I showed up early, got a briefing of the happenings from the event organizers and tested the mic and sound systems. The kids hadn’t arrived yet, so I decided to meander about the auditorium. The derby track was like a giant Hot Wheel slide, except with 4 lanes - a far cry from the wooden system we had as kids. And the timing system… wow, no more stop watches. The starting gate was wired up to a laptop AND to the finish line. A digital read-out at the finish line indicted which lane came in 1st through 4th place. Results were fed into the laptop in real-time and posted onto a wall using a digital projector. I observed a few test runs of the adult volunteer cars. Not only did the digital age provide exact placement of cars crossing the finish line, but also stats like miles-per-hour and time. The adult-built cars were crossing the finish line at over 175mph! Yes, folks that’s gravity providing the power! (FWIW National winning cars come in at over 200+mph!) With all this high-tech wizardry, I almost forgot there was a race to be had! The participating children were all elementary school age boys and girls in their uniforms all cleaned and ironed for this big event. And the cars… yes, lots of cars… from ones looking like they were made the night before to ones made with some “adult-supervision.” Some cars were piloted by Lego figures and others with a lone lead weight. There were black cars, pink cars, cars with every hue of the rainbow and although each car was different, each represented the hope of sheer CONQUEST! The race got underway. I made the starting announcements, silenced the crowed for the national anthem, and the groups formed at the starting gate. One by one, each car was 4 Di e Flüs ter nde (e)B o m b e | J ANUARY 2014 placed gingerly at the starting line. And with a nod from the officiating time judge, the gate dropped. The room grew silent… and then the screams of kids, moms and dads filled the room, all cheered their creations onward. “Go! Go! Go!”.. followed by the sounds of victory or the agony of 2nd place. The cycle repeated itself for hours until there were only a few cars left standing. Fast forward into the future. The smell of fuel, oil, and burnt brake pads fill the air. Men and women scramble around the paddock – some with air tools, others with tires, and still others running to the pit area for some last minute strategizing for the big race. If you had a brief moment where you could stop and ask them, where did it all start? Was it engineering school? Was it turning the wrench with dad on the family car? Or was it over a block of wood on a Saturday morning years ago? The upcoming BMW Corral at Tudor United SportsCar Championship in Laguna Seca (May 2-4), just might give you that opportunity. With the merger of the American Le Mans Series and the GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series, there are over 40 teams available in the paddock area for you to engage with. See the technology that makes the cars go as well as chat with the mechanics or drivers. And in between the excitement, ask them how fast their pinewood cars were... J A N UA RY 2014 | D ie Flü s te r n d e (e)B o mb e 5 Eric Ries A Pictorial: Cars ‘n Coffee SF The first Cars and Coffee event that I hosted for our Chapter was a pretty small turn out. Probably not more than 10 people attended, but we had a great time socializing and checking out each others cars so I decided to host one every month going forward. Fast forward to April 2014 and it’s the official 2 year anniversary of that event and we’ve now hosted over 24. I continue to be amazed by the fact that I keep meeting new Members at every single one. We’ve also expanded from the South Bay to the East Bay, North Bay and the City. I’ve also seen our attendance balloon from just a few folks at that first one to almost 50 cars at the most recent San Francisco Cars and Coffee. As I reflect back on the past two years I can think of a ton of great stories and friends that I’ve gained from these events, but a recent one illustrates what the Cars and Coffee is all about. The weather was particularly crummy and I didn’t expect a great turn out. As the morning continued to pass and no one was showing up I started to think that I probably wouldn’t see anyone and I’d leave a bit early. Just about that time a very good looking 2002 pulled up and 6 Di e Flüs ter nde (e)B o m b e | J ANUARY 2014 parked next to my car. It was a Member who’d driven over an hour to attend the event. I was shocked to hear this and I asked him why he’d driven such a long distance? He’d just purchased a 2002 and wanted to show it off and meet fellow 2002 owners who could help him in his restoration journey. This is not an isolated event. I meet great Members at every single Cars and Coffee event I host or attend who are there to socialize and learn from the wealth of knowledge that exist in our Chapter. Stories like this perfectly encapsulate what the Cars and Coffee events are about and why they’ve quickly become our most popular event. We had 16 last year, by far the most of any single event type. This year won’t be any different with 14 already on the calendar and more to come. We are also working on partnerships with local dealers and shops who will host us in the coming months. Keep an eye on the website calendar (ggcbmwcca.org/events/) for updated information. If you’ve not attended a Cars and Coffee event, I highly recommend taking the time to swing by. They are usually on Saturdays from 9am-Noon but keep an eye on the calendar as that sometimes changes! The best part about these events is that there is no specific time commitment. If you want to hang out for a few minutes, that’s fine. If you want to hang out for 3 hours, that’s great too! Now that we have them all over the Bay it’s easier than ever to find one close by. When you attend, you’ll likely see me wandering around checking out the cool cars and introducing myself to as many people as I can. Mark Magee Why We Teach Car Control Each year the chapter holds a few clinics to teach the art and science of car control. These events require a lot of time, commitment and effort on the part of instructors and staff. Given all the effort, why do we keep doing this? Why do we teach? Because playing with cars is fun. Driving a car at the limit and beyond is a hoot. Given that it’s a controlled environment with margin for error, this is even true from the passenger seat. Because teaching car control makes us better drivers. You may think you know a subject, but that knowledge is tested when you have to explain it to someone else -- from scratch. It’s tested further when you have to guide someone else’s execution of an unfamiliar and non-intuitive task. Again and again I rediscover the dictum “the car goes where you’re looking.” Sometimes I find myself coming up with complicated explanations of how to maneuver the car, and realize I just need to say, “look at the tall cone.” Instructors revisit the basics, and reinforce their own foundational skills each time they climb in the passenger seat. Because we’re aware of the dangers of the street. The requirements to get a license in this country are amazingly lax. One merely has to demonstrate ability commensurate with driving to the grocery store and back, and is given the right to hurtle down the road in a metal box at tremendous speed. Our sensitivity to this issue is particularly acute when it comes to teen drivers. Teens are invincible -- in their own minds. That and inexperience are perhaps why motor vehicle fatality is the leading cause of death to teenagers, 10 Di e Flüs ter nde (e)B om b e | J ANUARY 2014 representing over one-third of all deaths. Our hope is that every clinic makes the roads a little safer by helping our students understand the machine, its limitations and their own limitations. Because we know “driver aids” don’t fix everything. ABS is awesome. It has reduced the incidence of rear-end collisions. ABS also makes it easier for drivers to swerve off the paved surface during an emergency stop. Traction control, all-wheel drive and stability control are awesome in slippery conditions. They allow people to achieve much greater speed than makes sense under the circumstances. Some day cars may be smart enough to take over all the tasks and all the judgment required to drive. Until then, we know that a trained driver is one of the best safety and performance upgrades for any car. You may be asking yourself, how do I get involved? The Car Control Clinic program has an ongoing need for new instructors and staff. Staff members just need to bring a desire to contribute and the energy to put in a day of work. Instructors just need a basic understanding of car control and vehicle dynamics. Intermediate and advanced HPDE students typically have the right level of knowledge. We have training material and a mentoring program to bring new instructors up to speed quickly. www.ggcbmwcca.org www.ggcbmwcca.org J A N UA RY 2014 | D ie Flü s te r n d e (e)B o mb e 11 Centerfold 12 Di e Flüs ter nde (e)B om b e | J ANUARY 2014 www.ggcbmwcca.org Dodging bullets and bad neighborhoods, “Vahag’s” Z3 M Coupe pauses for a quick snapshot. My old 1995 M3 had sprung a head gasket leak, and given a long commute into San Francisco, it just didn’t make financial sense to keep the car. So the M3 was sold to great home, but like most car guys, giving up your car is like giving up a piece of your soul. feature sets of the car: Bluetooth, NAV, the electric steering, etc. Me, I was still getting over the intoxication of the key start! Onto the freeway we went, the car has power. It’s a little docile though, but I think to myself, maybe it’s because it’s so refined. Johnny reaches over and hits the Driving Dynamics Control button. “OK,” he says, “NOW drive it.” (And don’t get me started about what it’s like to show up to GGC Club events in a Honda Civic… not that there’s anything wrong with that…) YEOW! It’s like the other 100 horses got let out of the barn and we’re hitched up to the stagecoach in mid-sprint! A push on the throttle threw me back into the drivers seat. Under the hood came a low growl as the turbos spun to life. The acceleration was stable and smooth as the needle approaches 90. Johnny didn’t look to concerned. I slow up a bit as we take the off-ramp at speed and I follow an exit Percy Chow Test Drive - BMW M235i Recently, I was at my desk at work when I received a call from Andy Nilon (another proud GGC member) who informed me that East Bay BMW had a brand new M235i on the lot. My ears perked up. He had just come from a visit there and saw it. He knew of my soulless void issues and called to me to consider taking a look at it. As soon as the office emptied of coworkers, I headed out. Johnny Ton was the first to greet me. He’s one of the many friendly client advisors at East Bay BMW - and like all of them, super professional and helpful. He took a break from the i3 event that afternoon to allow me a test drive of the M235i. While Johnny was off getting the keys and photocopying my info, I gave the M235i a look-around. It’s A LOT more sleek in person. Photos tend to exaggerate the bulbousness of the car. In person, not so at all. I guess it’s the difference between seeing things in 2D versus 3D. The M235i is very sleek, almost like a scaled down version of the 335i. Although the M235i is considered an as-close-to-Mcar-but-not-quite it does come with some nice M-brand details like brake calipers, steering wheel, sport-suspension, body kit, and of course, the incredibly lithe 320 horsepower, twin-scroll turbo motor. (Ok, the 8-speed auto transmission is pretty killer too.) So Johnny and I hopped in the car. The key is in the cupholder as I hit the start button. Vrooom! Man, the exhaust note is DEAD ON in this car! I always thought turbo motors were anemic sounding at start-up. This car-No. I gingerly drove off the dealership lot. Johnny was going over the 14 Di e Flüs ter nde (e)B om b e | J ANUARY 2014 line. The electric-assisted steering was pretty seamless, I’ve heard a lot of complaints about the use of electric-assist when it comes to a cars handling, but in this case, the M235i steering was very precise - allowing for a fairly light touch to carve the line you want to follow. Yes, but what are the compromises Percy? There’s got to be something! Honestly, THE WORST complaint I might have for the M235i was that it could be too quiet, too comfy. And perhaps that might be it’s greatest strength. MotorTrend’s Carlos Lago said, “The M235i is one of the best-driving BMWs in recent memory, on par with the 1M and the lastgeneration M3 not only in performance standards, but also in how much it makes you smile.” It’s staggering to even think, as good as this machine is, BMW has an M version on the horizon too. But what about today? BMW has released a decent sized, well-proportioned, nicely equipped subcompact car that not only handles well and looks great, but also puts up some numbers up there with it’s M bretheren. Enthusiasts WILL love this car, I know I did. Take a test drive and let me know what you think! Photos by Percy Chow www.ggcbmwcca.org www.ggcbmwcca.org J A N UA RY 2014 | D ie Flü s te r n d e (e)B o mb e 15 There’s been a lot of chatter for a long time about the impending demise of the row-your-own manual transmission. I’m not talking about those automated manuals – with or without an actual clutch or two – with acronyms lifted from the annals of phone company documentation such as DCT, DSG, PDK, etc. No, I speak of the real, three-pedal mechanical gear changers with a friendly stick emerging from either the floor or – if you’re old – the steering column. Let’s start with nomenclature. You can call them whatever you want. You can have paddles. You can have an up/down Jonathan Bush Garage Tech: Death of a Manual or left/right slot in the center console. You can have buttons on the steering wheel or on the side of the shift knob. But – and this is the key – if your car has only two pedals and/or has the ability to change gears all by itself, it’s an automatic. That’s really it. Given my druthers I’d rather have a three-pedal manual. I completely accept the fact the computer-controlled automatic is faster and more accurate. That’s great for the crowd who thinks that, just because they can lap Laguna Seca or the Nürburgring on a 40-inch screen, they can clearly do it in real life. Good for them, the artless hacks. I’m not going to complain about the lack of manual transmission options in new and newer cars and trucks, because after all this time I have come to realize that despite my age and household income landing me squarely in the appropriately juicy demographic, I will never be any manufacturer’s target market. 16 Di e Flüs ter nde (e)B om b e | J ANUARY 2014 www.ggcbmwcca.org I am an enthusiast who prefers older and old cars and will likely not ever buy a brand-new car again. This knowledge is not a burden to anyone. But more on the new-car thing in a minute. Several years ago while working as a service advisor at a Volkswagen dealership, I had a conversation with my friend Brian in the sales department. I had recently had part of my frontal lobe removed via my left eye socket, and was thinking about taking the company up on one of their ultra-cheap friends-and-family Sign & Drive lease deals. Side Note #1: I’m not morally opposed to leasing. Some will tell you it’s a waste of money, and that at the end of the term – since you’ve essentially been renting the car – you have nothing. A true statement, but realize you have the option to walk away from the car. No, it won’t be for free. But even if you have to write a $1000 check to not own a three-year-old VW just out of warranty… well that’s just money well spent. Anyway, I lamented to Brian the only options I would want on a then-new Passat CC is a 6-speed manual, heated seats, and a sunroof. Oh, he said, the manual is only available in the most basic of base models – i.e. no factory sunroof or heated seats. Further, assuming you wanted one of their nifty little Tiguans… well, you could only get a manual in the most basic of base models there, too. No 4Motion allwheel-drive, no aforementioned factory sunroof or heated seats. A manual was available on the 2-door Rabbit (née Golf ) but not the 4-door. I guess I could have gotten a diesel that wouldn’t start in the dead of winter, or a GTI. Side Note #2: A sunroof and/or heated seats could be added to almost any car, of course. However, my almost five years in service taught me to never, ever cut a hole in the roof of a new car, because that way lies madness. Conversely, we rarely had problems with the aftermarket tushy warmers, as opposed to the factory VW units that would occasionally light themselves –and you – on fire. I said to Brian if VW made the car I wanted, I would buy (lease, whatever) it on the spot. He said I wouldn’t, and he’s probably right. For people like me – all six of us – it’s more the idea of being able to buy a manual in a new car. My heart finds it sad that real manuals are going away in cars I could actually see owning someday. Ferraris and Lamborghinis don’t count. Even if I hit the lottery, nothing new from their showrooms would land in my garage. www.ggcbmwcca.org Jonathan Bush Freelance Journalist, Editor and Photographer Porsche seems to be making fewer and fewer manuals available in their new high-end models, but that’s okay, too. However, when that someday arrives I might want a justreleased BMW 4 series convertible – several owners down the road, of course – and there will be no manuals. Ditto an F31 3 series wagon, either with or without all-wheel-drive. And the X1. The list goes on. My head gets it, however. Thanks to federal guidelines, it’s hugely expensive to certify cars that will sell in only very small numbers. Example: Apparently the number of manual Lamborghini Gallardos sold was so small the factory called the dealers who did order one to confirm said order wasn’t a mistake. Car makers are in business to make money, not to cater to those six people who really want to row their own, but wouldn’t actually lay down the credit application. For several years BMW has had an interesting stance on the manual transmission. They say not a lot of buyers take manuals, so they don’t make more of them. (They also don’t include them in their lease deals.) However, anecdotally I’ve heard they can sell every manual-equipped car they build. So which is it? If they built more, would they sell more? Or if they built none –which seems to be the direction they’re headed – would they chalk it up to nobody wanting them? Is the marketing department telling us nobody wants manuals so they won’t build more and, since we can’t have them, we now don’t want them? My head hurts. Of course, several manufacturers still offer manuals, including BMW. But it seems for people like me the used market is the best hope. Every version of the E36 and E46 could be had in with a manual. Ditto the E34 and E39 5ers. Even some X5s – albeit with “only” the 3.0-liter – had a manual. Other manufacturers offered manuals as well in all manner of vehicles, some through the mid-2000s. The problem is every year those cars get older. Blvd. San Ramon, CA 94583 The Ultimate Un-Dealer Diablo Motors (925) 830-8747 What began 19 years ago as a love of cars for owner Greg Meier has grown into a plush showroom of over 50 luxury cars from BMW, Jaguar, Land Rover, Mercedes, and Lexus. Greg personally hand picks the cars he sells to assure the best quality pre-owned car value for you. When you walk into the showroom, you will most likely be met by Greg himself! WHAT KIND OF CERTIFIED PRE-OWNED EXPERIENCE SHOULD I EXPECT FROM DIABLO MOTORS? Diablo Motors currently holds the distinction of being an Honor Roll Member of the Better Business Bureau (18 years in a row), is the only Diamond Certified car dealer in the entire Bay Area (8 years in a row), and holds a five-star rating on Yelp. These are no small feats for any business, let alone used cars! When asked how in the world Greg can keep up that level of service, he replies, "It's pretty simple really. I sell my cars in the way that I would like to buy them…honest and straightforward, without the shell game. I want a friendly, professional, and hassle-free experience. We do that here. As a customer, I would want to be assured that my car will keep on running after I buy it so at Diablo Motors, we perform a 200-point inspection, a CarFax vehicle history report, and include a FREE 90-day warranty. If the customer prefers more coverage, we have some great extended warranty partners also. And we do all of this at a discount… about the same as KBB ‘Private Party” pricing” DOES DIABLO MOTORS OFFER FINANCING? WHO DOES THE DMV PAPERWORK? "We deal directly with banks and credit unions to offer you the best finance rates, currently as low as 1.99%. We can also work with your existing bank/credit institution if you prefer. And we do some in-house loans too. As far as DMV paperwork, we handle all of that. We will make this your easiest car purchase ever." AND WHAT ABOUT MAINTENANCE & REPAIR? "We also operate a full service department right here on site, fully insured and licensed by the Bureau Of Automotive Repair. We can do everything from routine maintenance like oil changes and inspections, all the way up to complete engine or transmission replacement. So if you loved how you were treated while buying one of our cars, that same caring, professional, and courteous attitude goes into our service." WHAT IF I DON'T SEE THE CAR I WANT ON THE WEBSITE OR LOT? "I attend the dealer-only lease return auctions every week. So if a customer has a certain type of car in mind, just let me know what that is, and I can get it for you at no extra charge. I’m there anyway! We can save you thousands on a nice clean certified car, and without all the running around. We've picked up everything from Civics to Range Rovers, but our specialty is BMW.” Diablo Motors is located right on San Ramon Valley Boulevard, near In-N-Out Burger and Costco. www.diablomotors.com www.ggcbmwcca.org J A N UA RY 2014 | D ie Flü s te r n d e (e)B o mb e 29 Servicing BMW's in Campbell since 1990 BMW Scheduled Inspections and Service Preventive Maintenance, Repairs and Upgrades for: Engine Transmission and Driveline Suspension Brakes 408-379-7828 25 S.
