In addition to competing in the Games, more opportunities to get involved are now surfacing on our website and social media forums: namely, entertainment and spectator opportunities. This programming is as likely to engage cinephiles, thespians, concert-goers, and hobbyists as it is athletes and sports fans, and the 1 week of the Gay Games now boasts 105-plus entertainment events. Ranging from Boy George’s concert appearance at August 11’s White Party, to a gallery showing at the Cleveland Museum of Art on the 8th, to conferences at Northeast Ohio universities, the list is evergrowing. party from 2pm to midnight on August 10. To get you started, we’ve compiled a guide below so you can easily sample what the Gay Games has to offer and how to stay apprised of new developments. Each Gay Games is associated with an Inter national Rainbow Memorial Run. The event pays tribute to the memory of artist Keith Haring, lesbian activist Rikki Streicher and Dr. Tom Waddell, the Founder of the Gay Games, and to all members of the Gay Games family lost, and in particular to AIDS and breast cancer. Participants are encouraged to bring rainbow flags and wear rainbow clothes. The official Gay Games flag will be passed from between each participant. Free and open to all. Opening Ceremony, 7 p.m. Quicken Loans Arena, Cleveland. Featuring singer, dancer, and radio host Lance Bass, Broadway actress Andrea McArdle, and the legendary Pointer Sisters. Special appearances from Alex Newell of Glee and Greg Louganis. Dancers, cheerleaders, the Gay Games community chorus and marching band will also be involved. A 10-hour dance p a r t y, featuring inter nationally known, New York City-based DJ/ producer Joe Gauthreaux with local DJs Saint and Glisten, plus surprise performances, produced in conjunction with the AIDS Taskforce of Greater Cleveland, an affiliate of the AIDS Healthcare foundation. Free admission. Concert Band Performance, 7:30 p.m. State Theater, Playhouse Square, Cleveland. More than 150 musicians will practice separately then unite in Cleveland for three intense rehearsal days before this feature performance. Playhouse Square is the “world’s largest theatre restoration project,” and t h e c o u n t r y ’s l a rg e s t performing arts center outside New York City (eclipsed only by Lincoln Center). Tickets are $30 and can be purchased at www.playhousesquare.org /events/detail/gaygames-9-lgba-team-bandpersonal-best Choral Concert, 7:30 p.m. State Theatre, Cleveland. 100 sopranos, altos, tenors and basses will perform under the artistic direction of worldrenowned Dennis Coleman, famous for his work with the Seattle M e n ’s a n d Wo m e n ’s Choruses, involvement in the gay community, and collaboration with such acclaimed artists as Maya Angelou, Frederica von Stade, Kristin Chenowith, Judy Collins, and Lily Tomlin. Tickets are $30 and can be purchased at www.playhousesquare.org /events/detail/gaygames-9-lgba-team-bandpersonal-best 14 August 2014 Flair Fest, 12 p.m., Main Street in Downtown Akron. The festival begins at noon with great local entertainment occurring throughout the day along with street performers, a juried art show and food vendors. Free admission. 5:30 p.m.: Indigo Girls, Lock 3 -- 200 S Main St, Akron, OH 44308. Opening acts Hannah Thomas, followed by Anne E. DeChant. The American folk rock duo of Amy Ray and Emily Saliers comprise the Indigo Girls, borne out of Emory University in 1987, and well renowned for their lesbian and environmental activism and several U.S. Hot 100 hits. Tickets can be purchased for $10 online or through Akron Civic Theatre box office. 16 August 2014 Closing Ceremony, 5 - 10 p.m., Mall C, Lakeside Avenue across from Convention Center (between Ontario and East Sixth Street), Downtown Cleveland. As Games Week comes to a close, gather with old and new friends to celebrate the memories made, the personal-best victories and get energized about what’s to come when the Gay Games goes to Paris in 2018. Enjoy the special Andrew Christian fashion show and dance the night away under the Cleveland sky. Participants (for whom admission is free) will gather pre-ceremony at 4 p.m. at the Cleveland Convention Center and rock out before marching into Closing Ceremony.
