So much has happened in this span of a year right from the successful launching of the Mangalyaan to the northward shifting of the Indian Continental Plate along the Main Himalayan Thrust that sent tremors upto a magnitude of 7.9 on the Richter scale claiming thousands of lives in our neighbouring Nepal and parts of Eastern India. The ups and downs of life are part and parcel of our existence.A positive attitude towards life is what makes us deal with every situation and overcome every impediment that arrests our progress in the path of life. The winners emerge and progress forward, not by trampling others on the way but by taking along everybody towards the pinnacles of glory. The past year has been impressive and eventful for our College too. We have achieved 100% result in the University Examinations in most of the departments of our college. We have organised number of seminars, National Conference, “Infosparx”,Departmental Festivals and Annual Festival “Siesons” during the course of the year. Our TechnoSavvy students, under the guidance of our conscientious lecturers, have meticulously launched a News Bulletin through “SIES Network Television”, which archives the various college events. Our students have acquired placements in top Business Organizations of the country. We have made commendable progress in all fields uplifting solidarity and integrity of our students and staff. In this age of cut-throat competition students have to be guided to excel in every field, from academics to artistry. They have to be good orators, communicators, organisers, trustworthy, diligent workers and humble leaders. We have endeavoured to develop all these positive traits in our students; knowledge has been our tool for moulding them. But above all we have strived to prolifically develop better individuals for the society – perfect human beings who can make us proud not only by their achievements but by their benevolence , compassion and love for every being on our planet. This magazine is just another instance of the achievements of our students .Their concepts and ideas have been reflected through their literary skills. I wish the very best to all students, for a successful career and blissful life. - Dr. Rita Basu, Principal in-charge 04 CACHE 2015-16 SIES College of Arts, Science & Commerce, Nerul Convenor’s Note "Errors like straws upon the surface flow He who searches for pearls must dive below". If life was simple and if man could take as much from Nature's bounties... Then he would have been the happiest person on earth. But it is said,'As he thinketh in his heart,so he is.'In one's life nothing is transient or permanent either like the very existence of man or his purpose in life. But surely for one's Being it becomes necessary to pursue that relative word:simple & important and that is Happiness to reach that eternal. One would think if ignorance is bliss why aren't there more happy people ? Happiness is what happiness does.It is nothing more than good health and poor memory , probably that is why it is a relative term . The intrinsic nature of man is to be happy,to have peace and harmony which is nothing but the Essence of Life-Our theme for the year. We are brought up with the the value that as as we sow,so shall we reap. Keeping that in view we have tried to delve a little deeper to touch our roots to cover an article on the writings found on our forts albeit in a very small way we have tried to remember one of the forgotten languages. We have also tried to touch that intrinsic nature of man to have a little introspection and insight only to excel in our work with a thorough knowledge and strike a balance to be harmonious A heartfelt thanks to all for the cooperation given. Ms. Monica Jundre Convener Letter From the Co-Convenor Dear Readers, Welcome to our college magazine 'Cache:2014-15'. This year the key theme of the fanzine of our revered college is -'The Essence of Life'. My respected colleagues and my dear students have presented their 'take' on life. It is my turn as the Co-Convenor to scribble a succinct note about the big word called LIFE. Life! A simple four lettered word yet it defines our very existence, our presence in this world. Clinically, as long as our brain possesses the capacity to send command signals to our heart to perform its rhythmic beats, we are alive. So, can we equate this basic physiological function with the term called 'life'? It is true when we breathe, eat, drink and are merry with our dear ones around us we have life. But life itself is a magnanimous expression, a 'Cache', a treasure trove to dig in for knowledge, experiences and emotions. Even advertisements use catchy phrases like 'Life is Good'', 'Life ko thoda hike kar do' and so on. Life has so much to give to us. It gifts us our dear ones, our happiness, our little laughters and tears, and the simplicity to accept the different moments that it brings forth before us. The un-quenching thirst for knowledge and the urge not just to enhance our life but to improve that of others too, in all the ways: socially, economically and emotionally. In this marvellous voyage called life we experience joy and sorrow, love and hate, success and failure, benevolence and brutality, good and evil. But all these are just two sides of the same coin because we have something to learn out of all these opposite states and traits, as we are ultimately what we choose to be. The winner is always judged by not 'How long was one's life', but by 'How one led one's life, leaving his footprints on the sands of time for others to follow. 'So, friends lets dig in, read what heights of achievements and competence was presented by our students and how successfully our college fared through the year. Thanking You, Yours Sincerely Dr. Priyadarsini Poddar (Co-Convenor) 04 CACHE 2015-16 SIES College of Arts, Science & Commerce, Nerul Student Editor Today as I peep down from the edge of my building’s It kept prodding in my mind and Life is an endless cycle of ups and pestered me to fetch an answer… I downs… There are times that may challenge us emotionally, terrace, the sight in front of me thought to myself, is happiness leaves me mesmerized! CACHE 2015-16 SIES College of Arts, Science & Commerce, Nerul IMPRESSIONS Social Media and Happiness “Facebook may help you feel connected, but does it make you feel happy? No, according to a small new study from the University of Michigan published recently. In fact, spending time on the mega popular social media platform may be bringing you down. In a two-week study of 82 young adults, researchers at the University of Michigan; Emotion and SelfControl Laboratory used “experience sampling” to test the subjects' level of happiness and life satisfaction. Results indicated “negative shifts on both of these variables over time” said the report. The more a person used Facebook, they discovered, the greater the decline in their sense of happiness.” This is just one example and I am not here to prove anything. With this article just wanted to share a few thoughts about social media. All of us have read lots of articles discussing consequences of social media. I am not going to reiterate them here. I am also an avid, albeit a wary user of social media. One trend which troubles me is the growing efforts to show-off happiness on social media like Facebook, whatsapp and twitter. In olden days people used to show-off big houses, swanky cars and diamonds. Now the trend is dramatically tilting towards happiness. The camera-happy crowd is busier in taking a perfect group-selfie rather than enjoying the moment and the haste with which it is uploaded, underlines the priority. Sense of happiness today is more associated with reactions of other people than yourself and your close ones. The moment you have a happy moment, a beach outing, a beautiful cooking creation, a new dress, the first thought is to click it and upload it for the world rather than immerse in the moment. The pure joy of losing yourself in the delight of your child’s innocent laughter or a mesmerising sunset has been replaced with an undying urge and haste to, whatsapp it. Constant pressure to have an impressive daily profile, happy forward looking status is subconsciously taking its toll on young adults. They are looking for gratification in superficial emotions and artificial interactions rather than real-life one’s. When you post all your positive moments online, somewhere you expect your life to continue like that. Beyond all the perfect smiles and beautiful moments, lie so many moments which are not all that uploadable ones. And here lies the catch. The young generation unknowingly starts believing in only glories and fairy-tales of social media. Many a times, they do not understand the toil and tears which are a part and parcel of this real-life. The popular trend to over emphasize and exaggerate the enjoyment derived out of outing experiences, foreign trips and moments of personal lives is too childish and embarrassing at times. The not-tootransparent need to impress everybody is easily identifiable. I read a wonderful quote the other day, “We buy things we don't need, with money we don't have, to impress people we don't like.” This just highlights the psyche of most of the people around us who keep on bombarding us with the daily updates about lost weight, cakes baked and crazy face photographs and their perfect moment of bliss. The satisfaction cannot be and should not be assessed by the likes you get or the friends you have on the facebook. The pressure to be socially acceptable online can be depressing to so many teenagers and adults too. The underlying lesson here is to understand the difference between the real-life and the social media life. The illusion of happiness and façade of perfection can not give long-term fulfillment. There is a need to make use of social media for enhancement of subjective well-being rather than jeopardize it. Dr. Purvi Pujari Asst. The idea of passing away does not sound appealing to me at all. I know, someday we all will, and that someday might be any day, soon or not, but in the near future, but not me. I refrain from even remotely accepting the fact that I was born to die. I am just not comfortable with the idea. I was born 18 years ago, and thought I have had my share of I-wish-i-hadn’t-moments, I must say, I discovered something so great that astonishes me every day, the one word that is so easily thrown around by people who don’t quite grasp the complexity of it in its purest sense, life. In 18 years of my life I discovered the one emotion present in almost every aspect, being, the creation of life: happiness. So fortunate I feel to have experienced happiness in uncountable situations in life that it has left me wanting for more. Happiness in being able to get up with a roof over my head, happiness in watching sunrise early morning and exactly how the sea reflects the beautiful orange color of the sun and the trees part to make it a sight to remember. In eating the most delicious dishes that keep me salivating for more, in meeting new people who have so much to tell, in reading books so carefully brought together by people who have a new story to tell with each passing on, to be able to travel to different places around the world and gaze in awe at outstanding creations of nature and man, in learning something new each day, in wearing cloth so pretty and comfortable, that form a part of me, in participating in competitions that bring out the best in me, in doing what career I choose, in the small jokes being cracked, in the signs I listen, the brilliant movies I watch, the videos I watch, in contributing to the less fortunate, in doing my part in somehow helping who needs it the most, in sleeping on a bed that gives me utmost comfort even at night knowing I have lived a day full of surprises, beauty and challenges that make me a better person every day, and all I have to do is stay alive, and I have a world full of suprises to look out for. We live in a country where you will find a person however illiterate he might be or however qualified he may be, having chats on three topics which are very close to heart of every Indian. Those are religion, politics and eventually their very own ‘Cricket’! Yes, wherever you go, whichever public place it might be, especially commuting mediums like buses or ‘locals’, issues pertaining to the above three topics are the talk of the crowd. Amongst the above three topics, cricket is the most avidly loved topic. This is because people of all ages, i.e. toddlers to septuagenarians, all are equally adept about the sport. Everyone loves to be updated about the cricket happenings all over the world. It is the most widely played sport of the country, to such an extent that some even mistakenly refer to it as the National Sport of India! Thus, cricket has almost become a religion for we Indians, a religion which does not create a divide, instead binds us all into a single cohesive united force inspite of our differences! Now, the cricket in India is almost metaphorical to ‘Mr. Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar’. Yes, India’s very own ‘Master-Blaster’, ‘God of Cricket’ … and the list is endless! Recently, we bid adieu to this legendary cricketer and I was utterly moved by horrendous buzz it created all over the world! Truly, the country had gone mad with this ‘Sachin’ fever onto their minds! Isn’t he rightly referred to as the ‘God of Cricket’? He has so many records to his credit, some benchmarks which he has set, and some already existent broken by him! Even my 10-year-old younger brother can effortlessly chant out some of his feats, some of the laurels and accolades he has to his name, such common they have become! He also has a lot of awards and titles conferred upon him, including awards with highest honour in India. A recent addition to this list of accolades was the ‘Bharat Ratna’ award, the Republic of India’s highest civilian award, with which he managed to become the youngest person ever to be awarded with the honour. Yes! Even there he has set a record! So, who would not be in awe of such a legendary maestro? And, when such a person whose presence on cricket pitch is longed for and lauded all over the world, decides to bid a final goodbye to cricket, then ruckus is bound to happen! So, Sachin’s announcement of his final retirement from cricket after the West Indies’(WI) tour of India for a series of three ODIs and two Test matches, was followed by mixed response from people all over the country. Sachin had already retired from the other forms of international cricket, and now had chosen to retire from Test cricket as well, after his 200th match against the West Indians. This came as a shock for all Sachin fans, who never wanted their idol to retire. Some people even pleaded him to reconsider his decision and to keep going for at least a year or two. The social media was the platform through which such messages were sent to the maestro. Some people even vented out their displeasure towards this decision by chanting out slogans like “Sachin is the God of cricket, and Gods never retire!” Such was the state all over the country. But, Sachin, being firm with his decision, was never moved by such emotional pleads. Afterall, retirement from any form of sport is inevitable! And legends like Sachin retire only to give way to the budding and emerging talents to blossom into legends! So, eventually this decision was welcomed by all. People decided to bid goodbye to their stalwart with a smile and hence started mentally preparing themselves for the impending day. Sachin’s retirement had now become a topic of discussion of all the folks, young and old alike. The newspapers, FM Radio channels were 55 CACHE 2015-16 SIES College of Arts, Science & Commerce, Nerul abuzz with articles/talks reminiscent of Sachin’s glorious 24 years’ career. Memories of all the important landmarks and crossovers in his career were brought to light and celebrated with a new vigour yet again. The twitterati and people on other social networking sites also thanked the legend by sending him wishes, emotional messages, messages expressing gratitude, etc. Some online portal had undertaken to sell a few of the tickets of Sacin’s 200th Test match through their website. But, not much to my surprise, the first day of booking itself got such a humungous response that it resulted into the site’s server crash! Now you can imagine the magnitude of hype Sachin’s retirement news created! And, finally the D-day arrived. It was 16th of November, the 3rd day of the second test match between India and West Indies. The West Indians hadn’t managed to put up a respectable score in the 1st innings, so the Indian batting order, which was in much greater form than their opponents had easily taken a lead in the match by a huge margin. When the 3rd day play began, WI had seven wickets in hand, but a huge total to overhaul. The Indian bowling order had already proved their mettle in the first innings, so if it continued to be the same in the 2nd innings as well, then it was crystal clear that India would defeat the WI saving an innings. Everyone was very confident that the bowlers would end the WI’s game the same day itself. But still, each and every person kept rekindling their hopes that some magic would happen and India would confront the West Indian bowlers in the 2nd innings as well, only because they wanted their maestro to bat for one last time, and this time hit a century, which he had missed by a mere 26 runs in the 1st innings! So, with such hopes in their minds, everyone in the stadium, including a list of celebrities who had come to witness their idol’s last moments of presence on the ground, sat transfixed to their seats, and we at home were glued to our sofas! Glimpses of Sachin chasing the ball running towards the boundary and flaunting his excellent fielding skills were also a coveted site for us! And, then arrived the moment when the line of dream and reality for me and Sachin fans like me had already blurred. Yes! The Indian bowlers had yet again proved their mettle by effortlessly bowling over the entire West Indian team, curtailing their play on the same day itself. India had already won the match. But, the eyes of the crowd depicted a different picture. Of course, everybody was joyous that India had won the match by a whopping number of runs, but still the eyes of the people were moist because the gravity of the feeling of waving a final goodbye to their idol had now dawned upon them! Soon began the emotionally charged speech of the maestro where we all witnessed, for the very first time, an emotional Sachin with a lump in his throat while talking. The speech was so very breath-taking, that soon I found myself, unknowingly, pressing my palm against my eyes which were venting out their feelings through tears! It had become really difficult to resist them when the legend talked! A few minutes later, when the farewell ceremony had come to an end, a question kept revolving in my mind uncontrollably and it instigated me to ponder over it to search for answer to it. The question was, “Why was I so very grievous about Sachin’s final departure from cricket in spite of not being a huge cricket fan?”…” I mean I definitely was moved by Sachin’s impeccable personality and his grand aura ever since I was a child, but that was probably because this name was very commonly heard by me everywhere I went. But, why had it become difficult for me to control my emotions when the maestro delivered his speech. The thought had completely seized my mind and I was unable to concentrate on anything else. But very soon, I realized that the answer lied within! It lied in what I had witnessed today and what I had 56 CACHE 2015-16 SIES College of Arts, Science & Commerce, Nerul been witnessing for many years. Yes, Sachin’s impeccable personality and his aura had engulfed my mind for sure, but more than anything else, I was immensely moved by his humility, his modesty! Isn’t it rare to find a person who has scaled every height of success and reached the pinnacle of it, but yet is very well grounded? Well, I think Sachin is a rare specie in that regard! His touching the hallowed turf devotedly, over which he had erected his career, for one last time; his mentioning and thanking every person in his life during his final speech, who has contributed even the slightest amount towards his career; his getting emotional on being given the grand ‘lap of honour’ are the moments which have now become epitomes of modesty for me. So, Sachin has not only inspired me to constantly and incessantly endeavour to reach the zenith of success in my chosen field of career, but will always act as a role-model for me to ceaselessly and persistently develop my personality into a good human being! So, though it is quite late now, still I would like to make good this opportunity to convey my regards towards Sachin in the following words: “Thank you Sachin for being what you are for me! You have unknowingly taught me one of the greatest lessons of my life, without which, however successful I might have been, I would still have been a mere incomplete person! You would always remain etched in my heart forever. So, thank you once again!” -Ms. Vaidehi Vivek Padhye- FY BAF LAUGHTER- THE BEST MEDICINE. They say when you smile, you strain 17 nerves, but when you get angry you strain more than 60 nerves! Which one is better? As human beings, we are born compassionate and we have this innate liking to be happy and spread happiness. Once you conquer the art of spreading happiness, you open a door and welcome different experiences of life. Laughter is a very happy emotion! It is contagious and makes everyone around us happy too. We do not always know what it is or how to articulate it, but deep inside, there is a longing. A longing to remain happy forever! It is a calling that comes from a deeper part of ourselves. When was the last time you laughed so hard that your belly hurt and you were out of breath? That feeling is one of the most unexplainable, an ecstatic moment for anyone in their life. Imagine if we lived our lives in such moments of happiness! In our routine hectic lives, we have forgotten the true meaning of laughter and the importance it holds in a person’s life. When you see a small boy lifted in your arms, giggling cheerfully, does it not look like a thousand stars shining at the same time? There is nothing in this world as contagious as laughter! Laughter has this unique ability to cure any tension. It is indeed the BEST MEDICINE. That is the reason why a wise man has once said, “Smile, and the world smiles with you. Weep, and you weep alone!” No one gets to take their possessions with them after they die. At the end of the day, the only thing we can take with us are our memories of all those great life experiences and joyous moments that add meaning to our lives. Given this, we should rather spend our lives doing the things that will spread happiness and would give us happy memories than collecting possessions 57 CACHE 2015-16 SIES College of Arts, Science & Commerce, Nerul PAUSE FOR PAWS Jared Kintz is quoted to have once said: “You know what I like most about people? Pets.” It all starts with your much younger self walking down the street encountering a little ball of fur lying all by itself and out of curiosity with also a little mix of excitement you begin to play with it and that’s the moment you realize you would give anything to have this little bundle of joy as a companion. This is when you nag your parents to get you a pet and when they do, it is easily one of the best things you've owned. For someone who can’t communicate except in monotonous noises, having him provide to you that unconditional support by literally being there for you and make you feel better by just their innocence and over joyous persona whenever you need, is primarily what differentiates us humans from animals. Perhaps this is where we really fall back on. As we grow older, we become so busy in our daily lives and unknowingly self centered and greedy to satisfy our own materialistic demands that we sometimes fail to acknowledge someone’s presence in our life and when the same happens to us, we accept it as a part of life and move on, in search of a new, temporary companion. This is why any pet is the ideal companion for us as they are neither ever busy, nor selfish to spend time with us and devote their life in entertaining and being there for us, which is why after the death of a pet, the grief leaves a permanent void in his master’s heart. The risk of ever feeling left out and lonely almost does not exist when in company of a pet, as just by playing with them and remaining active, they play a part of a sibling, parent, friend and much more. All your gloominess vanishes away when knowing you have your pet beside you, also as emotional and sensitive as you. Some people even converse with their pets which could also be a means of opening up and most pets prove to be better listeners than humans anyway. It’s only when you have a pet that you might really rediscover this sense of purpose, that does not let you remain isolated for long, that helps you keep in mind that your constant attention is needed, wanted by someone at all times, that there is someone guarding your house and who will stand by whatever his master tells him to do, whenever he tells him to do it. Developing a relationship with your pet can be the most beautiful and calming thing for your mind, body and soul, admist the fast paced human life. A relationship that increases the longevity of your life, reduces any traces of high blood pressure, instantly changes your living style, minimizes any sort of depression or past anxiety to an extreme, a relationship that does so much for you in ways even you couldn't have imagined in, and in return for not judging you based various unnecessary criteria only asks for your presence is an enviable position to be in. You know how they say our perfect companions have no fewer than four feet? They’re right. - Anita Dhaveji - FYBMM 58 CACHE 2015-16 SIES College of Arts, Science & Commerce, Nerul The Rat(ttling) race. “If you define success by the failure of others you have gained nothing. And if you define your losses by the success of others you will live in eternal misery. The important games to win are the ones in which you advance others along the way”. -John Lee. “Enroll yourself for the poster making competition” the board outside the college reads. Similar boards bearing details of various competitions have been put up across various colleges/institutions across the city, if not country. We are now officially looking for only the best and everyone who wants to compete for it is most welcome, until the moment you lose. Then you’re just a loser. When did this really happen? To be honest, one can only guess. It would probably be right on our part to guess that man has been wanting to win over right from the early stages. Like they say, “Do we kill the predator or does it kill us?” This question has now evolved into a constant quest for victory and triumph which is now equated with survival. The world has two groups for every activity, it's now Us against Them. But competition is going to prevail among us no matter what because the unfulfilled craving we have to beat a person at something and be awarded for it cannot be taken away, and in today’s practical world, could we do without it? No. But could we concentrate on other factors like learning, growing from the process? Yes. Could we try to teach people that reaching one’s potential and developing while climbing up the ladder is utmost important too? We could always tell then what Matt Blair’s once wisely said: “If you have given your best, pushed yourself as hard as possible, and you still don’t win, rejoice in your effort. Rejoice.” And rightly so. What should matter is the journey, the destination is much later. We forget to realize watching a person give in his everything and emerge victorious, his opponent had to endure through the same amount of blood, sweat, tears to get there. Perhaps if we would all come to terms with the fact that winning isn't everything and healthy competition is best for us to survive as one, we would be able to balance our lives in a much better way than we are now. Perhaps if we wouldn't all always compete for first place but with ourselves and beat the one person who could be better than you previously were: yourself, Then the win/loss record, medals, awards, prizes would be just another acknowledgement and we could possibly term our lives fulfilling and complete. Ian Jackson rightly said “You win with Finesse, not Force.” After all the last man cannot remain standing forever, can he? Life is full of surprises. Moreover, a rollercoaster where you have no idea what is going to happen in the next moment. People say we live one life so make the best use of it. Every day is a memorable day for me.Since something or the other comes across my life. Life is a mixture of sorrow, happiness, love, anger, surprises, adventures; etc.Everyday is so exciting that it’s thrilling to know what is going to happen. I as a person have many memorable days and experiences but the one which yet takes my breath away is meeting the world famous Chef Sanjeev Kapoor. I as a person love everything about cooking. He has always been my inspiration. My ambition is to become a great chef like him. I may not be a meticulous person though trying to be one. So the story I am going to say is a story or the most wonderful thing happened to me in my entire life. This incident took place two years ago when I saw an advertisement of MATERCHEF INDIA JUNIOR on the television. I used to tell my parents ,“Mom, Dad I also want to be a part of this contest. I also want that chef coat with my name printed on it.” My parents saw my love, passion and my mere concentration towards cooking. Cooking is something that kills my boredom. Creates a grin on my face on a dull day. My walk towards happiness has always been cooking. My parents love the food prepared by me. Looking at my talent, love, craze and obsession for cooking they enrolled my name in MASTERCHEF INDIA JUNIOR. I was on the verge of completing my 13yrs of teenage. Standing in the huge line under the hot sun waiting for my chance to come. They not only see your love for cooking but also check on how you are as a person ? How do you face the camera? Whether you are interactive or not? All this happening to me was just like a dream come true. I had never thought that I would be facing all this like NEVER EVER! Somewhere in my mind and my heart I was very much happy as well as excited about what was happening. I was so amazed and excited that I cannot depict that in words. So when I participated in this contest I had cleared my first round as well as the second round with a lot of hard work and the love for cooking .I was feeling that I was almost on the verge to fulfill something that I haven’t seen in reality. As if dreams were getting conquered. I never thought that I would have completed these two rounds with ease. Then suddenly I heard a loud voice that said “LO KARLO BAAT ISSE KEHTE HAI DISH ’’ and that sound that way of appreciation was given by none other than CHEF SANJEEV KAPOOR. NIDHI NAIR- FYJC-A CACHE 2014-2015 61 CACHE 2015-16 SIES College of Arts, Science & Commerce, Nerul HOW I SEE MY FREEDOM Freedom is defined from different aspects, and according to different aspects, and according to different culture, freedom varies from culture to another. Some define freedom as a natural right, the human being is born with. Everyone wants to be free and independent from others. We are born to be free. Freedom is the right to do what one wants, live where he wants, eat what he wants, learn and choose what he wants without ignoring or harming others’ rights. How can we live free? From my point of view, we can live free by respecting others’ right to live free too. We cannot ignore the rights of the people with whom we live in the society. We cannot simply do what we want and ignore others. The idea behind freedom is to be respectful and useful to our society. Freedom is important to everyone. When freedom of opinion is not granted, the creativity of mind is killed and buried. Society is the largest and the biggest loser from this lack of creativity. Someone once said, freedom of opinion will never result in animosity among people, if there exists mutual respect. Among the most humiliating ways to punish a human, one is to deprive him from his freedom. The importance of freedom cannot be understood enough, unless it is snatched away from one! It is only in a state devoid of freedom that we appreciate and respect freedom. One best example of freedom to me is being able to do many things without any task being enforced upon me. To summarize, I would say, freedom is an innate right that human beings are born with. Nothing should threaten our freedom, deprive us from our right. At the same time, we should make sure that while exercising our freedom, we don’t snatch away somebody else’s and don’t deter them from using their freedom. There should be mutual respect towards each others’ freedom. Every Man has dreams and hopes to achieve his dreams. Behind all human effort there lies a hope for success. Man tries, plans and labours as long as there is present in his mind the faintest hope of succeeding in his attempt. This hope is what drives the man to chase his dreams. Had there been no hope, our world would not have been what it is today. Success depends on persuasion of dreams. What is success ? Success may be described as the realization of an aim. When a man is engaged in any serious work, there is present at the back of his mind, the aim and the object that he tries to attain. When the means are adequate for realizing his aim, he attains success. However, success should only be attained by fair and square means. Getting to the top by unfair means can never be called success. Your dishonesty which leads you to the top will be the very cause of your terrible downfall. Success demands the quality of persuasion that we need vision to pursue. "The glory of great men should always be measured by the means they have used to acquire it" -La Rouchefoucould. Our world is driven by the dreams of aspiring people. Had there been only failures, no one would dream any longer. They would think it to be an awful waste of time and proceed with day to day work. Take care, bye” said a father to his son, standing at the entrance of ‘The Sapphire’. The Sapphire was a posh, well decorated hotel where, usually, high-profile business meetings used to take place, meetings between businessmen, board of directors, VIPS, etc. The Sapphire was the most preferred place for professional and personal discussions. It was a huge, twenty-one storey building with a shining glass façade. It was popular among all, the locals living in that area, as well as, the tourists. At The Sapphire, meetings used to take place on a daily basis, almost. On one such Monday, as scheduled, three important, high-profile meetings were to take place between six well-known firms in The Sapphire. The rooms or halls assigned for the meetings were being cleaned and made ready by the hotel staff. Around 1- 1:30pm, in that bright, hot afternoon, the first two parties arrived for their meeting. They were respectively led into their room by the manager in charge. Then, after an hour and a half, the four other parties too arrived and were led to their heir respective rooms by the managing staff. All the six parties looked quite impressed by the look of their rooms, as well as, the whole structure of ‘The Sapphire’ . As it’s name suggests, The Sapphire was no less in beauty and charm than the real gem, Sapphire. The meetings proceeded as usual. The venue was calm and quiet. But suddenly, there began to spread smoke which came from the area of the glass façade. As glass facades are usually said to trap heat inside, chances of a fire breakout is more. As soon as the staff got an inclination of this smoke spreading, they first checked the kitchen area of the hotel. First of all, it was quite late by the time they started checking for the origin of the smoke. They checked all the places of the hotel where there are chances of a fire. Then, finally, a staff member found out that the smoke was coming from the glass façade area. Till the manager arrived at the scene, the carpet, sofas and cushions were engulfed with fire. The fire was indeed spreading very fast. The manager hurried and evacuated all the guests from the hotel. The fire department was contacted. As the people came out and were helplessly gazing at the burning floor of the hotel, they realized that one of their guests and some staff members were not to be found. Frantic searches were made for them around the place, but to no avail. Soon, the fire engines arrived. Water gushed out of their pipes which fell on the raging flames of fire, trying to subdue them. The fire fighters went inside the burning hotel in search of the two missing people. While the guest was found in an unconscious state, the staffer was nowhere to be found. It took the fire officers about two and a half hours to extinguish the fire that had engulfed five floors of The Sapphire. By the time the fire died down, the hotel premises was crowded with people. The news of the fire at The Sapphire spread as fast as the fire itself among the people. People passing by, people living near by, journalists, police, ambulance, all arrived at the scene. The reporters and journalists were providing live coverage of the incident to their respective news channels. Ambulance were rushing the injured to hospitals and the police officers were trying their level best to control the ever increasing crowd. The people were aghast at the sight of The Sapphire standing tall, but no more beautiful and elegant as before. The once magnificent, wonderful hotel ‘The Sapphire’ was now nothing but a damaged, burnt, and black structure. The manager and the hotel staff were left speechless at this incident. Soon, the owner of The Sapphire too arrived, but with a dead-pan expression on his face. To his great disappointment, his ‘The Sapphire’, that was once beautiful, shining, decorated with bright and stainless, aqua blue coloured glass 65 CACHE 2015-16 SIES College of Arts, Science & Commerce, Nerul façade or better to say ‘The death façade’, was now just a charred structure. There was a lot of noise, voices of the policemen, people chattering about the incident and the painful cries of the families of the deceased, with their young ones simply looking on with their wide open eyes, confused. They just knew this much that they are in a crowd with their families, minus their fathers. However enchanting the look of The Sapphire used to be, all mainly due to its glass façade, incidents, especially life-taking ones, can happen anytime and anywhere. No one has any control on the heat of the sun or has the power to bring one back from the dead, but certainly, after this incident it is evident that the beautiful shining glass facades are the main reasons for life taking incidents. -Sayali Chiplunkar- FYJC- A. AN ADORNING EXPERIENCE…. I still remember that night. It was a Saturday night. After our dinner which was indeed delicious, we went to our rooms. My room was next to the terrace door. While rubbing my eyes I saw a beautiful light coming from the terrace door. I was dressed in my night suit which was a bit ugly and was not at all liked by me. My hair was open. As soon as I reached the terrace I saw a wonderful, marvelous, gorgeous sky with plenty of stars. The splendid smile on my face conveyed the feelings of my heart. I went and lied on the terrace floor gazing at the natural beauty of the sky. The sky seemed magical. The dark blue, black, light blue colours were just mixed with each other indicating the people of all religion celebrating unity. Looking at this natural scenic beauty I thought the night was a beautiful, gorgeous, attractive lady was wearing a black gown which had shining stars imprinted on it. It was as if I was watching a romantic movie on the big screen of the universe. Suddenly, there was a change in the theme. Now the picture was indicating a dark, dangerous but comical scene in the sky. The black colour was spreading everywhere and the stars were shining brightly. I imagined myself asleep on the cloud. I was about to fall asleep when I saw a star falling of the sky. I have heard that when we make a wish when a star falls from the sky our wish is fulfilled. And just enjoying the beauty of the night I fell asleep. Sunday morning when I woke up I saw my mom and dad in front of me. I shared the wonderful experience I had watching the sky full of stars. I was so happy and awestruck the entire day that I decided to write down my experience. I was very happy to experience such beauty and look forward to experience many more like them. -Sayali Chiplunkar- FYJC- A. 66 CACHE 2015-16 SIES College of Arts, Science & Commerce, Nerul UNITY IN DIVERSITY India is a country rich in diversities. I felt great, and was very excited about my college life. The first day of college, for which I had been eagerly waiting, was knocking on my door. But what was the good news? A day before the start of this wonderful journey, I was very tensed and worried. I read the whole of Times Of India three times, though some news were beyond my comprehension. Would this update my English? Being a vernacular medium student, I was very concerned about my English. Various questions were troubling my mind. Will I be able to converse with the teachers properly? Will they help me in my difficulties like my school teacher? How will my new friends be? I was also concerned about ragging, rowdiness of boys that usually happens in colleges. All these things disturbed me in my sleep. There wouldn't be any friend of mine... What was happening to me? The girl who was waiting to be in college for so long was now fretting about it. A place where my aspirations would be fulfilled, where teachers are like sun who would show me direction on the right path. And now, I was doubting everything to be possible. Finally the day arrived. At sharp 12 noon, I reached the college, searched for my classroom and sat on the first bench. At 12.10, Mrs Cassie, our class teacher came in and talked with us on general topics. She seemed to be quite nice. I felt my nerves getting a little relaxed. She asked us about our hobbies, dreams, etc. Then, every teacher introduced themselves to us. They were treating us like their children. In the recess, I also interacted with my classmates, I shared my tiffin with them. They were not the same as my school friends, but they were quite good. As a book lover, I also went to see our college library. It was huge with thousands of books. I inquired about the library rules. In the end, I was quite satisfied with the way lectures were given. Then, our Principal madam told us to see the notice boards before leaving. I rushed towards the notice board and to my disappointment, I had not gotten IT as a subject. Tears welled up in my eyes and thus spoiled my whole day but later I reconciled. I felt that Hindi is also a good subject, I was very much familiar with it. In fact, it would help me in securing better grades. Then I started for my home and yes, there was no ragging or misbehaviour of any form, throughout the day. My mom was also surprised and relieved to see my back with a face glowing with happiness. Everybody laughed about the way I was behaving that morning and now, I laughed too. - Name _____________________ MY EXPERIENCE IN A STORM That was perhaps one of the most memorable days in my life. It happened in the month of May. I went to spend the day with one of my friends. Three other friends also joined us. At around 5 o'clock in the evening, we went for a walk as the day was unbearably hot. We were sitting in the nearby park, chatting and gossiping. Nature was still and hushed. The park was quite crowded because the day, being sultry, people wanted to get some relief outside their homes. Suddenly, the sky became dark and a strong wind started blowing. The powerful force of the wind was full of dust. People started running helter-skelter. The dust Storm obstructed our vision. We could not see 69 CACHE 2015-16 SIES College of Arts, Science & Commerce, Nerul anything, only the noise of the frightened voiced could be heard. Terrible sounds of the breaking of the branches of the trees were also heard from different directions. We took shelter on the verandah in a nearby house and began to pray for the horrible storm to get over. Some of the roof tops of the temporary huts of the construction workers were blown away. The streets were absolutely clear. Everybody had taken shelter in some place or the other. Soon, it started raining. It was a heavy downpour with thunder and lightning. After sometime, the rain subsided and the moon started peeping out in the clear sky. The demon's destruction gradually started opening up in front of our eyes. It was total pandemonium all over. So many uprooted trees, So many broken houses with sad, helpless faces could be seen as victims of nature's might. This was the worst dust ever experienced by me. We knew our parents would be worried, so we made our journey towards home. On our way back, we could see signs of destruction all around. At certain places, the roads were blocked by fallen trees causing inconvenience to the traffic. Relief work had already been started by the government organizations and the fire brigade. People were helping each other too. But the extremely hot day had become quite cool. A true image of unity in diversity is presented by the people of India. There is a wide variety in here in every field ranging from sports, food habits, language and customs and traditions. India is a secular nation. It is clearly stated in the preamble of Indian constitution.we have different religions in India. Apart from Hinduism we have the followers of Budhism, Jainism, Islam, Sikhism, Christianity and Parsis. But Hindus form the greater majority.Emotional unity plays its own part. The name of Bharat Mata brings Indian people closer and closer together. India is a multi-cultural, multi-racial, multi-lingual and multi-ethnic society. It is a land of diversity. People of different creeds, customs, cultures and traditions live here. They have their different festivals, manners and lifestyle.India is proud to have a rich cultural heritage. From Kashmir to Kanyakumari and from Nagaland to Mumbai, Hindi is understood as the National language of India. Though different regions have their different regional affiliation they all are Indians. People call themselves Bihari, Punjabi, Kashmiri, Marathi, Gujarati, but they feel proud to say that they are the Indians. They all are proud to say that their mother is same - MOTHER INDIA. The belief on spirituality and cultural power has played an important role in binding the people of India together in a bond of unity. Freedom of expression has also a strongest component of India's unity in diversity. All these factors are deeply associated with the cultural diversity and unity of India. My mother always has one thing ready to begin describing me with, “This girl doesn’t have feet, she has wheels!” Obviously, she has never been too appreciative of my fondness for travelling. However, my travels have taught me lessons that no classroom can, and I also owe the most unforgettable event of my life to a school trip. The first time I travelled out of the country was during a school holiday to Europe, in the summer of 2011. Every moment I spent in that fortnight will forever be etched in my mind, but no experience could be closer to my heart than my time at the Eiffel Tower. As we all know, the Eiffel Tower is a commemorative structure, built in 1889, the year that marked the hundredth anniversary of the French Revolution. Even today, it is the most commonly visited monument in the world. The Eiffel Tower is a humongous structure and hence can be seen from all of Paris. Even today, four years later, I remember my first glimpse of the Tower, and it left me speechless. The area right under the Tower is always hustling and bustling with people selling titbits, some waiting, and some getting checked by the security officials. As I got closer and closer, my heartbeat began increasing. A life takes you up to the Eiffel Tower’s second level in a matter of a few minutes but those minutes seem like endless hours. Even if there’s no one around to die for, the wind blowing around the Eiffel Tower is so romantic that it can make you fall for itself, for the city, in the blink of an eye. I found the Eiffel Tower visit to be quite liberating, as it makes you forget all your pain, worries, fear and fatigue at once. The atmosphere is such that you feel as if your feet can’t find the ground, as if you’re just floating about here and there. We spent nearly forty to forty-five minutes there, and all I could do was just stare at the beauty all around. Beside the Tower are splendid, lush green gardens and a museum as well. That sight comes back again and again, and has never failed to lighten my mood whenever I feel gloomy. Just like the comfort William Wordsworth talked of in his famous poem “Daffodils” that said“For oft when on my couch I lie, In vacant or in pensive mood, They flash upon my inward eye. Which is the bliss of solitude” The moments that I felt seeing, staring, relaxing and also a little disbelieving, never be less memorable than any award, honour or other happiness. As this incident happened in front of us, I and my mother feared a lot. But my father went to lift the bike and help that boy. Meanwhile me and my mother went to nearby houses and informed the people about incident and also brought water for that boy. Many people gathered at the place of incident. Somebody brought auto. Then my mother and some other men had put that boy in auto and took him to hospital. We also went behind them. Much blood was flowing from the head and hands of that boy. Because of God’s blessings only, doctor said that he was out of danger. But if we had not taken him to the hospital, then it would have lead to the loss of his life. Meanwhile someone had called the parents of that boy. They immediately reached to the hospital. They were feared very much. But when they saw their boy they relaxed. They gently thanked my father and other people. Because the case was an accident there was, police enquiry. After inspection we came to know about the truth. Truth was that the boy was not even of 18 years old and the bike which he was riding was of his friend’s and not of his own. The Police first caught his friend & then the boy was met with an accident as he was driving the bike without licence and had not informed the parents. This is not the only boy who didn’t follow traffic rules. But there are many boys who ride their bikes fast, as well as use headphones for hearing music. Some boys drink and drive the vehicles. Due to craze of speed and breaking of traffic rules they etc. loose their valuable life. These boys also trouble the people surrounded them & their, friends etc. After that, we all returned to our home thanking God and with the spiritual feelings of helping someone. The survey, The Facts Of Life, explodes the myth that life for previous generations of children was harder than today's. Confidence in the future has been replaced by "powerlessness", felt not just by those from deprived backgrounds but people in the affluent higher bands. The aim of the research was to highlight how childhood has changed over the past 20 years. According to nine out of 10 adults today's children will witness more crime and violence than a generation ago and 80 per cent feel children have fewer safe areas in which to play. Seven out of 10 adults think that children are now less likely to have a stable family life and just over half think that children are less likely to have a loving home than a generation ago. Nearly three in five adults believe children today worry about their parents splitting up in comparison to 11 per cent of their own childhood fears being about parental break- up. Statistics seem to bear this out. The divorce rate is six times higher than 30 years ago and the proportion of babies born outside marriage went from 6 per cent in 1961 to 32 per cent today. One in five dependent children lives with a lone parent compared to one in 13 in the 1970s. Financially, opinion is almost equally divided over whether children will have enough money to enjoy a reasonable lifestyle or own a home of their own. While young people in the 1990s begin their adult lives with more educational qualifications than their parents and grandparents, the gap between the most and least advantaged local authority areas has grown wider. Views on education are split along class lines, with people in the lower income bands more inclined to say children these days are likely to get a good education and well resourced schools. Just over half the adults questioned - more than 1,000 - think children today are unlikely to have a rewarding career and this comprises a higher proportion of those working full-time to those not working. "The findings of this survey paint a depressing picture of adults' perception of the future for today's children. It is widely believed that children no longer grow up in a secure environment with the prospect of a permanent job if they do well at school," said Roger Singleton, senior director of Barnardo's. There is now a consensus of opinion throughout the country that growing up is tougher in the 1990s. "The confidence and optimism of previous generations has been replaced by a feeling of powerlessness." How beautiful she looks!” the word, beautiful, in this context, means being beautiful in terms of looks, but is that the real beauty? Some people are god-gifted with a heart-shaped face, fair skin, wide eyes, perfect nose and a rosebud mouth. Such people are considered as beautiful. Then, what about those who do not possess some of these perfect features? Are they also not God’s creation? The fact is that they maybe even more beautiful as compared to people with good features. They might not be beautiful in terms of looks but they might have a caring nature and a loving heart. Most people are not good looking but they possess a personality so attractive that people are drawn towards them. Nelson Mandela, for example, was adored by millions of people worldwide. He had such a forceful charishma that people quite often forgot his colour and looks. Real beauty is not about being beautiful by looks alone. Appearances are always secondary and deceptive. What matters most is the person’s character and nature. This is what is referred to as inner beauty. People who have this kind of beauty, care about their fellow men and are willing to make sacrifices for them. They are least bothered about their appearances and are content with the looks they are born with. Many a time, people who look good may be too much self-obsessed. Such people are often so conscious about their appearance that they fail to appreciate the other beautiful things in life. They only associate themselves with other attractive persons and are often dismissive of unattractive people. But, it is a fact that most people do not look beyond the face. It is automatically assumed that beautiful people are good at heart. But like the wicked stepmother in the famous fable ‘Snow-White And The Seven Dwarfs’, most beautiful people are so vain about their looks that they are uncaring about other people’s feelings and think nothing about hurting them. At the same time, beauty is appreciated by people in different ways; some perceive Kareena Kapoor as the epitome of beauty whereas there are others who think, the dusky skinned Bipasha Basu, equally beautiful. Thus everyone has their own idea of beauty. It is therefore aptly said that ‘Beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder ‘. Beauty is a matter of opinion and does not take one’s attractiveness into account. The concept of beauty varies greatly from person to person. For some, it is a beautiful face whereas for others, it is a caring heart. But in today’s fast-paced world, people seldom take the time to assess a person’s character and nature and so people are often judged by their looks alone. The question here is - do we try to find the goodness in others, ignoring their imperfections? It depends upon us how broad minded we are in accepting people with imperfect features. We must look within ourselves, face our own imperfections whereby we will be able to find beauty in God’s every creation. Now it is for us to decide what matters the most – good looks or inner beauty? They forget their promises, which is an apt example of 'easier said than done'. It is not only that leaders and politicians are included in this category but students also make big promises to their parents that they will study for a particular number of hours or score well. But none of these things are fulfilled. Usually, kids tell their parents that they love them, but they don't display it. The main difference between a man and an animal is that man has some knowledge but an animal has no knowledge of anything.Knowledge is the godmother of all discoveries and inventions. Mostly, man gains knowledge through observation and experimentation. At first man starts with certain theory and sometimes even without any prerequisite or predetermination. In other words,he does some project at random and the results may be positive or negative. Einstein, for example, was actually not working for discovering the atom when he stepped upon it just by chance. Even when Newton saw the falling apple, then thoughts rushed into his mind which led to the discovery of the theory of gravitation. All the modern technology which has made certain nations so powerful economically and militarily is all based on knowledge. In countries like the USA research in all fields of science is done on regular basis and that is one of the secrets of her success. India has also done great research in certain fields, like in the fields of information technology and telecommunications and she is now reaping rich harvest for this. So, in short we shall have to agree to what Bacon said four centuries ago that knowledge is power. All human progress and perhaps even man’s very existence on the globe depends upon his retention and growth of knowledge in various fields for positive and constructive purposes because if knowledge is used for negative purposes, it can create a havoc in someones life. It is a glorious morning, so an unforgetful day. In the morning people go for a walk, And they go on without any talk. The colourful butterflies fly around the flowers, Embraces red, pink, and purple petals. It is a glorious morning, It rolls up every day from behind the horizon, Each morning different from the other. Everybody is happy; working with joy, Sharing sorrows; telling others to enjoy.
