The foundation provides key resources including basic necessities (medical, dental, food, clothing, and family crisis assistance), scholarships for student enrichment programs, educational grants, and recognition programs. Socorro Slater, a Kyrene secretary, learned of a family whose five children shared only one pair of shoes. As a result, each child attended school just one day per week. She took it upon herself to gather donations of gently used clothing and shoes which she distributed from the trunk of her car. Later she was assisted by Diane Newman, and eventually they helped create the Kyrene Foundation, a formal program to assist families in need. Their work has evolved into our Family Resource Center located on the Kyrene de los Niños campus. Hundreds of community volunteers, supportive businesses, students and teachers at our schools support the work of the Resource Center. It provides food, clothing, hygiene items, holiday assistance and other programs so that EVERY student in Kyrene has what they need to come to school ready to learn. The Slater Newman award is given to students for their excellence in community service in honor of two secretaries who started helping students almost 30 years ago. Our vision is that all students in the Kyrene School District have the same opportunities to excel in school each day. 2014 Kyrene Foundation: Board of Directors Kelly Katsiris, President Sean Rosebrugh, Vice President Patricia Weegar, Secretary Lee Jacobs, Treasurer Kelly Alexander, Board Member Donna Castrenze-Steele, Board Member Shirley Coomer, Board Member Nancy Dudenhoefer, Board Member Michelle Garrison, Board Member Amanda Nosbisch, Board Member Cindy Sleasman, Board Member Gregory Stainton, Board Member Jim Steinkamp, Board Member MarJean Steinkamp, Board Member Raju Thiagarajan, Board Member In Memoriam - Socorro Slater This year we said goodbye to Socorro Slater. She passed away peacefully on October 9, 2014, surrounded by her loving family. Socorro was dedicated to her family and friends, and passionate about serving her community and to education. All who knew her remember her as a loving and caring person and she will be sorely missed Honorary Board Members Kyrene Family Resource Center Dr. Ben Furlong The Honorable Harry Mitchell The Honorable Michelle Hirsch Removing Barriers to Learning 5 Food Boxes Non-perishable food bags are designed to feed a family of four for one week. Our most needed donations are pasta and sauce, peanut butter, rice, dry beans, and hearty soups. Friends of the Foundation collect non-perishable food items through school, church, neighborhood and business drives all school year long. Resource and Referral The Kyrene Family Resource Center connects families with additional resources and referral for services such as employment, education, healthcare, childcare, housing, and financial assistance. Hygiene Supplies Families who are struggling financially have to prioritize when purchasing non-food item necessities. The government food stamp program can be helpful but does not cover ANY basic items like soap, toothpaste, toilet paper, or feminine hygiene products. Approximately 35 hygiene kits are distributed each week at the Resource Center. Kits contain 6 full sized items: shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste, toothbrush, soap and deodorant. Clothing Families who visit the Kyrene Family Resource Center can receive new and gently used outfits for school for their children each month. We understand that students who feel like they belong at school perform better in school and so we collect gently used, school appropriate clothing for distribution. In addition to our resource center clothing each fall, the Kyrene Foundation partners with East Valley Assistance League for “Operation School Bell” which helps economically disadvantaged students shop for new clothing in partnership with Target Stores. Any family who could use assistance is welcome at the Kyrene Family Resource Center on a selfdeclared need; there are no income requirements. No appointments are needed during our open service hours. The Kyrene Foundation is fortunate to have the support from the Kyrene community with volunteers for our Kyrene Family Resource Center and our large giving events and fundraisers each year. I volunteered at many school events and PTA functions and through that I became aware of the Kyrene Family Resource Center. I wanted to be a part of the wonderful support it was providing to the Kyrene community and began volunteering at Foundation giving events and signature fundraisers. I am honored to volunteer with and be a Kyrene Foundation Board member and look forward to the great work that lies ahead. In The Spotlight 2014 Bureau of Labor Statistics data lists volunteer hours at a value of $23.07/hour. The Kyrene Foundation is dedicated to increasing learning opportunities for Kyrene students. As a part of that initiative, twice annually, the Kyrene Foundation awards teacher mini-grants. Volunteer Opportunities in 2014 Included: Kyrene Family Resource Center Stuff the Bus Operation School Bell Thanksgiving Food Boxes Winter Wonderland Wishes Come True Summer Activity Kits Taste of Kyrene Hunger Games Movie Fundraiser Tax Credit Donation Campaign Kyrene Softball Classic Kyrene Golf Classic From Volunteer to Foundation Board Member Cindy Sleasman has volunteered at KFRC events for many years. Well known at our Taste of Kyrene and a major contributor to Wishes Come True the Kyrene Foundation welcomes Cindy Sleasman to the Kyrene Foundation Board as a new member. Hear from Cindy about her experience with Kyrene Foundation: Keller Williams Sonoran Realty of Ahwatukee hosted several food drives, a sock drive, Thanksgiving food drive, and a holiday gift drive. It also selected the Kyrene Family Resource Center as the recipient of their Red Day efforts. Over five pallets of food were collected in one morning at several Ahwatukee grocery locations by local relators donating their time and energy. Two Keller Williams realtors have also created a One Home Donation program benefitting the Kyrene Foundation each time a home is bought or sold with mention of the Kyrene Foundation. FedEx Ground of Tempe and other stores in the Arizona region participated in collecting over 200 packed backpacks for Stuff the Bus in July 2014, collected over 500 toys and gifts for Winter Wonderland. They awarded the Kyrene Foundation with a $5000.00 grant to support enrichment, athletic and camp scholarships for students in need. Teacher Mini-Grants The Kyrene Foundation is dedicated to increasing learning opportunities for Kyrene students. As a part of that initiative, twice annually, the Kyrene Foundation awards teacher mini-grants. Mini-Grants Support: Enhanced learning opportunities for students District approved professional development for teachers Kyrene teachers and staff may apply for up to $500.00 for items such as guest speakers, supplies, materials, equipment, educational study trips, conference fees, or allowable travel expenses. In 2014-2015, just over $17,000 was awarded to fund proposals that impacted student learning in Kyrene. Grant cycles are typically August and October. Annual Principal Grant The annual Principal Grant is designed to support the school’s efforts to increase student achievement by providing additional funds for guest speakers, supplies, materials, equipment, conference fees, or allowable travel expenses up to $5000.00. Applications are judged with special consideration for those that support the school’s School Improvement Plan (SIP), the Kyrene School District’s adopted curriculum, and/or supports one of the Kyrene School District’s Innovative programs. In June 2015, the first ever Kyrene Foundation Principal Grant was awarded to Centennial Middle School. 2015 Teacher Mini-Grant Recipient – Eric C. Santos 7th Grade Science Teacher Kyrene Aprende Middle School Kneaders of Ahwatukee donated day old bread to the KFRC once per week for the 2014-2015 school year. Delivery was coordinated by Bob Anderson of the Ahwatukee Kiwanis Club. When my family transferred to Arizona from Pennsylvania, we chose our home based on the fact that it was in the Kyrene School District. All three of my boys went to Kyrene schools. For many years the Kyrene Education Association has hosted a diaper drive in April and a Target gift card drive in December for Winter Wonderland totaling over $1000 in support annually. Summary/Evaluation of Field Trip to Challenger Space Center Kyrene Foundation Mini-Grant, Spring 2015 Project Completed on May 8th, 2015 This field trip was the capstone to a seventh grade science curriculum that heavily invested students in engineering and space exploration. The trip helped me to complete my year-long goals of 1.) Immersing students in a variety of STEM-related career exploration opportunities, 2.) Providing authentic hands on STEM opportunities, and 3.) engaging students in space-exploration education. 7 After gathering student reflections and holding a post-trip discussion, I am confident the students valued this learning experience as a unique and challenging STEM field trip that they wish they could do again. I personally observed 100% engagement for the duration of the activity, and noted that many students were shocked to know that 3 hours had passed so quickly. The teamwork and communication they exhibited was impressive and required little intervention or coaching. It was an exciting and confidence-building way to wrap up the school year. Thank you again for the support to make this trip happen for this motivated group of students. 8 9 Rachel’s Challenge Continues in Kyrene Kyrene Foundation Annual Golf Classic June 3, 2016 Whirlwind Golf Resort in Phoenix A Chain Reaction of Kindness The Kyrene Foundation will hold its Annual Charity Golf Classic at the beautiful Whirlwind Golf Resort on June 3, 2016. The partnership with the Kyrene Foundation and Tempe Diablos brought Rachel’s Challenge to Kyrene middle school students for the third year in a row. In September 2014, Rachel’s Challenge was presented at two Kyrene middle schools, Kyrene Middle School (KMS) and Altadeña Middle School. Students from the closest sister schools were bussed in for a combined presentation. All Kyrene 6th grade and new 7th and 8th grade students received the Rachel’s Challenge presentation. Rachel’s Challenge provides students with a powerful presentation on the life and writings of 17 year-old Rachel Scott, who was the first person killed at Columbine High School in the 1999 tragedy. Rachel left a legacy of reaching out to help students who were picked on, disabled students, and students who were new to her school. Shortly before her death she wrote: “I have this theory, that if one person can go out of their way to show compassion, then it will start a chain reaction of the same.” Altadeña Middle School FOR Club Thank you to the Tempe Diablos for their continued partnership with the Kyrene Foundation.
