending rules, Rubenstein
says parents should think about things
they don’t want their child to have,
such as violent video games, and tell
them the guidelines early on. She said
parents should also encourage children
to donate part of their allowance to
charity.
“Introduce the concept of helping
others,” she says.
4. LET THEM MAKE
DECISIONS — GOOD AND
BAD
Regardless of the amount saved or
given, children need to make some of
their own decisions about using their
allowance – and then learn from their
mistakes, Kuczmarski says.
“For example, if they overspend and
haven’t saved enough to buy a sibling a
birthday present, they’ve not managed
their money well and need to make
some shifts,” she says. “Giving them
the opportunity to call the shots does
teach kids some valuable lessons about
money management.”
One day last summer, instead of
buying French fries for lunch at the
beach, Katie and Ryan Morgan went
back to the family’s condo to make their
own lunches – and save money.
“It really made them think twice,”
Morgan says.
Ryan has even passed up
snowboarding trips with friends to save
HOW MUCH TO PAY
Wondering what you should give your
kids for allowance? Here’s what a poll
of 2,300 adults who were asked by
Harris Interactive what they felt was an
appropriate weekly allowance for three
age groups showed:
•
•
•
Ages 4 to 9: $4.10
Ages 10 to 13: $8.70
Ages 14 to 17: $16
Source: www.harrisinteractive.com
his money for a GoPro camera.
“It took him a while to save up, but
it was so meaningful to him,” Morgan
says. “It’s probably his (most) prized
possession.”
5. DON’T TIE ALLOWANCE
TO CHORES
Research shows tying allowance
to chores doesn’t work, says
Richard Rende, an Arizona-based
developmental psychologist.
“When applied to fundamental
household responsibilities ... it sends
the message that these tasks are
low value activities,” he says. “The
allowance undermines the sense that
kids should be developing an important
social role in the family, which is driven
by being responsive to each other’s
needs.”
The social importance of empathy
and care giving “gets lost” when money
changes hands, Rende says.
6. CONTINUE WITH
ALLOWANCE, EVEN AFTER
TEENS GET JOBS
Parents and their teenagers should
work together on a budget, Kuczmarski
says.
“With more money coming in the
teen’s door, then more money can be
saved and perhaps invested,” she says.
“Teens can learn to buy stocks or invest
in other ways.”
Still, parents should keep a “watchful
eye” on spending, she says.

Cheap places

this winter
O
BY KATIE RILEY
n a recent chilly morning at
Annapolis Mall, a dozen toddlers
climbed and crawled around an
aquatic themed “playground”
with a whale tail slide, a mini
submarine and plenty of interactive toys.
Parents and caregivers sat back and
watched as their little ones ran and played
within the warmth of the indoors.
“It’s hard to find a place to play when it’s
cold out, but this is really convenient. It’s
free and it gives them a chance to burn
off some energy,” said Katie Pinkham, of
Riva, who was watching her two boys,

Henry, 18 months, and Thomas, 4.
The opportunity for kids to exercise and
energize can be hard to come by in the winter
months. Fortunately, this area has numerous
community centers, indoor playgrounds,
gyms and museums that offer indoor play for
free, or at least a low cost.
The Northeast Community Center in
Chesapeake Beach offers dozens of free
indoor play activities for kids in the winter
months.
“Kids want to get moving, even when
it’s cold outside,” says Paul Lundberg,
recreation assistant coordinator. “We try
Chesapeake Family | January 2015 | ChesapeakeFamily.com
to provide a lot of fitness opportunities for
families, from free structured classes to
open play.”
Here are several places where kids can
run and climb indoors this winter without
breaking the bank.
MALL AND STORE
PLAY SPACES
Arundel Mills, Hanover
A Maryland-themed play area at Arundel
Mills includes replicas of the Thomas
Point Lighthouse, a Maryland blue crab
and an Oriole singing in a birdbath. Kids
can climb and slide on a replica oak
tree or play near a patch of Black-Eyed
Susans. Afterwards, head to the Bass Pro
Shop to spy some stuffed critters or look
for local fish in the 23,000-gallon aquarium
with a waterfall.
Located between Best Buy and Medieval
Times. simon.com/mall/arundel-mills
Ikea, College Park
Parents can drop off kids for an hour of
supervised play at Ikea’s Småland Play
Area in College Park. The enclosed space
has climbing apparatus, a ball pit, art
stations and numerous toys. Kids must
be 37-45 inches tall and potty-trained to
play. Stay to eat at the store’s in-house
restaurant where kids meals are just 99
cents.

Mall in Columbia
At the health and wellness themed
play area at Columbia Mall, kids can
crawl through a water bottle, play in an
interactive ambulance driven by a turtle,
cross a bookworm bridge or slide down a
healthy pile of veggies.

Marley Station Mall, Glen
Burnie
The play area in Marley Station Mall has
a classic storybook theme with a jumbo
apple, stone bridge with Humpty Dumpty
and life-size crayons. Kids can practice
their balancing skills on an enormous ruler
or run around the vast carpeted area.

UNEXPECTED ENTERTAINMENT AT AREA LIBRARIES
BY KAREN STYSLEY
W
hen Joe and Doreen Pagano moved from Florida to
Lusby in 2006, they didn’t
know much about the area:
where to go, what to do, or
how to have a date night without the kids.
The library changed all that for them.
“For us, it was a perfect starting point,”
Doreen Pagano says.
At the Calvert Library, the Paganos
discovered maps to hiking trails and recommendations for day trips to Annapolis
as well as a weekly teen night where they
could safely leave their kids. The library
is still a big part of their lives — and a
perfect place to find indoor fun during the
winter months.
“I would venture a guess that close to 50
percent of our entertainment comes from
the Calvert County library. And we do a lot
of stuff,” Joe Pagano says.
Their many library exploits include
learning about local gardening, playing
Mahjong, meeting local authors, attending concerts, learning how to edit digital
photos and researching car maintenance
online — not to mention feeding their avid
reading habits.
Calvert libraries aren’t the only Maryland
library systems reaching out to adults with
programs and activities beyond the book
checkout desk.

discussion.
Providing a range of activities
Even when programs have nothing to
do with the written word, they still dovetail
with the library’s mission, according to
Robyn Truslow, public relations coordinator for the Calvert Library.
“Of course we have tons of books.
Reading is a big component. Certainly
early literacy is a big component,” Truslow
says, but at the same time, libraries can

be meeting places and sources for personal development.
“We believe in transforming people and
offering opportunities for lifelong learning,”
Truslow says.
Librarians in Calvert answer questions
and teach classes, but they also organize
community seed swapping and music jam
sessions.
When libraries first began, Truslow ex-
ACCESS AT HOME
Local libraries offer plenty of ways to
stay entertained for free from the comfort of your own home. Look online or
ask your local librarian to help you:
• Borrow e-books and audiobooks
to use on your phone or tablet.
• Get online homework help.
• Browse online magazines and
newspapers.
• Stream music, movies and TV.
Howard County patrons can download three free songs per week.
plains, they were a place to access information, which came in the form of books.
That is still true today, but now libraries
have many more kinds of resources to
share.
“Now information is in so many different
formats,” Truslow says, and libraries have
adapted.
Likewise, in the Howard County Library
System, “our mission is education,” says
Christie Lassen, director of public relations. However, that education can take
many forms — from infant story times to
programs for adults that run the gamut of
topics.
For example, on Jan. 7, Baltimore historian and educator Wayne R. Schaumberg
will lead a discussion on the Chesapeake
region during the War of 1812. And the
next day the library finishes a three-part
series on Cutting Edge Discoveries in
Neuroscience to Boost Your Brain, led by
Dr. Majid Fotuhi.
Expanding the reach of books
The Anne Arundel County Public Library
has taken books out of the library and
into a less conventional setting: a bar. The
Books at Bars monthly book discussion
group meets at 1747 Pub in Annapolis.
With the wine comes a new crowd of 20s
and 30s-somethings who might not otherwise sign up for library programs.
“It’s a great way to get them engaged
with the library,” says Noah Brode, public
relations assistant. “Any time we can get
people reading — at a library branch or a
bar — it’s a good thing.”
Since September, the monthly events
your time
have been really popular, he said. Everybody reads the same book, and then
librarians lead discussions at the tables.
The unlikely atmosphere may be part of
the program’s success.
“It’s a setting people feel comfortable in,
rather than a more stuffy meeting room at
the library,” Brode says.
Of course, programs inside the library
can also be fun — and useful. Those
who would like to download an ebook to
their phone or search for a job can attend
classes that walk them through the process. For those excited about ancestry,
Anne Arundel County Public Library offers
an “Introduction to Genealogy” class to
Put Your Child’s Care in
the Hands of an Expert
learn about how to use online research
tools, such as one Jan. 13 in Odenton.
Meeting community needs
Anyone hoping to find out what’s new
and fun at the library can stop by a local
branch or check out a library’s website.
Whether it’s finding an event, a group or
just a good book, chances are library staff
have put together something that meets
the need.
“Part of our mission is to be a community meeting place in addition to (providing)
lifelong learning opportunities. We can do
both,” Truslow says.

Dry 85 in Annapolis
SPECIALIZING IN GOURMET
COMFORT FOOD
BY REGINA VEROW
W
hen Dry 85 opened in downtown Annapolis, it
added a highly stylized bar and restaurant into the
historic Annapolis dining and drinking mix. Owners
Brian and Lisa Bolter, also the duo behind Red Red
Wine Bar, wanted to create “a modern industrial
take on a Prohibition-era speakeasy” with this venture.
Dry 85 oozes ambiance. From the abundance of brushed metal
to the wood accents and whiskey bottle sconces, it’s clear this
isn’t just any bar. The theme is obvious, but not over the top.
Whiskey is the main attraction at Dry 85, with more than 100
handpicked varieties to sample. Don’t worry if you don’t know
your bourbon from your Scotch. The staff is highly knowledgeable
and ready to help you pick the right drink. You will also find a large
assortment of craft beers and artisanal spirits if whiskey isn’t your
thing.
Even the food at Dry 85 is unique, with a full menu branded as
gourmet comfort food. We sampled the fried green tomatoes with
beurre blanc and a balsamic glaze, the bacon-wrapped scallops
with a Crown Royal maple reduction sauce and the black bean
quinoa burger — all winners. Dry 85 even has a children’s menu if
you ask.
44
Although Dry 85 is based on a theme of a back alley garage
turned speakeasy, this establishment hasn’t stayed a secret in the
Annapolis area. And attention to detail on every level is sure to help
keep the Bolter’s latest offering on the radar for quite a while.

Orph’s Monkey Bread
Serves 10
Monkeying around in the kitchen
Y
ou’ll hear many chefs and
professional cooks talk
about how they learned to
cook at their grandmother’s
knee, whisking away while she offered
encouragement, guiding them through
the kitchen basics. My grandmothers
though both incredible women, were a
bit different in their approach.
In their world, children were to be
seen, not heard, and definitely were
not to run around the kitchen while
dinner was in progress. Despite
spending numerous summers with
both grandmothers, I recall very little
time in the kitchen, with the exception
of special occasions at my grandma
Orph’s house (Orph is short for
Orphaline).
Her go-to dish with kids was
almost always Monkey Bread. Bits
of refrigerated biscuits are dipped
in butter, then cinnamon sugar, then
baked to gooey perfection. My brothers
and I couldn’t wait to rip into the
nubbins of sweet, sticky dough, and we
may have even licked our fingers a few
hundred times in the assembly process.
It’s super easy to make Monkey
Bread, and there are countless recipes
all over the web. This recipe though,
comes from a cookbook that my
grandmother made and gave to each of
us decades ago.
Make your kids part of the process
of creating something fun, easy and
tasty. Even if they’re just little guys, they
can roll, dip or place the dough balls
into the pan. They’ll probably lick their
fingers, too. So grab a couple of packs
of refrigerator biscuits to have on hand
and you can whip these up in no time
at all, either for breakfast or a quick kidfriendly dessert.

•
1 can large refrigerated biscuits
2/3 cup sugar
1 teaspoon cinnamon
6 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
and cooled a bit for tiny fingers
• 1 pinch salt
Preheat oven to 400-degrees. Lightly
grease an angel food cake or tube pan
with cooking spray or a bit of melted butter
(kids love to use a pastry brush to coat all
of the nooks and crannies in a tube pan).
Combine sugar and cinnamon in a bowl.
Cut each biscuit into quarters. Roll each
piece into a small ball. Dip each biscuit ball
into the melted butter, then the cinnamon
sugar. Place the coated biscuit ball into
the tube pan. Repeat the process until all
biscuits have been coated.
Bake for 20-22 minutes, or until browned
and firmed. Allow to cool for 10 minutes,
then flip onto a plate, removing tube pan.
Serve immediately.
