40 Years, 40 Faces: A new photographic exhibition
celebrating the first 40 years of the Volvo Ocean Race
To celebrate the Volvo Ocean Race's 40th birthday in 2013, the race presents a photo
exhibition with a spectacular new take on sailing’s premier round-the-world adventure.
The exhibition is running at the Volvo Ocean Race Museum in Alicante, Spain from
Friday, June 14 until Feb 28, 2014 and uses 40 images to tell the story of a race that
began life as the Whitbread on September 8, 1973, and remains sport’s greatest test
of teamwork, skill and stamina.
Images have come from many sources including Onboard Reporters, former
competitors and race photographers, while one stunning image was unearthed via a
Facebook campaign (see below for details).
As the pictures show, a lot has changed in the 40 years of the race. Denim jeans and
shirts have been replaced by high-tech survival gear, the roomy wooden interiors are
now austere carbon fibre shells and nude sailors no longer navigate by sextant and
dead reckoning.
But the images also make it clear that the essence of the race has not changed at all.
The farewells and reunions are still as emotional and the effort and exhaustion are just
as complete.
Some of the sailors presented are true Legends – iconic figures like Conny van
Rietschoten, Sir Peter Blake, Skip Novak and Eric Tabarly – while others have been
all but forgotten. Elsewhere, we focus on fans, family members and other figures
connected with a race that has touched the lives of so many.
While not every great Volvo Ocean Race sailor is featured here, and it is far from
being a chronological history of the race, the universal themes are all covered.
“The Volvo Ocean Race has always been about courage, commitment and the trust
our sailors put in each other as they race around the world – the knowledge that
without each other, they couldn't possibly prevail,” said Race CEO Knut Frostad.
“The images here are testament to that.”
40 Years, 40 Facebook
The 40th photo came after the race launched a search for a hidden gem on Facebook
and our website. Organisers asked fans to send in any photos they had concentrating
on faces connected with the race, on people rather than boats.
Some outstanding images came in but it was particularly gratifying to receive a picture
taken by a former competitor in the race, Anders Odelberg.
Anders competed on Swedish Entry in 1981-82 and his ‘Iceman’ photo fits perfectly
with the theme – that while superficially so much has changed over the 40 years, the
essence of the race remains exactly the same.

New Zealander Brad Jackson
keeps a watchful eye on a storm

In context: Brad Jackson is a race
legend and at the age of 40 (when the picture was taken) he had already had a
maxi victory with New Zealand Endeavour in 1993-94 and another with ABN
AMRO ONE in a Volvo Open 70. He would soon make it a hat-trick with
Ericsson 4. Here, what catches the eye is the vastness of the ocean, the
fearsome looking cloud and Brad’s inability to take his eyes off it. The
atmosphere in the Indian Ocean looks tense in the extreme.

In context: CAMPER are on the way to
Cape Horn and both men pictured are
determinedly getting on with the job
despite the deeply unpleasant conditions.
Bannatyne puts on a strained smile for the camera while Minoprio is holding on
to the grinding pedestal, putting up with the loads of the Volvo Open 70. Within
a couple of days, the ferocious waves had taken their toll, with CAMPER forced
to divert to Chile to repair sever bow damage.

In context: PUMA hopes of Leg 1 victory
were dashed on November 21 with the
devastating sound of their mast snapping.
They would live to fight another day – but
only after diverting to the most remote
human settlement on earth at Tristan da
Cunha, and waiting for a transport ship to
come to take them for repairs. At the time the picture was taken, Read and
Harrap don't know if they’re out of the race completely – and that fear is etched
in the skipper’s expression.

In context: Pammenter lost a tooth and split his lip when a massive wave
swept him into CAMPER’s rigging. Rae performed an operation on his crew
mate to patch up his bust lip. CAMPER were giving it everything at the time in
an effort to catch up with the leaders, but Rae kept a steady hand and
Pammenter’s good looks were restored back on land.

In context: This was one of the last pictures from Kosatka Team Russia, who
were forced to withdraw after Singapore because of funding problems. It’s a
beautiful image, which says everything you need to know about the effort
required to sail one of these boats. Gray’s sheer physical strength leaps out at
you from this picture, as he strains every sinew during the sail change.

In context: Despite appearances,
Walker has not been crying. The
British skipper’s irritated eyes speak
for the salt from waves constantly
washing over the boat – clearly a major irritant, even on a short leg. That said,
there may be a note of disappointment in that stare too, as Abu Dhabi missed
the podium following their victory in the previous leg.

win.
In context: Arms aloft, thumbs up and
smiling: this image is a perfect
illustration of a man who lit up the Volvo Ocean Race with his enthusiasm,
friendliness and passion. This was Olsson’s final leg victory in his sixth race
appearance, his first as skipper, and was brilliantly executed. To the grief of
everyone involved in the race, Olsson died in April 2013 after suffering a stroke
when working as a coach for Team SCA. He is sorely missed.

In context: This leg is often referred to as the
toughest ever sailed and you can read the effects on Torben Grael’s face. The
relief at making it safely to China, with the team’s race lead intact, is clearly
visible, as are the effects of the sea water in his eyes and the general fatigue in
the wrinkles in his skin. It was freezing cold and raining when the boats arrived
in Qingdao in late January – hence the balaclava – and Grael is simply
exhausted.

In context: There are a lot of shots of tearful farewells and baby-kissing
reunions, and it sometimes feels that we’re intruding on moments that deserve
to remain private. This picture, taken on the dock after a rough first leg had
seen half the teams forced to retire, achieves a delicate balance. The camera
remains very respectful, managing to keep the moment private while still
conveying the warmth of the emotion at dockside.

In context: Telefónica won the first
three legs in 2011-12 but had fallen behind Groupama in the overall standings
at this point and three rudder breakages in quick succession ended their
hopes. Everything that could go wrong, did go wrong for Telefónica but
Martínez doesn’t rant or rave. The Basque cuts a dignified figure even as he
copes with the grim reality of the team’s position and the fact they have lost the
race.

In context: Novak was entrusted with the
navigator’s role in his first Whitbread, which
made the arrival into Cape Town at the end of
Leg 1 a special moment for the American. “What was really poignant for me
was seeing Table Mountain on the horizon from 50 miles out, having navigated
there with a sextant and a time piece.” If Skip looked a little apprehensive in the
iceberg shot here he is like a rock star. He makes sailing in the race look
incredibly cool, with the pose, the tan and the muscular, windswept look.

In context: Abu Dhabi were going at
full tilt to try to make up time, and were
sailing at roughly twice the speed of
their rivals. Greenhalgh is a picture of
exhaustion as he succumbs to sleep
while still on deck. The helmet and
high-tech survival gear give him the look of an astronaut – weightless, almost,
and utterly spent.

In context: Leg 5 was incredibly
tough, making the rounding of Cape
Horn an especially good moment. “It’s
a huge relief,” skipper Franck Cammas wrote here. “It feels like we’re leaving
the biggest risk behind us.” How wrong he was. Four days later, their mast
broke and they were forced to sail to Punta del Este under jury rig. Before the
first Whitbread in 1973, fewer than 10 sporting yachts had made it around
Cape Horn and it is still regarded as sailing’s most important milestone.

African coast. Nélias must have been distraught at seeing his tactical gamble
fail and at this point he knows there is nothing he can do about it. Still, the daily
challenges of life at the extreme go on and his beard must be trimmed.

pretty smelly six days into the third leg. This picture is notable for the all-tooevocative positioning of feet next to face. The photographer is Guo Chuan, the
Onboard Reporter on Green Dragon and the first Chinese sailor to sail round
the world with a team in the race.

In context: Groupama are hundreds of miles behind the fleet after a risky
option along the African coast went wrong. They are alone in the middle of the
Atlantic Ocean but all men on deck, and particularly Phil Harmer at the front,
show the same faces of absolute concentration. The relentless nature of the
race is not always understood. This picture nails it.

In context: The teams were in the midst of a
40-day Southern Ocean leg when this picture
was taken. The contrast between the three sailors up on deck and Freddie

and why not? Shanks has a broad smile on his face and carries two mugs of

Australia’s Casey Smith examines the
starboard rudder on il mostro in the
2,000 mile qualifier before the start of
the 2008-09 race.
In context: Casey, who also appears a little further along in this exhibition, is
so confident, so relaxed as he gets into the water that you would think he was
performing this task in port rather than somewhere in the Atlantic. In fact, so
casual does Casey appear that it almost seems he’s about to take his
surfboard out to catch some waves. If you look closely, you can see that he is
wearing a climbing harness and is safely secured to the boat with a halyard.

In context: Because of the threat of piracy in the Indian Ocean, organisers
made the decision to ship the boats from a secret safe haven port in the
Maldives, to a point off the northern Emirates coast. The teams were worried
that their multi-million euro high-tech boats would be damaged during the
process and seeing them being lifted up into the cradles was a real ‘heart-inmouth’ moment. Fortunately the loading and unloading operations passed off
without a hitch.

In context: Rick Deppe had experience
in two editions of the Whitbread (Fortuna
in 1993-94 and Chessie Racing in 1997-98) before moving into television
camera work, and a cv that included the groundbreaking Deadliest Catch made
him an ideal candidate for the role of Onboard Reporter when the job was
established for 2008-09. Here, Rick persuaded Jerry Kirby to take a ‘staged’
shot – and one that has become an iconic image for the OBR programme.

In context: This shot is included to
illustrate how many other people are
involved in the race beyond the sailors themselves. Here, Ian Roman is
himself visible in the back of the helicopter as he captures the action with a
fish-eye lens, sending pictures back for live publication online. The fact that the
door is wide open makes the shot a little unsettling – even if you don’t notice
why at first. It’s not quite as dangerous as it looks, however. A harness holds
the photographer safely in place.

ONE, shows his schoolboy delight after
completing overall victory.
In context: Sanderson is responsible for
one of the great quotes of the race, making this a moment to savour. “This is
my Olympic gold, my Mount Everest, my childhood dream,” the New Zealander
said after completing victory. It’s not always easy to explain to people who are
unfamiliar with the sport just what it means to win the Volvo Ocean Race.
Sanderson summed it up perfectly with his quote, and the look on his face is of
a man who can scarcely believe his own achievement.

In context: 2008-09 marked a major change in the Volvo Ocean Race route,
with India and China both included for the first time. This decision to open the
race up to new territories created a whole new set of challenges for the teams
while creating millions of new fans – and a lot of work for voracious local media
(including the smiling reporter with the microphone pictured here).

In context: This is the winning image from a
Facebook competition to find the 40th
photo in our exhibition, as we asked fans
to
send in any pictures they had featuring
people in our race. Amongst many fine
photos taken at dockside at the villages and from spectator boats on the water,
we were amazed to receive this from a former competitor in the race. Anders
Odelberg was a crewmember on Swedish Entry in 1981-82 and he took this
shot of team mate Wilhelm von Koskull during Leg 3 from Auckland to Mar
del Plata in Argentina.
