Introduction
Avaya’s Ethernet Switch product line provides complete coverage, ranging from entry-level
branch office, to high-performance wiring closet and data center server aggregation,
through to network core applications.
This Quick Reference Guide is provided for the Avaya and Business Partner sales
community, providing summary information, in one consolidated document, focusing on
the strategic products from Avaya’s Ethernet Switching portfolio.
Customer Drivers & Challenges
It is predicted that the Enterprise market will be shaped by a need to plan for and
incorporate key information technology drivers1:
 Redefining Network Intelligence – moving from ‘dumb pipes’ to ‘smart pipes’ with
intelligence defined in the software associated with applications; a decoupling or
abstraction of ‘service’ from ‘boxes’.
 Delivering Automation – a ‘Data Center Fabric’ that has the ability to converge
application and storage traffic, a ‘Network Fabric’ that flattens and meshes the network
for fewer ties with embedded functions; the next wave of investment will be on the ‘Endto-End Fabric’ that extends across the entire enterprise (e.g. Avaya’s Fabric Connect).
 Revisiting Mobility – with consumerization of devices driving new expectations into the
enterprise (the BYOD trend), and the ‘mobile’ tag expands to include nomadic (Wi-Fi),
mobile (3G), and remote (i.e. Branch Office); security and policy enforcement are critical
as the network is the first and last enterprise demarcation point.
With one eye on these corporate drivers, the Enterprise CIO of today is facing an evolving
set of challenges, with the top five being:

 Business continuity and disaster recovery

This shows that there has been a fundamental transition to business-orientated delivery

Avaya’s premium modular, chassis-based solution for the large Data Center and very large
Enterprise Campus Core. Delivering the highest levels of performance and scalable software
features, the VSP 9000 is the strategic platform for Customers whose business is reliant upon a
highly resiliency Data Center.
The latest release – VOSS 3.4 – introduces the new 9010 10-slot Chassis alternative, specifically
developed for environments with demanding airflow requirements.

Virtual Services Platform 8000 Series
The VSP 8000 Series is new category of high-performance Ethernet Switches developed by Avaya
to leverage the latest generation of highly integrated ASICs which, when combined with the Virtual
Services Platform Operating System, deliver our Partners and Customers the ‘Avaya advantage’ i.e.
a cost-effective, fully featured, flexible, and simple to operate network solution.
The Virtual Services Platform 8284XSQ is the first product in the VSP 8000 Series and is a compact,
fixed form-factor Switch designed to effortlessly satisfy mainstream Campus Core Switch
requirements.
The VSP 8000 Series of Ethernet Switches will launch with the VSP 8284XSQ and VOSS 4.0
software.

Virtual Services Platform 7000 Series
The VSP 7000 is Avaya’s energy and space-efficient platform built around a next-generation
chipset, delivering wire-speed 10Gbps Ethernet connectivity for today’s Data Center Top-of-Rack
requirements. In addition it is future-ready with the ability to flexibly support 100Gbps Ethernet,
Storage convergence, and has been built to support network‑wide fabric-based virtualized
services and lossless environments; it features the unique Distributed Top-of-Rack capability.
Capabilities introduced in 10.3.x include the ability to concurrently support the likes of Fabric
Connect and Switch Cluster, the ability to support dynamic IP Routing over the Switch Cluster, and
a number of other operability enhancements. Additionally, the 7024XT and 7002QQ hardware has
been introduced, and all features are now included in the Base License, and the former Advanced
and Premier Software Licenses are now obsolete.
Typical Configuration: Switch with dual AC or DC Power Supplies, and possibly also an MDA. Orderable in either Front-to-Back or

Virtual Services Platform 4000 Series
The VSP 4000 is the industry’s first Fabric-enabled multi-service/multi-tenant edge device,
delivering Avaya’s Fabric Connect capabilities on a low-cost access platform that can be used to

Redundant Power Supply 15
The RPS 15 is a standalone, rack-mountable solution that provides scalable power redundancy to
non-PWR Stackable Chassis Switches and supplementary PoE power for PWR models. It converts
an AC Supply, perferrably an alternate supply from the primary source, into a DC input on the
Switch.
Typical Configuration: RPS 15 Chassis (includes Rack Mount Kit, etc), at least one Power Module (usually two or more) & Power
Cord. Add RPS Cables as required, and any necessary DC-to-DC Converters (ERS 4500 non-PWR & 5510, & also ES 470).

Power Cords & Power Cord Ordering
Most products utilize the standard ‘C13’ type cords, which are ordered as per the standard
procedure of replacing the seventh character of the Order Code to indicate the appropriate
Country; please refer to the table at the end of this section.
The ERS 5600 field-replaceable AC Power Supplies use ‘C15’ type cords. This applies both to
complete Switches and any additional AC Power Supplies. This is also the case for the new ERS
4500-PWR+, ERS 4800, VSP 4000, and 8000 models.
Separate Power Cords, the ‘C19’ type, are orderable for the 8005AC Power Supplies, and the
8004AC (which utilize the standard ‘C13’ type).
A different type of ‘C19’ cord is used with the VSP 9000, and these have a straight orientation.
