From the Chairman
By its very name, an Annual Report is meant to reflect the previous
year. And the pages that follow do just that, detailing the people,
businesses and organizations that made 2009 exceptional.
As chairmen, there is also an understandable bias to share only the
accomplishments of our respective years.
However, in order to fully share the impact your Chamber has had
on our community, a larger view is warranted.
Being considered the fourth strongest economy during the most
challenging economic times in generations didn’t just happen.
It was the direct result of a commitment to regional economic
development, marked by the Chamber’s staffing of the Metro Little
Rock Alliance less than five years ago.
Five years ago, $1,133,235,71 new capital investment, $364,930,594
new annual payroll, and 10,112 jobs did not exist.
Five years ago, there was no Schulze & Burch, Caterpillar, HP,
BJ Services, Welspun, LM Glasfiber, Sage V Foods, AT&T Internet
Support, Stanley, Inc., Green Way Bio Energy, ACCENT Marketing
Services, Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC),
Boyd Metals, Cardinal Health, Pinnacle Business Solutions, Ring
Container or FTD.com in the region.
Five years ago, there was no Business Retention & Expansion
program, 80 annual existing industry visits, or Synchronist software to
create a useable database for expansion opportunities.
Five years ago, there was no dedicated staff for public policy to
fight anti-business legislation like card check, no super project
incentives, motion picture and content incentives, or Little Rock
School District strategic planning partnership.
Five years ago, there was no Little Rock Film Commission, Arkansas
River Cities Sports Commission or Create Little Rock.
Five years ago, there was no Business Quarterly Report, weekly
Business E-Newsletter, or effective website and database.

Five years ago, there was no :59 Minutes, Arkansas Film Series,
Bowling for Business, Commerce Arkansas, Hispanic Business Series,
Intro or Trailblazers Leads Groups, Member Orientation, Operation
Thank You, Small Business Success Series, Speed Networking, Taste
of the Rock or Women’s Business Series.
It also should be noted that the Chamber is not claiming sole
responsibility for all that is reported. Economic and community
development is a team effort, dependent on any number of
interconnected and disparate players to achieve our desired
results.
Five years ago.
I extend my earnest appreciation to you – the members of the
Little Rock Regional Chamber of Commerce – for your investment
of resources this past year to fund and execute the work of our
private, member-supported organization.
Five years ago, this organization had a vision of what it and the
region could accomplish if it put aside geographic, political and
cultural boundaries and focused on the marketplace – one million
people in a 50-mile radius. It put a plan and staff support in place
for success and went to work.
Five years later, the aforementioned results trumpet that our
visionaries’ confidence in regionalism was well placed.
And now, what of the next five years? While I’ll leave that to
Barbara Graves and her capable team of leaders to follow, I would
offer that the past five years have built a base upon which we
can create a Little Rock region which will not only rank among the
strongest economies in the nation, but in the world.
My caution would be to not take for granted the greatest
economic development success in our history. As illuminated so
well by the Better Together study and plan, commissioned by Fifty
for the Future, our community must solve the very real and urgent
challenges in public education, public safety and unity or our
economic development momentum will end.
To that end, the Chamber’s mission remains narrow, but deep – the
economic development of the region. Our competitors are not
within Arkansas’ borders, but without – and they are armed with
deeper public and private pockets, more enticing incentives, and
in many cases, more desperate circumstances. In other words, we
can’t let our success numb us to the realities of our competitors.
While there is a tendency among chambers for these reports to
take credit for all good news that happens in a community in a
given year, we have chosen to honor others’ good work by only
reporting successes with which we were directly involved.
It has been my honor to follow extraordinary former chairmen and
serve with an exceptional group of leaders within our community,
and I thank you all for your diligent effort in moving the Chamber
forward in its mission on behalf of the community.
As we look to next year and beyond, I predict many more
successes and am eager to continue serving under the leadership
of Barbara Graves and her successors.
Finally, I also have developed a deep appreciation for the dayto-day efforts of our professional management. What they are
able to accomplish with a small team and limited resources is
nothing short of astonishing.
Thank you again for an amazing year and for your enduring
commitment to the Chamber and its leadership in the economic
development of our region.
