Danish C & YA literature fully deserves its own Enjoy reading about early-readers, picture books, international stage. As readers will discover, it’s just as read-aloud books and novels; about everyday life and rich, varied and cutting-edge as ever. No subject is too reality through the eyes of children, about new and ‘heavy’ or complex for Danish C & YA creators. Death, well established authors and illustrators. In short, for example, looms large in quite a number of books, we present here a range of brilliantly produced and even at the younger end of the genre. And many throw designed C & YA books that are setting the Danish a reflective and revealing light on really big questions: trend. Anna Margrethe Kjærgaard’s brushstrokes capture the ominous atmosphere of war. The story is told from the child’s perspective. A child whose red dress is very effectively drawn as the only real colour amongst the otherwise grey-toned images. 2 Mit hus – den dag freden forsvandt (My home – the day peace was shattered) Jensen & Dalgaard 2015, 44 pages. Nominated for the Nordic Council’s C & YA Literature Prize Mette Hegnhøj’s poetic and style-breaking children’s novel is a book that, as Berlingske’s reviewer says. ”... sneaks like a cat right into the most vulnerable part of the reader’s heart.” Information was also thrilled with this daringly stylish work and says the author has “... managed to depict and concretize intangible things like loss, powerlessness and grief.” Mette Hegnhøj’s book about Ella, whose mother runs a second hand bookshop and wants to hear nothing more about cats, is a about a girl who misses her cat desperately, and maybe her dad as well. Mette Hegnhøj has won the Ministry of Culture’s Children and YA author award for this work. Hanne Bartholin (born 1962) debuted as a picture book illustrator in 1995 and has produced a wide range of distinguished and award winning publications. 4 ANNE SOFIE HAMMER PHOTO: ALEXANDER BANCK-PETERSEN A MODERN EMIL Her debut was a long time coming, but there’s no stopping her now, and her most recent books have been made into films. Ever since Anne Sofie Hammer was small, she dreamt of being an author, but as she grew to adulthood and took in the world around her, she realised that it wasn’t something you just suddenly ‘became’. Thus, many years would pass before she felt ready to begin writing books. After having children, she felt there was a need for a good reading-aloud book that would suit a number of age groups. This was the springboard for Villads fra Valby (Villads from Valby). Valby is a middleclass suburb of Copenhagen, but that isn’t really a factor kids like Villads are to be found anywhere and everywhere in this world. Kids that are highly curious, full of energy and imagination. Kids ”Ever heard of a kid called Villads Emilio Eskildsen? A lot of people say Villads is a right troublemaker. But that’s not actually true. He’s just a really nice, normal kid who’s sometimes a bit unlucky when he’s playing. And who’s also very good at coming up with great ideas.” Extract from VILLADS FRA VALBY PÅ SOMMERFERIE (VILLADS FROM VALBY ON SUMMER HOLIDAY) that don’t mean to do wrong, but who always seem to end up in trouble anyway. ANNE SOFIE HAMMER (b. 1972) worked for a number of years as a text editor, before debuting in 2009 with Villads fra Valby (Villads from Valby). John Kenn Mortensen has drawn since he was a boy, and he has always found a curious comfort zone in sombre tones. That said, humour and irony are always present in his work. In Turen gennem midnatsskoven (Journey through the Midnight 6 Forest), we meet Dennis, a diminutive troll, who wants the introverted, three-legged Petro to be his BFF. But Petro will only be friends if Dennis can get him the best wand in the whole forest. So Dennis sets off to the Midnight Forest, which is under a curse this last 10,000 years. Here he meets, amongst many others, the bat-girl, Lizzy, who wants to help him, and later Charles the spider whose friend the young unicorn, Samantha, has fallen into the Bottomless Well. Cannibal Clowns and hovering witches also appear as part of an impressive cast of weirds. Turen gennem midnatsskoven (Journey through the Midnight Forest) manages to be both creepy and funny, and the large format foldout pages are so detailed you JOHN KENN MORTENSEN R MASTE R ”My name’s Dennis. I’m a troll. And this is Lizzy. She’s a kind of bat-girl vampire and super hero, if you must know.” Extract from TUREN GENNEM MIDNATSSKOVEN (JOURNEY THROUGH THE MIDNIGHT FOREST) want to hang them up on your wall. This is a book for older children who enjoy being scared to death one minute and laughing the next. But it’s for all of us really. In fact, most of John Kenn Mortensen’s work is like that. Now he’s working on his next book - Mareridtsfabrikken og andre rædsler (The Nightmare Factory and Other Terrors) with 34 nightmare poems and scenarios. John Kenn Mortensen (b. 1978) has worked as an illustrator and film director. His own comic book debut came in 2011 with Post-it Monstre (Post-it Monsters), which won an award for best comic debut. 2014 saw the publication of his first novel De utilpassede (The Deviants). Apart from drawing and writing books, Mortensen also engages in international collaborations. He has illustrated the Danish version (Hans og Grete) of Neil Gaiman’s ‘Hansel and Gretel’ and produced conceptart for the Dreamworks studio. He has a huge international fan group, with over 80.000 followers on social media. Turen gennem midnatsskoven (Journey through the Midnight Forest) Carlsen 2015, 32 pages. True to the fantasy genre but with succinct references to the “real” world. Cecilie Eken is a child of the 70s, a time when literary discourse was highly political and large swathes of Scandinavian children’s literature was message based. But Eken herself has always been more animated by the realm of magic. That’s not to say her own books don’t carry a message, but they’re always in a well-crafted context. Eken’s latest book Natulv (Night Wolf) shows this very well. Events take place at the start of the 1900s and there’s a Gothic, Wuthering Heights feel. The 14-15 year old Nethe has lost her mother and is, 140 mm 10,5 At night time, a wolf-like animal terrorises the area. It doesn’t just kill hens and geese, but also larger animals, even humans. And nobody can get to grips with this wolf, until Dagfred asks Nethe to go out with him at night and help hunt the wolf. countries “Darien” and “Beleria”. Max’s dad was a pilot, but he was shot down and his mother died of a highly contagious fever. Now Max is serving as an air-cadet and dreams of being a fighter pilot. Even though that dream collapses, Max at least comes to realise that a lust for revenge can also have consequences. Just like the Japanese filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki, these books delight in planes, cars, and motorcycles. They also feature rich black and white illustrations by the artist Peter Heydenreich. But the little boy has a halfbrother, Dagfred, who’s the same age as Nethe and son of the house’s earlier Lady. Her death is shrouded in mystery and Dagfred believes his new stepmother is a witch. Natulv (Night Wolf) is a mixture of historical novel, thriller and horror. The “message” that Cecilie Eken has deftly woven into the story is what can happen if we are stopped from mourning our dearly departed. In the easy reading series, Max Vero (Max Vero) for slightly younger readers, there’s lots of tension and action, but no horror. Yes, losing one’s parents is a constant theme, but the tone in this series about Max and his friends is lighter, even though these youngsters are dragged into a war between the Cecilie Eken was born in 1970 and debuted at 23. She has since written a wide range of C & YA books. She won the Ministry of Culture’s Children’s author award for C & YA books in both 1997 and 2008, for Sikkas fortælling (Sikka’s Tale) and her poetic picture book Mørkebarnet (The Dark Child) respectively. Eken is also very well known for the fantasy series Den Sorte Safir (The Black Sapphire). Cecilie Eken is member of the adjudication panel for the Nordic Council’s C & YA Literature Prize. CECELIE EKEN PHOTO: AGNETE SCHLICHTKRULL “Eken balances Nethe’s vulnerability, Dagfred’s unpredictability and the horror at large, both outside and inside the manor house, very well. The story twists and turns and guessing the ending is nigh impossible. The novel is part psychological thriller and part horror. A good book for our long winter evenings. Or for reading aloud at a campfire in the dead of night.” WEEKENDAVISEN “It’s late when I ascend the cold winding-staircase, a candlestick in my hand. All the way up to the top floor and then right down the passage with its empty rooms, then across another staircase. Just as I reach the door to the nursery, a shape emerges in front me. ”Nethe?” My banging heart cuts my breath. ”Don’t be afraid. It’s only me.” The young master’s hand brushed my arm. ”I’ve been waiting for you.” The tin candleholder shakes in my hand. The pressing dark around the small circle of light seems to force us towards each other.” Extract from Natulv (Night Wolf) 9 DANISH LITERARY MAGAZINE / CHILDREN & YOUNG ADULTS BOOKS IN BRIEF A FRIEND IN NEED … Felix the cat wants to play hide and seek but you can’t do that on your own. REALITY BITES REALITY THE TRANSITION FROM CHILD TO ADULT STAGE IS SELDOM EASY OR STRAIGHTFORWARD AND, IN ONE WAY OR ANOTHER, MOST BOOKS FOR TEENS ARE ABOUT THIS TRANSITION. OLDER CHILDREN’S LITERATURE SOMETIMES DEALS WITH THIS TRANSITION VIA SUBJECTS LIKE DEATH, AS A STARK SYMBOL OF THE LOSS OF CHILDHOOD INNOCENCE. The child/adult transition is also sometimes explored by describing life after a close relative, or friend, has died or suffered a terrible accident. The world is changed forever and nothing will ever be the same again. This situation can be portrayed in many ways. At present in Denmark there are many young and promising authors who choose to describe this transition with an intriguing mix of deep empathy and a very direct style. The language is often sparse and unsentimental. At its best, it’s a very effective form of realism. A smack in the face for false sentiment. 19 DANISH LITERARY MAGAZINE / CHILDREN & YOUNG ADULTS FRIDAY SATURDAY Vi er out in the open: Nynne siger, at jeg fandme var en lort i går, jeg siger, hvad fuck hun mener med det. But it can also be read privately by children … The disaster isn’t portrayed in a raw and brutal fashion but, rather, very sensitively and movingly.” BØGER TIL BØRN Author Ida-Marie Rendtorff is better known for sci-fi and fantasy works, but this short novel contains no submerged cities or despotic rulers. Instead, we simply have a young girl who feels as though she’s had an arm and leg cut off because she can’t be with her mother and sister. Felicia is a bit like Mona above - alone with her father and using every chance to sneak off. In her case to her mother and sister who are elsewhere. She shuts herself off from the rest of the world. This includes a really annoying boy who’s just moved into the area and does what he can to break through her protective bubble. This is a novel about great loss and big choices at a very young age. As so often with Rendtorff, this heralds a transition to a new life. Thus, even though the book is full of grief and melancholy, hope is also present. INFORMATION XY This novel, too, deals with loss, but here the loss is one’s self and one’s own identity. One day, the 15 year old Asta is taking a shower, she feels a wrench in her groin area and it transpires that she is actually, in genetic terms, a boy. She is left completely devastated and feels so estranged from her own self that she contemplates suicide. But then she meets Christoffer who has also attempted suicide. Asta falls in love with him, but is it possible to love without sex coming into the equation? Few young people will ever experience exactly what Asta does in this novel, but the debate about gender and sexual identity has been a hot topic in recent years and has blossomed within YA literature. The work of American author David Levithan and other international authors is further evidence of this. Nicole Boyle Rødtnes. XY (XY) Alvilda 2015, 208 pages. REALITY BITES IK ID DEAD “In the odd weeks my mum can do exactly what she likes. She can lie on the sofa and read books, she can go the cinema at midnight, and she can eat a TV dinner. Whatever. Order a pizza maybe. Not exactly allowed in the even weeks ... In the even weeks, she has to peel potatoes, read homework, follow the news, go to parent teacher stuff and eat broccoli salad with skimmed milk. It’s actually not so weird that my mum prefers being divorced.” (QUOTE FROM THE BOOK) Grief and death and losing someone one holds dear become concrete in Caroline Ørsum’s very well written youth novel Kære dumme døde Vik (Dear Stupid Dead Vik). Selma and her boyfriend Vik are in a car accident. She survives. He doesn’t. But just before the accident, something happened. Maybe Vik and another girl? Selma isn’t sure, and the doubt eats away at her. As this goes on, she has to start a new life with facial burn marks, a smashed foot and carrying a lost love. Sure it’s harsh and wretched, but the author is never mawkish and has pitch perfect control of the narrative. This lends a real sense of authenticity and engagement to the novel - you can’t rush healing and you can only talk about painful things when you’re ready. Caroline Ørsum. ODD WEEKS TIME AND OTHER TALES ABOUT THE REST OF THE Ulige uger (Odd weeks) deals with a quite different but equally contemporary, serious and troubling issue for many children and youths, namely divorce. The book is a collection of shorter texts from the child’s point of view, either just before the parents announce they’re to separate, or just after this has taken place. The child’s life becomes split into even and odd weeks – one week with mum, one with dad. The author has also created a special divorced-child glossary with new terms like those used when kids want to get their little brother or sister to refuse to go to sleep, so that parents don’t get a chance to quarrel in the evening. Benni Bødker primarily writes easy-reading books that usually features horror, historical fiction, crime and science-fiction. Boys, especially, seem to be fond of his diverse territories. His stories are full of tension, mystery and ancient legends. But even though his books overflow with zombies, vampires and blood, there’s still lots of room for humour. Jeg venter i mørket (I wait in the dark) is part of the 666 horror series but, as it’s also Benni Bødker’s 100 th book, he decided to make it a bit different to the others. It comprises of four short stories that, over just a few pages, really get under the skin of its readers. Take the toy shop for example that snatches the souls of children; a grave robber who meets the Grim Reaper himself, and a diver that decides to rob an old slave ship and gets more than he bargained for down below - arrogance and what happens if you don’t give Death its due respects. 24 PHOTO: BJARKE AHLSTRAND / ONE OF MANY BENNI BØDKER was born in 1975 and studied Danish and philosophy at university. Extract from JEG VENTER I MØRKET (I WAIT IN THE DARK) 25 DANISH LITERARY MAGAZINE / CHILDREN & YOUNG ADULTS ”Once again, Bent Haller demonstrates his virtuosity in creating atmospheres and intimations – laying bare the peculiar way adults interact with children.” POLITIKEN A MAG STORYT Author Bent Haller feels like a deep well; one that can never dry up. His font of new stories is eternal. Bent Haller is 70 in 2016, and it’s been 40 years since his social realist debut novel Katamaranen (The Catamaran), which portrays the soul destroying life of a group of youths in a concrete jungle. The book unleashed a huge debate about what was ‘suitable’ literature for children and for a time many libraries refused to stock it. 26 Bent Haller’s works still pose questions for society, but he has moved away from social realism. He writes for both children and adults, but is mainly known as an author of children’s books. Haller doesn’t stick to one particular genre; he moves between magic realism, legends, stories and fairy-tales; between present and past, sea and land, the world or the heavens. His best known works are: Kaskelotterne sang (The Song of the Sperm Whales) and Fredsaberne (The Peace Apes). Several of his books have been made into films. In Bent Haller’s latest book Magnolia af Skagerrak (Magnolia of Skagerrak), magic emerges in an ostensibly run of the mill story about kids on a summer holiday with their grandparents. The youngest, Magnolia, catches a strange, sort of stony fish that suddenly begins to talk to her. Thus a modern fable unfolds. The book is simply beautiful and illustrated wonderfully by Lea Letén. BENT HALLER (b. 1946) has won a range of prizes; amongst others the 1978 Ministry of Culture’s C & YA Author Award and the Nordic school librarians’ award in 2000. BENT HALLER GICAL TELLER PHOTO: JENS KR. She approached the strange fish again and sat on her hunkers. Still a careful distance from it. She could see that its wriggly nose was moving just like its mouth. ”Are you going to throw me back into the sea?” ”What?” ”I said: Are you going to throw me back into the sea?” ”Is it you that’s talking!?” Magnolia asked, as she inched a few steps further forward then hunkered down again. ”Yes it’s me talking and you’re certainly doing the same, so snap!” the sculpin said. A FEELING ”Authors whose texts are illustrated by Dorte Karrebæk should thank their God and Maker; and of course Madam Karrebæk herself, as she dubs herself on this occasion. Amen!” INFORMATION 28 DORTE KARREBÆK Children should not simply be fobbed off when it comes to portrayals of the complex world in which we live, says author and illustrator Dorte Karrebæk. Her drawings and illustrations engage the reader just as much as her prose. And she’s not afraid of pushing at the boundaries of drawing for children. In truth, she can never stop. 2016 is Dorte Karrebæk 70 th year and she has spent all her life drawing. As a dyslexic, she has often used drawings as her own way of expressing feelings, moods and atmospheres. However, she doesn’t just illustrate books for others; she also writes and illustrates her own books. In the last 13 years, she has also published books with her husband Ole Dalgaard, a.k.a. Oscar K. This artist pair has aroused controversy on several occasions was all alone and had no one to play with. He was bored and afraid and shouted for help. Suddenly light came and he began creating the whole shebang – everything from dandelions to big sisters, and Christmas. In the first part of the book, scary and dark feelings of loneliness and fear are evocatively illustrated. But just at the moment when it’s all too much, light comes (a dazzling eggshell yellow) and good things start to happen. DORTE KARREBÆK (b. 1946) studied at Copenhagen’s School of Design 1964 - 68. She’s been illustrating children’s books since the 80s. Dorte made her children’s book prose debut in 1982 and has When God was a boy, there were no grumpy adults, and no one who said, ”Don’t!” When God was a boy, there was no school and you could just do what you wanted. No homework. No mealtimes. No cross words. You could get up any time you liked in the morning, but there was no morning! God could stay in bed as long as he wanted. But he didn’t want to. So God got up. Extract from Da Gud var dreng (When God was a boy) within the children’s literature scene by touching on taboos and stretching the boundaries of expression in the genre. Dorte Karrebæk illustrated author Sankt Nielsen’s (a.k.a. Claus BeckNielsen) book Da Gud var dreng (When God was a boy). Children often ask their parents what was there before God created the world. This book gives an answer. It can be seen as a kind of prequel to the Genesis or Creation legend. Q: What was there before God created light? Night and day? A: There was nothing, except darkness, and God since won a wide range of awards, including the Ministry of Culture illustrator award and its author award for C & YA books. She has also been nominated for the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award several times, as well as the 2013 Nordic Council C & YA literature award. Most recently she was awarded the 2015 Danish Academy “Silas Award” along with Oscar K. Da Gud var dreng (When God was a boy) Høst & Søn 2015, 64 pages.
