And we emerged as stronger advocates for our four-legged companions. Your support enabled us to make a difference in the ani- mals’ lives this year. You helped us to save more lives, fight is only with your support that we are able to continue each day to care, shelter, and advocate for a better quality of life for the companion animals of this region. The animals will never say it, but for them, we thank you. Ana Zorrilla, Chief Executive Officer 1 Lo u i s i a n a S P C A L a u n c h e s A g g r e s s i v e A d op t i o n C a m pa i g n i n 2 0 1 0 IN 2010 1,690 animals found loving forever homes this year 60 foster parents fostered 147 animals in 2010 407 animals were transported for guaranteed adoption 117 animals were adopted through our satellite adoption center Finding new homes for the unwanted animals of our community is a privilege for the LA/SPCA and it is one of the perks of working in this field. This year we challenged ourselves to look at adoptions through a new set of eyes. The results were new promotions and initiatives increasing the opportunities our adoptables have at finding a new home. Throughout the year we looked for ways to promote our animals. We added an Olympic promotion in the beginning of the year in honor of the Winter Olympics in Canada. Our Buddy Program encouraged cat adopters to bring home a second cat for no adoption fee from June through November. Home for the Holidays not only encouraged adopters to adopt in December, but also enabled us to provide blankets for all of our animals throughout the cooler winter months. Each program highlighted a current event or special season ensuring those adoptable animals stayed in front of the general public. In August, the LA/SPCA was one of 50 shelters to participate in the ASPCA’s first adoption challenge. The Challenge was to increase your shelter’s live release rate by 300 over the same time period in 2009. We met the challenge head on and as a result have several new initiatives that have stayed with us beyond the November end date of the Challenge. Our Fast Track Adoption program places adoptable dogs in Foster Homes for two weeks. Throughout those two weeks the foster family is empowered to find their foster dog a forever home with trips to the dog park, walks around the neighborhood, social networking magic and more. The foster family interviews potential forever homes and completes all the adoption paperwork when the right home is found. The Pit Crew is racing to find forever homes for the many Pit Bulls we have available. Through weekly e-mails, matching human/dog t-shirts, and official business cards this Crew starts the conversation with their family, friends, and neighbors about the incredible Pit Bull breed. Adoptable Pit Bulls are selected to be featured on a weekly basis. The extra attention not only helps these dogs get adopted, but can lead to great educational opportunities about the Pit Bull breed in general. Find out more about the Pit Crew at www.la-spca.org/pitcrew. For the first time ever the LA/SPCA ran a satellite adoption center from August – November. The Adoption Center was made possible by an incredible space donation from Clearview Mall. Located in Metairie, LA, a New Orleans suburb, the Adoption Center placed 117 adoptable animals in new homes. We also took away valuable lessons on how to run a satellite operation. The LA/SPCA will use these lessons as we expand throughout this region. This year we increased the number of transports adding to a growing list of partner organizations. Our biggest transport was 100 dogs from throughout the region to St. Hubert’s in New Jersey. All the dogs found forever homes, including Macy, a dog who needed a second chance after losing her family during the BP Oil Spill in April. One thousand six hundred and ninety animals found forever homes through LA/SPCA adoption efforts this year. 3 T h e L A / S P C A s av e s h u n d r e d s o f a n i m a l s a f f e ct e d b y t h e B P O i l Sp i ll basic check-ups. We quickly realized this wasn’t helping all of the oil spill victims. Thousands of abandoned animals were putting a strain on local shelters. With the outpouring of support we received in response to the Gulf Coast Companion Animal Relief Program we were able to implement a second phase. The LA/ SPCA began to organize transports across the country, moving hundreds of unwanted dogs to adoption guarantee facilities. Soon, potential pet owners across the country had an opportunity to adopt a Gulf Coast Oil Spill dog. While this region is still reeling from the devastation caused by the Deepwater Horizon explosion the fates of their family pets remains secure thanks to the quick action of the LA/SPCA. April 21, 2010 the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig exploded killing eleven people and setting up a community for the largest disaster since Hurricane Katrina. Oil began seeping into the Gulf of Mexico and for three months the local community watched in horror as each effort to stop the seepage failed. As a result of the explosion and ensuing oil spill, thousands of people were without a livelihood and thousands more faced uncertain futures. It wasn’t until July 15, 2010 that the oil finally stopped spilling into the Gulf. But, by that time the affected parishes had already been rocked by the consequences of this disaster. As soon as the effects on family pets became apparent, the LA/SPCA jumped into action. Dogs and cats were being surrendered to animal shelters at a record pace throughout the region, because owners were no longer able to afford their care. With help from the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, the Gulf Coast Companion Animal Relief Program began. Initially, the program intended to aid victims of the oil spill, giving them the support they needed to keep their pets in their homes. Pet food was provided to anyone affected by the oil disaster and additionally, the LA/SPCA provided free vaccinations, spay/neuter surgeries, and 4 BP Oil Spill Response made possible by: Ronda Gruber Charitable Foundation Fidelity Charitable Gift Fund Greater New Orleans Foundation ACBL Charity Foundation Mardigian Foundation The Grundy Foundation T. G r o u n d b r e a k i n g l e g i s l at i o n pa s s e d at S tat e a n d Loc a l l e v e l s With the right laws in place animal control and animal welfare advocates are armed with tools to enact change. This year, the LA/SPCA was instrumental in passing a milestone ordinance in Orleans Parish and landmark legislation in the Louisiana Congress. Orleans Parish Ordinance 27953, the Intact Dog Permit, requires owners of intact dogs to purchase a yearly permit. The LA/SPCA will manage this program through our contract providing Animal Control in Orleans Parish. This ordinance gives Animal Control the means to lessen the impact an intact dog has on the community as a whole. With an intact permit, consequences for irresponsible ownership can be enforced when an animal arrives at the shelter. Also, an increased awareness of affordable spay/neuter options encourages pet owners to do their part in ending pet overpopulation. The number of fatal dog attacks should also decrease. Unneutered dogs are the perpetrators in the majority of deadly dog attacks. This ordinance is a milestone for the dog lovers of New Orleans. Not only is this community taking proactive steps to end pet overpopulation, but the City Council demonstrated its dedication to the quality of life for the animals of this city. IN 2010 The LA/SPCA worked with the Humane Society of the United States to pass a number of animal related laws in this year’s Louisiana Legislative Session. HB 408 CRIME/DOGFIGHTING: Provides for the authorization of certain persons to euthanize dogs seized in connection with dog fighting HB 428 ANIMALS/CRUELTY: Provides for the seizure of animals treated cruelly HB 219 CRIME: Creates the crime of illegally restraining a dog SB 73 ANIMALS: Prohibits the use of certain forms of euthanasia in animals SB 38 CRIME/PUNISHMENT: Creates the crime of participation in cockfighting HB 313 ANIMALS/DOGS: Increases license fee for dog breeders HB 576 ANIMALS: Authorizes local governing authorities to regulate dogs and roaming livestock The LA/SPCA is proud of the role we play in protecting animals throughout this state. 7 G r a n d O p e n i n g ! E x pa n d e d C o m m u n i t y C l i n i c op e n s A u g u s t 2 9 , 2 0 1 0 August 29, 2010 the LA/SPCA opened the only high-volume spay/neuter clinic in the region. The clinic was made possible through generous grants from five national animal groups – the ASPCA, PetSmart Charities®, United Animal Nationals, The International Fund for Animal Welfare, and the Humane Society of the United States. The purpose of the LA/ SPCA Community Clinic is to reduce pet overpopulation through high quality sterilization procedures as well as promoting the wellbeing of pets by providing vaccinations and microchip services to clients unable to afford private veterinary services. The LA/SPCA clinic staff completed a vigorous training program with the Humane Alliance’s National Spay/Neuter Response Team. The Humane Alliance is a nationally renowned center, training veterinary professionals in specialized surgical techniques for high-vol- ume surgical sterilizations. The LA/SPCA Community Clinic provides hundreds of spay/neuter services to partner animal welfare groups including St. Bernard Parish Animal Shelter, Terrebonne Animal Shelter and ARNO. Providing an affordable option for veterinary services is central to improving the human/animal bond in our community and with this expansion the LA/SPCA’s reach will continue to grow. IN 2010 6,726 pets were spayed/neutered this year at our Community Clinic 883 families received financial support to provide basic pet care 3,356 pets received veterinary services with our Community Clinic 2,381 feral cats came through the Trap-Neuter-Release program 8 E v e n t s R a i s e D $3 3 1 , 6 4 5 i n 2 0 1 0 Through the generosity of community members, donors and volunteers devoted to the work of the LA/SPCA, we raised funds in multiple ways; including mail requests, grant writing, bequests and major events. Not only do these events raise much-needed revenue and provide exposure to our programs and services, but they give LA/SPCA supporters a great chance to enjoy each others’ company – and often the company of their furry family members, too. Here’s a recap of some of our major events that put the “fun” in fundraising. The LA/SPCA’s friends and supporters sailed through time with “A Tribute to the 1940’s” at the 32nd annual LA/SPCA Howling Success Gala. Celebrity chairs included Bryan Batt, Christian LeBlanc, and Louisiana’s First Lady Supriya Jindal. Anderson Cooper was named Humanitarian of the Year for his coverage of the BP Oil Spill. Restaurant Chair Leslie and Dickie Brennan and over 20 of the best local restaurants delighted taste buds. Jazz songstress Anais St. John, the Big Band sound of Swingaroux and a special appearance by the Victory Belles, courtesy of the World War II Museum, created a fun and fabulous environment to mix and mingle with the stars of today and some characters of yesterday, while raising 10% of the LA/SPCA’s operating budget. The LA/SPCA’s 28th Annual Dog Day Afternoon kicked off spring this year. Spirits were high, even though the temperatures were low and the four-legged and two-legged attendees enjoyed food, fun, and games in our second year at New Orleans City Park. IN 2010 501 volunteers gave 22,495 hours of their time to the LA/SPCA On a cold Spring day Dog Day Afternoon raised over $80,000 Over 200 varieties of beer were served at New Orleans on Tap event Howling Success roared into record books with over $200,000 raised D O G DAY A F T E R N O O N 2 0 1 0 First Annual New Orleans on Tap 2010 H owling S uccess 2 0 1 0 The day’s highlight was a dog/fun walk-a-thon honoring Chair Dog “Babi Levy.” Event participation wasn’t limited to attendees; out-of-state on-line fundraisers joined efforts to raise 5% of the LA/SPCA’s annual operating budget. Even with the cold weather, the LA/SPCA raised its goal of $80,000 through this event. Raising funds for the LA/SPCA’s Community Clinic services, the LA/SPCA celebrated fashion with the 2nd annual Alegria Fashion Show. This year’s designers hit the cat walk at the W New Orleans. While fashionistas ooh’d and ahh’d over up and coming New Orleans designers’ fashions, the donations raised from the event sent tails a’waggin’ at the Animal Care and Rescue Center. Designer Bernadette Klotz walked away with the title of Best Fashion Designer, but the real winner was the Community Clinic which received all the proceeds from the event. The LA/SPCA launched two new events in 2010. Pause4Dinner capitalizes on New Orleans’ favorite past time: dining out. With 20 participating restaurants this year and a fantastic partnership with the George Rodrigue Foundation, this one night only event benefiting the LA/SPCA is sure to become a New Orleans’ favorite. New Orleans on Tap was made possible through collaboration with The Bulldog New Orleans venue. This event surpassed even the highest expectations. We learned to never underestimate a beautiful day, live music, and a flow of hops in New Orleans. The LA/SPCA is looking forward to growing these events in the years to come, adding new ways for pet lovers to enjoy what New Orleans has to offer while supporting the LA/SPCA. 11 C r u e lt y I n v e s t i g at i o n s Ta k e C e n t e r S ta g e Every report of neglect or abandonment is a potential cruelty investigation. Armed with knowledge, experience, and expertise in forensic crime scene investigations the LA/SPCA Animal Cruelty team hits the streets daily to educate pet owners and bring justice to the victims of animal cruelty. In May, 70 Chihuahuas, Spaniels, and small mixed breed dogs were rescued from a hoarding situation in New Orleans. These dogs needed immediate medical care and socialization. The LA/SPCA was not only able to give these dogs a second chance at a happy home, but provide relief to the owner whose misguided efforts at caring for these animals spiraled out of control. In partnership with the Metropolitan Crime Commission, the LA/SPCA provided assistance to the New Orleans District Attorney’s office in the tragic death of K-9 Officer Primo. Primo was a Belgian Malinois Police Dog who was left in a car during record heat. The LA/SPCA called upon the professional expertise of Dr. Melinda Merck, ASPCA’s forensic veterinarian, to determine Primo’s death was not the result of pre-existing health conditions. Dr. Merck was also able to describe how heat affects internal organs and can ultimately cause a canine death. With that information the DA was able to move forward in pressing charges against Officer Jason Lewis. This case uncovered a pattern of gross negligence on behalf of the NOPD K-9 unit. 12 The LA/SPCA Cruelty investigators were called to investigate when a cat was found badly injured by a young boy. After a necropsy was performed by LA/ SPCA veterinarian, Dr. Kerry Backsen, it was determined the cat died because of blunt force trauma. The 16-year-old boy was found guilty of repeatedly abusing this cat by kicking him like a ball. Cruelty investigation is unfortunately a reality in the work that we do, and our team continues to forge ahead with professionalism, compassion and dedication to help the mistreated and neglected. IN 2010 2,634 cruelty complaints were investigated this year 9,640 Animal Control calls were completed in 2010 New Orleans first responders received assistance on 166 cases 2,063 stray animals were rescued from the streets of New Orleans The LA/SPCA is excited to share the highs and lows of our work every year with our most important audience, our donors and supporters. We know you value the work that we do and we couldn’t do it without you. We also want to give you an overview of our every day. These programs and services are a day in the life at the LA/SPCA! The LA/SPCA is an open admission animal shelter. This means every animal that comes to the LA/SPCA is provided with humane care regardless of its age, health condition or temperament. The LA/SPCA shelters, cares for, cleans, feeds, and so- cializes over 300 cats, dogs, rabbits, hamsters, chickens, goats, and other animals on a daily basis. We provide enrichment to the animals while they are with us, including scratching boards for cats, Kong chewing toys for dogs, and bedding for all animals. Our incredible volunteers bathe and groom the dogs before adoption events, walk and play with them in our exercise yards, and socialize the kittens and cats in the “get acquainted” room. The LA/SPCA Veterinary team assesses each animal that comes to the shelter. While maintaining the big picture view of the shelter’s health, they examine each animal individually and ensure they are as healthy and comfortable as possible. Several special cases made their way through the clinic and because of the clinic staff’s attention to detail these animals received a second chance at finding a forever home. Poncho arrived in October with a tilted broken pelvis; his prognosis was bleak. Because of the attention of our staff and a little patience from our clinic team, Poncho’s pelvis recovered and he was placed into a loving home. The LA/SPCA has so many pets coming into our shelter with collars but no tags. Our amazing Lost and Found specialist, Ms. Laurie Weisberg, reunited 527 animals with their owners with help from staff and volunteers. The LA/SPCA Feral Cat outreach continued throughout 2010. This year we were able to subsidize 745 feral cat surgeries through fundraising. In total we sterilized 2,381 feral cats in 2010. We also provided five training classes for individuals interested in learning how to humanely trap cats for sterilization. efforts continued throughout 2010. Despite the calm hurricane season, the BP oil spill tested our response plans. The LA/SPCA worked side by side with government officials to prepare for the worst case scenarios for wildlife while responding to the unexpected impact on companion animals. The LA/SPCA disaster preparedness The LA/SPCA partnered with the Southeastern Louisiana Veterinary Association, the New Orleans Fire Department, and the City of New Orleans to bring back the Palm Sunday Rabies Vaccination Drive on March 28, 2010 with 1,400 cats and dogs receiving a rabies vaccination and license. The LA/SPCA off-site adoption team focused on raising awareness about adoption events through a new advertising campaign. Funds from the sale of the 2010 LA/SPCA Adoption Stories Calendar were spent on print and Internet advertising resulting in more adoptions than in past years. The LA/SPCA has many dogs who are infected with heartworm disease. If caught in the early stages, this condition can be treated and the dog lives a long healthy life. Because of the efforts of LA/SPCA volunteers, funds have been raised to provide adoptable heartworm positive dogs with treatment! The LA/SPCA knows expanding programs to reach more young people is a vital way we work to change the future for animals in our community. Through afterschool programs, daylong workshops, in school presentations, shelter tours and summer camps, 3,046 children participated in the LA/ SPCA Humane Education programming this year. The LA/SPCA’s continuing education is integral to keep our programs and services top notch. This year, LA/SPCA staff and volunteers completed a series of Dog Breed Identification training classes. With so many pure and designer breeds coming into the LA/SPCA, this class has helped us do a better job of educating adopters about behaviors and health conditions typical to certain breeds of dogs. 14 The LA/SPCA Pause to Reflect, Planned Giving Society, received eight bequests this year for a total of $313,198.76. Ensure your legacy by learning more at la-spca.org/plannedgiving. The LA/SPCA engages thousands of supporters through our social media efforts. We ended 2010 with a YouTube channel, over 5,000 fans on Facebook and over 2,000 followers on Twitter. The LA/SPCA worked with area rescue groups ,including Dag’s House, throughout the year. Because of the partnerships we have maintained we are able to move some of our special needs breeds into homes faster. The LA/SPCA continued to perform Animal Control en- forcement and sheltering services for Orleans Parish throughout 2010. Because of the City’s inability to fund the services, in the last three months of 2010 the LA/SPCA provided emergency services only. The LA/SPCA provides support to shelters through- out the region, in addition to the long term commitment we have to monitor and support the St. Bernard Animal Shelter. In February the LA/SPCA assisted in re-homing some of the 400 dogs found in deplorable conditions in the Clarksdale Shelter in Mississippi. The LA/SPCA volunteer program continues to engage and encourage service from all generations and walks of life. Working with individuals and groups such as ARC, O. Perry Walker, and AmeriCorps, 501 volunteers assisted the LA/SPCA. 22,495 volunteer hours were completed with administrative tasks, socializing animals, community outreach, and everything in between addressed. This equates to over $400,000 in value. The LA/SPCA garnered over $3,000,000 of media value through weekly media appearances on WDSU, WWL, Fox and WGNO26, the Gambit, Times Picayune, WIST, and CBS Outdoors Communications. With a newly redesigned Web site, over 195,000 visits to la-spca.org generated more interest in the programs and services provided by the LA/SPCA. The LA/SPCA 4 Paws Society, the annual fund donors of $1,000+, grew by 73 members and raised $65,603.15 throughout the year.
