Here Ye, Here Ye, the ASLMS Annual Conference is coming, the ASLMS Annual Conference is coming…to Boston April 3-7, 2013 December 2012 IN THIS ISSUE: Pg. 1-2- Annual Conference Pg. 16- Important Dates and Deadlines Pg. 16 -Membership Drive Pg. 20- New Members Message from the President and Program Chair George J. Hruza, M.D., M.B.A., President Thomas E. Rohrer, M.D., Program Chair Register Now for the 2013 ASLMS 33rd Annual Conference The 2013 ASLMS Annual Conference in Boston (April 3-7) promises to be an outstanding learning and networking opportunity that will allow our members to stay on top of all of the latest research findings and most useful clinical pearls! The dramatic surge in research and development in our field will be presented in the form of abstracts, clinical application courses, expert panels, controversy sessions, conversational experts in the exhibit hall talks, review courses, and cutting edge sessions to name a few. See how the latest groundbreaking research and techniques can be employed in the clinic. There is no other conference in the world that presents as much new information that you can put to use in your laser practice. One of the primary strengths of our Society is the diversity of its membership. The ASLMS Annual Conference is one of the very few conferences driven by a common technology rather than a common specialty. This allows for more cross-pollination from the variety of specialties involved and accelerates learning. Experts in one field learn about all of the exciting developments occurring in other fields and integrate them into their own research or clinical practice. Annual Conference Opportunities for Students/Residents/Fellows-in-Training Residents, students, and fellows will have significantly expanded opportunities at the upcoming conference. There will be a new course held on Sunday, April 7, specifically designed for residents and fellows that will take them from the basic science behind lasers to the most advanced techniques available today. There will also be a special lounge where students, residents, and fellows can congregate, relax, network, and listen to short presentations geared specifically for them. Registration for students, residents, and fellows is complimentary. Be sure to tell all of your residents and fellows about this must attend Join the Conversation on: event! 2013 ANNUAL CONFERENCE-Students/Residents Student/Resident Lounge Other Sessions/Events of Interest Friday, April 5, 2013 – 6:30 am – 5:00 pm 10:00 am – 10:30 am Meet the ASLMS President and Program Chair – George J. You could be selected to join the scientists, researchers and physicians who will present their work at the 33rd ASLMS Annual Conference. It’s the world’s most prestigious gathering of laser and related technology professionals. •Presenters’ work will appear in the internationally renowned ASLMS journal Lasers in Surgery and Medicine (LSM). •All accepted abstract presenters will be given the opportunity to submit an electronic poster (ePoster). Approximately 250 abstracts will be selected for oral presentations. 3 Guidelines for Review and Selection of Abstracts The Program Chairperson performs an initial review of all abstract submissions. The Program Chairperson may at his/her discretion, re-categorize the abstracts. Abstracts are then submitted to the individual Section Chairpersons who review, rank, and select abstracts for presentation at the Annual Conference. Given the brevity of the abstracts, the Program and Section Chairpersons realize that the detail level obtained through this process cannot achieve the level of a full article in a peer-reviewed journal. However, the spirit of this Annual Conference is that full disclosure (regarding conflicts of interest as well as details in methodology) will be expected and must be provided at the time of presentation. Abstracts that cannot meet these requirements due to intellectual property concerns, or withhold vital methodology specifics do not represent the spirit and intent of the Annual Conference and should not be submitted as they do not meet the criteria for acceptance. The Section Chairpersons also take into consideration the following criteria when reviewing abstracts: •Abstracts must not have been published or presented previously (clinical series updates are an exception to this stipulation). • ASLMS recognizes plagiarism, including self-plagiarism as a serious problem. All abstracts submitted to the Annual Conference and all manuscripts submitted to Lasers in Surgery and Medicine will be submitted to evaluation by iThenticate (or similar) software in an effort to verify the originality of the works. The software package is used to verify content has not been plagiarized and cross references published matter against the submission. • ALL scientific research referred to, reported on, or used in the abstract must conform to the generally accepted standards of experimental design, data collection, and analysis. •Selection of abstracts for presentation will be limited to those abstracts that report already collected data. Abstracts must contain tangible factual information and should accurately reflect work that has actually been performed. Statements such as “results will be discussed’ are unacceptable. •The number of patients in the study will be taken into consideration. Scientific, well-designed studies are given preference over anecdotal findings or single experiment or case. With rare exception, abstracts that present a single or a small number of cases should not be accepted for paper presentation, but may be appropriate for ePoster consideration. •Abstracts must be of high quality and be presented with no bias toward a specific company(ies). •Recommendations in the abstract involving clinical medicine must be based on evidence that is accepted within the profession of medicine as adequate justification for their indications and contraindications in the care of patients. •The abstract must not present recommendations, treatment, or manners of practicing medicine that are not within the definitions as noted above, are known to have risks or dangers that outweigh the benefits, or are known to be ineffective in the treatment of patients. •Each author of an abstract submitted to ASLMS must have made a significant contribution to the research and must assume responsibility for the content of the abstract. •The number of abstracts submitted by an individual and/or institution will be taken into consideration. In order to provide diversity of input, we discourage any one author making more than two presentations in a session. The other submissions could be submitted for the ePoster session. •The purpose of our conference is to disseminate accurate, balanced and objective information regarding lasers, other optical sources and related technologies in medicine and surgery. This purpose is best served by including presentations that are varied in terms of topics and presenters. •Abstracts should feature category-specific data with the expectation of full disclosure regarding methods and materials. • Full disclosure of Conflict of Interest (COI) is expected and required of ALL authors and co-authors. 4 A Keynote Lecture You Won’t Want to Miss! Dr. Robert S. Langer is a David H. Koch Institute Professor (there are 14 Institute Professors at MIT; being an Institute Professor is the highest honor that can be awarded to a faculty member). The 2012 ASLMS Research Grants were funded by net proceeds received from the Silent Auction held at the 2011 Annual Conference, Industry Advisory Council memberships, and member research contributions. 2012 Student Research Grant Recipients Timothy M. Baran, B.S. University of Rochester – Institute of Optics, Rochester, NY Baharak Bahmani, B.S., M.S. University of California, Riverside, CA Supporting ASLMS Member Thomas H. Foster, Ph.D. Supporting ASLMS Member Jennifer K. Barton, Ph.D. “Determination of Doxorubicin Concentration in TACE Treatment of Primary Liver Cancers by Fluorescence Spectroscopy” Intra-tumor drug concentration can have a large effect on the outcome of the therapy. In previous studies, doxorubicin concentration in systemic circulation was measured. However, the concentration in the tumor was not measured. We propose to study this intra-tumor drug concentration directly by use of fluorescence spectroscopy, since doxorubicin is fluorescent. “Laser-Mediated Photothermal Destruction of Ovarian Cancer Cells using ICG-loaded Nanocapsules Functionalized with Anti-HER2” As a first step to determine the efficacy of ICG-NCs for photothermal destruction of peritoneal ovarian cancer cells, the project is aimed at functionalizing ICG-NCs to target and thermally destroy cancer cells in-vitro. Specifically, due to over-expression of Human Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor 2 (HER-2), ICG-NCs will be functionalized with anti-HER2. Successful outcomes of these experiments will provide the proof-of-concept data to further pursue ICG-NCs for imaging and photothermal destruction of peritoneal ovarian cancer in animal models, and ultimately in patients. Scott M. Thompson, B.A. Mayo Clinic Rochester, MN Supporting ASLMS Member Roger J. McNichols, Ph.D. Richa Mittal, B.E., M.S. Finally, I believe the annual ASLMS conference is a great forum to showcase my work to a multidisciplinary audience which includes students, scientists, clinicians, and industry representatives.” - Adam Boretsky, Student Research Grant Recipient. 12 2012 Research Grant Recipients Giuliano Scarcelli, Ph.D. Massachusetts General Hospital Wellman Center for Photomedicine Cambridge, MA ASLMS Policy on Mechanism to Identify and Resolve Conflict of Interest Supporting ASLMS Member R. Rox Anderson, M.D. The American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME). This accreditation is important for our organization and members. To achieve and maintain this accreditation, the ASLMS implemented a process for meeting the ACCME’s Criteria for providing continuing medical education at the highest standard. A Pilot Study to Identify “At-Risk” Subjects for PostLASIK Ectasia Using Brillouin Microscopy The biomechanical properties of the cornea are essential for its function. Corneal collagen fibers provide the mechanical strength to withstand the intraocular pressure; if corneal tissue becomes abnormally weak, corneal ectasia (i.e. thinning and bulging) ensues, causing severe vision degradation. Abnormal weakening of the cornea is a dreaded complication of LASIK surgery. When clinical symptoms manifest, corneal ectasia is often at an advanced stage that leads to corneal transplant. If inherent corneal weakness were detected early, at-risk subjects could be consulted to avoid LASIK surgery; however, current clinical instruments only provide morphological information. This proposal addresses this need through Brillouin microscopy, a novel imaging technology that maps the elastic modulus of material without contact and with 3D resolution. The central hypothesis of the proposal is that low Brillouin elastic modulus is a predictor of postLASIK ectasia. A pilot clinical study will be performed to compare normal, post-LASIK normal and post-LASIK ectasia corneas in vivo. Introducing elasticity-based risk factors is likely to change the current paradigm for LASIK pre-operative screenings and enable proper identification of at-risk candidates. As part of this process, every person who is in a position to control the content of an ASLMSsponsored education activity must disclose all financial relationships with any commercial interests. If such a financial relationship presents a conflict of interest or the appearance of a conflict of interest, the conflict will need to be resolved prior to continued involvement. If a presenter declines to disclose all financial relationships, they will be disqualified from being a part of the planning and implementation of the CME activity. ASLMS Disclosure of Interest Guidelines To comply with ACCME Standards as well as with FDA regulations, the ASLMS requires: •Written and verbal disclosure of all financial interests or benefits presenters received within the last 12 months, and that no presentations are made with the appearance of a conflict of interest. If any conflict develops from the time presenters submit a disclosure form to the time of the CME activity, they must notify the ASLMS in writing and disclose the conflict. Wenbin Tan, Ph.D. University of California/Beckman Laser Institute Irvine, CA Supporting ASLMS Member J. Stuart Nelson, M.D., Ph.D. •Written and verbal disclosure of any off-label uses of drugs or devices. “Molecular Mechanism of Photochemotherapy on Port Wine Stain Disease” The proposed research will focus on targeting the clinical barrier that appears to diminish PWS laser therapeutic outcome, namely reformation and reperfusion of PWS blood vessels after PDL treatment. A series of pharmacological, molecular and biochemical approaches are proposed herein to support this novel approach for PWS treatment: (1) the safety, efficacy and pharmacokinetics of newly developed topical formulations of RPM and (2) the time course of RPM-mediated inhibition on angiogenesis pathways induced by PDL. We expect the proposed studies will advance our understanding of molecular pathophysiology of PWS and improve response to PDL treatment. •FDA approval is specific regarding approved uses and labeling of drugs and devices. The presenter must disclose whether or not the device or treatment is approved by the FDA or whether it is considered to be investigational. The presenter must also fully disclose any off-label use of devices, drugs or other materials that constitute the subject of the presentation. 13 ASLMS Research Grant Application Guidelines for Students and Non-Students Grant Deadline: January 7, 2013 (11:59 p.m., CST) Introduction The American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery (ASLMS) supports research projects designed to foster the development and use of lasers and other related technologies in medical and surgical applications. Pozner, M.D. Member Since 1995 In terms of advancing unbiased research in new lasers and new laser applications, ASLMS is in a unique position. I have been committed to ASLMS for well over a decade and I understand the importance of research in maintaining the vitality of an organization. That is why I am an ardent supporter of the ASLMS research fund. The primary way for our organization to advance its standing in the medical community and to maintain leadership in lasers is to fund research. In particular, ASLMS needs to engage and fund young investigators and embrace new concepts in laser science. I urge all ASLMS members to become supporters and increase contributions to this critical undertaking. We need to encourage young (and old) investigators to help develop new technology and to show our colleagues and the public good solid evidence of the efficacy of our existing lasers and devices. The best way I can think of to accomplish this is to contribute to the ASLMS research fund. Testimonial “I am very excited to receive the research grant from American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery (ASLMS). This is the first funding I have received and it accelerates the transition for me to become an independent researcher.
