time such as welded construction & standardized
components such as ends, brakes, and roofs made
them economical to purchase and maintain. From
the late 40’s through the 70’s, PS-1 box cars could
be found in service with railroads all across the
country, with a few hardy examples soldiering
on into the 1990’s.

Pullman Standard PS-1 Boxcars
Introduced in 1947, Pullman-Standard’s
enormously successful PS-1 boxcar series
revolutionized freight car construction. Initially
offered in 40' and 50' versions, with different door
configurations and sizes to satisfy various shipper
requirements, the rugged PS-1 series of cars
rapidly found acceptance on the railroads in a wide

cars by the thousands, and the basic design
was so popular that some railroads, such as the
C&O, built copies in their own shops. Coming
into widespread use in the 1940s, many of these
cars lasted well into the 70s before finally being
eclipsed by larger 100-ton designs. However,
many of these rugged cars still had useful life
left, with some soldiering on even longer in
MOW or other restricted service.

70-Ton Open Hoppers
One of the most important car types in the
railroad industry, open-top hoppers often draw
the most lading types of any cars in railroad
service. From coal, to crushed stone, to ore
and anything else in between, hoppers can
carry it. These 70-ton, 3-bay designs, with
either exterior posts or offset side panels, were
some of the most common designs. Railcar
builders such as AC&F and GATC built these

system designed to keep the milk at a
constant 38 degrees Fahrenheit. Riding
on passenger car trucks, these unique
cars were often painted Pullman green
to match the passenger cars of the era.
The special purpose Pfaudler cars hauled
bulk milk shipments well into the 1950's.

In the 1920's, the Pfaudler Company
and General American Car Company
manufactured hundreds of wood
sheathed, insulated milk cars. Designed
to carry milk as a bulk commodity, the
cars were built around two 6,000 gallon

different door sizes and other options to handle
different assignments, these cars proved to be
extremely popular with shortlines.
At the end of the IPD boom during the early
1980s, when thousands of boxcars were idled,
many of the Berwick boxcars would be sold to
new owners, including class one roads, and even
boxcar giant Railbox. A sturdy design, many of
these cars are still in service today, in some
instances with their 2nd or even 3rd owners.

Berwick Forge & Fabrication 50' Boxcar
One of the more distinctive boxcar designs to hit
the rails, Berwick Forge & Fabrication’s 50'
exterior-post general-service boxcars came on the
scene just in time for the IPD (Incentive Per Diem)
boxcar boom of the 1970s, which saw new
boxcars built by the tens of thousands. The
Berwick cars stood out from the rest thanks to
their distinctive non-terminating “sine wave”
corrugated ends, and for many operators, optional
logo panels mounted on the doors. Available with

wrapped up in 1976, thousands had been built
for Class One and shortline roads alike.
As with many other boxcars built during the
IPD boom, many were sidelined in the early
80s as the boom subsided. However, these
relatively new cars would see plenty of service
life, as many would transfer to new owners
through equipment sales and railroad mergers.
Many are still going strong today.

Southern Iron & Equipment Co. 50' Boxcar
One of the lesser-know freight car manufacturers,
Southern Iron & Equipment Co. (SIECO) of Atlanta,
GA, introduced its 50' Exterior-Post, General-Service
boxcar in 1972. These Plate B, 5,077 cubic foot
cars, distinctive with their straight sills, inset
non-terminating improved Dreadnaught ends,
and deep reinforcement panels under the doors,
were introduced just in time for the Incentive Per
Diem (IPD) boxcar boom. By the time production

of boxcars comprised of FMC products.
Notable are the different door widths and
configurations. Cars with single 10' sliding doors
were good general-service cars, while dual 8'
sliding doors (resulting in a generous 16' overall
door opening), either centered or offset, were ideal
for lumber. Cars with plug doors (either a single
plug door, or a combination sliding door/plug
door) were better suited for rolls of paper that
needed to be shielded from the elements.

FMC 50' Exterior-Post Boxcar
FMC, one of the major makers in the freight car
business, made a name for itself in the 1970s,
due to the huge demand for new boxcars during
that era. FMC turned out huge quantities of
new 50' exterior-post, Plate C boxcars for Class
One and shortline railroads during this period,
making them one of the dominant suppliers of
the era. Boxcar giant Railbox was a huge
customer, with nearly 20 percent of its vast fleet

UTLX Manufacturing has been
expanding production capacity to meet
growing demand for ethanol tank cars.
Ethanol is made mostly from corn and
is used as an additive to oxygenate
gasoline to reduce pollution, but it is
also being used in a mostly raw form
as an alternative to gasoline. This
30,000-gallon design is sized to stage
the greatest number of cars at the
producers’ loading racks and still
meet the 263,000-pound gross rail
load limit per car. The Funnel-Flow ®
design facilitates complete bottom
unloading. These cars are in service
nationwide, with loaded cars collected
in small numbers from various
Midwestern ethanol plants, often by
regional shortlines, then assembled
into larger blocks by major railroads
for movement to refineries.

Introduced in 1990, Gunderson’s 48'
Husky-Stack Stand-Alone well car helped
to solve a growing car utilization problem
facing intermodal shippers and railroads.
During the double stack container car
boom of the 1980s, articulated sets of
cars (platforms sharing a common set
of trucks) were the order of the day.
However, these early articulated sets
lacked the capacity for carrying the
increasingly heavier container loads.
The Husky-Stack solved this problem
by providing a single-unit car that could
easily handle increasing container weights
and lengths. Capable of carrying a single
40', 45', 48', or a pair of 20' containers in
the well, with an additional 40' to 53'
container stacked on top, the Husky-Stack
provided the versatility desired by railroads
and shippers alike. In addition to singleunit cars, Husky-Stacks were also built in
3 and 4-unit drawbarred sets, offering even
more operational flexibility.

With the completion of America’s first
transcontinental railroad (the “Overland
Route”) larger passenger cars were
required to accommodate westbound
traffic. In the 1870s Overland Cars — a
new generation of coaches — premiered.
Constructed of wood with distinctive
clerestory roofs above and sturdy iron
truss rods beneath, Overlands were a
common site on long - and medium distance trains through the 1880s. The
basic design was used for a wide variety
of passenger car configurations, but not
diners. In this early era rail travel trains
made meal stops for passengers rather
than feeding them on board.
As even bigger passenger equipment
joined America’s railroads, Overlands
served on branch lines of major
railroads. Once bumped from even
these humble duties, Overlands could
still be found in work train service well
into the 1920s.

The Mack R was first produced in 1966,
replacing the previous Mack B model. The
trucks enjoyed a long service life with many
R models still in service today. During their
long lives these popular Mack trucks were
used for a number of tasks including tow
trucks and construction trucks.
Fruehauf’s 40' exterior post trailer was
one of the most popular trailers of the 1960s.
Its distinctive vertical ribs (exterior posts)
provided rugged construction. These
trailers found acceptance with railroads
and truck lines alike, and were equally at
home riding piggyback as they were
traversing the highways.
The trailer comes assembled with the
landing gear extended but parts are provided
for the retracted position. The landing gear
wheels and a portion of the strut are
attached with non-permanent
glue, allowing removal of
the parts with a gentle tug.
You can then glue the
shorter, retracted wheels
and struts in place.

reliability, and style. The nine units, numbered
100-108, were delivered in Santa Fe’s classic
red and silver Warbonnet colors. Milwaukee
Road took notice, and ordered five FP45s to
power its passenger trains as well.
Building upon the success of the FP45
design, EMD followed up with the F45, a
shorter version of the FP. Basically an SD45
in a cowl body, the F45 offered the
advantages of the cowl, but for freight
service. Santa Fe purchased F45s to use
alongside its FP45s. Other railroads, such as
Great Northern (later BN) saw the advantages
of the cowl body in harsh climates, and also
purchased F45s. While many F/FP45s were
replaced by more efficient locomotives in
the 1980s, some would last into the new
millennium, testimony to the soundness
of the cowl design.

In the 1960s, America’s passenger trains
were struggling, with passenger traffic
in decline, thanks to the airlines and
interstate highway system. The remaining
trains were often being handled by aging
locomotives that were becoming costly to
maintain. The Santa Fe, always conscious
of its public image, was looking for new
power, while maintaining the stylish image
of their premier passenger trains. Modified
freight units of the era, such as the boilerequipped SDP45 and U28CG, simply wouldn’t
do. EMD delivered the definitive answer in
December 1967, with the FP45.
Building off of the successful SD45 series,
the FP45 was basically an SDP45, but with
a full-width cowl body to better match
passenger equipment. It was exactly what
the Santa Fe wanted – high horsepower,

Introduced in the 1970’s by Canadian
builder Bombardier, the BiLevel
Commuter Car is arguably the most
popular design of its type in service
today. In operation with numerous
transit agencies in the US and Canada,
these distinctive cars are commonly
seen hauling commuters during rush
time; very important to the commuter
on the go. For increased operational
flexibility, these cars can be ordered
with an operator cab on one end,
allowing for push-pull operation,
eliminating the need for the train to
be turned at the end of a run.
