Bontleng Futsal Court and Community Development Centre “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.” Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi 2 PROJECT PROFILE Fuel the Passion .....Feel the Drive. About Us What is Futsal? Since the early 1970s, Mennonite Ministries and the African Indigenous Churches of Botswana have been partnered to bring relief, development, and Bible teaching to our communities. Now, a new partnership with Pula Sports Development Association is building a world-class futsal court on a highly visible central park in Bontleng, Gaborone. Located beside a number of popular bars, this area will provide a healthy and productive alternative as a place for social gatherings. Futsal is the official FIFA 5-a-side game, the globally recognized youth development model. Futsal is recognized as the ideal training game for skills, technical/tactical and decision making development. Brazil, the most successful nation in football history, uses futsal as their development model; it provides a fun, holistic and thorough breeding ground for top footballers. Inclusive sport for both boys and girls Top-tier training for high-level players Ideal for schools and community Our team is comprised of young adults who are community leaders in Gaborone, active in organising recreational football, as well as at their churches, schools and workplaces. Bontleng Village Development Chair Martin Mogodi and Bontleng Town Councilor Kemelo Olebogeng are also leaders through service in their community. Located beside a number of popular bars, this area will provide a healthy and productive alternative as a place for social gatherings. Community Impact We are building a world-class futsal court on a highly visible, centrally-located park in Bontleng, Gaborone. This will serve as a focal point of the community, providing opportunities for more structured play for local children, a useful facility for the physical education programs of nearby schools, a quality training ground for aspiring young football players, and a place of recreation for other athletes of all ages and abilities. The facility is also set up with multiple volleyball and basketball courts. A futsal court in the heart of Bontleng will provide a communal space for local residents to meet, around a quality sports facility for the physical development of people of all ages. Sports development for children Alternative to the nearby bars for teens and adults Beautified space, ideal for social events. As a place of focus in Bontleng, we will also develop the park around the court, planting trees, building places to sit and meet, and BONTLENG FUTSAL AND COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT PROJECT MENNONITE MINISTRIES IN BOTSWANA PO Box 33, Gaborone, Botswana 3 PROJECT PROFILE Partners Pula Sports Development Association Pula Sports Development Association is a nonprofit, youth sports entity registered in Botswana. Through Love and Logic, our longterm, plus-sport youth education strategy, we use the power of sport to address the various beliefs and behaviours that are at the centre of reckless conduct among many of our young people. The idea is to nurture positive, impactful and sustainable change in target communities by starting from the grassroots. We see a generation of young Batswana using sport as a means with which to uplift their communities. We urge NGO’s, private firms and public institutions to recognise the important social value of sport and to explicitly commit to the idea of using sport as part of national development programming in Botswana. When you come to play normal soccer, it’s easy if you have come from Futsal.” ~ Ronaldo (Brazil) "In Argentina, when I was a young boy, I used to play a lot of Futsal on the street and with Newell's Old Boys. It was a really fun game that's helped me a great deal.” ~ Lionel Messi (Argentina) “During my childhood in Portugal, all we played was futsal. The small playing area helped me improve my close control, and whenever I played futsal I felt free. If it wasn't for futsal, I wouldn't be the player I am today.” ~ Cristiano Ronaldo (Portugal) BONTLENG FUTSAL AND COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT PROJECT MENNONITE MINISTRIES IN BOTSWANA PO Box 33, Gaborone, Botswana 6 PROJECT PROFILE The Bontleng Futsal Court project is the ideal opportunity for firms with a sophisticated approach to corporate social responsibility to reaffirm their commitment to sustainable youth and community development.
