else about! Both were critical to the client, had
a good result, were fast paced, and involved

were foundations for two kinds of work I have

his way home, called to let me know of
the photo opportunity.
When I arrived, Daniel Faltermaier
was testing a mixture for making giant
soap-film bubbles in a parking lot near
the Columbus Metropolitan Library.
The fact that Faltermaier was
working in front of a black-and-white
mural of silent-film actors Greta
Garbo and John Gilbert added an
artistic flair to the image.
love the surreal quality of the
photo of Parish Weatherspoon,
5, of Columbus, running through
the mist from the fountain at
Bicentennial Park at sunset. Parish
and his family were enjoying the
park on a warm spring day.
Using a telephoto lens to compress the scene, I shot into the
sunset to illuminate the water and
mist and capture the silhouette.
The photo embodies childlike
wonder and playfulness, which
appeals to me.

Helping hand

urphy Vetter, 11, is the first
special-needs child to play
football in the Olentangy Youth
Athletic Association, an extracurricular sports league in the
Olentangy school district.
The path to the football field,
however, hasn’t been an easy
one. The Vetters once feared that
Murphy, who is autistic and has
Down syndrome, might have to be
institutionalized because of cuts

in funding for Medicaid benefits.
The Vetters and other parents
sued the Ohio Department of
Mental Health and the
Department of Job and Family
Services in federal court,
arguing that the state was
violating their right to obtain
such benefits. The Parents
League for Effective Autism
Services won the case, and the
state settled in late 2011,
providing coverage to 123
children, including Murphy.
Still, nothing comes easy for the
young man — including football.
Official Don Alexander, however,
lent a helping hand to Murphy —
a free safety for the Liberty Bulldogs — as he set up on defense.
It was uplifting to see others
interact with Murphy, and I think
this photograph helped capture
that.
