ITEA MISSION STATEMENT
The International Tuba-Euphonium Association is a worldwide
organization of musicians whose purpose is to maintain a liaison
tuba and euphonium family - their development, literature, pedagogy,
and performance
The objectives are:
•To expand performance and employment opportunities
•To enhance the image and role of our instruments and
performers
•To explore pedagogical approaches through new teaching
resources
•To promote activity in new instrument design
•To generate new compositions for the tuba and euphonium
•To explore new directions in technique
•To establish and maintain appropriate libraries of recorded and
printed materials
•To encourage tuba-euphonium workshops and conferences
•To publish a journal
•To maintain a publishing company

The 282ND
ARMY BAND TUBAEUPHONIUM QUARTET is tailored to deliver
a world class professional musical product in venues
ranging from small group settings to concert halls This
dynamic performing ensemble’s library includes works
from renaissance to contemporary styles, popular
marches, and patriotic crowd pleasers The ensemble
has an extensive repertoire and performs for a variety of musical venues In
addition to supporting a wide variety of military ceremonies and evening social
events, the Tuba-Euphonium Quartet performs concerts in the community The
quartet is a prime example of the Army’s ability to enrich a community through
musical activities
JEFF BARBEE is a doctoral student at the
University of Missouri-Kansas City He has participated
in many conferences and competitions including
winning the 2014 Missouri Music teachers Association
solo competition (graduate brass division), second
place in the 2013 Great Plains Regional solo euphonium
competition, Second place 2013 MTNA Missouri
Regional chamber competition as well as many others
Jeff graduated with his bachelors in music education
(2009) and music performance (2009) from the
University of Kentucky He went on to earn master
degrees in both music performance (2012) and brass pedagogy (2012) Part of

eleventh year as Assistant Professor of Music at

active and diverse career as a soloist, educator, and
chamber musician He is currently Instructor of Music at
Columbus State University and the University of
Alabama-Birmingham, and will join the faculty of

previously taught at the University of Montevallo and
the University of West Georgia His experiences have
taken him across the United States and abroad As a

was born in southern California and during his early
career was an active free-lance musician in Los Angeles

Orchestra, and also performed extra with the Los
Angeles Master Chorale, the Los Angeles Civic Light
Opera and the Los Angeles Philharmonic During college
Ron and three of his friends formed “The Tubadours”, a

Ohio-based tuba player AARON HYNDS has
been performing across the Midwest since 2003 He is
the recipient of music degrees from the University of
Northern Iowa and the University of Wisconsin-Madison,

Distinguished Graduate Fellow Over the past few years,
he has given recitals and performed as a featured soloist
on several occasions, always with an emphasis on
contemporary music He has recently commissioned
several composers to write new works for the tuba, with

International Tuba-Euphonium Conferences and the
Tennessee Governor’s School for the Arts He has

Professor of Tuba/Euphonium at Young Harris College
A native of Western Washington, he earned a Bachelor
of Music degree in tuba performance at the University
of Southern California, Masters of Music degrees in both
tuba and chamber music performance at the University
of Michigan, and a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from
the University of Georgia His principal instructors
include Jim Self, Norman Pearson, Fritz Kaenzig, David
Zerkel, and Warren Deck David has experienced much
success as a soloist, winning 1st prize in several national
and international solo competitions, including: the 2010 International TubaEuphonium Conference Artist Tuba solo competition, the 2012 Falcone Festival

CHRIS ROUSH’S love for repair started in high
school He started working at M&M music in Valdosta,
GA accepting an apprenticeship to learn repair from
Frank Kilgard The goal was to learn enough to
supplement being a band director After high school,
Chris started his Bachelor’s in Music Education (tuba
‘99) from Tennessee Technological University studying
under Winston Morris While at Tech, Chris was
fortunate to continue his repair studies working for the
Music Department to help maintain the school’s
instruments Upon completion, Chris and his wife
(Karesa) moved to Michigan for her to continue her studies at the University of
tech at Carty’s Music (Ypsilanti) One year later, he was offered a repair position
with Marshall Music (Lansing) Chris worked for Marshall Music for 14 years, 8 of
which as the Director of Repair Services coordinating 31 repair techs over 7
locations completing 41,000 repairs a year Pearl Corporation (Pearl Flutes &
Adams Marching Brass) in Nashville, TN is where Chris currently calls home
Chris has given clinics and masterclasses over the years for secondary schools,
universities, and the MWRTEC conference in 2011 Chris also was the Principle

DAVID ZERKEL is Professor of Tuba and
Euphonium at the University of Georgia His students
have distinguished themselves by winning international
and national competitions and attaining positions with
professional performing organizations David has
performed with many orchestras, to include the
Philadelphia Orchestra, Chicago Symphony, New York
Philharmonic, Atlanta Symphony, National Symphony,
Baltimore Symphony and the Kennedy Center Opera
House Orchestra He is also a proud member of the
Brass Band of Battle Creek He began his performing
career as a member of the United States Army Field Band and The United States
Army Band, both located in Washington, DC David has performed as a

is comprised of undergraduate tuba and
euphonium majors, minors, and alumni of
direction of Jimmie Self, and performs in
recital on campus and in the community

HENDERSON STATE UNIVERSITY TUBA EUPHONIUM
CHOIR consists of undergraduate tuba and euphonium majors, minors, and
enthusiasts In its short history, the ensemble has performed at conferences
throughout Louisiana, Texas and Arkansas, as well as in Washington DC
at the 2012 US Army Band Tuba/Euphonium Conference The HSU Tuba
Choir performs at least one full concert every semester, frequently features
student conductors, and is often represented by a tuba quartet at smaller
recitals Henderson State University, “The School with a Heart,” offers quality
undergraduate and graduate education to a diverse student body As Arkansas’s

Ensemble is arranged in house by Chris Hosmer Chris Hosmer has been
teaching tuba and euphonium at Jax State since 1996 He also teaches
Technology of Music, Introduction to Music, and directed the JSU Chamber
Orchestra for 3 years He performs regularly with the Rome (GA) Symphony
Orchestra, the Gadsden Symphony Orchestra and the JSU Faculty Brass Quintet
In addition, he has performed with the Terre Haute Symphony Orchestra and the

in New Orleans to the Spoleto Festival in Charleston to the Kennedy Center in
Washington, DC and is responsible for the composition and arrangement of
more music for the tuba than any other single source Founded in 1967 by R
tuba ensemble performance practices and have inspired the formation of like
groups all over the world The subject of several doctoral dissertations, the TTTE
most recently enjoyed wide-spread exposure via a nationally broadcast PBS
documentary titled TUBA U: Basso Profundo and the publication by Scarecrow
Press of “The Tennessee Tech Tuba Ensemble and R Winston Morris: a 40th
Anniversary Retrospective” by Charles McAdams and Richard Perry
The TENNESSEE TECH TUBA OCTET is made up of select
members of the Tennessee Tech Tuba Ensemble The group is conducted by
the Tuba Graduate Assistant, Ryan Snell The purpose of the Octet is to provide
an additional ensemble in the tuba/euphonium studio in order to cover more
repertoire and as a vehicle to feature individual members in a solo capacity
Additional personnel are utilized depending on the requirements of the music to
be performed

The Tuba Euphonium Ensemble at the
UNIVERSITY OF NORTH
CAROLINA AT PEMBROKE was
founded in 2007, and has since performed
across campus and throughout the region
Directed by Dr Joanna Ross Hersey, the
ensemble is made up of students earning
Music Business and Music Performance UNC Pembroke is located in the
Sandhills region of southern North Carolina, an area of sandy soil, Longleaf Pine
and diverse wildlife Situated at the midpoint between Boston and Miami, close
to the coastline and to the Appalachian Mountains, UNC Pembroke is home to
7,000 students and to the ‘Spirit of the Carolinas’ Marching Band The UNCP
Tuba Euphonium Ensemble presents Octubafest, TubaChristmas, and other
events on campus each year, including providing accompaniment to the annual
Holiday Tree Lighting ceremony The ensemble has worked with tuba
euphonium and brass performance artists from across the world, including
Oystein Baadsvik, Demondrae Thurman, Gail Robertson, Dennis Askew, Danny
Vinson, Tom Holtz, Chris Quade, Andrew Hitz, Lance LaDuke, Stacy Baker,
JoAnn Lamolino and more The UNCP Tuba Euphonium Ensemble recently
presented a recital in Jacksonville, Florida at the Southeast Tuba Euphonium
Conference held at the University of North Florida Graduates of the ensemble
are now out teaching a new generation of students to love the tuba and
euphonium!
The UNCG TUBABAND is a very
active ensemble in the Greensboro, NC area
Each year the group plays host to an
OctubaFest, and a SpringTubafest
Members of the group perform often at area
schools and churches, typically as quartets
Additionally, its members have fared well
through the years in various solo and
quartet competitions Originally formed in the mid 1970’s by David Lewis,
current tubist in the North Carolina Symphony, and currently under the direction
of Dennis AsKew, (since 1992) the group has performed at the International
Tuba/Euphonium conferences in 1995, (Northwestern University) 1997,(Riva del
Garda, Italy), 1998 (Minneapolis, MN), 2000, (Regina, Saskatchewan), 2002
(hosted in Greensboro), 2008 (Cincinnati, OH), 2014 (Indiana University) the
1999 TubaMania Conference in Sydney, Australia, 11 times at the Southeast
Regional Tuba Euphonium Conference, and 4 times at the United States Army

YI-CHING CHEN was born in Taipei, Taiwan in 1987, and began playing
piano and tuba at the age of four and nine respectively She studied with Mr
Fu-Hsuan Duan, principal tuba of National Symphony Orchestra (Taiwan), from
2000 to 2006 As a young tuba soloist, she won many awards including 1st
Prize for Solo Tuba in the National Taiwan Music Competition as the youngest
participant (2003 & 2005), 1st Prize in the Low Brass Solo Competition held by
Hsing-Tien Temple, Taiwan (2005), and 2nd Prize in the International Women
Markneukirchen International Tuba Competition in Germany, and the 2012
International Jeju Brass Competition in South Korea Yi-Ching holds both a
Bachelor of Music in Tuba Performance and a Bachelor of Arts in History from
Bard College Conservatory of Music, where she studied with Mr Alan Baer from
2007 to 2012 As a student of Prof Fritz Kaenzig, she is currently pursuing her
Doctor of Musical Arts degree at University of Michigan, where she received
Master of Music degree in 2014
CODY DAILEY is a senior music education major at Tennessee Tech
University where he studies euphonium with R Winston Morris As a high
school student, he studied privately with Brandon Jones He also attended the
Governors School for the Arts in 2010 In 2011 he was co-principle trombonist
with the Curb youth symphony in Nashville under Dr Carol Nies Since coming
to TTU, Cody has performed as principal euphoniumist in nearly every large
ensemble, including the prestigious Tennessee Tech Tuba Ensemble, with
whom he has participated in numerous tours and performances from Carnegie
hall to the University of Florida An active chamber musician, composer, and
soloist, he has performed for three years with “Tuphonium”, a tuba quartet
consisting of Tennessee Tech students With this group, Cody won the chamber
competition Cody plans to graduate in December and continue studying
euphonium in a masters program with a concentration on performance
STEVE DARLING (b 1989) a native of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, has
been an active soloist and composer Steve received a B A in Music from the
University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in 2013 and is currently pursuing a M M in
Euphonium Performance/Brass Pedagogy from Ohio University Throughout
his young career Steve has enjoyed success in a variety of international and
local competitions At the 2014 International Tuba Euphonium Conference
in Bloomington Indiana, Steve received 2nd place in the Euphonium Artist
Competition Steve also won the 2014 Ohio University Concerto Competition and
will perform with the Ohio University Wind Symphony in April 2015, becoming

euphonium ensemble was premiered at the 2014 ITEC in Bloomington, Indiana
by the Ohio University Tuba-Euphonium Ensemble under the director of Dr
Jason Smith and was subsequently published by Potenza in November of the
same year Mr Darling’s work Vertigo for trombone ensemble will be premiered
by the Ohio University Trombone Choir under the direction of Dr Lucas Rego
Borgas in the spring of 2015 Steve’s principal teachers have included Mark
Hoelscher, Marty Erickson, Matthew Gaunt, Timothy Northcut, and Jason Smith
Steve would like to dedicate this performance to his teachers, family, and friends
NOLAN DERRICK is currently a student at Tennessee Technological
University in Cookeville, Tennessee and is studying with R Winston Morris He
lives in Church Hill, TN where he attended Volunteer High school Nolan also
took lessons from Jimmy Self, former tuba and euphonium professor at East
Tennessee State University, prior to attending TTU
ZACK GRASS received his Bachelor of Music in Tuba Performance from
the Indiana University of Pennsylvania with Dr Zach Collins and is currently
pursuing his Master of Music in Tuba Performance with Professor Tom McCaslin
At East Carolina, Zack is a teaching assistant with the East Carolina Marching
Pirates and Pep Band and is active in arranging, conducting, and teaching
lessons to the members of the ensemble Zack is also an active jazz musician
and, in addition to running one of the university jazz combos, has done arranging
and performing with small groups throughout the keystone area Outside of
university ensembles, Zack has also performed as a tubist with the Keystone
Wind Ensemble, Butler Symphony Orchestra, Hoodlebug Brass Quintet, Hershey
Park Chocolate Covered Band, the Craig Fraedrich Big Band at the National Jazz
Workshop, and the Hagerstown Municipal Band where he was a featured soloist
during their 100th season Zack has also been on staff for local marching band
programs and has done a number of group master classes in North Carolina,
Pennslyvania, and Maryland
DR. MATT HIGHTOWER is an adjunct professor of tuba at Murray
State University Prior to teaching at Murray State, Dr Hightower was the tuba
teaching assistant at The University of Texas at Austin, where he performed
with the graduate brass quintet and taught applied tuba and euphonium lessons
to undergraduate music majors and minors Dr Hightower has performed
with The Bloomington Camerata Orchestra, The Columbus (IN) Symphony,
The Evansville Philharmonic, The Jackson Symphony (TN), The Victoria

Symphony (TX), and David Baker’s 20th Century BeBop Band As a soloist, Dr
and Euphonium Conference competitions and was the 2013 silver medalist in the
tuba artist division of the Leonard Falcone International Tuba and Euphonium
Festival Competition In addition to performing, Dr Hightower is an award
winning composer In 2010 Dr Hightower was named the winner of the KMEA
Intercollegiate Composition Contest Recent performances of Mr Hightower’s
work include the premier of his “Concerto for Tuba” by Nimrod Ron, Principal
Tuba of the Iceland Symphony Orchestra and an arrangement performed by
the low brass section of the Brass Band of Battle Creek Dr Hightower is also
a composer for Fannin Musical Productions, where he composes and arranges
music for high school bands across the country Dr Hightower’s primary tuba
teachers include Ray Conklin, Daniel Perantoni, and Charles Villarrubia Dr
Hightower has also studied composition with Mike D’Ambrosio, John Fannin, and
PQ Phan
JOHN LEIBENSPERGER graduated summa cum laude from both
Temple Universtiy (MM) and Georgia State Unversity (BM) with degrees in
tuba performance As a tuba player, John has performed with the Atlanta
Symphony Orchestra, Reading POPS, South East Pennsylvania Symphony
Orchestra, and has won multiple solo and concerto competitions as well as
placing second in the 2013 North East Regional Tuba Euphonium Conference
mock orchestral audition His awards include the Theodore Presser Scholarship,
Anna Vincent Scholarship, Hughes Scholarship, Corenti Norcott Scholarship,
Crosby Instrumental award, and the Temple University Academic Internship His
festival participation includes the Pokorny Low Brass Seminar, Bar Harbor Brass
Festival, International Euphonium Institute, and the Sewanee Summer Music
Festival This coming March, John will be featured as the Celebrity Lecturer for
the Philadelphia Orchestra’s Lecture-Luncheon As a teacher, John founded and
director the CMSP Youth Wind Ensemble in Philadelphia and created a low brass
studio for the El Sistema based Play On, Philly! organization From 2011 until 2014
he worked as a conducting assistant at Tenth Presbyterian church His primary
teachers include Carol Jantsch, Jay Krush, Michael Moore, and Eric Bubacz John
is currently an Artist Diploma Student at the Yale School of Music where he also
teaches secondary and undergraduate tuba and euphonium lessons
JOSH MABERRY is a junior music education major at Tennessee Tech
University and studies under R Winston Morris Josh’s hometown is Oak Ridge,

JULIAN CALVIN has worked in various capacities as a collaborative
pianist, rehearsal accompanist for musical theatre productions, church musician,
and in chamber music and contemporary ensemble performances His piano
trio, the Avalon Trio, received third place in the MTNA National Competition
in 2012 Shortly thereafter, the Avalon Trio was invited to the Orvieto Musica
festival in Italy as the ensemble in residence Julian received his Bachelor’s
degree in piano performance at Lipscomb University under Dr Jerome Reed,
and he is currently pursuing a Masters from the University of Tennessee under
Dr David Northington In addition to working as an accompanist for the
University of Tennessee School of Music, he has also begun working as the
pianist and organist at the First Christian Church in Rockwood, TN
EILEEN DOWNEY received a Bachelor’s degree
in Piano Performance and a Master’s Degree in
Collaborative Piano from Michigan State University She
is currently Lecturer of Piano at the University of
Tennessee-Knoxville, where she is a vocal coach and
collaborative pianist, as well as a rehearsal pianist for
Knoxville Opera Ms Downey has been an accompanist
for the Middle/East Tennessee Metropolitan Opera
National Council Auditions since 2012, and was recently
a guest artist of the Tennessee Cello Workshop She
spent the summer seasons of 2013-14 at the Brevard
Music Center as chorus master and vocal coach for the Janiec Opera Company
Ms Downey was previously a member of the adjunct faculty at Texas Wesleyan
University in Fort Worth, TX, where she also frequently collaborated with the
Texas Christian University School of Music She is an alumna of the Merola
Opera Program, and was one of the 2011 staff accompanists for AIMS in Graz
Other programs in which she has been involved include SongFest, Project
Canción Española, Aspen Opera Theater Center, Opera North, and the Opera

A native of Osaka, Japan, pianist EMI KAGAWA
has been active as both a soloist and a chamber
musician, and has performed extensively throughout the
United States, Canada, Italy, and Japan The Salt Lake
Tribune described her performance as “a picture in the
form of a 1,000 piece puzzle, with each piece being a
master piece” The New York Sun noted Ms Kagawa as
“…an artist both interesting and bold who quite literally
throws herself into her performance creating truly
exciting music” With her innovative approach as an
artist and as a co-director of MANI Brooklyn Chamber
Music, Ms Kagawa has participated in the world premieres of composers of our
time, and she collaborated in a number of productions involving a variety of
performance includes Knoxville Symphony Orchestra chamber music series,
Concertmaster Chamber Music Series of Symphony of the Mountains, the Oak
Ridge Civic Music Association’s Isotone Concert Series, the Steinway Society of
Knoxville Piano Concert Series, the International Women’s Brass Conference, and
Chamber Music Concert Series of the Musicians of Lenox Hill in New York A
dedicated educator, Ms Kagawa is currently on the piano faculty of St Joseph
University in Philadelphia, PA, New York Summer Music Festival and has served
on the faculties of New York University, New York Youth Symphony Chamber
Music Program, the Perlman Music Program, the Great Neck Conservatory, the
Piano School of NYC, the New York Summer Festival, and the Belvoir Arts Camp
BERNADETTE LO joined the University of the
South Department of Music in 2011 Prior to Sewanee,
she was the staff pianist of Western Illinois University in
Macomb, Illinois Dr Lo received her Bachelor of Music
and Master of Music from Peabody Institute of the
Johns Hopkins University and Doctor of Musical Arts
from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in
2004 She is currently Visiting Professor of Piano and
has given numerous recitals at Sewanee and around
USA Dr Lo also serves on the faculty for Viola Winter
Intensive in both Columbus, Ohio and Greenville, South
Carolina, and joined AIMS as a staff pianist in 2013
