FOCUS ON BLACK SEA XXX THE SGS CONTINUOUS AN SGS CORPORATEIMPROVEMENT NEWSLETTERNEWSLETTER FOR AGRICULTURAL SERVICES N° 3 • JULY 2014 Dear Customer, This year marks the third edition of our “Focus on Black Sea”. Since the last edition, our teams have been working tirelessly to improve internal processes, invest in upgrades for our laboratory network and develop new services that will better serve your needs. Both the quantity and the quality of crops seen at this early stage of the new season look promising. We expect large quantities of grain and oilseed exportation to commence from this region and first shipments are already TURKEY AFLATOXIN AND GMO MONITORING SERVICES FOR CORN Aflatoxins are a group of mycotoxins which are usually most severe when drought, extreme heat or injuries occur to crops. Since June 2014, Turkey allows the sale of products with a proportion of GMO contaminants of 0.9% or less. However, the import of GMO seeds is still not allowed as well as the production of GMO corn. SGS Turkey provides field sampling and analytical services to help clients monitor the mycotoxin levels and presence of GMO in their crops. Our team of experts will supply a mapping of the country showing the levels of both aflatoxins and GMO. They will select villages to be monitor based on the production capacity (10,000 Mtons per season). These villages are visited in intervals throughout the growing season and crops are sampled directly from the fields. These samples are labelled by village name and specific location and then analyzed to form a complete picture of Turkish corn with the levels of both aflatoxin and GMO found by area. being loaded with new crop grain. The current political and economic situation in the region puts even more emphasis on accurate and reliable inspection and testing services. SGS has been strengthening our network and our leading position in the region continues to develop. This newsletter will introduce you to the regional contacts within the SGS Team, including the office teams as well as our laboratory experts. Our Geneva team is also available to support your global requirements as required. SEED AND CROP SERVICES SGS Turkey offers contract research services to Agrochemical companies and has been assisting its clients during their registration process with the Ministry of Agriculture since 2012.
