welcome
Winter / Spring
2010 - 2011
It’s with great pleasure that I welcome you on behalf of Preston City Council and the staff
of the Guild Hall and Charter Theatre to another fantastic season, packed full of great
entertainment. So packed in fact, that we didn’t have the room to feature several
‘sold out’ concerts in this brochure!
We have music to suit all tastes, from the classical concerts of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonicc
Orchestra and Julian Lloyd Webber to Preston Opera’s production of Verdi’s A Masked Ball and
the rich voices of Ladysmith Black Mambazo. Classic rock from Status Quo and One Night of
Queen is complemented by the feel-good soul of The Blues Brothers Party. Folk rock is providedd
by Runrig, rock‘n’roll with Buddy Holly and the Cricketers and classic big band with the Glenn
Miller Orchestra. Folk music both traditional and contemporary is provided by The Houghton
Weavers and Kate Rusby respectively, as they both bring their festively themed shows to the Guild Hall, and not forgetting
the spectacle of The British Pink Floyd Show.
Our comedy line-up includes stand-up from Al Murray, Stephen K Amos, Patrick Monahan and Jimmy Carr. Hull Truck
Theatre return with John Godber’s hilarious play April In Paris starring Coronation Street favourite Wendi Peters,
and The Naked Truth is back with a brand new all star cast!
Musical fans will be delighted to see the return of the ever-popular Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat
and Blood Brothers, as well as the Preston première of La Cage Aux Folles.
Drama comes courtesy of The Nightmare Room, A Christmas Carol, The Chosen Ones and Ghosts.
As always there is lots of family entertainment with The Wind in The Willows, Fireman Sam, The Chuckle Brothers,
Horrible Histories, Roary The Racing Car, Peppa Pig, Gleemania and not forgetting the ever-popular Preston tradition
of pantomime! This year will see Guild Hall Productions producing yet another wonderful show, following their record
breaking panto last year. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs stars a great cast, including Ted Robbins (The Slammer) and
Kay Purcell (Tracy Beaker), and features our very own magnificent seven dwarfs from the world of film and television
(including the Harry Potter movies) and a spectacular laser light show!
Don’t forget that, in addition to our wonderful season of shows, we are also a multi-purpose conference, function
and exhibition venue. To enquire about facilities and availability please email [email protected].
Details of our generous discounts can be found towards the rear of this brochure, or visit our website,
www.prestonguildhall.com, where you may also find up-to-date details of our events and facilities,
and book tickets online.
Best Wishes

On Christmas Eve, the most magical night of the year, the miserly
Ebenezer Scrooge is whisked away on a terrifying journey through
the past and into the future, accompanied by three fearsome ghosts
determined to make him realise the true meaning of Christmas.
Charles Dickens’ classic ghost story is brought alive in this most
traditional of productions, complete with beautiful period costume,
song, dance and a magnificent, original musical score. Join critically
acclaimed theatre company Chapterhouse as Scrooge’s frozen heart
begins to melt and he finally embraces the festive spirit in this most
Christmassy of Christmas tales.

'No-one can leave
the garden...'
Prosperous businessman Greg Harding has a dark
secret, and his new gardener Callum knows all about
it. When Greg and his grown-up children Ben and Anna
gather for a birthday barbecue, Callum arrives ready to
act as judge, jury and executioner. Over the course of
the evening Callum breaks the close knit family apart,
revealing the sins they have committed and the lies that
tie them together, showing how a crime in the past has
led to a tragedy in the present. All too soon it becomes
clear that no-one will be allowed to leave the garden
until a truly terrifying decision has been made.

with Preston Opera Orchestra
English translation by Peter Clarke
A melodrama in three acts centred around Sweden’s King Gustavus III.
A tragic drama that encompasses an entire geometry of human passions:
love, duty, honour, infidelity, betrayal, revenge, and murder.
But with its tragic elements redeemed by forgiveness,
contrition and reconciliation.
Musically and dramatically one of Verdi’s
most popular operas.

STARRING
X FACTOR’S
NIKI EVANS
IN THE ICONIC
ROLE OF MRS
JOHNSTONE
Written by Willy Russell, the legendary
BLOOD BROTHERS tells the captivating and
moving tale of twins who, separated at birth, grow up
on opposite sides of the tracks, only to meet again with
tragic consequences. Starring X Factor’s Niki Evans as Mrs
Johnstone, the superb score includes Bright New Day, Marilyn
Monroe and the emotionally charged hit Tell Me It’s Not True.
Few musicals have received quite such acclaim as the
multi-award winning BLOOD BROTHERS, and Bill Kenwright’s
production, having recently celebrated its 21st phenomenal
year in London, continues to enjoy standing ovations at every
devastating performance. No wonder BLOOD BROTHERS is
now ‘The musical for all time’.
