President’s Letter
May 2016
Dear fellow EAG members,
As I approach the end of my term as President,
I want to thank you for all of the support I received
this past year. A special thanks to the EAG Board who
always stepped up and went the extra step to make
all of our member and solo shows, programs, parties
and openings the outstanding events we have come
to expect at EAG.
Special appreciation needs to be extended to
Bert Cohn and his committee who undertook revising
the EAG by-laws to reflect current practices. Those
by-laws will be voted upon at the next member meeting, May 19th. At that meeting we will also be voting
on the slate of officers for 2016/17, awarding our
scholarships, enjoying the annual pizza party, and listening to our fellow artist offer up their critiques for
submitted pieces.
Thank you again for allowing me to serve as
your president.

Alice Sandra Tangalos
Alice Sandra Tangalos, nee Alexandra Tambour, born January 25 th, 1926, beloved wife of the late Anthony J. Tangalos, fond mother of Dr. Dennis, Dr.
Christina (Bob), Will (Lisa) and Tony, loving grandmother of Alexa, Alexandra, Ursula, Maria & Stephanie, left us on March 30, 2016. Alice and her
husband Tony, natives of Illinois, raised their family in Elmhurst, Illinois
where she was active in the fine arts, education and real estate. Alice was a
longtime member of the Elmhurst Artists’ Guild (EAG) beginning in the
1960’s and serving as president in 1971, 1973, 1974 & 1975. During the time
Alice served EAG her husband Tony was selected as the first chairman of the
fundraising committee for the Elmhurst Art Museum. Alice & Tony Tangalos’s efforts were instrumental in incubating the vision and raising the capital for establishing the Elmhurst Art Museum.
FROM ALICE’S SON TONY:
This information is provided to the Museum staff and directors for your careful consideration for possible inclusion in the HISTORY tab of the Museum
website. Mom gave several decades of her heart and soul to the EAG and
partnered with Dad to really champion the Museum fundraising campaign. I recall as a young child in the
1960s and 70s hearing both my parents frequently speak about the EAG and the vision of the Museum. There were many conversations in our home about how overwhelming achieving the fundraising
goal appeared to be. I recall it took many, many years of tireless and determined effort on their part as well
as many others to raise the funds. Together, Mom & Eleanor Hookham, along with Dad’s fundraising,
really championed the EAG & Museum.
Our family lived on the N. E. corner of Poplar & Church in Brynhaven & were close friends with Diana
Nicholas (Lazzadro) whose family built the Lapidary Art Museum. Both the Nicholas family and the
Hookhams lived close by, just a few blocks away.
Unfortunately, my parents moved to Arizona to retire in 1984 and I do not believe they ever got to see the
fruits of their tireless efforts. Mom would be so happy to see the museum succeeding so well. I visited the
Museum in 2005 with my three daughters and brought Mom photos. My brothers and sister would be profoundly grateful if the Museum board would include some mention of my mother and father’s vision and
drive to see the Elmhurst Art Museum come to fruition on the history tab of the Museum website.
In closing, I would like to invite anyone in EAG who remembers mom to call or e-mail with any memories
they have of her that I can add to her memorial scrap book. Thank you.

The
Elmhurst
Artists’ Guild
has served the greater Elmhurst visual arts community since its founding in 1946. The Guild
exhibited its art at a local community center, creating the first “Elmhurst Art Museum.” In
1990, the Guild sold its property adjacent to Wilder Park to provide expansion for the new
Elmhurst Art Museum. We continue to meet at the Museum on the third Thursday of every
month except June, July and August.
Sustaining Members: The Guild appreciates the support of our sustaining members and
their commitment to the arts. We encourage our members to patronize Elmhurst businesses, and particularly our sustaining members who are listed here. Become a sustaining
member and list your business here!
