Principal’s Note Dear Blue Darters, Congratulations to the Apopka High School Winter Guard. They performed in the Florida Federation of Colorguards Circuit Premier Competition where they won first place and were named the State Champions and are now ranked 3rd Nationally! The AHS Drama Department presented an extraordinary assortment of short plays by Thornton Wilder. The performances were up close and personal, and quite a treat to watch. Spring Sports are up and running and I suggest that you take advantage of this beautiful spring weather we are enjoying and come out to cheer on our Darters. Moriah Camenker Career Academy Day On Wednesday, March 16, 2011, the 1st Annual Career Academy Day was held at Apopka High School. Over 100 speakers shared their career experiences with the Blue Dar ter student population. Thanks go out to all those guest speakers who made this day truly enlightening and special for our students. We are looking forward to making next year’s Career Academy Day even bigger and better! Ford Drive One for Your School Get ready Blue Darters. Ford is coming to Apopka High School on April 6th, and they are offering to give Apopka High School cash for every adult who test drives a vehicle and fills out a survey. This event is a school-wide fundraiser open to all clubs and organizations at Apopka High School. Each qualified test drive will mean $10 for the organization of your choice, and $10 for the school’s general funds—that’s $20 for every test drive, up to a maximum of $6000 (300 test drives). Mullinax Ford of Apopka has offered to extend the maximum, and pick up the extra cost locally for up to 400 test drives—$8000! This event will be held in the faculty parking lot in front of the 1600 building on Wednesday, April 6th from 12:30 pm till 6:30 pm. Questions? We will be giving juniors and sophomore class presentations the weeks prior to their scheduled appointments. This year students will be creating their schedules for next year online. They will pick the period that they want their classes and they will pick their teachers. Seniors will register first during the week of March 21 by appointment in the Media Center. The appointments are determined by class rank (students weighted GPA). Juniors will register the week of April 4th and Sophomores will register the week of April 18th. In this photo, they are working on programming the robot to traverse a course of 10 meters that contains an “S” shaped section. Senior Dalton Dix, pictured here in his Drafting III class taught by Mr. James Cucinella, is putting the finishing touches on a house he created for the NAWIC contest. The NAWIC contest involves students competing to create the best house for a family with a physically challenged child. The theme was “Empathy--walking in another’s shoes.” The Blue Dar ters nearly had a Darter Sweep, with the top seven winners coming from our school. We also took first place in the art category. On February 5th, over 50 Apopka High School vocal students participated in the District 8 Solo and Ensemble Festival at Colonial High School. Out of 13 entries, Apopka High School received 7 Superiors, 5 Excellents, and 1 Good. The top winners were: Apopka High School (First Place), Wolf Lake Middle School (Second Place) and Zellwood Elementary School (Third Place). Special thanks go out to all the students, parents, and teachers that par ticipated, per formed, attended, and helped out to make this event a great success. Apopka High School Winterguard The Apopka HS Winterguard took first place in Scholastic A Class this past Saturday at the Florida Federation of Colorguards Circuit Premier Competition, hosted here at AHS. They had an amazing show and beat out guards that were ranked in the top 10 in the world last year! This was by far their best performance in Apopka history! While we’re waiting for scores to come in from around the country, so far we’ve only found three other teams scoring higher and we’re excited to know that we are definitely nationally competitive this year! We also had a ton of students, parents, alumni and staff who came out to help make the event successful. Additionally, the Guard Buddies team performed in exhibition to a standing ovation. Media Assistant I and II: Exploratory Teaching. Students receive one elective c r e d i t. M e d i a A s s i s t a n t s help keep the Media Center organized by checking out a nd s helving books. They beautify the Media Center by creating displays and signage and keep the library sparkling. Media Assistants aid other students a nd teac her s i n locating books they would like and help them choose other print and electronic resources. Students who select this class will learn valuable computer, librar y and research skills in addition to polishing their communication skills. • Prerequisites: Media Assistant I: Media Specialist approval, 2.5 GPA, 11th or 12th grade. • Media Assistant II: Successful completion of Media Assistant I, Media Specialist approval, 2.5 GPA, 12th grade. 6 Beef o brady’s student athletes of the week Beef O Brady’s has teamed up with Apopka High School to recognize our outstanding student athletes on a weekly basis throughout the school year. Each Beef O Brady’s Student Athlete receives a $25 gift certificate to Beef O Brady’s. Thank You Beef O Brady’s! Majorie Anderson, Junior Majorie is a second year starter on the Varsity Girl’s Weightlifting team. Majorie recently competed in the state sub sectional competition and placed 5th in her weight class. On the academic side, Majorie maintains a 3.67 weighted GPA while taking three Honors courses and one AP course. Coach Jennifer Korkes had this to say about her student athlete: “She is an excellent example of sportsmanship for not only our team but all other teams she lifts against!” Coach Korkes added this about Majorie’s performance in her Algebra II Honors class, “In mathematics, Majorie is a dedicated student. Majorie is always quick to volunteer to help her peers with questions and is a pleasure to have in the classroom. Her leadership is evident in every interaction she has.” Ms Heather Springer, Majorie’s English III Honor’s teacher, also commented, “Majorie is always willing to participate in classroom discussions, and she always has insightful comments to add!” Majorie’s AVID III instructor, Dr. Nancy Kendall, also remarked, “Majorie is a wonderful AVID student who represents our program well. She is a good student, friendly, caring, and cooperative. We are proud of her!” Porsha Wood, Senior Porsha is a member of the Apopka High School Special Olympics basketball team. On Saturday, Januar y 8, Porsha’s team, the Apopka Eagles, won the Special Olympics Central Florida Basketball Championship. Porsha’s play was so tremendous that during the 4th quarter she carried the team defensively to fend off the Rockets 22-21. Porsha is in her 1st year in the Apopka High School Special Olympics. Porsha participates in the softball, basketball and track and field programs. Porsha’s CBVE (Career-Based Vocational Education) teacher, Mr. David Catron, had this to say about Porsha: “She is very hard working, polite, conscientious, and the people at Florida Hospital, where she does CBVE, just think she is one of the best high school volunteers ever.” Marla Hernandez, Sophomore Marla Hernandez is a member of the 19-0-2 Lady Blue Darter varsity soccer team. Marla maintains a 3.6 Weighted GPA while taking four honors courses. Mr. Doug Matthews, Coach of the Lady Blue Darters, had this to say about his student athlete: “Marla is a two year starter and works real hard in practice and usually ends up playing the whole game with the assignment of marking the opposing team’s outside scoring threat.” Mr. Dale Hyde, Marla’s Geometry Honors instructor, commented, “Marla always has a good attitude towards learning and participating in class.” Mr. Matt Houvouras, Marla’s Painting I teacher, added, “Marla is bright, motivated, and a great student to have in class. Having watched her on the soccer field, she is the same on and off the field; she always gives her best effort and positively affects those around her.” Ms. Cathy Boston, Marla’s English II Honors teacher, also commented, “Marla is an avid reader with a bubbly personality (in addition to being a great athlete)! She consistently exceeds normal AR goals!” Erin Lusaka, Junior Erin is a member of the Apopka High School Competition Cheerleading team. On the academic side, Erin carries an impressive 4.54 Weighted GPA, while taking two AP courses and one Honors course. Erin’s cheerleading coach, Ms Jennifer Neiswanger, had this to say about her student athlete, “Erin is a team player regardless of what sport or club she is involved in. She has a knack for motivating her team mates and keeping them going when they are discouraged or faced with a difficult challenge, especially on our competition cheerleading team.” Erin’s teachers equally sing her praises. Mr. Harold Moss, Erin’s Spanish III instructor, commented, “Erin is an excellent Spanish 3 student. She is constantly asking great questions in class and she loves learning Spanish. She is also one of the happiest people I know. She is almost always in a good mood. It has been a pleasure getting to know Erin this year.” Dr. Nancy Kendall, Erin’s AP English Language instructor, also commented, “Erin is a fantastic student with a super positive attitude. I really enjoy having her in class.” Erin’s Health Science instructor, Ms Mollie Rodriguez-Swain, R.N., added, “Erin is in my health careers class. She has a positive attitude, and a genuine caring and compassionate disposition. I am confident her future patients will enjoy having her provide care for them. She is a delight to have in class!” Erin’s AP US History instructor, Ms Pam Montague, continued the praise, “Erin is a wonderful representative of Apopka High School! She is bright, dedicated, and has a smile that warms the entire room!” Ms Julie Thomas, Erin’s Intermediate Aerobics instructor, also remarked, “Erin is a leader. She’s a super sweet, kind and compassionate student!” 7 Bobby Henderson, Senior Bobby was a member of the Apopka High School Varsity Football and Basketball teams. Bobby recently signed to play for Presbyterian College of South Carolina next year. On the academic side, Bobby maintains a 3.37 Weighted GPA while taking a number of Honors courses. Ms Betty Sasser, Bobby’s English IV Honors instructor, commented, “Bobby is a very nice young man. He is always polite and has a good nature. He is conscientious and does well in his classes. I am glad he is being recognized.” Ms Jennifer Kyle, Bobby’s Integrated Math teacher, added, “He is a joy to teach; he has a real desire to learn. He is an excellent role model to his peers.” Head Football Coach Rick Darlington recently commented about his tight end in the Apopka Chief, “He’s such a great kid, great worker. He did such a great job for us.” Kaitlin Hullinger, Senior Kaitlin plays shortstop for the Lady Blue Darters varsity softball team. Last week, Kaitlin signed a letter of intent to attend Lake Sumter Community College. She is a 4 year varsity athlete, leadoff batter and team captain. On the academic side, Kaitlin maintains an impressive 4.065 Weighted GPA while taking 3 Honors classes and a couple Dual Enrollment courses for which she is earning college credit. Mr. Dylan Cox, Kaitlin’s Ceramics/Pottery III instructor, commented, “Kaitlin’s determination, focus and hard work are second to none. When she begins to work, nothing else exists. She’s a brilliant artist and will totally succeed at whatever she decides to do with her life.” Kaitlin’s Physics I Honors instructor, Ms Karen Musser, also commented, “Kaitlin is a great kid and obviously motivated to create a bright future for herself.” Mr. Paul Peters, Kaitlin’s Student Government instructor, added, “Kaitlin is a wonderful young lady with a great work ethic. She’s all that and a bag of chips.” TJ Renda, Senior T J i s a m e m b e r of t h e u n d efe a te d B l u e Da r te r Varsity Baseball Team. On the academic side, TJ maintains a 3.25 weighted GPA, while taking three Honors courses and one AP course. Head Varsity Baseball Coach, Mr. Charles Schall, had this to say about his standout student athlete, “TJ is one of our team captains. He is an outstanding leader and a very hard worker. We are fortunate to have him.” AP TJ’s Art History instructor, Mr. Matt Houvouras, commented, “I have to say “Yay” for this selection as TJ is a personable and hard-working young man who brings enthusiasm to the class.” Mr. James Cucinella, TJ’s Drafting III instructor, also commented, “Having TJ as a student for his 3rd year in Drafting (AutoCad Applications), I can say he has been an exemplary student. Some of the accomplishments and traits he has demonstrated include taking a lead role in an advance mall design project, producing documents to help with an upgrade to the baseball fields on campus and applying himself to study for his Certified AutoCad Exam in the spring. TJ is good student both in the classroom and on the field.” TJ’s English IV Honors instructor, Mr. Jay Haffner, added, “TJ is a very hard working student-athlete. I’ve known TJ for four years now and I’m incredibly proud of his success. Brittany Eaves, Senior Brittany is a member of the Varsity Girl’s Lacrosse team and an avid member of Student Government. Brittany maintains a 4.04 Weighted GPA while taking five AP courses and two Honors courses. Varsity Lacrosse Head Coach Bill Holman had this to say about his student athlete, “Brittany Eaves is a true team player; she is always there when you need her, on and off the field. She is always unselfish on the field. If you take the time and watch her during a game, she is always moving, and you can just tell she is thinking what to do next. When she is in control of the ball, she never forces it; always looking for that next pass or an opening to the goal. Off the field, she is just as important as she is on the field; she is involved in SGA, Senior class council, Beta and NHS. Brittany does a lot of volunteer work through the clubs that she is involved in. Brittany has been a joy to coach the past 4 years. I cannot think of a better choice for the student of the week.” Brittany’s Student Government Advisor, Mr. Paul Peters, had this to say, “Brittany is a wonderful young woman with winning ways. She possesses a sharp intelligence, maturity, and great work ethic. Her ability to work with anyone and genuine likeability are unquestionable. I truly wish I could clone her!” Brittany’s AP Physics teacher, Ms Karen Musser, added, “Brittany is delightful—hardworking and a great personality.” Brittany’s AP Art History instructor, Mr. Matt Houvouras, also added, “Brittany is hard-working, bright and funny. She is our official timekeeper and is a great leader in our class.” Performance Dance Class Would you like to put a little Jazz in your step? A little pep in your groove? Maybe just a little exercise in your schedule? During registration, consider joining Ms. Jennette’s Performance Dance Class being offered next year during 7th period. • • • • • • This will be a yearlong class. The dance style is jazz, modern jazz with a mix of lyrical and ballet. You will be required to have dance shoes and dance wear. We will choreograph routines that will be performed at different AHS events. We will conduct fund raisers to help with the purchasing of the dance costumes for the performances.
