Message
John Watson
I hope you were able to attend the most recent convention, held at the Hyatt Lost
Pines in Bastrop, Texas. The chairman of the convention, Mike McFarland, and
his committee did a great job of putting together a tremendous event that provided
value for all that were there.
During the event, I talked about our theme for the upcoming year, “Reaching
Within and Expanding our Reach.” “Reaching Within” refers to the TMBA’s
efforts to tap into all the talent that exists in our industry. This includes Executive
Management, Operations Management, Loan Servicing personnel, Loan Officers
and all of the other positions in the various facets of our industry. To the extent
that we get every talented person involved in our association, the industry in
which we work and the consumers we serve will be that much better off.
“Expanding our Reach” emphasizes the importance of our association building
relationships with other real estate related industries and trade groups. These
include the Texas Association of Realtors, Texas Land Title Association, Texas
Builders Association, Texas Bankers Association and many others. These
relationships are meaningful to our legislative efforts and can serve our industry in
many practical ways.
Within the committee structure of the TMBA there are many efforts in place to
accomplish the goals of this year’s theme. I am asking you to make time to
be engaged in one or more of these efforts by being an active participant on
one of our committees. Your involvement is good for your career and will serve
our industry. There are no prerequisites to be involved, so there should be no
hesitation to step up. To help you decide your area of interest, I have listed our
committees and a very short description of what they are working on this year.

Create an educational program to show the members what service on the board
is like, shadowing other committee chairs and getting a front row, hands on view
of how to become the next group of leaders for the TMBA.
Develop relationships with outside entities such as TAR, IBAT, TBA, TLTA, the
TDSML, OTS and other regulatory agencies.
Local MBA Liaison
Contact local MBA Presidents and identify a key local board member as the
liaison to TMBA. Encourage participation of TMBA events and plan to have a
TMBA committee or board member attend one meeting annually for each local
MBA.
Membership
Reviews membership applications prior to submitting new applicants to the
Board. Actively solicit at least 35 new members and research a proposal for
consideration on a Society of individuals who are not members offering a forum
for new licensing trainees, as well as get current members more engaged.
Political Action Committee (PAC)
The PAC provides funds and direction for action to be taken on legislative
initiatives. Promotes TMBA legislative objectives and encourages total member
involvement of contributions from each mortgage banker in the State of Texas.

Review legislation passed during the 2009 Legislative Session that affects residential
mortgage lending, and identify which sections of the Deskbook need to be revised.
Regulatory/Compliance
Maintain the Texas Mortgage Lending Law & Practices Deskbook as a convenient
and authoritative reference manual through periodic updates after each legislative
session; monitor the Texas mortgage banking industry and post updates regarding key
developments on the Association’s website; confer with the General Counsel and other
executive officers to encourage a better understanding of state and federal regulations
affecting Texas mortgage lending practices and ultimately, to promote compliance
among all members of the TMBA.
Secondary
Primarily responsible for planning and coordinating the program (topics and speakers)
of the annual Secondary conference.
Seminar
Primarily responsible for planning and coordinating the program of the annual Seminar,
as well as increasing attendance to exceed 200-225 by attracting loan originators and
corporate mid managers.
Servicing
Primarily responsible for planning and coordinating the program (topics and speakers)
and for soliciting event sponsors for an annual servicing focused educational
conference.
Warehouse Lending
Keep members abreast of the current trends and changes in warehouse lending, as
well as bring new entrants into the warehouse lending business through participation
with existing lenders or establishing facilities within their organizations.


TMBA’s current efforts in providing
an approved licensing program
– stay tuned!
The Texas Mortgage Bankers Association is taking a
significantly large role in working with our regulators and all
mortgage lenders to ensure the continued strength of our
residential real estate markets. We plan to assume the lead in
providing lenders with their pre-licensing education requirements
under the SAFE Mortgage Licensing Act signed into law this year.
TMBA is also working to develope and provide approved several
other licensing programs in the near future.
As the third largest mortgage lending association in the
nation, we are in the best position to manage this endeavor.
Our members originate more than $35 billion annually and our
membership represents those who promote fair and ethical
lending practices.
