1 ANNUAL REPORT 20 2 THE EXPANSION 3 MANAGER’S STATEMENT W orking in a museum, art gallery and archive as we do, it is not uncommon to be busy packing boxes with artifacts, sorting through and organizing various documents, and carefully wrapping artwork so it can be moved without harm. For Peel Heritage Complex (PHC) staff, 2011 found them busier than usual with this type of work because it was the “year of the move.” Not one. Not two. But three moves. None of them involved collections per se, but rather the entire administration including files, artworks and personal collections of the things that make a cubicle one’s own. Fortunately, in early December, the last move was back to the PHC site, where staff undertook a further transformational step: the move from being the Peel Heritage Complex to being the Peel Art Gallery, Museum and Archives (PAMA). A new name and a new brand were launched, complete with all the attendant shifts in thinking about what we are and what we do. Delays in construction and the further pushing out of opening dates gave staff more than their fair share of adjusting and fine tuning plans. Add in a new Director (Karla Hale), a new Supervisor of Museum and Archives (Marty Brent) and myself as the new Manager, and you can understand why it has been a very full year of shifting gears and adjusting to change. In ending another year of operations, a special thank you goes to Diane Allengame for keeping the operation functioning through all this change during her tenure as Acting Manager, and to Erin Black, our Project Co-ordinator for the extraordinary amounts of work these multiple moves have entailed. As well, thanks to Josie Premzell for her exceptional efforts to launch multiple new operations within PAMA and congratulations to Judy Daley in her move from Acting Curator to Curator, a promotion well-earned. Finally, kudos to the staff for their ongoing efforts as they continue to move the organization towards re-opening and a big thank you to all the amazing volunteers that have helped us through these many transitions. CLAIRE LOUGHHEED Manager, Peel Art Gallery, Museum and Archives 4 5 CHAIR’S STATEMENT O n Dec. 9, 2011, the Museum and Art Gallery staff members moved back into the Courthouse at 3 Wellington St. E. in the geographic centre of the Region of Peel. It was a very exciting day and the first step in having the whole building being passed back into our hands in 2012. Since we have been closed for over two years, some may believe not much is going on at the Peel Heritage Complex. This could not be further from the truth. Our staff made over 400 presentations across the region, visiting 3,195 students, 6,323 seniors and 4,812 members of the public at community outreach events. This is more than one every day of the year. Our staff has been planning the new exhibition spaces, building models of the rooms and moving the displays around like a fancy dollhouse. Our new Aboriginal gallery is ready for installation once the jail building is fully ‘handed over.’Our volunteers put in over 2,400 hours working with staff to provide assistance to researchers, help with mailings to members, assist collections staff with preparing the collection for opening, and act as community advisors on the Board and committees. In donated hours, this is the equivalent of over a full-time staff position. Our Board has continued to work hard to reinvent itself through our strategic planning process for our important role in our expanded cultural facility. We will need to raise more money and work harder to help our staff with their new and more complex workloads. The incredible Passages website was created to allow us all to share stories from our pasts. I encourage you all to put your story of a life changing event or object up on the web page and to read the stories of others who have already made it to the site at peelregion.ca/heritage/passages. Finally, moving back into the building created the need for a reinvention of the whole institution. The Board, staff and community stakeholders were consulted in a lengthy process that resulted in a new name for us. Peel Art Gallery, Museum and Archives (PAMA) was unveiled. In the weeks and months ahead watch as we slowly move back into the full set of buildings on the site. 2012 will be one of the most exciting years in the history of heritage, arts and culture in Peel County from its beginning in 1867. Lastly, I want to thank all our staff, volunteers, Board and committee members for their dedication and hard work. We look forward to hosting you all at the new PAMA in 2012. CHARLES SCOTT Chair Peel Heritage Complex Advisory Board GRANTS The Art Gallery received an operating grant from the Ontario Arts Council Operating Grant for Arts Organizations as well from the Ontario Arts Council’s Arts Investment Fund. Both of these grants will fund several Gallery operations. With support from the Brampton and Area Community Foundation, the Creative Therapy/Creative Expressions program was able to continue for another successful year. The Museum received funding from the Community Museum Operating Grant which will support operating costs for the Museum. 6 7 THE EXPANSION Erin Black – Project Co-ordinator For Erin, 2011 was a truly collaborative year. In establishing project timelines and work-plans, she worked in partnership with PAMA staff, keeping them up-to-date with construction schedules and projected building handovers. Continued discussion with the Region’s Real Property Asset Management Team, Goldsmith Borgal & Company Ltd. Architects (GBCA) and Dixon informed the planning and facilitated understanding of the new campus. Throughout the spring and summer Erin contributed to the Customer Service Integration (CSI) team’s pilot project by developing a series of process maps for public-serving operations. These serve as the foundation for the CSI team’s reconfiguration and validation of processes that intersect with Regional service delivery activities. In conjunction with the Region’s Relocation Project Team, which consisted of a core group from Design & Accommodation, Asset Renewal and Construction (ARC), Health & Safety, and Property Management, Erin orchestrated three successful staff relocations. This involved finalizing seating plans, the transfer and accommodation of ancillary furniture, locating adequate storage facilities at each site, and the procurement of furniture for staff’s new office spaces at Wellington. It was with the Project Team’s dedication that PAMA staff made it ‘home for the holidays.’ Above: Carving out the Tunnel Below left: Art Gallery Exhibition Space Below: Storage for Art Gallery and Museum Collections Left: View of Courthouse from glass atrium in entrance to new Art Gallery Above: Tunnel Skylights in Courtyard 8 9 THE ARCHIVES Diane Allengame – Regional Archivist 2011 was a year of change and growth for Diane. In July her term as Acting Manager came to an end and the responsibility of moving the complex along on its transformation journey transitioned to Claire Loughheed. Diane concentrated on museum exhibition redevelopment and is currently enjoying the world of interpretive planning. Brian Gilchrist – Reference Archivist During 2011, Brian was able to accomplish a number of key tasks – not the least of which was responding to over 3,000 emails and telephone requests. His work in keeping up with donor relations resulted in 188 new accessions and he was also asked to give presentations to four groups which had a total of over 825 people in attendance. Brian’s most important accomplishment was supervising the completion of a data set on known burial places in the Region of Peel in conjunction with the Region’s Integrated Planning division. Now available online, each known burial site has some meta-data publicly available such as GPS, boundaries, and in some cases, area, religious affiliation, and status. This great resource will not only assist a variety of consultants, planners and developers with their future projects but also be an asset to genealogists and local historians in their work. The Collection While construction continued on Wellington Street, the Archives maintained off-site reference and acquisition services throughout 2011 and provided information to over 3,000 enquiries. During this time, the Reading Room was relocated three times. Many thanks to our volunteers who cheerfully packed and unpacked microfilm and books. The Collection also grew in interesting ways. A significant study collection was created in 2011 with the acquisition of more than 30 newspapers with a South Asian focus, all with a Peel connection. The Goan Archives of Canada approached PAMA to help them catalogue their records prior to them being donated to the collection. The Archives also examined best practices and worked on a strategy that will further entrench its position as a leader in the provision of archives and reference services in Peel. David’s family has a long history in the Mayfield area. We are grateful for his donations over the years and will miss him. Judy Daley – Curator/Supervisor of Education Services During this past year, Judy has been fine tuning the exhibition plan for 2012–14 and working on new partnerships with organizations including the South Asian Visual Arts Centre (SAVAC) and Cambridge Galleries. PAMA’s amazing collection of art has continued to grow through the generosity of donors and purchases that were made with the assistance of the David Somers Works on Paper Endowment. Judy, along with colleagues, worked on the development and launch of the Passages interactive website. This website has been a great way to reach the public during the closure and build audiences for the upcoming grand re-opening. Judy was officially hired as the Gallery Curator/Supervisor of Education Services in October 2011. Gerrie Loveys – Assistant Curator The permanent art collection has been Gerrie’s main focus this year especially since a significant number of donations of art and reference books were received. She was also involved with preparing for the move of the art collection into the new galleries and storage areas. Gerrie worked with textile artist Sue Sturdy on the Colourful Roots project which was launched in August. Since that time, Gerrie has been promoting the project at the Farmers’ Market and through talks at area schools, guilds and clubs. All submissions have been photographed and the names of crafters entered onto the Colourful Roots website. Accessioning donations and preparing Canadian Cultural Property Export Review Board applications are ongoing and major tasks for Gerrie. 12 13 THE ART GALLERY The Collection Two hundred and twenty works of art, donated by 24 donors, were accepted into the permanent collection of the Peel Art Gallery in 2011. These works represent a variety of media including prints, drawings, paintings, sculpture and photographs. Of special note are gifts from long-term supporters Al and Simmie Rain and John and Gisela Sommer, which include Peel connected works that will be featured in the inaugural showing in the Permanent Collection Galleries in the new Gallery. Annemarie Hagan donated two works by her late father, Frederick Hagan. Several artists donated their own works: Carl Heywood (88 prints), John Armstrong (three paintings), and Peggy Reid Taylor (one photograph). Nine applications for donations consisting of approximately 137 art works will be submitted to the Canadian Cultural Property Export Review Board for the 2011 tax year. Three purchases of art were made in 2011 by artists Sara Angelucci, Jeannie Thib and Ron Shuebrook. Right: Allan Edson Unknown (landscape) n.d. Watercolour on paper Gift of Joan and W. This interactive web project invites the public to share the stories connected to their treasured objects. Visitors to the site can upload their photo and story, and view the evolving gallery of submissions. Over 150 stories are currently featured on the website and from these, a collective history that reflects the diversity of the Peel community emerges.” The Passages website is part of a larger project which will play into one of the inaugural exhibitions in the new Art Gallery. This exhibition will weave together the online submissions to the website with a display of work by contemporary artists whose work examines personal history. The Passages project is guest curated by Christine Boyanoski for the Peel Art Gallery, Museum and Archives. My mother, the pilot. Submitted by Judy Daley 16 17 THE MUSEUM Marty Brent Supervisor of Museum and Archives Marty is a new addition to PAMA, having joined the team on the home stretch to re-opening. Her role includes shaping and refining the museum interpretive plan and exhibition development project, connecting to external partners, and assisting with the myriad of projects that all lead to opening day and beyond. David Farrell The Collection The Museum collection continued to grow in 2011, most notably by the acquisition of a beautiful purple and silver sari, made around 1920 in Varanasi, India, formerly known as Benares. This silk wedding sari was handed from mother to daughter-in-law, and came to Canada in the 1960s. This piece tells a wonderful story of family, tradition and new beginnings. A story from closer to home is told through a machinist’s tool chest, used at Orenda Engines in Malton during the time the Iroquois engine was being developed for the AVRO Arrow. Brampton Councillor John Sanderson remembers his father bringing the chest home after the cancellation of the project in 1959. Collections Registrar For David, 2011 has been a year focussed on collections, both in context of the expansion project and for future initiatives. His job sometimes leads to the unexpected, such as discovering the history of a mid-19th century rosewood piano that had been in the collection since 1977. It also required David to recognize resource needs, which resulted in the recruitment of a team of four specialized volunteers who will help with the care and cataloguing of the textile collection. Maureen Couse Exhibition Co-ordinator Being off-site for most of 2011 provided a great opportunity for Maureen to visit other museums for inspiration and ideas. During the year, she was heavily involved in developing the exhibition plans, creating models of the spaces and familiarizing herself with the Accessibility Standards Act in order to apply the policies to the new spaces. Volunteers have been active rolling, wrapping and identifying quilts and other textiles. Horizontal hanging storage for textiles has been built into the storage area in the Art Gallery, freeing up storage space in the East Wing (former Jail) for the growing artifact collection. In 2011 the Museum acquired 18 artifacts, seven of which were gifts-in-kind. The highlights of the 2011 Museum collections donations include: • A 1901 Caledon Fair silver medal awarded for “Best Road Horse in Harness” • A Boy Scouts pennant from the 1953 Peel County Coronation Camporee • A machinist’s tool chest and tools used by an Orenda employee • A violet and silver silk wedding sari, made in Varanasi, India, circa 1922 Another noteworthy addition to the collection is a wooden watermain transferred from the Region of Peel Public Works Department. Found on Airport Road, east of Lester B. Pearson Airport in 2004, this length of pipe was probably installed in 1938 to feed water to the Malton Airport or to the National Steel Car airplane manufacturing facility that was built around that time. Celebrating the region’s roots in horticulture, the public is invited to knit, sew, stitch and quilt their own ‘flower’ to be planted in our fibre garden. This public art garden will be revealed at the re-opening of the Peel Art Gallery, Museum and Archives in 2012. colourfulroots.com While visitors could not come to us, we took the Museum to the community. We had the opportunity to install exhibitions in two spaces at Shoppers World Brampton. Selections from the Museum’s collection of sewing machines and quilts were displayed in the windows of the Fabricland store. Due to the light levels in the case, we could not exhibit the artifact quilts, but large-size images and details of who created each quilt were hung alongside sewing machines from 1865 through 1901. With the help of Andrew Sarookanian, our summer intern from Sir Sanford Fleming College, we installed “School’s Out: Toys and Games from the Region of Peel Museum.” Some of our favourite toys including a teddy bear, toy soldiers, a tea set and a fire truck caught the eye of many students “hanging out at the mall” last summer! Old favourites will remain and have been updated based on teacher, student and educator feedback as well as on the new spaces and stories that have been created in the exhibitions. One of the main goals for the Education Department is to make sure there are family-friendly spaces within all the galleries. To this end, many great hands-on spaces and activities for all ages have been created and designed. Angie has also sat in on the Museum Exhibition committee and is part of the Art Gallery planning process. This opportunity has helped to ensure that the student experience is built into the overall design of the spaces. Alicia Mitchell – Education Co-ordinator Over the past year, Alicia immersed herself in PHC’s past and delved into PAMA’s future while still co-ordinating and maintaining the present outreach programs. Between the everyday organization of the Seniors’ Outreach programs, she has also developed two new presentations. School Programming Seniors’ programs Although PHC was closed, educators still travelled all across Peel to deliver many of the popular school programs. In 2011, PHC educators worked with 294 school groups totalling 8,108 students. Closed for renovations does not mean “closed” for the Education Team. This has been especially true for the seniors’ outreach program. The team travelled to 34 private and Region of Peel long term care and retirement centres. Throughout 2011, Heritage Educators, Carol Montoute, and Diane Pierce delivered 12 different Museum Memories: Reminiscing for Seniors programs to over 6,000 seniors. PHC also continued to provide the Creative Therapy and Creative Expressions programs to schools and community centres providing this great service to 84 groups with 812 participants. School programs First Visit Art SmART First Nations Settlers and Simple Machines Watercolours Printmaking Faux Oil Painting Petroglyph Printmaking Blobs & Daubs Wavy & Jagged Numbers also started to increase for the Young at HeART program. Educator Glynnis Koloszar joined Diane Pierce in facilitating these art workshops. Over 330 seniors tried their hand at watercolour painting, printmaking and creating haikus to incorporate into their pieces. Seniors Programs and Presentations Brought to you by . . . Christmas Songs Christmas Traditions Home Cookin’ In the Pink Alicia has been planning for registered and public programming for the grand opening and beyond. With exhibitions as the starting point, she has been planning programs for adults, children and seniors for the next three years and hopes the public is as excited as she is. We really appreciate all of your services and look forward to doing it again this year. – Mary Centre – Day Program Co-ordinator We are so thrilled to be part of this program. It is so therapeutic for the adults we support and our instructor is great. She is well organized, creative, patient and truly genuine. She takes the time to explain everything. She treats our participants with dignity and respect. – SNAPSO Day Program Co-ordinator DEVELOPMENT Josie Premzell – Supervisor of Development and Visitor Services The lead up to our re-opening has been a hectic one with work for the re-opening as well as day-to-day projects on the go. Some of the major projects Josie has managed include: working with Regional departments to plan for signage and ensure the new front desk staff will be ready for visitors; creating a Marketing Strategy to get the word out about the fabulous new facility; re-naming the organization and getting the information to members and the public; working on the re-design of a new website that will launch a few months before the opening; and creating a business and merchandising plan for the PAMA store. Best of all, Josie was involved with planning the opening to welcome donors, members, volunteers and the public to the Peel Art Gallery, Museum and Archives. Denise Gouveia – The program was absolutely fantastic. – Esker Lake Public School Teacher Development Co-ordinator One of Denise’s major goals this year was to keep the donors, members and volunteers up-to-date with construction, program and events updates. Whether through Strata, correspondence, community events like the Brampton Farmers’ Market or the new social media outlets like Facebook and Flickr, Denise has managed to keep in touch with PAMA stakeholders. She has also had the opportunity to develop new volunteer, member and facility rentals programs – all ready to launch when the facility opens. Gayle Mitchell – Community Liaison Gayle’s responsibility is the day-to-day administration that keeps PAMA operating. She looks after booking school and seniors programs, invoicing clients and financial reporting. Behind the scenes she is responsible for updating staff vacations and sick days, reconciliating Regional credit card reports for staff, ordering office supplies and getting mailings out to members, donors and volunteers. Left: Creative Therapy at SNAPSO Right: Creative Expressions at St Marguerite D’Youville Social Media It has become apparent that social media is here to stay. Museums and galleries are constantly finding new ways to use the countless programs for their own benefit – PAMA is no different. Currently, we have two social media sites: Facebook and Flickr. Our Facebook page allows our ‘friends’ to view current photos, read interesting articles about PAMA and other sites, and learn about upcoming events. Flickr is our photo sharing site where we post images from our collection. Both sites are achieving great success and as more and more people ‘visit us,’ ‘like us’ and ‘friend us,’ PAMA will go viral – which is a good thing! We invite you to visit the PAMA Facebook page and Flickr photostream. 24 25 THE YEAR 2011 2011 Special Events Brampton Day Brampton Farmers’ Market Highlight on Heritage Exhibition opening reception: A Lasting Gift: Selections from the John and Gisela Sommer Collection at the Joshua Creek Heritage Arts Centre, Oakville Meadowvale 175th Anniversary: special display about noted artists connected with Meadowvale Village 2011 Community Partners Alton Mill Exhibition – The Seaton Group Arts Liaison Partnership Beaux Arts Brampton Brampton Arts Council Brampton Caledon Community Living Brampton Heritage, Art, Culture and Entertainment District Brampton Heritage Board Brampton Historical Society Brampton Public Library Brampton Seniors Club 106 Bruce Trail Conservancy Canadian Museum Association – Canadians and Their Pasts Project City of Brampton City of Mississauga Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board Fabricland Shoppers World Father Francis McSpiritt Elementary School Friends of Historic Bovaird House Heritage Caledon Heritage Mississauga Massey Hall Public School Mississauga Heritage Foundation Mississauga Library System Museums of Mississauga Peel Aboriginal Network (PAN) Peel District School Board Peel Seniors Sites Perkins Bull Collection Inc.
