of students and teachers, the Sioux City Public
Museum is developing several collaborative efforts with
area educational groups.
In November, the Museum
hosted two events for the
Sioux City Community School
District’s middle and high
School STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and
Math) programs. A demonstration from middle school
and high school students
involved in the STEM program
was presented to Lt. Governor Kim Reynolds at the Museum. Reynolds noted that
the Sioux City school district
was one of the first districts in
the state to hire STEM coaches to sponsor after-school
robotics clubs. Most recently,
the Museum hosted a STEM
Scrimmage for local middle
and high school students in
preparation for their regional
competition.
In addition, Museum staff
are working with students

Success can be measured in many ways and
as you read through these pages I am sure
you will notice that it truly has been another
year of growth at all of our sites. Attendance
numbers remain high, artifact donations
have expanded the quality of our collection,
the endowment is growing and we continue
to add new programs and exhibits throughout the year.
As the Director, I am blessed with an excellent staff that works exceedingly hard to
serve the community. This dedication combined with an incredible volunteer base allows the Museum to provide a wide range of
programs, exhibits and activities throughout
the year while striving to fulfill our mission and
operate as a nationally accredited Museum.
By any measure it has been another history
making year for the entire Museum and once
again the standard has been set at a very
high level. As we move forward you can expect to see new collaborations and a diverse
offering of exhibits and exciting programs
that will further enhance our reputation as a
great place to bring family and friends for a
visit. We hope you visit us again and often.
reetings and welcome to our annual
report and year-end newsletter. The
annual report has always been my
favorite newsletter of the year as it details
our growth, highlights our programming and
recognizes our volunteers, donors and staff
whose combined efforts have developed
the Sioux City Public Museum into a destination cultural attraction.

the number one domestic problem the country faces.” That evening, Kennedy stayed at
the Sheraton-Martin Hotel. The next morning
at a breakfast gathering, he stumped for local candidates like Donald O’Brien.
The film donation was announced at a press conference by Terry
Prince, left, and Steve Hansen, Museum Director, in November.

Kennedy, on the morning of September 22,
traveled by motorcade to the Sioux City
stockyards, where he delivered another
speech. There he said “…this country can’t
be prosperous unless the farmer is prosperous. We must try to bring a balance between
supply and demand.” After this, someone
from the crowd dared Kennedy to ride a
mule, and that he did. Riding down the alleys, Kennedy shook many hands before
dismounting.
Terry Prince, working in the stockyards, saw
Kennedy speak and was one of the people
who filmed the event. Unfortunately, his tape
was lost. Later, Prince was able to procure
one of the other recordings of the campaign
stop. He then donated copies of it to the
Sioux City Public Museum in January 2013.

Fiscal Year 2012 – 2013 • July 1, 2012 – June 30, 2013
Sioux City Public Museum
The Sioux City Public Museum
participated in a variety of
collaborations to provide fun
and educational opportunities to the public.
In FY13, Museum staff and
other presenters delivered
90 adult and children’s programs to the public; some
were so popular they had
to be presented twice! The
History at High Noon series
continues to draw a great
deal of enthusiasm for the

tremendous photographic
collection at the Museum.
The Research Center initiated
a popular series of workshops
aimed at helping participants preserve and care for
personal artifacts. Walking
tours, special lectures and a
film premiere rounded out
the adult programs.
Not only did the new permanent exhibit, “The Big Dig!”
attract new visitors, it provided a valuable resource
for children’s programs. The
opening of the hands-on
fossil exhibit was featured in
summer camps, Beyond the
Bell programs and Dino Days
(held over winter break for
families). Girl Scouts were the
focus of a new event, “Fashion Night at the Museum,” to
explore fashion history and
contemporary design. School
groups from pre-K to high
school dominated the scenes
from March through May.
With the help of tour guides,
staff and interns almost 100
groups explored the facility.
The hands-on exhibits in the
permanent gallery, immersive
fossil experience of “The Big
Dig!” and enriching programming activities continued to
engage and entice visitors of
all ages at the Museum.
The Research Center staff
served 1,212 researchers with
327 in-house researchers and
880 phone/e-mail inquiries.
Additional audiences were
reached through outreach
efforts such as community
presentations, which nearly
doubled from the previous
fiscal year.

Welcome Center
The Sergeant Floyd River
Museum & Welcome Center
is approaching its 25th anniversary of operation. On May
15, 1989, the City of Sioux
City, in cooperation with the
state of Iowa, opened its first
welcome center. The drydocked, former U.S. Army
Corps of Engineers riverboat,
commissioned the M.V. Sergeant Floyd, has served Sioux
City as an information center,
river museum and gift shop
ever since.
Visitors from every state and
around the world have been
introduced to Sioux City,
local history, and area products through the exhibits,
tourist offerings and the sale
of merchandise. Currently,
four part-time city employees
with a combined 45 years
of service are employed at

the Sergeant Floyd. A crew
of eight volunteers, with 73
years of combined service,
assist the regular staff. These
individuals have a genuine
passion for customer service
and loyalty to the Sergeant
Floyd’s original purposes:
introduce visitors to our community and invite them to
explore and spend time in
the area.
Peirce Mansion
Restoration efforts continued
at the Peirce Mansion with
the completion of the Bride’s
and Groom’s rooms. These
former bedrooms were transformed into changing rooms
for wedding parties. Volunteers with the Association’s
Peirce Mansion Committee,
continue to lead the restoration efforts and are solely
responsible for staffing rentals
and coordinating events.
The Peirce Mansion is available for weddings, receptions, birthday and graduation parties, and corporate
events. Open Houses for the
public are held quarterly.
ANNUAL REPORT • 2 The second floor was completed with the renovation of the “Groom’s Room” in the summer.
Volunteers from the Peirce Mansion Committee accepted a donation of $2,000 from the
Questers - Sacajawea Chapter in June 2013. A “Friends of the Peirce Mansion” drive was
launched to assist with on-going restoration and operations of the historic building.
Volunteers
The Sioux City Public Museum
and its sites are able to provide a higher level of service
to the community thanks to
the commitment of an outstanding group of volunteers.
Their dedication – whether as
greeters, tour guides, specific projects in the Research
Center or as board members
– is invaluable.
In FY13, 150 volunteers gave
a combined 6,720 hours of
service at the Museum and
Welcome Center; totals are
not available for Peirce Mansion volunteers and board
members.

Endowment Giving
Even as the Museum’s capital campaign
pledges were still being completed,
efforts to build the Museum’s endowment
gained momentum. The Gilchrist Foundation
provided an outright gift of $25,000 along
with a $9,370 challenge grant in FY13. Other
non-traditional gifts came from the Smith
40th anniversary party and the Sioux City
Museum Artisans Guild (see articles).

Couple’s anniversary provides
lasting gifts to Museum
Then and now: Connie and Mac Smith on their wedding day and
at their anniversary party watching a slideshow of photographs.
When Mac and Connie Smith’s children,
Adam, Jay, and his wife, Alissa, offered to
throw a 40th wedding anniversary party in
August 2012 the couple didn’t insist on “no
gifts please”; instead they had very specific
gifts in mind: donations to the Sioux City
Public Museum’s endowment. Since the
Museum was serving as the venue for the
event, it also gave many of their guests the
opportunity to visit the then-one-year-old
facility for the first time. Thanks to the Smiths
and their guests, more than $4,000 was
raised for the Education/Exhibit fund.
Crafts and art create unique giving opportunity
A sampling of Sioux City Museum Artisans Guild items for sale in the Museum Store.
A unique hybrid of volunteers and donors,
the Sioux City Museum Artisans Guild
represents a new kind of contributor to the
Sioux City Public Museum. Rosie Kuehne
and Camille Lydon, who also volunteer in
other ways for the Museum, have recruited
volunteers to use their special talents to
create gifts ranging from earrings to wooden
toys. All of the proceeds from the sale of
the items are invested in the Museum’s
Education/Exhibit endowment within the
Siouxland Community Foundation. Members
of the Sioux City Museum Artisans Guild in
FY13 were: Jeff Baldus, Rita Iverson, Rosie
Kuehne, Gene & Camille Lydon, and Carolee
Maurer. Other individuals have participated
in the past and have joined after the
beginning of the new fiscal year.

Quilt exhibit highlights Museum’s collection
T
wo exhibits featuring
quilts opened simultaneously at the Sioux City
Public Museum and Sioux
City Art Center on November
23. While the show’s openings were timed to coincide
with each other, the exhibits
show different approaches
to quilting as an art form.
The Sioux City Art Center’s exhibit, “Quilt Art: International
Expressions” is a traveling
show of more than 30 contemporary quilts by the members of Quilt Art, an international group of quilt-making
artists. Meanwhile, the Sioux
City Public Museum’s exhibit
“Homegrown Art: Traditional
Quilt Designs” features a variety of quilt designs from its
own collection. Both exhibits
will be on display through
February 16, 2014.
The Museum’s exhibit showcases a wide range of styles
including familiar patterns
Among the variety of quilts showcased in
the Museum’s “Homegrown Art: Traditional
Quilt Designs” exhibit is a Friendship/Sampler Album (left) and a Story Quilt that tells
the history of the Hmong people of Southeast Asia who were key U.S. allies during
the Vietnam War (below).
such as Log Cabin, Crazy,
Patchwork, Friendship and
Patriotic. Some other less
familiar variations are North
Carolina Lilly, Dresden Plate,
Flower Basket, Postage
Stamp and Six-Point Star.
Among the two most unique
quilts from the Museum’s
collection are a Friendship/
Sampler Album quilt and a
Hmong Story quilt. The Sampler Album or autograph quilt
is made up of unique blocks,
in this case, handkerchiefs,
with the names embroidered
on the blocks. This quilt made
by Mrs. Zeno (Mollie Hedges)
Brown, c1895, features handkerchiefs from prominent
men in Sioux City and Iowa
society. The Hmong Story
Quilt chronicles the plight of
thousands of refuges who left
their homeland and settled
in the U.S. following the U.S.
withdrawal from Laos in 1975.
