DESCRIPTION:
During this competency­based lab students will develop, practice and master paramedic skills. Laboratory exercises emphasize patient assessment and recognition of significant findings, pre­hospital diagnosis and differential diagnosis, treatment strategies, trauma assessment and management, management of respiratory emergencies, cardiac emergencies, endocrine and metabolic emergencies, neurological emergencies, gastrointestinal/genitourinary emergencies, toxicological emergencies, and environmental conditions. Additionally, obstetrical and neonatal management, pediatric assessment, pediatric airway management and ventilation, intravenous and intra­osseous therapy, medication administration, Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification are covered. METHODS OF
INSTRUCTION:
A mixture of lecture/discussion, demonstration/return demonstration, role­playing, group work, case studies, multimedia, computer assisted instruction, pre and post conferences, health agency experiences, and community experiences will be used throughout the course.

COURSE
OBJECTIVES:
At the end of this course, the student will be able to:
1. Recognize the nature of a patient’s illness or the mechanism of injury, evaluate its seriousness, and determine the need for care, assistance, and mode of transportation.
2. Give the appropriate emergency treatment necessary to stabilize the patient’s condition.
3. Evaluate the patient’s response to treatment and determine whether further interventions are needed.
4. Use proper lifting techniques to move the patient in order to minimize patient discomfort and injury.
5. Transfer the patient safely to the appropriate medical facility and give an accurate account of patient’s ailment and status to the health professional who is taking over the patient care.
6. Obtain a relevant history of the patient’s illness or injury, perform a pertinent physical examination, and reach an appropriate conclusion regarding the implications of the clinical findings for appropriate treatment on the scene.
7. Manage both trauma and medical patients properly in the pre­hospital setting.
8. Give accurate verbal and written reports, communicate via emergency radio, know the standard operating procedures for emergency vehicle and medical equipment, and the ability to properly control the emergency scene and perform basic extrication.
9. Provide advance life support as necessary.
10. Must demonstrate the ability to comprehend, apply, analyze and evaluate information relevant to their role as entry level Paramedic.
11. Must demonstrate technical proficiency in all skills necessary to fulfill the role of entry level Paramedic.
12. Must demonstrate personal behavior that is consistent with the expectations of professional employers within their prospective field of certification.

 Pass “P” o This grade will be assigned to students who have successfully passed the requirements in this course. This grade is not calculated into GPA, however students enrolled in classes that are evaluated on a Pass/Fail basis must receive a “P” in order to progress in the program.

Fail “F” o This grade will be assigned to students who have not successfully passed the requirements in this course. This grade is not calculated into GPA, however students enrolled in classes that are evaluated on a Pass/Fail basis must receive a “P” in order to progress in the program and therefore students who receive a “F” may not proceed in the program.

Students are expected to attend each clinical to maximize learning. ALL missed clinical time MUST be made up before the end of the term.
Advanced preparation outside the classroom that includes but is not limited to readings, weekly homework assignments and projects will be required for this course. Failure to complete outside preparation will be considered unsatisfactory performance.

Students suspected of academic dishonesty will be immediately referred to the program director, and the board of directors. The action taken by this meeting is absolute and may result in but is not limited to: a warning, academic suspension, dismissal from the program and/or institution, failing grade for the course, and/or failing grade for the assignment.
