The need for speed
Shop owner is also weekend racer

Morning News — Leslie Sieger
Matt Sorensen of Blackfoot works his magic with spray
paints at the Eastern Idaho State Fair Sunday. Sorensen has
been creating his can art since he was 16. Sorensen can
be seen at his booth across from the 4-H building inside
the fairgrounds Throughout the week of the fair. Check the
schedule for times through out the day.
BLACKFOOT — When
people see Dan Hatch
they may recognize him
as the owner of the “Lube
Shop” in Blackfoot. He
spends his weekdays in
the safe indoors helping
customers and servicing cars. But when the
weekends roll around, he
becomes a race car driver.
The best part is, he has
the trophies and fan club
to prove it.
When it comes to being
fast and fearless, nothing
holds him back. Hatch
has competed in almost
800 races and has won
several
championship
titles including the Limited
Stock Class Champ in
Pocatello for the past two
years and the 2012 Street
Stock Championship in
Atomic City.
Hatch first became
interested in car racing
when he was eight years
old. He lived about a quarter of a mile away from the
old race track in Blackfoot.
“I remember sitting on
my patio and listening
to the cars as they drove
around the raceway,”
said Hatch. He became
involved with the events
when he got a job passing
out programs and cleaning the stands. It wasn’t

job may be finished in

Greg Schuelke is the

with the contract in Firth.”
Both aerial cable and
underground conduit is
being installed to connect the schools. The high
school is located on the
west side of town; the elementary school on the east
side. Railroad tracks intersect the town. The railroad
tracks run north to south,
parallel with Highway 91.
“Railroad officials will
meet with us Tuesday or
Wednesday to make sure
everything is okay,” said
Schuelke. “There are lots
of permits and conversation to get a job like this
done.
“Where we can, we
use aerial cable overhead,
otherwise, we use underground conduit,” he said.
“Cable optics will be fed
through the underground
conduit.
“Jake Manchester is the
person who is drilling for
the underground conduit,”
said Schuelke. “He has a
spotter.
“The spotter tells him
if the cable is heading up,
down, to the left or right,”
he said. “If the cable is
being fed the desired direction, the operator keeps
circling his wheel.
“The progress made [by
the drill] is dependent on
the type of soil it is going

said Schuetz. “This cooler

BLACKFOOT — Of all
the excitement found at the
Eastern Idaho State Fair, the
biggest overall attraction
has always been the food.
Whether baked, grilled,
or fried, the EISF has a rich
tradition of offering the
best fair food in the west!
And it’s about time that
all of this delicious food
receives some recognition!
The results are in, and two
concessionaires have been
named the Best of the Best!
Winners were chosen
for the 4th annual Food
Awards from two categories: The “Best New Food
Creation” and the grand
champion “Fairest of them
All” award. Both winners
received a banner to hang
in their booth declaring
them 2015 champions,
and the Grand Champion
“Fairest of them All” winner
has the honor of displaying the traveling “Golden
Corndog” trophy for the
week. All food concessionaires were asked to submit
entries from their menus
found at the 2015 Fair to
the contest. Local media
members sorted through
the entries to determine
which foods for each category would make it to the
taste-testing ceremony held
Thursday, September 3, two
days before the official Fair
kickoff.
This year’s Best New
Food Creation was won
by Sweet Temptations
with their amazing Toffee
Tumbler. Last year’s “Best
New Food Creation” winner, Creamy Creations, took
home the top prize in the
Fairest of them All category
with their Raspberry Cream
Cheese Brownie on a Stick.
All food items were
judged on taste, appearance, and creativity. It is the
hope that these annual food
awards will provide recognition to the most outstanding and creative fair food
found in the intermountain
west!
HATCH, continued from 1A
long after when he himself
became a race car driver.
Hatch built his own
stock car 27 years ago.
He’s collected factory
parts, tires and everything
else that comes with constructing a racing machine.
He refers to his car as an
“old friend” and is constantly repairing and painting it after each race.
“I probably could have
had a good retirement if I
didn’t pick up this hobby,”
said Hatch.
Along with having a fast
car, Hatch also has the
strategic mind of a champion.
“Having the fastest car
doesn’t necessarily mean
you’re going to win the
race. It’s all about racing
smart,” said Hatch.
Hatch recalls some of
his favorite moments in
racing.
“The best races I’ve had
are the ones I didn’t win,”
said Hatch. He goes on to
share an experience when
he had to start at the back
of the race and work his
way up to the front.
“There were 25 laps and
I passed every car from
the outside before finally
sliding into second place,”
said Hatch. “Every time
after I finish a race I get so
much adrenaline. I usually
can’t fall asleep until 3 or 4
in the morning.”
Aside from the racing,
Hatch says he loves the
sport because of the camaraderie among fellow competitors and the support
from the fans.
“Sometimes my grand
kids think I’m their hero,”
said Hatch with a smile.
“That’s the best part.”

Labor Day: A
call to action
When I was a girl, Labor
Day marked the end of
Donna
summer. It was a day of rest
and recreation, family and
Brazile
picnics. And, like all kids,
I was ready to go back to
school.
Labor Day was also honored in our home for what it is: a day set aside to recognize
the contributions of working men and working women to
America.
Like so many in my family, I’m a proud card-carrying
member of a union. For decades, our family worked as
teachers, truckers, laborers and firefighters. The improvements we experienced in our lives truthfully came more
from the unceasing struggle of our labor unions working
together than from the accomplishments of our long working days as individuals.
In 2015, America remains a working nation; we are
steeped in the work ethic.
And thanks to the efforts and sacrifices of thousands,
including unknown martyrs who died struggling for better
working conditions, we eat better and live better and rest
better than our often exploited ancestors.
Did you know our Labor Day was inspired by Canada?
The first Labor Day in the Americas was a spontaneous event. The Toronto Printers’ Union had repeatedly
demanded a nine-hour work day, and repeatedly the
newspapers ignored them.
After three years of petitions, in 1872, the printers
went on strike. Two thousand printers marched down
Toronto’s streets, gathering bystanders and workers until
they entered Queen’s Park 10,000 strong. The editor of the
Toronto Globe had their leaders arrested for criminal conspiracy. Most lost their jobs -- in Canada, it was a criminal
act to form a labor union or to strike.
In the United States, that first-ever Labor Day parade
caught the attention of Oregon citizens. In 1887, Oregon
became the first state to honor labor. Twenty-nine states
followed.
Labor Day finally became a national observance in
1894 because President Grover Cleveland attempted to
break a Pullman’s wildcat strike in early May in Chicago
by sending in U.S. marshals and the army. After the carnage that followed, President Cleveland was fearful that
the May date would become immortalized by working
men and women. International workers organizations
already celebrated labor on May Day in commemoration
of the Haymarket Affair in May 1886, also in Chicago.
Cleveland asked Congress to rush through a labor
holiday for any day but that one. A mere six days after the
bloodbath, Cleveland declared the first day of September
as our Labor Day.
Today our workforce is changing. Blue-collar jobs are
morphing into cyber work. Humans are being replaced
by robots. By last December, Amazon had 10,000 robots
ready to fill Christmas orders. It makes me wonder who
will have the money to buy Apple watches, unless robots
wear them!
The problems of working men and women -- those
people who remain the backbone of this nation -- have
changed, too. Their needs, in many cases, are as dire (in
some cases more so) than the needs of the workers in the
last century.
The achievements of 19th- and 20th-century men and
women to obtain fair working conditions and pay have, in
the 21st century, evaporated into part-time jobs and pay so
low that a significant portion of our workforce are called
“the working poor.”
Income inequality is growing. The difference in income
between the top 1 percent of our population and, well,
everybody else, is widening to a gaping gulf. Regardless
of what impression you may have of how harsh income
inequality is, let me assure you, it’s far worse.
Sarah Anderson of the Institute for Policy Studies,
authored a report this March in which she detailed that the
bonuses paid to Wall Street CEOs last year was double the
total earnings of all of America’s full-time minimum wage
earners. Forbes called it “a fun number” that was “true,”
and added that we really needn’t be all that concerned
about it.
The owners of Wal-Mart, the Walton Family, have
more wealth than the combined wealth of 42 percent
of America. The Waltons don’t like labor unions. When
those pesky, progressive Canadians organized Wal-Mart’s
first ever union in 2005, the Waltons shut down the store.
(“Goodnight, John Boy!”)
In 2015, Wal-Mart is giving some of its workers raises.
That’s encouraging, because in many states their workers
are paid so poorly and are given such short work weeks
that they must turn to food stamps and welfare to survive.
Forbes reported that Wal-Mart’s low-wage, low-hour workers were costing taxpayers $6.2 billion annually.
It’s long past time that the country starts to focus on

The perils Of New Hampshire
BRETTON WOODS,
N.H. -- Stroll through the
ancient halls of the dowager hotel here and history
fairly screams at you. So
does the burden of history
that plays a quiet, subtle
role in the presidential
election that is unfolding
here.
At one time 50 trains a
day stopped here. During
the 1944 international
monetary
conference
that created the postwar
economy, John Maynard
Keynes preached his economic gospel here. (Dean
Acheson once interrupted
him.) As a presidential
candidate, George H.W.
Bush campaigned here.
And if you sit for a drink
this summer in the meticulously restored Rosebrook
Bar, with its stunning view
of the White Mountains’
Presidential Range, you
cannot avoid a Hillary
Rodham Clinton commercial on the television here.
And here it becomes
clear that great historical
forces are at work in the
2016 election. This is the
100th anniversary of the
New Hampshire primary.
And America’s greatest
contemporary legacies -two dynasties that together
contributed presidencies
that account for 20 percent of that century of the
Granite State’s inexplicable but unavoidable political prominence -- face
their greatest test here in
America’s legacy political
battleground.
The Clinton and Bush
families have suffered
defeats here and have
enjoyed victories here,
their fortunes changing as
fast as the weather, which
the other day turned from
frosty cold to humid hot in
the spell of a quarter-hour.
It was, after all, in New
Hampshire that the senior
George Bush’s “big-mo”
momentum, created with
a stunning 2-percentagepoint victory over former
Gov. Ronald Reagan in
Iowa only eight days earlier, sputtered to a close in
1980. And it was here, as
Sen. Bob Dole seemed to
surge, that Vice President
Bush enjoyed his vital
comeback primary victory
in 1988.
It was here that Gov. Bill
Clinton of Arkansas fought
back in 1992 after disclosures about extramarital
affairs and draft dodging,
claiming “comeback kid”
status himself, even though
he was defeated by former Sen. Paul Tsongas of
Massachusetts -- and setting his campaign on a
glide path to the White
House. And it was here
that the former New York
senator, bloodied and battered after being defeated
in Iowa by Sen. Barack
Obama of Illinois, won an
important victory and gave
perhaps her most stirring
speech, an unforgettable
comeback cantata of her
own.
But
now
New
Hampshire stands again
as a critical test for both
families.
Both know the peril in
these hills, so treacherous that the Appalachian
Mountain Club, which
for 139 years -- before
there even was a New
Hampshire primary -- has
encouraged outsiders to
explore the farthest reaches of this rugged state,
publishes a well-read
“Accident Report” in its
biannual journal. Its topic
is mishaps in the mountains. There are plenty of
them.
Gov. George W. Bush of
Texas had a clear path to
the 2000 GOP nomination
until he was ambushed
here by Sen. John McCain
of Arizona, who triumphed
by 18 points. Perhaps no
presidential
candidate
whose home state did not
border New Hampshire
-- and six good-neighbor
candidates, five from
Massachusetts and one
from Maine, have won
here -- has had a greater stake in winning New
Hampshire than Jeb Bush
does in 2016.
With a gold-plated list
of supporters and millions of dollars at hand,
Bush’s campaign is built
for the long run, but it
will not have a long run
if Sen. Marco Rubio of
Florida, Gov. Scott Walker
of Wisconsin or Gov. John
Kasich of Ohio, all considered
high-potential
candidates here, win this
primary. The Bush campaign is predicated on an
early sweep, even if in a
17-candidate field he wins
a small plurality.
The political calculus will shift many times
before Feb. 9, but it seems
possible now that a Bush
victory here might clear
out the center-right lane,
potentially ending as
many as three other candidacies, though Walker
would very likely survive.
In this fight, Bush has
many advantages; a top
adviser to one of his rivals
enviously cites Bush’s easy
manner with voters, his
graceful mien on the campaign trail, and his ability to listen respectfully
to questioners and not to
launch into a stock, prepared answer.
Clinton’s
challenge
is different entirely. The
former senator and secretary of state basically
faces one opponent, Sen.
Bernie Sanders, who
has been attracting large
crowds and who, on the
surface, has the homecourt advantage because
he is from Vermont, New
Hampshire’s neighbor to
the west. But this is the
fourth New Hampshire
primary for the Clintons,
who now have strong
roots here.
“Many, many residents here won’t vote for
a candidate until meeting that candidate in person -- shaking his hand,
looking her in the eye,
asking a direct question
-- and that often has to
happen in the small living room gatherings and
town hall events for the
lesser-known and longershot candidates hoping
that New Hampshire will
validate or jump-start
their campaigns,” says Jim
Collins, former editor of
Yankee magazine and a
leading curator of North
Country culture. “Hillary
Clinton won’t have to do
that this time around, but
she did at one time, and
people here remember.”
Together the two candidates have been working
New Hampshire hard, not
only in personal visits but
in flurries of phone calls
beyond the view of correspondents and commentators. Bush took the time to
meet with Joe McQuaid,
the publisher of the New
Hampshire Union Leader,
and has raked in operatives
experienced in statewide
campaigns for the Senate
and the White House.
Clinton claims almost all
the top Democratic operatives here.
The peril for both may
be having too many establishment ties. The “live
free or die” ethos that
is the leitmotif of New
Hampshire life isn’t congenial to inherited power,
a tradition dating to the
American Revolution and
reignited by the Yankee
Progressives of the early
part of the 20th century.
Three quarters of a century later, in 1984, former
Vice President Walter F.
Mondale rolled into this
state on a tailwind of inevitability, and was skunked
by Sen. Gary Hart of
Colorado.
The beauty of the New
Hampshire primary, Hart
says today, is its inclination to give an opening
to “so-called ‘dark horse’
candidates, those without
huge financial resources
or national notoriety, to
make their case for leadership.”
As beautiful as it may
be to their rivals, to
Clinton and Bush, that
characteristic, celebrated
for a century, could have
dark consequences.

Ada County seeks approval
from FAA to use drones
BOISE (AP) — Using
drones in military, law
enforcement and agriculture has become the
new normal in daily life
even in the relatively short
period unmanned aircrafts
have become available to
the public.
However, now a county in southwestern Idaho
says drones belong in the
trash.
Ada County officials
have recently submitted an
application to the Federal
Aviation Administration to
use a small commercial
drone to collect valuable
geographical data, starting
with the region’s landfill.
Currently, the county
spends hundreds of thousands of dollars each year
to fly manned aircraft
just to gather information about land use, said
Stephen O’Meara, Ada’s
information technology
director.

Blue ribbon winner
For example, the county can only afford to take
aerial photos of the 2,700acre landfill once a year
because manned-aircraft
can cost as much as $700
an hour to rent.
But at the same time,
the county is under pressure to keep an eye on the
region’s landfill considering it collected 440,000
tons of waste from four
cities and four separate
local government agencies in 2014.
O’Meara said using a
drone could provide an
easy way to learn how
quickly the area is expanding not only in sprawl but
also in height.
“We have high hopes,”
O’Meara said. “We feel
this could be very beneficial that does not cost a lot
of money to the taxpayer.”
According to the FAA,
it’ll take 60 to 90 days to
process the county’s appli-
cation barring any delays
stemming from legal questions and agency response.
Larry Maneely, the
county’s chief of staff,
said the county will post
online when and where
the drone flies to help prevent fears from those who
may distrust governmental
agencies using drones.
“Nothing will happen
in secret,” he said. “These
things have to fly below
400 feet so they will be in
eyesight and every flight
has to be pre-approved.”
Overtime, Maneely and
O’Meara would like to
see drone use help collect
data to pinpoint spraying
pesticides to kill mosquitoes and invasive weeds.
O’Meara added that
he doesn’t know of any
other similar drone efforts

Other recent gang
crimes have included a
fatal stabbing and deadly

“We’re not happy we’ve
seen this increase, but it’s
not a cause for panic, it’s
something we’re addressing,” Daniels said.
Nampa Mayor Bob

adjustment to your State’s
budget or programs as
well as careful and timely attention to the legal
rights afforded to individuals with disabilities,” Perez
wrote.
The ruling doesn’t take
effect immediately, and last
month an attorney for the
National Association for
Home Care and Hospice
said the plaintiffs in the
case were still considering
whether to seek an appeal
before the U.S. Supreme
Court.
Perez said that “public
entities must have in place
an individualized process”
to make sure that if a person’s home-care hours are
cut because of the wage
rule, the reduction isn’t so
great that it keeps that person from being able to live
at home.

POCATELLO (AP) —
About 40 car seats are sitting in a Pocatello Police
Department storage room
waiting for parents in
need.
KPVI-TV reports that
thanks to a $9,000 grant
from the Idaho Chapter
of the American Academy
of Pediatrics and the state
transportation agency, the
police department will
add 120 more car seats to
their offerings.
Police car seat specialist Mindi Anderson says
the program is designed to
get children in the correct
seat.
She says parents or
guardians can come in
and learn which seat is
best, depending on the
child’s age and other factors.
Parents will also go
through a tutorial by certified technicians. The child
must be present when they
educate the parents on the
seats.
Nampa police
renew efforts to
curb gang crime
NAMPA (AP) — Law
enforcement officials in
southwestern Idaho are
renewing efforts to stop a
resurgence of gang-related
violence.
High amounts of gang
violence in the early 2000s
caused the Nampa Police
Department to form its
own five-officer gang unit,
KTVB-TV reported. Those
officers were disbanded in
2012, but now city officials
say they want all of their
116 officers to re-focus on
fighting gang crimes.
“There was a lot of overt
behavior in those days, a lot
of gang members dressed
down and out causing
trouble, trying to intimidate people who were just
trying to live their own
lives,” said Deputy Chief
Brad Daniels, who was
the first officer assigned
to tackle the problem in
2000.
Nampa had 76 crimes
classified as gang-related
in 2014, Sgt. Joe Ramirez
said. The number is still
lower than the 317 gangrelated crimes reported in
2011, but officers are seeing an uptick which is worrisome.
Most recently, three
men were arrested after
a high-speed chase following the shooting of a
Nampa man. Police say
Alberto Chavez, 20, shot
26-year-old Kyle Jackson,
who had reportedly been
antagonizing drivers by
yelling and waving a red
bandanna. Chavez told
police Jackson was a member of a rival gang and
had slashed his face with
a knife. Jackson was later

Enforce homecare wages
BOISE (AP) — The U.S.
Department of Labor is
urging Idaho Gov. C.L.
“Butch” Otter to prepare
for a new rule that extends
minimum wage protections and overtime for
most home-care workers.
The Idaho Statesman
reports that Otter received
a letter from U.S. Labor
Secretary Thomas Perez
on Sept. 2, urging the governor to get Idaho ready
for compliance now.
The federal rule went
into effect in October
2013 but was challenged
in court. Last month a federal appellate court upheld
the rule, a decision that
Perez said could require
some budget changes.
Several states already
include home-care workers in minimum wage and
overtime-pay protections.
Idaho is not one of them.

Dog lost in Yellowstone National Park found 42 days later
YELLOWSTONE
NATIONAL PARK, Wyo.
(AP)
—
Yellowstone
National Park is known
for its wildlife, including
bears and wolves. But for
six weeks, one animal that
roamed the park didn’t
belong.
An Australian shepherd
named Jade was found in
the Canyon area Friday, 42
days after she went missing.
“She’s skin and bones,
but otherwise she seems
perfectly fine,” owner
David Sowers of Denver
said.
Sowers said Jade ran off
July 23 after an auto wreck
on July 23 while he and
his girlfriend, Laura Gillice,
were driving through the
park with the dog.
“When they tried to get
her out of the car she bolted and she ran into the
woods,” Sowers said. “She

disappeared for, like, 15
days, and I thought she was
gone.”
Over the last several
weeks, signs were posted
and an Internet campaign
started asking park visitors
to keep an eye out for the
dog. Traps with dog food
were even set.
Reports of Jade being
seen roaming the park
started coming in. Sowers
and his girlfriend, who
were both injured in the
wreck, had returned to
Yellowstone several times
to look for the dog before
finding her Friday.
“I haven’t been follow-
ing doctors’ orders very
well,” said Sowers, who
suffered injuries to his ribs,
arm and leg in the accident. “They told me not to
be doing this, but I wanted
to find my dog.”
On Friday morning,
Gillice was with their
other dog when she saw
something black and white
across a meadow.
In less than a minute
“she started running toward
me,” Gillice said.
Sowers said other than
a small cut on her lip and
losing weight, Jade is OK.
“It’s a miracle,” Gillice
said.

Beer cup
lawsuit moves
forward
BOISE (AP) — An Idaho
judge has tossed out portions of a lawsuit against
the owner of a Boise area,
where a handful of hockey
fans contend they were
victims of a beer scam.
According to KBOITV, Ada County Judge
Deborah A. Bail nixed
plaintiff’s claim of fraud
and misrepresentation on
Monday.
The lawsuit, filed in
Boise’s 4th District Court
in 2014, contends that
Block 22 LLC, which does
business as CenturyLink
Arena, defrauded customers by fooling them into
thinking that a tall, narrow
cup of beer sold for $7 was
substantially bigger than a
shorter, wider cup sold for
$4.
The case will now
move forward on claims
that CenturyLink violated Idaho’s Consumer
Protection Act and unjust
enrichment.
A jury trial is scheduled
for Nov. 3. CenturyLink
has since stopped purchasing the plastic cups.
Sewage forces
Boise restaurant
closure
BOISE (AP) — Public
health inspectors have
closed a longtime Boise
restaurant after experiencing a sewage backup.
The Idaho Statesman
reports that Siam Thai restaurant has had its restaurant’s license temporarily suspended by the
Central District Health
Department.
According to the health
department, a clogged
grease trap triggered the
backup which resulted in
sewage spilling into the
alley. Inspectors also found
an improperly functioning
toilet and a pest control
problem.
Siam Thai restaurant has
been operating in Boise
since the 1970s, but it has
moved in different locations. A sign on Siam’s
restaurant door says it’s
closed. Tables, chairs and
other equipment have
been removed.
Alaska woman
accused of
stealing car
holding husband
ANCHORAGE, Alaska
(AP) — A woman suspected of stealing an Alaska
State Troopers patrol car
that held her handcuffed
husband in the back seat
was arrested on suspicion
of theft and other charges.
Troopers acting on a tip
found Amber Watford, 28,
of Big Lake, and Joshua
Watford, 38, at a home in
Wasilla on Thursday.
An officer had arrested Joshua Watford on
Wednesday after receiving a tip that he was in
a Big Lake pawn shop.
He had been convicted of
driving under the influence
but had failed to attend
court-ordered classes, said
troopers spokeswoman
Megan Peters.
After Watford had been
placed in the back of a
patrol car, a passing motorist stopped and began
speaking to the arresting
officer. While the officer
was distracted, troopers
said, Amber Watford got
behind the wheel of the
patrol car and took off.

Sights from Snake River at Shelley Eagles have released
Tim Tebow
Morning News -- Jason Enes
Snake River’s Wyatt Vogler looks for a hole in the Shelley defense Friday night.
PHILADELPHIA (AP)
— Tebow’s time is up in
Philadelphia.
The Eagles released
Tim Tebow on Saturday
along with 21 other players before the NFL’s roster
deadline at 4 p.m.
Tebow had seemingly
won the No. 3 quarterback
job when Philadelphia
traded Matt Barkley to
Arizona on Friday. But
coach Chip Kelly cut
Tebow following his best
preseason performance
at the New York Jets on
Thursday night.
The 2007 Heisman
Trophy winner was trying
to return to the NFL after
missing two seasons.
The Eagles currently have only two quarterbacks on the roster:
Sam Bradford and Mark
Sanchez. Bradford looked
sharp in limited preseason
action, but he had surgery
to repair a torn left ACL
twice since he last played
in a regular-season game
in October 2013.
It’s possible Tebow
returns to the Eagles if
either Bradford or Sanchez
get hurt. He also can come
back after the season
opener and his contract
won’t be guaranteed.
For now, the Eagles are
going forward without
him.
Tebow was 11 for 17
for 189 yards, two touchdowns and one interception against the Jets. He
showed his accuracy has
improved since his first
stint in the NFL. Tebow
finished the preseason 21
of 36 for 286 yards, two
TDs and one interception.
He also ran for 82 yards
and one TD.
Tebow last played in a
regular-season game with
the Jets in 2012. He was
cut by New England in
training camp in 2013. He
worked as a college football analyst on the SEC
Network last year, but got
another chance to play in
the NFL when the Eagles
signed him in the offseason.
Tebow led Florida to the
national championship his
junior season and was a
first-round pick by Denver
in 2010. He started 16
games during two seasons
with the Broncos, including a playoff victory over
Pittsburgh in January 2012.
Tebow was traded to the
Jets after Denver signed
Peyton Manning.

Bengals record first shutout in 10 years
POCATELLO — The
Idaho State football team
recorded its first shutout
in 10 years by beating
Black Hills State, 55-0, on
Saturday afternoon at Holt
Arena.
The Bengals tallied 710
total yards, the second
most in school history and
the defense held the Yellow
Jackets to 155 total yards.
ISU rushed for 332 yards,
led by Jakori Ford’s 201
yards on 24 carries. The
quarterback duo of Michael
Sanders and Tanner Gueller
combined to throw for 378
yards.
Sanders was 15-for18 for 278 yards and five
touchdowns. Gueller was
10-for-16 for 100 yards and
one touchdown.
Madison
Mangum
caught five passes for 78
yards and three touchdowns. Hagen Graves
caught three passes for 67
yards and two touchdowns
and CJ Hatchett caught a
touchdown pass.
CJ Langlow led the
defense with seven tack-
les, one interception and
he returned a blocked punt
for a touchdown.
Idaho State led 21-0 at
the end of the first quarter
after 41 and a nine-yard
touchdown receptions by
Mangum. Xavier Finney
added the third touchdown
of the quarter on a oneyard run with 2:51 left in
the first.
The Bengal lead was
extended to 42-0 at halftime. Mangum scored
his third touchdown on a
three-yard reception from
Sanders and Graves then
scored his two touchdowns
on passes for 29 and 30
yards from Sanders.
In the third quarter Drew
Sharkey blocked a punt
and CJ Langlow returned it
36 yards for his first career
touchdown. CJ Hatchett
then scored on a nine-yard
reception from Gueller in
the fourth quarter.
Idaho State opens Big
Sky Conference play next
week vs. Portland State.
Kickoff is at 4 p.m. in Holt
Arena.
Stenson takes lead at Deutsche Bank
NORTON, Mass. (AP)
— One 3-wood quickly
put Henrik Stenson into
the mix at the Deutsche
Bank
Championship.
Another one helped to give
him the lead.
Stenson
drilled
a
3-wood on the 298-yard
fourth hole at the TPC
Boston that hit into the
bank and rolled up to
20 feet for an eagle that
allowed him to bolt up the
leaderboard. The Swede
showed off his supreme
strength on the par-5 closing hole with a 3-wood off
the tee that left him only a
6-iron into the green for a
two-putt birdie that gave
him a 6-under 65 and a
one-shot lead over Rickie
Fowler.
Five
shots
behind
going into the third round
Sunday, Stenson made up
that deficit in just seven
holes. He can only hope
to make up that kind of
ground on a winless season during the final month
of the FedEx Cup playoffs.
“It’s a good time to start
playing well,” said Stenson,
who was at 13-under 200.
“It’s a big event and lots to
play for. I’m happy with
the progress I made and
it gave me a little bit of a
confidence boost last week
that I had a nice tournament. I hope I can have
another one here tomorrow.”
Fowler had a 67, missing out on a chance to
share the lead when his
5-iron into the 18th was
too strong and he had to
scramble to salvage a par.
Sean O’Hair (67) and
Matt Jones (68) were two
shots behind.
They all took advantage
of a collapse by Charley
Hoffman, who blazed his
way to victory at the TPC
Boston five years ago.
After opening with a birdie, Hoffman put his second shot into the hazard
at the par-5 second hole
and made bogey, and it
slipped away from there.
He shot 41 on front, had
five bogeys in a seven-hole
stretch and didn’t make
another birdie until his last
hole for a 76.
Jordan Spieth was headed for a return to No. 1,
and he’s not even here
after missing his second
straight cut.
PGA champion Jason
Day would have to win
the Deutsche Bank to go to
No. 1 in the world, and the
Australian finally hit the
wall. Day made a double
bogey on the reachable
par-4 fourth hole and never
quite recovered. He had a
73, his first round over par
since closing with a 74 at
the U.S. Open in June.
“There’s no excuse for
poor playing,” said Day,
who was nine shots out of
the lead. “I just wish I had
a little bit more energy.”

DETROIT (AP) — The
Detroit Lions have cut former Boise State quarterback
Kellen Moore, according
to ESPN and local media
reports in Detroit.
Moore had an impressive showing in Detroit’s
final preseason game on
Thursday night, going
16-for-22 for 150 yards
and a touchdown against
the Buffalo Bills.
But it apparently wasn’t
enough to save his roster spot.
The Lions reportedly
liked Moore, but were
forced to take players at
other positions due to
injuries. NFL teams were
required to get down to
their final 53-man rosters
by Saturday at 3 p.m. MT.
Moore is eligible of the
Lions’ practice squad if
he’s not claimed on waivers.
Moore signed with
Detroit as a free agent after
not being selected in the
2012 NFL Draft. He was the
Lions’ third-string quarterback the past three seasons,
but never suited up for a
regular season game.
Detroit decided to go
with only two quarterbacks this season.
Moore led Boise State to
a 50-3 record in four years
as the starter from 200811 and is college football’s
all-time winningest quarterback. He was a finalist
for the Heisman Trophy in
2010.

COMICS & ADVICE
MICKEY MOUSE
Dear Annie: I've been in a
relationship for five years with a
guy who has been very enjoyable company. However, in the
past 18 months, rumors have
surfaced about him being bisexual. He never told me about this
part of his past. Finally, I confronted him, and he admitted
this was just a whim at a time in
his life when he was alone. He's
been divorced for 43 years and
claims he never knew why his
wife divorced him.
He now feels that, since he is
with me and the past desires are
no longer there, I should just forget about my disgusted feelings
and go on as if nothing was ever
said. His friends were the ones
who kept dropping these hints to
me, but of course, I ignored them
until now.
I don't know if I should continue this relationship. He is 85
and I am 79. We don't have sex,
since he has erectile dysfunction
and his desires have diminished.

DEAR DOCTOR K: I am

What can I do to reduce
my risk of getting it again?
GARFIELD

am-news.com
DEAR
READER:
Nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain and diarrhea.
Yuck! Food poisoning is
not something you want to
repeat if you can avoid it.
Fortunately, there are many
things you can do to reduce
your risk.
Food poisoning commonly occurs when food
or water is contaminated
during improper cooking,
handling or storage. The
most common contaminants are bacteria, such as
salmonella, Campylobacter
and E. coli. Most incidents
can be prevented by selecting, handling and preparing food properly.
First, select safe foods:
-- Buy foods before their
expiration date.
-- Make certain that cans
of food are not dented or
bulging. A bulging can
could indicate that the food
inside is contaminated by
a type of bacteria that produces gas.
-- Make sure jars of food
are sealed tightly.
-- Avoid foods that contain raw eggs.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan.

scenery will provide a mental
and physical break from your
current distress.
AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb.

personal changes that will
motivate you to move forward.
Time spent on education or
resume-boosting will bring
high returns.
PISCES (Feb. 20-March 20)
-- Today’s emphasis will be
on romance and partnerships.
There is positive energy around
you that others find appealing.
Concentrate on collaborating
with new personal or professional acquaintances.
Dr.
Anthony
Komaroff
Ask Doctor K
Then, store foods properly:
-- Refrigerate or freeze
perishables immediately.
-- Keep your refrigerator
and freezer at proper temperatures. That’s 40 degrees
Fahrenheit for the fridge
and 0 degrees Fahrenheit
for the freezer.
-- Store items according to their labeled instructions.
-- Thaw food in the
refrigerator or microwave.
Leaving food to thaw at
room temperature gives
bacteria a chance to grow.
Finally, prepare foods
safely:
-- Keep utensils and
cooking surfaces clean.
-- Always wash your
hands before and after preparing food.
-- Rinse fruits and vegetables thoroughly.
-- Use a cutting board
that is smooth, hard and
nonporous. Clean it with
soap and hot water before
and after each use.
-- When preparing
foods, keep raw foods separate from foods that are
ready to eat.
-- Each week, sterilize sponges in hot water.
Better yet: Microwave the
sponges. Sponges are so
full of nooks and crannies
where bacteria can hide
that microwaving reaches
them better than just hot
water.
-- Launder dishcloths at
least once a week.
-- Each week, sanitize
the sink and drain with a
cleaning solution.
-- Use a meat thermometer to make sure all food
is cooked thoroughly. Be
particularly cautious with
seafood and poultry.
-- Serve foods immediately after cooking.
When eating at a restaurant, order cautiously. Be
wary of soft cheeses, raw
seafood and anything that
contains raw eggs.
If you do get food poisoning, drink plenty of fluids, even if you have trouble keeping them down.
This is important because
large amounts of fluids are
lost through vomiting and
diarrhea. If vomiting or
diarrhea lasts for more than
24 hours, call your doctor.
