2 / AMERICAN ANTIQUITIES JOURNAL Volume 14, Spring/Summer 2007 Enjoy your next road trip to one of our 500+ client cities. Let this be your guide for shopping, dining, lodging, recreation, entertainment & historic points of interest for the AMERICAN HERITAGE TOURIST. www.AmericanAntiquities.com PUBLISHED & PRINTED IN THE USA ABOUT THE COVER By Nancy Wilson As a child I remember having a few things around the house that were forbidden. The lamps on the front cover had a huge imaginary “Do Not Touch” label on them. They sat quietly on my parents’ dresser, their alluring eyes taunting me to come and play. I never succumbed to that temptation, and now I’m glad I didn’t. I have since learned that they are Royal Copley figurines. They are in fantastic shape, with no nicks or cracks caused by a careless child’s hands. Although I have seen the figurines various places, I have never seen them in lamp form anywhere. Joe Devine, author of Collecting Royal Copley plus Royal Windsor & Spaulding, says Spaulding China did not make any lamps. So these two figurines from the Oxford Assortment, “Royal Copley Pottery with a Pedigree,” must have been purchased and applied to lamp bases by another company. I must have been too young to remember when they came into our house. It seems they were always there. The bottom of the lamp bases are marked ‘S.S.N.Y. 610.’ I have no idea what that means. My parents had roots in New York State, and perhaps they purchased the lamps while there on vacation visiting relatives. Perhaps there’s no reference to New York at all in those letters. Also I’m not sure the shades are original. I do remember that my parents’ room didn’t have the lavender color scheme until the mid-to-late 50’s. So here I am with these lamps that conjure up such pleasant memories. I don’t need them, but do I really want to sell them? I’m not so sure. Editor’s Note : There is an article on Royal Copley elsewhere in this issue. Originally head vases were manufactured for the floral industry and were made in many different styles. The early head vases seem quite plain as compared to later designs with glamorous additions like hats, faux pearl necklaces and earrings, gloves, hair bows, eyelashes, and even textiles. There were many wholesalers/importers of head vases in the United States. Originally selling for a couple dollars, many are now worth hundreds, some worth thousands. Lady head vases first appeared in the years prior to World War II. Then during the war the American ceramics industry received a boost by the ban put on Japanese, German, and Italian imports. 4) Exhausted Rooster Antiques & Collectibles Mall (AM) 1903 S. Another identifying mark that might be found is a dab of paint the company used for inventory control near the pour hole. Eugene Freedman founded what was to become one of the largest head vase manufacturers in Milwaukee WI in 1959. He soon joined up with a spin-off wholesale merchandising company, N. Shure Co. The name was shortened to N.S.Co, then Enesco. At that time located in Elk Grove IL, under the Samson name in 1933; and UCAGCO, United China & Glass Co., one of the oldest beginning in 1850. Ceramic Arts Studio, begun in 1941, originally sold hand thrown pots made by the company founder and artist Lawrence Rabbitt. Rueben Sand, business manager for the company, secured an excellent network of distribution, such as Marshall Field stores, in Chicago and other major cities, and grew steadily until during the 1950s Ceramic Arts Studio was making around 500,000 figurines a year. In 1942 Rabbitt left the firm, and one woman, Betty Harrington, became responsible for the design of almost every figurine at Ceramic Arts Studio, including its head vases. They were then painted in brilliant colors by a mostly female team of artists. As an aside, the company is cred- by the 1980s the company had locations throughout the US, into Canada, Puerto Rico, Hong Kong, and Europe. Enesco head vases made in Japan were marked exclusively with paper labels. The National Potteries Corporation (Napco) was located in Bedford OH in 1938. Irwin Garber, who later founded INARCO, joined the company in the mid 40s and led Napco’s development of head vases, which carried a variety of marks, some transfer marks, some paper labels. The paper labels can be found with various wording, “Napco Originals by Giftware,” National Potteries Co., Cleveland OH Made in Japan,” and “Napcoware, Import Japan.” Irwin Garber founded INARCO in 1960 in Cleveland OH as an importer of ceramic and glass floral containers and giftware. Early marks used by INARCO were “Cleve Ohio,” “Japan,” and one with a globe. Samuel Krivit founded his company, Samson Import, in 1933. The company originally imported ceramic and stoneware vases. When Samuel’s son, Jerome, created Reliable Glassware & Pottery Company, or Relpo, it became the marketing company for Samson Import. After Samuel retired, son Jerome headed both companies and, making frequent trips to Japan, developed quite an inventory of floral containers, which included more than a dozen varieties of head vases. An assortment of transfer marks and paper labels included all segments of the company … “Reliable Glassware & Pottery, Inc.,” “Relpo,” and Samson Import Co.” United China & Glass Co., Inc. is one of the oldest companies to import head vases. Originally called Abe Mayer & Co. when he founded it in 1850, during the 1930s the UCAGCO trademark appeared. The company worked with many Japanese potteries for the ceramic items it imported. UCAGCO head vases are known for their high quality and excellent finish. Both transfer marks and paper labels were applied. One cannot discuss head vases without mentioning the early and unmistakably styled head vases from Betty Lou Nichols Ceramics out of California. Launched during WWII, the company artists used innovative techniques to add ruffled skirts and curled hair to head vases t o emanate the Gay 90s. Betty Lou Nichols head vases used larger hats and longer eyelashes than most, and featured hand-painted marks on the base. Many were given ladies’ names. Because of lack of enforcement of copyright infringements, vases began arriving in the US after the war looking remarkably like Betty Nichols’, but lacking the same quality. The company closed in 1962. There were many other familiar names in the industry, like Royal Copley, Lefton, Hull, and McCoy that have also released head vases. Many were not the glamour girl types. Many were religious figures, some animals, some cute little children, clowns and many more. Head vases have been widely reproduced, and new models are being manufactured for today’s gift shops. The collector must know a little something about head vase history when gathering only vintage head vases. But if one just likes the look and light-spirited nature of head vases, there’s nothing wrong with purchasing reproductions (of course at a lesser price than vintage originals) or even new designs. A great visual source for head vase identification is www.headvasemuseum.com, where you will find head vases grouped according to manufacturers, with marks noted, and with a range of prices for each. There are also books solely about the collecting phenomenon that is head vases. 10 / AMERICAN ANTIQUITIES JOURNAL Volume 14, Spring/Summer 2007 OHIO AMERICAN ANTIQUITIES JOURNAL Volume 14, Spring/Summer 2007 / OHIO CITIES, INSETS AND PAGE NUMBERS Akron Alexandria Anna Arcanum Ashland Attica Atwater Avon Bainbridge Baltic Barnesville Bellefontaine Bellville Belpre Berlin Bluffton Bolivar Branch Hill Bridgeport Brookfield Cairo Cambridge Canal Winchester Canton Carroll Carrollton Castalia Cedarville Chagrin Falls Chardon Chesapeake Chillicothe Cincinnati Circleville Cleveland Clifton Clyde Columbiana Columbus Dayton Defiance Delaware Delta Dennison Dover Duncan Falls East Liverpool Elmore Fairborn Findlay Gallipolis Grand Rapids Granville Grove City Hanoverton Harmony Hartville Hillsboro Holland Huber Heights Jamestown Kettering Lakewood Lancaster Laura Lebanon Leesburg Lewisburg Lithopolis Logan AKRON/CANTON GRANVILLE/NEWARK WAPAKONETA NORTH DAYTON MANSFIELD SANDUSKY AREA AKRON/CANTON AVON HILLSBORO/WASH.
