NOTE
THIS BULLETIN SUPERCEDES FIELD SERVICE BULLETIN 2902 AND 2902B IN IT’S ENTIRETY.
Bendix has informed MCI that operating a BA-921 compressor with an incorrect purge valve for as little as 20
hours can result in the build-up of carbon in the head of the compressor doing ir-repairable damage
necessitating replacement of the BA-921 compressor.
A copy of Bendix Technical Bulletin TCH-008-040 can be found on Page 4 of this document.
Description:
The following bulletin provides information on the two versions of the Bendix ADIP dryer installed on D / E / J model
coaches and the Haldex dryer installed on E and J model coaches.
Care should be taken not to confuse the Bendix dryers, as their internal functions are different. The Bendix ADIP dryer is
designed to cut off the inlet air supply from the compressor to the dryer while the compressor is unloaded. This dryer
was only used with the Bendix Tu-Flow 750 compressor. The Bendix ADIP-DLU dryer utilizes the purge valve to bleed off
excess air instead of unloading the compressor. This dryer is only used with the Bendix BA-921 compressor.
Both Bendix dryers are identical in appearance; however, the ADIP-DLU dryer requires a muffler, while the ADIP does not.
The ADIP dryer utilizes a purge valve with three o-rings. The ADIP-DLU purge valve contains only two o-rings. If a two
o-ring purge valve is installed on a coach requiring an ADIP dryer, the air inlet to the dryer will not be cut off during the
unloading cycle, but will be exhausted through the bottom of the dryer. If a three o-ring purge valve is installed on a
coach requiring an ADIP-DLU dryer, the BA-921 compressor will continue to build pressure in the line between the
compressor and dryer after the coach pressure is obtained. One of the two pressure protection valves will blow. A loud
repeating popping noise will be heard emitting from the compressor or dryer. This set-up will eventually lead to heavy
carbon deposits in both the line leading from the compressor to the dryer, as well as the dryer itself.
If an ADIP dryer has been installed on any unit running a BA-921 compressor, the purge valve can simply be replaced
with a two o-ring purge valve. A muffler kit must also be added. If the BA-921 compressor pressure protection valve or
dryer pressure protection valve has blown at any time, they must be replaced.
The system must be inspected to ensure the carbon deposits are removed for proper air flow. Carburetor cleaner and
compressed air can be used to remove deposits from the air lines once the entire system has cooled to ambient
temperature. Pay particular attention to the 90 degree fittings. If the ADIP dryer has been plugged with carbon deposits,
replace it with a new ADIP-DLU dryer.
The table below will assist customers by identifying factory installed air dryers, purge valves and compressor types by
model and effective unit number cut-in.

Bendix® AD-IP™ & AD-IS® Purge Valve Maintenance Kits
The Bendix® AD-IP™ & AD-IS® air dryers are available as a standard air dryer and as a DLU discharge line
unloader model. The functions of these air dryers (Standard vs. DLU) and their internal components are
different. The standard air dryer cuts off the supply air from compressor to the air dryer when the compressor
is in the unloaded mode, while the DLU air dryer utilizes a purge valve to bleed off the excess air instead
of unloading the compressor. Externally the standard and DLU versions of each air dryer configuration are
identical in appearance; however the DLU style air dryer often has a silencer on the exhaust port.
The purge valve assembly of the standard air dryer contains three O-rings and the DLU version contains
only two. If a replacement DLU purge valve assembly (2 O-rings) is installed in a standard air dryer the air
inlet to the dryer will not be cut off during the unloaded cycle, but will be exhausted through the bottom of
the dryer. If a replacement standard purge valve assembly (3 O-rings) is installed on a DLU style air dryer,
the air compressor will continue to build pressure in the line between the compressor and air dryer until
the compressor safety valve opens or the purge valve relieves excess pressure. This causes a repeating,
popping sound from the air compressor or air dryer, but may be muffled if an air dryer silencer is installed.
When servicing either air dryer, it is important to use the proper components or kits.
