By the 1820’s, the word of vast stands of virgin timber in the Pine Creek Valley spread. Twenty years later 145 individual sawmills had been in operation in the Pine Creek watershed, however, the flood of 1832 destroyed many. By 1920, hardly a marketable tree was left standing; the majestic pines had been cut and floated down Pine Creek for use as tall ship masts, the hemlock’s bark was used in tanning leather and the hardwoods fueled the Industrial Revolution thus expanding the American frontier. Long ago, the rugged shorelines and swift waters of Pine Creek were traveled for hundreds of years via footpath and canoe. The Seneca Indians used the Pine Creek Path as a connection between the Great Shamokin Path (along the Susquehanna River) and the Iroquois settlements along the Genessee River in New York. istory of the Pine H Creek Rail Trail Draper’s Super Bee Apiaries, Inc.
