The Festival – from past to present
I went to my first agricultural show at East Guildford, not
far from where the East Guildford railway station is now. It
was pretty good, very countrified and everyone was enjoying
themselves. There were a lot of horses and a few sheep, pigs and
vegetables. There was a greasy pole with a leg of mutton and a
sovereign on top and I saw the natives climbing it. A native called
Jingi speared a loaf of bread at eighty yards. Afterwards they had
racing on the Woodbridge flats. That was where they used to have
sloughing matches. Everyone had to go to the fields with their
ploughs all in pieces, put them together and then start. Each one
had to plough an acre and the best and the quickest got a prize.
My uncle James Jones took the prize three years running.
Oliver Jones interviewed at his home in Swan Street, Guildford 1927
Guildford was declared a municipality in 1871 and
granted its own crest of anchor, sheath and grapes.

in training our troops for WWI.
In 1912, the Commonwealth Government
purchased a 203 acre property on the
south bank of the Helena River. Here they
established Remount Depot to break and
train horses for use in light horse, artillery
and transport units.

The Guildford Goal
In September 1840, the
Perth Gazette (9/9/1840)
published a letter
saying “Guildford has
found a very serious
inconvenience in having
no lock up cell or Stocks in a place
which is the focus to all parts of the Colony and containing
three public houses, as riotous behaviour was causing
concern.”
In October 1840 Henry Triggs prepared plans to build the
Gaol, the first government building in Guildford, and costed
the material at £125.00 for two cells a Constable’s rooms and
a pair of stocks at £6.00. John Wellbourne was appointed to
do the work at a cost of £80.00. The building was completed
in 1841. There was no evidence that the stocks were produced.
The building also doubled as a Post Office.
Once opened, it was used to house people accused of great
and small crimes. People charged with greater crimes,
or receiving sentences of more than a few weeks, were
transferred to Perth or Fremantle Gaols.
