Extra money action during
DETROIT—The Tour telecast season begins on ESPN
Sunday, Oct. 25 at 1 p.m. ET
with the final matches of the
PBA Senior World Championship, PBA Women’s World
Championship and the PBA
Trick Shot Invitational featuring Hall of Famers Parker
Bohn III, Norm Duke and
Brian Voss plus additional
Tour stars, Chris Barnes, Sean
Rash and two-handed specialist Osku Palermaa.
The Lumber Liquidators
PBA Tour telecasts begin Sunday, Nov. 1 at 1 p.m. ET with
the finals of the Motor City
Open.
Stone and Pedersen will
have the ability to talk with
players during competition using earpiece/microphone technology that was introduced
for the first time during last
summer’s GEICO PBA Team
Shootout hosted by Six Flags.
Viewers will hear directly
from the bowlers about their
equipment choices, strategies
and adjustments they will employ during the matches.
“For the first time ever the
viewing audience will be able
to get inside the minds of the
greatest players on the planet,”
said Pedersen, a 13-time Tour
titlist and ranked 35th on the
list of greatest players in PBA
history. “You will hear the
player’s unique insights, strategies, adjustments, and much
more. Add that to the CATS
information and you have the
perfect mix for new fans as
well as the hardcore bowling
fanatics.”
PBA and ESPN will use
the Computer-Aided Tracking
System (CATS) for all World
Series of Bowling telecasts this
season. The CATS technology
measures ball speed, trajectory
and the number of ball revolutions. Another innovation will
be coverage of the Cheetah
Championship in reality-style
which will give bowling fans
a behind-the-scenes look of an
entire PBA Tour event. The
Cheetah Championship will be
aired on ESPN Sunday, Nov. 8
at 1 p.m. ET.
Each World Series of Bowling show will also feature Pedersen’s “Quick Tip” segment
and Stone will host special
World Series of Bowling features from Detroit’s historic
Thunderbowl Lanes arena.
During his career, Stone has
also worked World Cup Soccer
and college football, including
numerous bowl games.
“I’ve been fortunate to
work a lot of great sports
events and I can tell you that
working with Randy as part of
the Lumber Liquidators PBA
Tour telecasts is as rewarding
as anything I’ve done,” Stone
said. “It seems like the PBA
and ESPN are always bringing
something new to Tour telecasts which makes it especially enjoyable to call the action
for what is one of the nation’s
most popular sports.”
The preliminary rounds
of several Tour and PBA
Women’s Series presented by
BOWL.COM events were conducted at Thunderbowl Lanes
in August with the final rounds
taped for airing on ESPN this
fall. Following each of the
Tour telecasts, the tournament
champions will appear in a
“post-event” interview show
that will air exclusively on
pba.com’s Xtra Frame.
The Tour picks up its traditional live schedule beginning
Jan. 4-10 with the Don and
Paula Carter Mixed Doubles at
Lava Lanes in Medford, Ore.

Helen Duval BVL Scholarship
Club Donates $10,930.95
To The National BVL
by Phyl Knoll
The ”club” was the brainstorm of Dorothy Mauldin of Marietta, GA. Dorothy was a
dear friend and fan of Helen Duval, Berkeley CA. Helen, of course, was not a stranger
to the bowling arena and one of our most elegant professional female bowlers of her time.
Helen began her role as BVL Ambassador in 1972, touring VA hospitals all over the country to teach recuperating veterans how to bowl and providing tips on adaptive techniques
necessary due to injuries. Duvall became known for her recruitment of even themost
reticent of veterans onto the lanes - forming a strong bond with the patients. During her
almost 30 years as our (BVL) Ambassador, Duval was credited for getting hundreds of
vets active in the sport. Both VA patients and staff eagerly anticipated her clinics. As
was was said by the Director of National BVL, Elizabeth Montonya, “Although Helen is
recognized in our sport as a pioneer in women’s bowling and one of the founders of the
youth bowling movement, we at BVL, think of her as a living legend--based on her work
with our veterans.”
Joining Dorothy in her brainstorm to show tribute to Helen, were believers and dear
friends to Helen, Lily May Hester, of Sierra Vista AZ and Elaine Mulroney, Shoreline WA.
who would act as Co-Founders and so, in l995, the new club was born and named the Helen
Duval BVL (Fan) Club (HDBVLFC). Dorothy, Lily May, and Elaine were well known
to most all of the WIBC officers and directors and who were helpful in making meeting
space available to the Club at the WIBC Annual Convention each year. Large numbers
would attend the meeting and without twisting their arm, ready to contribute towards the
club’s progress and success. Over time, the membership involved bowlers from almost
every state and the numbers reached short of 500. The purpose of the club was to honor
Helen Duval and promote the BVL. And, as our Honoree, Helen was to always have a
voice in all the planning. After six years of operating on the premise that the Founder,
Dorothy Mauldin would always be here to lead and we to follow, Elaine and Lily May
received a letter from Dorothy in May 2000 to tell them that due to her continuous failing
health and other existing circumstances she could no longer be actively engaged with her
part of leadership, but did not assign her leadership role to either of them. Instead, Elaine
and Lily May were dedicated to achieve the goals of the club and would continue working
toward those goals. However, no policy or guidelines of any kind had been established;
and no By-Laws had been adopted and the club had no elected officials. So, these two
women and dedicated volunteers worked tirelessly on these huge tasks.
Then, on April 20, 2002 in Milwaukee, WI at the dinner meeting of the HDBVLFC,
Dorothy Mauldin, installed the very first Slate of Officers and Directors:
Phyl Knoll, Hawthorne CA. President
Helen Matthews, Huntsville AL. 1-VP
Margie Bishop, St. Louis MO. 2-VP
June Cross, Reno NV. Secretary
Elaine Mulroney, Shoreline WA. Treasurer
Rose Erdos, Canton OH. Sgt-at-Arms Directors:
Elaine Hagin, Castro Valley CA. (WIBC BVL Chairman)
Alpharetta Callaway Pittsburgh, PA.
Helen Lesh, Roseburg OR.
Shirley Schmardel San Diego CA.
Mary Jane Sporar Joliet, IL.
The HDBVLFC maintained three bank accounts. An account which was originally
opened when the club first organized, with funds from generous donations from the founders themselves. It was merely left in a brokerage account to gain interest and as a security
blanket in case of emergency. Through the talent, hard work, and apparent out of pocket
expense in many cases Lily May, designed an informative Newsletter which was sent to
the members, a large number of whom , would rarely fail to show their appreciation by
sending our treasurer, their generous donation. A General Fund Account eventually was
established along with a Scholarship Fund Account. The General Fund Account took care
of our annual donations to National BVL; supplies, printing, postage; a few incidental
expenses we had for the Annual Dinner Meetings over and above the cost of the dinner,
which each attendee paid for in advance; etc. etc. We were very frugal in our spending
and frankly, I’m sure the Treasurer didn’t receive all the receipts from the spending of
board members and on some occasions, that of some volunteers.
In 2004, at Helen Duval’s request, our name was changed to Helen Duval BVL (Scholarship) Club (HDBVLSC). The intent of the scholarship was to recognize young female
scholars who met the standard of excellence on our application and was the Daughter;
Grand-Daughter or Great-Grand-Daughter of a veteran of the USA Military. They were to
be: (a) an active member of the YABA (Junior or Collegiate) and an amateur as defined by
YABA rules. (b) a graduating high school senior ACCEPTED to a credited post-secondary
learning institution, i.e. any public or private university, junior or state college, technical
institute or specialized trade school OR currently attending any of the schools listed. (c)
Not more than 21 years of age as of August 1 of the current year. We proudly recognized
these seven qualified young ladies. (2001) Kristin Lee, Norwalk CA; (2002) Katrina
Gartin, Whittier CA;
(2003) Stacey Wetmore, Tucson AZ; (2004) Michelle Quirk, Roseville CA; (2005)
Savanna Porter, Mesa AZ; (2006) Amanda Pisano, Hawthorne NJ and Rachelle
Davis, Tucson AZ. Each honoree received a check for $500 to further their college education; an engraved acrylic Plaque and a Certificate of Recognition. The honoree was
always invited to receive her presentation as our guest at our Annual Dinner Meeting at
the WIBC Convention site. Regardless of whether she was able to attend or not, Helen
never failed to be prepared to present her own special gift; always wrapped in Green Gift
Wrap…. Green being Helen’s favorite color! And, I would be very remiss if I failed to
mention that the plaque we presented….. was of pale green acrylic! That room was always
a happy and proud place to gather to pay tribute to Helen as well as what we were doing
to support our wonderful military through the BVL, while surrounded by all the colorful
table centerpieces of American Flags and Red, White, and Blue deco. Thanks, of course,
October 15, 2009
to the many board members and volunteers, some who would travel loaded down with
all of that deco!
Since that last gathering in 2006, the club’s activities have been at a “standstill” but…
.a lot has happened both in the bowling arena and the lives of many of our hard working
board members who believed in what they were doing and felt gratified all the way. But,
some of them have suffered setbacks due to ill health and in some cases may have had to
give up bowling and/or travel. And, I think you might agree that the “Face of Bowling”
has changed in most areas. But, that is to be expected…it’s a new era and I don’t have
a problem with that. And, of course, change is inevitable in the BEST OF ORGANIZATIONS. (Lord knows, I know, I’m a retiree from General Motors!) As has happened in a
lot of cases, those who date back to the 70’s and earlier and were active on the local and/
or state associations during many of those years, have just taken it upon themselves to
merely support their local/state organization without serving in the administrative capacities. Thus, not being a Delegate, as in my case, attending the National Conventions “is
a thing of the past”. But, not without the many, many fond memories of the friends we
have made along the way.
With all things considered after several months of communication back and forth, the
consensus of the Board of Directors of the HDBVLSC was that the organization be “dissolved” and our entire total assets be donated to the National BVL. My conversations
with Elizabeth Montonya, Director at the National BVL office, revealed their dire need
for funding to support their on-going projects such as Carpet Lane Bowling Kits to our
Military in the War Zone; The recreation program at Walter Reed Medical Center; The
“ReCreations” musical group; the four new Level One Polytrauma Units located in
Loma Linda CA; Minneapolis, MN; Richmond VA; and Tampa FL, who currently receive
and treat our most critically wounded veterans back on American soil; and of course, we
can’t forget the funding to VA Hospitals and aging WWII veterans in State Homes. So, in
a (bittersweet, yet) wonderful way to support BVL’s 67th year of supporting America’s
veterans, the officers and directors of the Helen Duval BVL Scholarship Club have proudly
posted the club’s final entry in the books….. Our donation of $10,930.95 to the National
BVL. And, when all is said and done…. We can truly look back and say…“BRAVO JOB WELL DONE”!

LAKEWOOD—Matt Garcia, of the Bowling Garcias
did it up good as he won his
first ABTA title in fine style
edging upstart Angela Lung
of the Bowling Lungs in the
title match 10th Frame at CAL
Bowl. Matt won from the top
seeded position for the win.
The scoring was semi
tough, but fair. Making the cut
were men +37 and the ladies
+21 to the semis and also added were Super Seniors Dodie
Sajonas, Ken Seiple Sr. and
Lonzell Burnett.
A good turnout of 179
bowlers ( 4 Squads) saw 49
Semifinalists take the floor, of
which, all would cash and the
top 16 to advance to the single
elim finals with 3 women min
guaranteed to the top 16.
The scoring was contentious with a young gentleman
from San Pedro, Matt Garcia
leading the way at +136. In second place, a pretty lady from
San Gabrie, Christina Cheung
at +92. Matt will sit out and
bowl for the title. Christina to
enter into the second round of
the top 16 finals. It took a +21
(men) and +13 with the 3 guaranteed women to make the top
16 Single Elims at CAL .
In the first round we had
Bernie Navarro, Art Lindsay, Josette Atangan, Michael
Wong, Danny Alcayde, Carlos
Vejar and Glen Matsumoto
lose out. They received checks
of $100 each in 10-16th places.
Round two had Kenny
Seiple Sr., Raul Aldaz, Steve
Dagel and Randy Folden fall
out and get checks of $110 in
6-9th places.
Round three got hot as Angela Lung downed Jun Cadenas 174-153. Christine Cheung
belted last weeks Champ Steve
Brode 227-187. Steve and Jub
were 4th and 5th with fine
bowling and $120 with two of
our regular gals Angela and
Christine to meet for the right
to bowl Garcia for the title.
The semi-final match was
on with two Mou Liu Friends
and ABTA regulars. And lets
say very pretty ladies also who
went at it. Anglela won with
fine bowling and also Christine had a few bad breaks but
she finished 3rd and bowled
so well. Angela was off to the
title game vs Matt Garcia.
The title game was on
and Angela led off in a big
way with a double. Matt then
struck and was clean with Angela opening on misses, spares
in frames 3 & 5. Matt finally
doubled in the 6-7 frames to
tie the match with the handicap. Both marked til Angela
had disaster leaving the 1-24-5-7-8 and couldn’t pick it
up. We went to the 10th and
Matt finished with a spare 8
for a 204/225 game. Angela
would need all three strikes to
tie the match. She got the first
one and then a split on the second finishing at 167/214 with
a great effort. Matt, a quiet
polite young man is now the
Champion, and a nice $1,000
(562) 868-7164
paycheck. A nice win by a very
nice guy. He is a quiet gentleman by nature but his Focus
Zone spoke loudly at CAL.
Great Bowling Matt!.
Great bowling by Angela
Lung who really performed
well at CAL and almost took
the title. She is a great Gal and
very Competitive. Great finish
Angela. Same goes for Christina Cheung who did so well.
Nice Bowling! Steve Brode
last weeks champion in back
to back finals and Jun Cadenas did very well also!
ABTA Notes: Tourney Hi
Qualifiers were Daniel Cha
+148 for the men and Cecilia
Lung led the ladies +66. They
will get paid entries for the
fine bowling.
The Doubles were headed by Jun Cadenas and Bart
Sanchez 1377 for $140. Jerry
Chang and Cecilia Lung 1369
$120. Som Seng and Tim Tran
1364 $110. Sophia Kim and
Daniel Cha1360 for $100. We
paid 16 places and $1,010 in

Bobby Campagnale
Leads Del Rosa
Scratch Bowlers
by Frank Weiler
SAN BERNARDINO—
After three weeks of bowling
in the 840 Scratch Classic
at Del Rosa Lanes BOBBY
CAMPAGNALE is averaging a whopping 249! His 297
game and 773 series also tops
the league. Campagnale was
last season’s top bowler in the
Citrus Belt with a 243 average.
Other bowlers doing well
include Adam Sokoloski (237
average), Will Kolbow (235),
Vernon Adams (234), Brian
Carmichael (231), Ron Moore
(229), Arrik Torres (227), Ray
Cobb (225), and Dave Wodka
(225).
The leagues leading ladies
are ALISHA HILL (218 average), PAULA VIDAD (217),
and BETH MENDOZA (200).
DEL ROSA LANES proprietor NICOLE ELLISON
said the league features a modified house shot, which translates to a modified sport shot.
This challenging shot attests to
the superior bowling skills of
the bowlers posting the averages listed above.
Ken Clay Tops

National Deaf Bowling News
by Connie Marchione
DeGroff Makes Two Headlines,
Blasts 290-300/846 At Jewel City Bowl
GLENDALE — I got an e-mail from Ken DeGroff asking me
to meet him at Mission Hills Bowl. I had to be there to take care of
a pre-bowled session of one team in my So. Calif. Deaf Traveling
League the day before the league scheduled to bowl there. Ken
said he finally broke his 5 years California jinx and showed me the
print out of the games he bowled last Thursday in Linda’s Vegas
League at Jewel City Bowl which are 290-256-300 and 846 series.
Congratulations to him for his honor scores.
For those who do not know Ken, the once traveling Kenneth
DeGroff holds the distinction of being the only hearing-impaired
bowler having bowled a 300 or more in each of 6 states in U.S. and
an 800 or more in 3 states. So he finally got an 800 in California.
His latest 300 is his career 24 and his 846 is his career 13th 800.
He never had so many years between 800s. Also, Ken is famously
known in USBC record books for his twice bowled back to back
300 games.
Looking at the printout between 1st and 2nd games, Ken had
bowled 18 straight strikes. He made 31 out of possible 36 strikes in
his 846. He used a new Gravity Energy ball drilled by Brandon
McGinnes at Jewel City Bowl and wants to thank him for the
best ever and good job drilling his ball. Ken added that he could
not believe that he came so close, within two pins of breaking the
Jewel City house record of 848.
DeGroff Blasts 272, Record 1006
In Deaf Travel At Mission Hills Bowl
MISSION HILLS — Ken DeGroff steam rolled on in So.
Calif. Deaf Traveling League’s stop at Mission Hills Bowl last
Sunday creating a new league series record 1006 with his 255268-214(737)-272. That is his third consecutive 900-plus series
in this league and his 1009 broke the old record of 1002 made by
Darrell Stogryn in 2005. DeGroff’s average in this 50th anniversary
league is now 241 for 12 games.
DeGroff’s latest feat led the league’s honor roll of 16 bowlers
with 3 of them making 800s. Darrell Stogryn hit all twos, 201236-216-210 for 863, followed by Bob Taylor with stepped up
games 158-189-231-244 for 822 and Ed Abakumoff with 195250-172-184 for 810. Albeit DeGroff has the high game 278, his
series counts first and Abakumoff’s latest 259 replaces his own
258, the season high game. Unpredictable Randy Salazar had a
poor 139 start that cost him an 800 as he closed with 229-190226 for 784.
The rest on the list were Robert Audette wih 220/755, Bob Jones
with 208/744, Jeff Stansell 220/740, Gardy Rodgers 204/724, Bob
Bergan 200/711, LeRoy MacMonagle 223/707. 200’s by Don
Millwee 216, Connie Marchione 206 and Francisco Navarro 203.
Abakumoff’s Riverside with his 259 and Salazar’s 229 helping
broke the league season high team game 767 with an 810. In the
next game MacMonagle’s Mid City fell short with Taylor’s 231
and Millwee’s 216 not getting enough help ending with a 779.
This 50th anniversary all deaf traveling league thanks Mission
Hills Bowl Manager Mario and his assistant Dave and the staff for
the great courtesy hosting us and excellent lane conditioning. We
hope to return with all full teams on the next trip in February.

TWO-HANDED BOWLER
JASON BELMONTE
TAKES HIS SHOW ON THE ROAD
ARLINGTON—Australia’s Jason Belmonte has gained
worldwide notoriety for his revolutionary two-handed bowling
style, and now, the 26-year-old will be showcasing his skills in
four cities across the United States as part of The Next Revolution, a United States Bowling Congress program.
The Next Revolution was created to give coaches and bowling fans a closer look at the unique two-handed style that is
sweeping the globe, while also giving participants a chance to
revolutionize their own games with help from some of the sport’s
biggest stars.
Belmonte, the 2008-09 Professional Bowlers Association
Rookie of the Year, will roll into Detroit (Oct. 31), Chicago
(Nov.1), Houston (Nov. 7) and Dallas (Nov. 8) for a series of
exhibitions and clinics and will be joined (one per location) by
Team USA members Kim Terrell-Kearney and Diandra Asbaty,
Colombian standout Clara Guerrero and PBA star Chris Barnes,
respectively.
Although the events may vary slightly, each will include onlane instruction, bowling ball demonstrations from ball manufacturers, a question and answer period and a chance to meet the
stars and get their autographs. The highlight of each event will be
a head-to-head match between Belmonte and his friends to determine once and for all if two hands are indeed better than one.
“Two-handed bowling is changing the look of the sport, and
Jason Belmonte is recognized across the world as one of the pioneers of this unique style,” said Pete Tredwell, USBC Vice President of Media. “The Next Revolution is our chance to spread
the word about this phenomenon and give bowlers and fans the
chance to see it first-hand and get up close and personal with
Jason.”
In the two-handed approach, the bowler swings the ball with
both hands through the whole approach up until the release point.
This style generates considerably more revolutions as the ball
rolls down the lane, resulting in increased pin action.
During his career, Belmonte has competed on six continents
and posted wins on four. He has bowled in more than 30 countries
and been named World Bowler of the Year on two occasions.
In his first year on the Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour, Belmonte became the first two-handed bowler to win a Tour event by
capturing The Bowling Foundation Long Island Classic.

Our Hearts were saddened last week by the loss of our
own Eva Munson. This gracious lady lost her long battle
with cancer. When Eva wasn’t able to finish out the league
last season, we knew she wasn’t well. Eva truly loved her
bowling and the bowlers. Eva had taken care of all the
league sheet service for Linbrook Bowl since 1988. She
was the league coordinator for all the Sr. leagues. She was
the Secretary of the Tuesday Sr. No Tap and the Thursday night 7-11 Vegas leagues. She was inducted into the
O.C.U.S.B.C. Hall of Fame in 2006. Eva handled her illness just like she did her bowling, with Class and Style
and was loved by everyone. She will truly be missed. Services will be held Sat. Oct. 17th at Forrest Lawn Cypress
at 12:30. There will be graveside services only. Daughter
Cheryl Munson will be holding a reception at Linbrook Bowl
after the service, around 2:00 PM. Our love and prayers go
out to Kenney, Cheryl, Johnny, and the entire Munson family. We’ll miss you “Little Eva”

Orange County Hall of Famer
Eva Munson
A Beloved longtime staff member, she worked and played here with us for over 22 years. A Texas girl raised
here in Southern California. She loved cherry muscle cars, motorcycles and cruising the boulevard, where she
met her sweetheart and husband, Kenny Munson. An avid reader, helpmate and best friend to most everyone
in her life, Eva was a strong and passionate competitor, a great colleague and friend.
She is survived by her husband, Kenny, her daughter, Cheryl and son, Ken Jr.
