Issue 12 - 27 July 2015 - Mount Lilydale Mercy College
120 Anderson Street, Lilydale Vic 3140 Telephone: 9735 4022 | Fax: 9735 0266 email: [email protected] web: www.mlmclilydale.catholic.edu.au A Ministry of Mercy Education Ltd ABN 69 154 531 870 Date: 27 July 2015 Issue: Twelve MAKING A DIFFERENCE GLOBALLY AND LOCALLY In a recent conversation with a student I asked the question, “Does anything you see on the news make you sad”? The reply was simple yet very definite, he simply said, “Everything”. It is easy to understand this sentiment and we perhaps ask ourselves whether there is anything in the world that we can change - and yet as members of a Mercy Tradition based on the teachings of Jesus Christ we must do all that we can to reach out to those in need. This term we will focus our fundraising efforts on Mercy related projects. Mercy Works supports long term development projects, working with some of the most challenged people in Australia and the South-East Asia Pacific region. Improving health Enhancing social well-being Expanding educational opportunities FACT 80% of humanity lives on less than $10 a day Half the world’s children live in poverty 1.1 billion people have inadequate access to water 121 million children have no access to education 925 million people are undernourished 2.6 billion lack access to adequate sanitation This week the Catholic Church celebrates the feast of St Ignatius of Loyola. Perhaps in our own families we could pray this prayer not just in words but in our actions. Prayer for Generosity (St. Ignatius of Loyola) Lord, teach me to be generous. Teach me to serve you as you deserve; to give and not to count the cost, to fight and not to heed the wounds, to toil and not to seek for rest, to labour and not to ask for reward, save that of knowing that I do your will. WE ACKNOWLEDGE THE WURUNDJERI PEOPLE WHO ARE THE TRADITIONAL CUSTODIANS OF THIS LAND WE PAY RESPECT TO THE ELDERS BOTH PAST AND PRESENT OF THE KULIN NATION AND EXTEND THAT RESPECT TO OTHER INDIGENOUS AUSTRALIANS FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK - PHILIP MORISON Dear Members of the Mount Lilydale Mercy College Community It is great to be back in the full swing and with much happening around the College. Whilst I have not been in a position to attend all the awards ceremonies over the last two weeks because of other school commitments, I have observed that they were well supported and I know that our students are very proud to celebrate their academic success and their academic effort. It is always a joy to celebrate success within our community and I am grateful for the many parents, grandparents and other family members that were able to attend. I know that car parking is always tight, as was some seating with a reduced space because of the musical set up, but in many ways this is a good problem to have. Having family attend makes any award far more attractive. Centennial Hall has also been the home to the cast and crew of CATS as they prepare the stage musical with the Opening Night on Friday 24 July. This is a fantastic production and I cannot emphasise enough the importance of you buying a ticket. This show will sell out in the second week as word will spread how good it really is. Don’t miss out. I bought my tickets weeks ago. There is nothing like taking the family out for a musical. Last Thursday night I had the pleasure of attending a meeting of the Yarra Valley Regional Tourism Association (YVRTA) which ran its meeting in McAuley Hall, the reason being the launch of two products. The 2014 Mount Lilydale Mercy College Cabernet and the guide to Lilydale App. The wine, the product of our vines, was made for the first time by students at the College under the direction of Mr Tim Thompson. The Year 10 and Year 12 students were supported well by industry but particularly by Dr Wally Zuk from Five Oaks Wines and Mr Willy Lunn from Yering Station, both of whom donated time and equipment. Even on the night I heard Wally Zuk offer more assistance by the donation of wine tasting glasses and bottle covers for the wine. The App was the work of some geography students again under the direction of Mr Thomson who was supported by our Mayor, Mrs Maria McCarthy. The App is a guide to walking paths that highlight significant places around Lilydale and in creating it, the students uncovered some great places to visit. The launch of the two products in the one event was the work of Year 12 student Megan Kurth, who secured Mrs Susan Halliday as the keynote speaker and the support of the YVRTA, who took the opportunity to announce a yearly scholarship of $1,000 to support our Agriculture and Horticulture program. Megan coordinated fantastic support from other sections of the College community with the design of the wine label by Visual Communication staff and students as well catering produced in house with the support of VET Hospitality staff and students. Overall the event was the culmination of a great effort by so many within the community as was witnessed by the great many staff that attended. The State Government is seeking your support in a consultation process about making Victoria the Education State. They want to hear from all walks of life – parents of kindergarten and school children, teachers and educators, tradespeople and professionals and all that are interested. To participate visit the consultation process at: www.educationstate.education.vic.gov.au Be quick because the process closes on 31 July 2015. The Catholic Education Commission (CECV) has been requested by the Australian Curriculum Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) to provide student background data for the purpose of calculating an index known as the Index of Community Socio-educational Advantage (ICSEA). The CECV currently holds all the data that they need to fulfil this obligation, however, families must be notified and given the opportunity to have the details of any student excluded from the list. Please read the privacy notice attached to this newsletter and if you want your children’s data excluded email such information to me at [email protected] by Monday 10 August 2015. God Bless Philip A Morison Principal The Musical 30, 31 July and 1 August Tickets through TryBooking www.trybooking.com/141134 FROM THE DEPUTY PRINCIPAL - STUDENTS - MICHAEL JOHNSTON Thank you to the many parents and family members who attended the various award ceremonies across the first two weeks of this term. It is important to acknowledge achievement and to encourage all students to strive to improve their performance. By supporting these award ceremonies and other school based activities, parents and guardians are sending a clear message to their children that school is important. As adults we are constantly sending messages to young people via our words and actions. Our ability to convey a positive message and to attach importance to the day to day activities of life has a real impact. As adults it is easy to get caught up in our own day to day routine and believe that young people can develop these attributes on their own. As we get into the work routine of school for Semester Two it is vital to take note of information and advice contained in Semester One reports. This should act as a guide for ways to improve and to set goals for the term ahead. It is also an important time as subject selection processes for 2016 take place. Last week we conducted a parent seminar entitled Supporting Young People In An Online World. A speaker from the Australian Communications and Media Authority provided those in attendance with a great overview of what is ‘trending’ in terms of social media for young people and gave some very sound advice on monitoring use. Thank you to the parents who were in attendance. A great resource on this topic is: https://www.esafety.gov.au/education-resources/parent-resources It also provides details of the newly formed position of the Children’s eSafety Commissioner. One point to come out of this seminar was the importance of parents and schools being informed about these types of important social issues that impact on young people. The task of raising young people and looking out for their welfare is a journey that parents and school share. Knowledge about the challenges and pitfalls that they may encounter is vital. To be informed is the first requirement if we are to be in a position to support when the need arises. Hopefully being pro-active can avoid the potential harm that we know can occur in the lives of some people. Another key issue facing society is the scourge of drug use. The way in which it can destroy lives is well documented and we should be alarmed by this. Throughout the course of this term there will be an information sheet attached to each Newsletter that is aimed at providing some facts and advice on this issue. Hopefully it can be a means to begin a conversation in your household. The material also contains links to websites that contain valuable information and advice. Thank you to the Health & PE Faculty for their assistance with this material. Best wishes to the cast and crew of CATS as their performances occur across a two week period. They have put in an enormous amount of time and effort and if the primary school preview of the show last week is a guide then it will be an outstanding performance. Michael Johnston Deputy Principal - Students Throughout Term Three in each newsletter we will be addressing an issue facing many young Australians and their families. This issue is illicit, and more important to remember, illegal drugs. Over the coming weeks we will have articles to help parents/guardians speak to their child about drugs, what to look out for and ways to protect your child. Also these articles are for students so they know what to look out for, how to protect themselves and their friends and who to seek out if worried about a friend or yourself. When discussing illegal drugs, the media sometimes overstate or portray many facts and figures about drugs but the truth is most young people have never tried an illegal drug. However, in recent times there have been an increase number of young people who have fallen into taking illegal drugs. In recent studies it is stated that: 1 in 8, 12 to 17 year olds have used cannabis, 1 in 40 have used Ecstasy/ Hallucinogens/ Methamphetamines 1 in 90 have used Opiates /Cocaine. The facts are that drugs are illegal and can be highly addictive. It is against the law to possess, use, make, import or sell illegal drugs. It is also against the law in most states/territories to possess any drug-using equipment. The penalties for drug offences vary depending upon a number of factors including; quantity and type of drug, but age and previous offences can be a consideration. Minor drug offences include a caution, a youth justice conference and a drug assessment and education session. Major drug offences include, substantial fines and the possibility of a prison term. Obviously this is at the extreme end of the scale but it is important to know that society and the law treat the issue of drug use as extremely serious. Over the coming weeks will get more in-depth with ways to protect yourself or your child. In the meantime if you would like any additional help please visit any of the below websites: http://positivechoices.org.au/ http://www.drugs.health.gov.au/ http://drugaware.com.au/ www.kidshelpline.com.au www.reachout.com.au www.headspace.org.au www.lifeline.org.au In this week’s article we are going to focus on two aspects for both parents/guardians and students; why do young people use drugs and what to look out for in your teenager. There are often many different reasons why young people use drugs some of these include: To fit in, a belief that everyone else is doing it, to forget problems and escape reality, to loosen up, out of curiosity, out of boredom, to be rebellious, to feel more sociable or even to have fun and feel happy. As a parent you’re going to hear different types of responses if you ever end up talking about this issue to your child. Below are the typical answers heard from young people and a way to respond to them in a constructive manner. 1. “Someone had it and I just thought I’d try it” Ask if they knew what they were taking and discuss the effects of that particular thing. Ask whether it was what they expected, and talk about the risks of continued use. Always try and find out if they felt pressured, and if so, discuss ways to handle similar situations in the future. 2. “I always wanted to try that stuff” Ask what made that particular drug appealing, and what they expected to get from it. If they are happy to talk, you could discuss whether they have tried other drugs, and if so, why? 3. “All my friends were doing it so I thought why not?” Ask if they felt safe because their friends were using it. Ask why they thought their friends used the drug. It’s also useful to discuss the importance of being able to make their own choices, even if these choices are different from those of their friends. 4. “It made me feel really good” Find out how they have been feeling in general, as this may be a good time to offer help and to find out if there is anything else going on, or if they want to talk about another issue. Talk about less risky and healthier ways of feeling good. 5. “All my problems from school, at home and in life just went away” Let them know that you’d like to talk about any problems and discuss how to make things better. Discuss whether the problems returned after the effects of the drug wore off and highlight that using only makes the problems disappear for a while. 6. “It gave me more confidence” Let them know that they don’t need drugs to be more confident. Share similar experiences where you found it difficult in social situations and explain things you did to gain more confidence. Consider ways in which you can help improve their confidence and self-esteem. 7. “Well, you used drugs” Be prepared for this type of statement if it applies to you. Acknowledge the dangers of illegal drugs and that you would think differently now about the choices you’ve made. 8. “I don’t want to talk about it” If they don’t want to discuss their use with you, offer to help them find someone else to talk to. Reassure them that what you want is what is best for them and understand if they would prefer to speak to someone else outside of the situation. You may think that your child will never touch a drug in their life, but due to alarming statistics it could most certainly be possible. Here are some tips to what you should look out for if you think your child may be using/wanting to use drugs: Drowsiness, increased appetite, change in behaviour, loss of coordination, bloodshot eyes, anxiety & panic attacks, paranoia, psychosis, nauseous or vomiting, problems with memory or learning, decreased motivation & concentration, increased energy and dilated (enlarged) pupils. Other important things you should keep an eye on when worried about your child: If they’re avoiding conversations with you, constantly chewing gum, redness in their eyes, rapid loss of weight, paleness of the skin, shaky hands and sudden mood changes or even rises in anger at family members. FROM THE ACTING DEPUTY PRINCIPAL - STUDIES - PETER MOLINARI MERIT AWARDS are presented for a positive approach to learning in relation to enthusiasm for the subject; completion of work; cooperative approach to learning; consistent effort in the subject; consistently meeting due dates and punctuality. AWARDS CEREMONIES Over the last 2 weeks of the term The College Community has come together on a level basis to celebrate and acknowledge Student Achievement for Semester One. Unfortunately it was not possible for all students to receive an award but it was emphasized at all ceremonies that, provided students had put in their best effort into their work as reflected by their semester one reports, that they should be very satisfied and to look forward to consolidating and preparing for the second half of the academic year. We encourage all students to be positive in striving to do their best, to seek teacher assistance when difficulties arise and to make some progress every day. Begin, Believe and Become. There are two categories of Awards: Academic and Merit. See Collage of photos attached. ACADEMIC AWARDS are presented for academic performance in relation to academic excellence; organisation; positive contribution to the learning environment; originality and creativity and enthusiasm for the subject. Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability All Catholic school are required to participate in the 2015 Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (Data Collection). This national Data Collection is taking place in schools across Australia and will provide information about the number of students with disability in schools, where they are located and the adjustments they receive. The information provided by this new data collection will enable all Australian governments to better target support and resources. This will assist students with disability in government and non-government schools across Australia to complete school and go on to further education or find employment. Inclusion in the Data Collection is voluntary. If you wish your child to be excluded from this, you can choose to opt-out of the data collection by informing us in writing. If you do not wish to participate in the collection of data, please complete the above form and return to Student Reception by Monday 3 August 2015 TOURNAMENT OF THE MINDS 2015 – PARENTS AND FRIENDS (P & F) ASSOCIATION FUNDRAISER BBQ Tournament of the Minds 2015 – Parents and Friends (P & F) Association Fundraiser BBQ Dear Parents/Guardians of Mount Lilydale Mercy College students P & F hold three fundraisers a year and these cannot go ahead without the assistance of our community. We are fortunate to be the host of the annual Tournament of Minds which is a problem solving programme for teams of students from both primary and secondary years. All schools in our area have been invited to participate which allows us this wonderful fundraising opportunity. This fundraiser has a dual purpose, providing hospitality to our guests and College community as well as raising funds for scholarships to our students in years 7 – 10. We are asking for the assistance of parent and friend volunteers to help serve at our BBQ throughout the day which will be held under cover outside Centennial Hall on: Saturday 22 August 2015 from 8am – 3pm If you’ve never had the wonderful opportunity to volunteer for Mount Lilydale Mercy College please consider helping out by offering 1 hour of your time on this day. There is no requirement to be on the Parents and Friends Committee to participate. If you are interested please email [email protected] with your name, time available and contact details. Thank you very much in anticipation. Where: McAuley Library When: 3.30-4.30pm every Wednesday I was moved to see the picture that `went viral’ online recently showing a small Filipino boy who did not have electricity at home who was so eager to complete his home work that his `Home Work Club’ venue was sitting outside a MacDonald’s franchise to get enough light to complete his work for the next school day. A poignant reminder that we in Australia and at Mount Lilydale Mercy College have much to be grateful for. If you wish your son/daughter to attend please sign up via the Parent Portal. READER OF THE MONTH FOR JUNE: Sarah Greene - 9 Jade The first thing Sarah remembers reading and enjoying were `My Story’ books and, once she started she read about twenty of them. In Sarah’s own words she `wasn’t a reader’ until she was in Year 6 and this shows that, in many cases, it’s not a case of not liking reading but more one of not having found the right book to read. The last books Sarah read, `Vampire Huntress’ series was about a vampire hunter who joins forces with a bounty hunter and they go after groups of vampires who are murdering innocent people. Sarah likes reading `hard copy titles’ as she finds she can `get more into it’ as she can go backwards over previous pages and look forward to pages she has yet to read. She also feels the benefit from on-line reading too as there is `more variety’ and is more accessible. David Remminga - 12 Silver Werner Kurth - 8 Bronze Riley Swankie - 7 White RILEY SWANKIE 1. 2. 3.
