La Camera Representative Byron Rushing Summer Programs for Children at the Boston Public Library www.bpl.org/summer Read Your Way to Fenway Historic New England In this annual summer reading contest, children and teens read three books for a chance to win three tickets to watch the Red Sox play at Fenway Park on Sunday, August 28. Sponsored by John Hancock, The Red Sox Foundation, and The Boston Public Library Foundation. Rules •For children and teens ages 5 to 17. Ever wonder why our football team is called the Patriots? Or why the Red Sox are named after their socks? Children root, root, root into the history of New England home teams, explore how they were formed, and discover how teams choose a mascot. Participants invent their own team complete with a name, colors, and a mascot and make a team pennant. Date DAY July 11 •One entry per person. Duplicate entries will be discarded. July 12 •Winners will be notified via phone and will pick up their tickets from the same location where they submitted their essays. •Winners receive three tickets to the game on Sunday, August 28, three vouchers for food at Fenway Park, and one t-shirt, hat, and backpack. July 13 W July 14 Th July 15 F •Each winner must be accompanied to the game by one parent or guardian. July 18 Important Dates •Contest starts: Wednesday, June 1 •Essay due to a Boston Public Library location: Monday, August 1 •Winners notified by phone: Wednesday, August 10 – Sunday, August 14 •Winners pick up tickets at the Boston Public Library location where they submitted their entry: Wednesday, August 17 – Monday, August 22 •Game day: Sunday, August 28 at 1:35 p.m., Red Sox vs. Royals at Fenway Park Museum of Science Animal Invaders Reptiles Kids discover how animal invaders make their way into homes and avoid detection. Children meet live animals and learn about amazing reptile characteristics. Science Magic Super-Cold Science Kids explore the science behind magic tricks while performing experiments. Children learn how dropping an object’s temperature leads to amazing results. Night Sky Rockets: There and Back Again Date DAY Kids design, build, and test balloon rockets and reentry parachutes. Branch/ Location Program Time Ready, Set, Make! Take Me Out to the Ballgame •Children and teens read at least three books, write a brief essay about their favorite, and submit the essay to any Boston Public Library location. Children explore the night sky, including stars, planets, and other celestial objects On Your Mark, Get Set ... READ! is sponsored by the Boston Public Library, the Massachusetts Library System, the Boston Bruins, and the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners.
